🍅 After trying so much hotpot during our China trip, we’ve been missing that feeling of gathering around a bubbling pot and slowly enjoying a meal together. One thing we realised while travelling through China is that hotpot is never just one style. Different regions have their own interpretations — from the bold mala flavours of Sichuan and Chongqing to lighter, more refreshing broths that highlight the natural flavours of the ingredients. For those who can’t take too much spice, tomato hotpot offers a comforting alternative. Its naturally sweet and tangy broth still gives you the full hotpot experience without the intense heat, making it a great choice for families, groups with different spice preferences, or anyone who simply enjoys a gentler soup base. That was what brought us to Xiaoyanzi Tomato Hot Pot 小燕子番茄火锅 in Singapore. Known as one of the pioneers of tomato hotpot in Southeast Asia, the restaurant specialises in a tomato soup base made with fresh Cameron Highlands tomatoes. The broth is slow-cooked until it develops a naturally sweet and tangy flavour, making it rich enough to enjoy throughout the meal without feeling too heavy. We tried a combination of their tomato broth and collagen chicken soup with chestnut. The tomato soup stood out with its refreshing acidity, while the chicken soup had a gentler, naturally sweet flavour that paired well with the ingredients. For the hotpot items, we had their dragonfruit shrimp paste, sea tiger shrimp, mixed vegetables, handmade noodles, taro and sweet potato balls, as well as Spanish chestnut pork collar and pork belly. Everything was freshly prepared, and the best part of hotpot is watching the ingredients slowly cook while the flavours build in the broth. The meal ended with free-flow desserts including ice cream, bingfen, soy beancurd, red bean and grass jelly. A $3 top-up also gives access to the sauce bar, fresh fruits and drinks. At around $30–$40 per person, it’s a satisfying option for a casual gathering. After travelling through China, we realised what makes hotpot memorable isn’t just the soup base or ingredients. It’s the slower pace of eating, the conversations that happen while waiting for food to cook, and everyone sharing from the same pot.
