Dangtu travel guide and discussion

🏞️Caishi Ji Scenic Area 📍Address: No. 1 Tangxian Street, Yushan District, Ma'anshan City 🚇Transportation: Take the high-speed train to Ma'anshan East Station, then a 15-minute taxi ride directly to the site; from downtown, bus routes 4 and 26 go straight to the scenic area entrance. There is affordable parking for self-driving visitors. 🌟Highlights: The foremost of the Yangtze River’s three famous cliffs, the hills are covered with blooming flowers in spring, layered with green trees and seas of blossoms. Climb to the top of Santai Pavilion for a panoramic view of the Yangtze River—super wide and open. Taibai Tower and Sanyuan Cave offer an ancient charm, perfect for capturing classical-style photos. A very comfortable place for spring outings and walks. 🍜Food List: Must-try authentic Dangtu pork noodles, with tender, flavorful meat and a rich broth. Also, the intangible cultural heritage Caishi Ji tea tofu, chewy and full of texture. Outside the scenic area, the old street offers affordable potstickers and local snacks with great value. ⚠️Tips: The scenic area is large; lazy visitors can take the 20 RMB sightseeing bus to save effort. The stairs at Sanyuan Cave are narrow and slippery, so wear non-slip shoes. There are more mosquitoes in spring, so bring insect repellent. It gets windy in the evening, so bring a light jacket when enjoying the river view. On holidays, it’s best to arrive early to avoid crowds. 🌸Cuiluo Bay Flower Sea Area 📍Address: North side inside Caishi Ji Scenic Area 🚇Transportation: Accessible on foot after entering the park; sightseeing buses can reach the stop directly. 🌟Highlights: The core spring flower viewing spot in the scenic area, with large patches of flowers blooming in succession and lush greenery. The riverside water view combined with the flower sea offers a natural and healing atmosphere. Few people and quiet, perfect for photography, walking, and relaxing. 🍜Food List: The park’s convenience snack shop offers freshly ground soy milk and handmade pastries, perfect for a light refreshment when tired, mild and safe choices. ⚠️Tips: Do not step on or pick flowers in the flower sea area, and avoid breaking branches. UV rays are strong on sunny days, so be sure to apply sunscreen for your spring outing. Morning light is best for flower viewing.

March grass grows long, flying peanut trees, good birds sing. If the word "fireworks" is matched with "March", then it will be no longer suitable. Li Bai gave a name to Meng Haoran with the famous words "Fireworks in March under Yangzhou". It seems that Yangzhou will stay in the fireworks forever in March. But not only can you feel the fireworks in March when you go to Yangzhou. As the oldest place of Li Bai - Ma'anshan, it is also a beautiful place to enjoy flowers mid-to-late March, Maeshan Daqingshan will hold a peach blossom festival, the city to Daqingshan have a special bus line It has attracted people from all over the spring to enjoy the spring. I thought that there was only peach blossoms at the Peach Blossom Festival, but after that, I was amazed!

If you want to avoid the crowds this weekend, just grab a high-speed train ticket and head to the surrounding areas. Ma'anshan, Gaoyou, Chuzhou, and Jurong—four small cities with names that sound as relaxing as they are. Each is about an hour away, uncrowded, beautiful, and surprisingly affordable. I won't link them together; I'll cover them one by one so you can just pick one and go. 📍 Ma'anshan Cai Shi Ji is a must-visit. It features sheer cliffs along the Yangtze River; climbing up offers a wide-open view, and the river breeze blows all your worries away. Nearby is the Taibai Pavilion, where you can trace the footsteps of the "Poet Immortal" Li Bai in a quiet setting. Yushan Lake Park in the city center is also worth a stroll—it's where locals hang out, full of authentic local life. Itinerary: Morning at Cai Shi Ji, afternoon at Yushan Lake + Old Street. One day is just right. Food: Dangtu braised pork noodles (the noodles are chewy, the meat is savory), and Cai Shi Ji tea-dried tofu, which makes for a great, addictive snack. Note: Take the high-speed train to Ma'anshan East Station. It's about a 20-minute taxi ride from the station to Cai Shi Ji. Wear comfortable shoes, as there are quite a few stairs. 📍 Gaoyou I went because of Wang Zengqi, but I ended up falling in love with the city itself. Gaoyou Lake is boundless, and watching the sunset in the evening feels like being in a manga. Nanmen Street still retains its old-world charm, with bluestone roads and old shops selling salted duck eggs and "pubao" meat (meat wrapped in reed leaves). The Zhenguo Temple Pagoda sits on a small island in the lake; cross the bridge to enter, and you'll hear the wind chimes, which is incredibly soothing. Itinerary: Morning at Wenyoutai, afternoon at Gaoyou Lake + Zhenguo Temple, and spend the evening eating and strolling along Nanmen Street. Food: Gaoyou salted duck eggs go without saying—the yolks are oily and rich. The "pubao" meat is a specialty, like a firm meatball with a subtle, fresh fragrance. The Yangchun noodles are also delicious; remember to add a fried egg. Note: Take the high-speed train to Gaoyou Station. Taxis between attractions are not far. If you want to climb the pagoda at Zhenguo Temple, make sure to arrive before 4:00 PM. 📍 Chuzhou Langya Mountain is truly underrated. The mountain isn't high, but it's lush and green. Walking along the stream, the sound of bubbling water reminds you of the "Old Drunkard's Pavilion" essay. The pavilion itself isn't large, but the surrounding area is steeped in culture. After coming down the mountain, head to Zunyang Street, where old brick houses have been converted into small shops—great for photos. Explore the old town in the evening for a vibrant, bustling atmosphere. Itinerary: One day at Langya Mountain. Enter the mountain in the morning, have a vegetarian meal inside at noon, and explore Zunyang Street in the afternoon. Food: Chuzhou whole duck, Guanba beef, and Chuju tea, which is great for cooling down. Small wontons with sesame flatbread make for an incredible afternoon tea. Note: Take the high-speed train to Chuzhou Station. You need to book tickets for Langya Mountain in advance. There are many mosquitoes in the mountains, so bring repellent. 📍 Jurong Maoshan Mountain is famous, but the city center of Jurong is actually more comfortable. The Jiuxiao Wanfu Palace is at the peak, looking ethereal when surrounded by clouds and mist. After descending, visit the Chongxi Palace—a Taoist temple garden with red walls and green trees that looks great in photos. If you are traveling with elderly people or children, choose the Wawushan gentle slope trail; it's easy and quiet. There is also Qianhua Ancient Village, a complex of imitation Ming and Qing dynasty architecture; when the lights come on at night, it feels like traveling back in time. Itinerary: A full day at Maoshan. Morning at Jiuxiao Wanfu Palace, afternoon at Chongxi Palace and surroundings, and evening at Qianhua Ancient Village. Food: Maoshan old goose, Gecun clay pot, and Jintan Queshe tea. The chestnut braised chicken in local farmhouse restaurants is very fragrant and goes perfectly with rice—you'll want two bowls. Note: Take the high-speed train to Jurong West Station. There is a special tourist line to Maoshan. The weather in the mountains is changeable, so bring a light jacket. These four cities have no crushing crowds and require no complex planning. Buy a ticket and just go. Which one would you most like to add to your weekend list?

Want to "lie flat" in Sept–Oct? These 5️⃣ off-the-beaten-path cities are uncrowded and budget-friendly 01 Guangzhou | Guangdong To be clear, Guangzhou isn't exactly "off-the-beaten-path," but in Sept–Oct, the brutal summer heat has passed, and the evening river breeze makes it breathable. If you want to "lie flat," don't be greedy; just plan one main area per day. 📍 No need to buy a ticket to go to the top of Canton Tower. Just head to the riverside promenade at 6:00 PM to watch the tower light up. Use the money you saved for a late-night snack. Chen Clan Ancestral Hall is best visited in the morning; it's less crowded and the lighting is good. The brick and wood carvings are worth a slow look. After exploring, turn into the old alleys of Liwan. 🍜 A bowl of wonton noodles plus a plate of rice noodle rolls is more authentic than restaurant food in tourist areas. Don't force yourself to hike to Moxing Ridge at Baiyun Mountain. Take the cable car from the South Gate, walk a short distance, and you'll reach the viewing platform—it's easy for seniors and children. 🚄 Subway plus taxi is the most stress-free way to get around. Avoid taking the bus during morning and evening rush hours. For a comfortable visit to Chimelong, choose a weekday; wait times for popular attractions can be cut in half. ⚠️ Prices are the same on weekends and holidays, but the crowds are overwhelming. Families with kids should consider splitting the visit over two days. 02 Pingdingshan | Henan Pingdingshan is underrated. In Sept–Oct, Yaoshan starts to show autumn colors. The red leaves aren't at their peak yet, but it's uncrowded and the temperature is comfortable. You can do Yaoshan and the Central Plains Buddha on the same day. Go up Yaoshan in the morning and take the cable car to save your legs. It's windy at the summit, so remember to bring a jacket. ⏰ Get up the mountain before 10:00 AM while the mist is still there—it's perfect for photos. Go to the Central Plains Buddha in the afternoon. There are many steps, so if you have bad knees, just take the sightseeing shuttle. 📍 Don't buy incense at the scenic area; prices are doubled compared to the bottom of the mountain. 🍜 After coming down, find a local eatery for a bowl of hot and sour soup with a sesame flatbread—it's half the price of the restaurants on the mountain. ⚠️ Dining options on the mountain are limited and expensive, so it's safer to bring your own snacks. This route is perfect for those who want to avoid crowded mountains. Driving yourself is most convenient; public transport transfers will waste half a day. 03 Ma'anshan | Anhui Ma'anshan is very close to Nanjing—a 20-minute high-speed train ride—but the tourist volume is on a completely different level. A top choice for "lying flat." The Yangtze River Caishiji Cultural and Ecological Tourism Area is the core. Walk along the riverside boardwalk, stop and go, and watch the cargo ships pass by slowly; the pace will naturally slow down. ⏰ The light is soft after 4:00 PM, and the river surface glitters with gold. 📍 Enter from the East Gate, walk along the river to Taibai Pavilion, and then loop back without retracing your steps. The boardwalk is flat and stroller-friendly. 🍜 After leaving the scenic area, find a Dangtu braised pork noodle shop. The noodles are chewy, and the portion of meat is generous. ⚠️ The kiosks inside the scenic area are a bit pricey, so buy water beforehand. Suitable for couples or solo travelers looking to clear their heads. 🚄 Take the high-speed train to Ma'anshan East Station, then it's about a 20-minute taxi ride—less hassle than parking if you drive. 04 Haibei | Qinghai Sept–Oct is the most comfortable time of the year in Haibei. The summer crowds have receded, the grasslands are turning yellow, and the snow line on the Qilian Mountains is descending, creating richer color layers. Any road at the foot of the Qilian Mountains looks great. ⏰ Go once in the early morning and once at dusk; the light is completely different. The Heihe Grand Canyon is best visited in the afternoon. It's windy in the canyon, so wear a windbreaker. Lenglongling and Amidongsuo are suitable for hiking enthusiasts. 📍 You must take the shuttle bus inside the Amidongsuo scenic area. The hiking section is at a high altitude, so know your limits. ⚠️ The temperature difference between day and night can reach 15 degrees, so don't worry about the weight of a down jacket. 🍜 The hand-grabbed mutton and yak yogurt in Qilian County are worth trying. Book accommodation in advance; many guesthouses start closing after October. Driving is the best option; public transport is infrequent. Perfect for people who want to quietly enjoy the scenery without rushing. 05 Jingmen | Hubei Jingmen doesn't have a high profile, but the Xianling Mausoleum is worth a special trip. In Sept–Oct, the osmanthus flowers in the park are in bloom, and it smells sweet when you walk in. The Xianling Mausoleum Cultural Area is large but has few tourists, so you can take your time exploring. ⏰ Go in the morning when the light hits the red walls best. 📍 Take the sightseeing shuttle from the visitor center to the core area to save yourself two kilometers of unnecessary walking. ⚠️ There's not much shade in the park, so bring a hat and sunglasses on sunny days. 🍜 Back in the city, find an Aizi pie shop, eat them while hot, and pair them with a bowl of rice tea to cut the greasiness. Suitable for those interested in ancient architecture and a quiet atmosphere. 🚄 Take the high-speed train to Jingmen Station, then it's about a 30-minute taxi ride. Buses are available but infrequent. 06 Yangzhou | Jiangsu Sept–Oct is the golden period for Yangzhou, but tourists are concentrated on weekends. If you want to "lie flat," choose a weekday, and the whole city is yours. For Slender West Lake, I recommend entering at 7:00 AM. The morning mist hasn't cleared, and Wuting Bridge looks like it's floating on the water. ⏰ After 8:00 AM, tour groups start arriving, and the experience drops off a cliff. Just choose one between Ge Garden and He Garden. The Four Seasons Rockery in Ge Garden is more exquisite, while the covered corridors in He Garden are better for photos. 📍 The two gardens are not far apart—a 15-minute walk. 🍜 Don't queue at the "internet-famous" restaurants for morning tea. Find one crowded with locals and order a round of dried tofu shreds, soup dumplings, and jade siu mai. ⚠️ The "Three Springs" restaurants are famous but expensive; it depends on your budget. Suitable for those who like a slow pace and morning tea. The city is small, and you can basically get anywhere for the base taxi fare. 07 Qiqihar | Heilongjiang In Sept–Oct, the Zhalong Ecological Tourism Area in Qiqihar enters its most comfortable season. The reeds turn golden, the red-crowned cranes start to gather, and the wind carries the scent of grass. To see the cranes at Zhalong, you have to catch the release time. ⏰ There's one show at 10:00 AM and another at 2:00 PM. Arrive at the crane viewing platform half an hour early to grab a spot. 📍 It's about a 40-minute drive from the city; chartering a car is easier than waiting for the bus. ⚠️ There are many mosquitoes in the wetlands, so wear long sleeves, long pants, and use mosquito repellent. 🍜 Back in the city, you must have Qiqihar barbecue—marinated meat with onions, grilled over charcoal. It's more satisfying than any Michelin-starred meal. Suitable for families with kids and photography enthusiasts. 🚄 Take the high-speed train to Qiqihar South Station, then it's about a 20-minute taxi ride into the city. 08 Jingdezhen | Jiangxi Sept–Oct in Jingdezhen is neither cold nor hot, perfect for slowly wandering around the Taoxichuan Ceramic Art Avenue. There are markets on Friday and Saturday nights with twice as many stalls as usual. Taoxichuan is best visited in the evening. ⏰ After 5:00 PM, the lights come on; the old factory buildings with warm lighting look great in every photo. 📍 Don't bargain too hard at the market; many are student works, and the prices are already fair. The Jingdezhen Ancient Kiln Folk Customs Museum is best visited in the morning to watch master craftsmen throwing clay and painting porcelain. ⚠️ Experience activities cost extra, so ask clearly before you start. 🍜 The cold noodles and fried dough sticks wrapped with mochi at Fuzhou Alley will fill you up for just a few yuan. Suitable for those interested in handmade crafts and markets. 🚄 Take the high-speed train to Jingdezhen North Station, then it's about a 15-minute taxi ride to Taoxichuan. Out of these cities, choose Haibei if you want to completely clear your head, Yangzhou if you want to eat well, and Jingdezhen if you want to explore while having fun. Which one do you want to visit most?

Listen to me, ladies 🥹 Take the high-speed train from Nanjing South to Ma'anshan; it takes as little as 16 or 17 minutes. "Before your seat even gets warm, it's time to get off." This riverside town, favored by the poet Li Bai, is truly perfect for a weekend getaway 🍃 🌟 Trip Highlights Cai Shi Ji (Caishiji) is a must-visit, ranking first 🏔️ It's one of the three famous cliffs along the Yangtze River, where Li Bai wrote, "The Heavenly Gate is broken, the Chu River opens." Standing at Santai Pavilion overlooking the Yangtze, the river surface is covered in golden light at dusk—it's perfect for photos. Walking along the cliffside boardwalk, with the river on one side and the mountain on the other, the wind is strong but incredibly refreshing. Li Bai Cultural Park is in Dangtu, where the poet's actual tomb is located. The park is very quiet, filled with bamboo, and the tombstone is inscribed with "Tomb of the Tang Dynasty Sage Li Taibai." It's much less crowded than Caishiji, making it perfect for a leisurely stroll. Yushan Lake Park is free and located in the city center. It's where locals go for evening walks and runs. The Nine-Arch Bridge and the lake island are very photogenic. 🗺️ How to spend 2 days and 1 night Day 1: Morning high-speed train to Ma'anshan East Station → Taxi to Caishiji (explore for about 3.5 hours) → Afternoon, buy dried tofu in Caishi Ancient Town → Evening, walk around Yushan Lake → Night, grab skewers at the Shizhuan 1958 Night Market. Day 2: Morning, have "big meat noodles" in Dangtu → Li Bai Cultural Park → Afternoon, return trip. Don't rush; it's more comfortable to take it slow. 🍜 What to eat Dangtu big meat noodles are the gold standard for breakfast 🍜 Thick-cut pork belly with hand-pulled noodles, costing 10–15 yuan a bowl, with rich broth and tender meat. Buy loose-packed dried tofu at Caishiji as a snack; the more you chew, the more fragrant it gets. Hanshan old goose soup has a golden broth that will instantly revive you. For the night market, I recommend Shizhuan 1958 for fried rice and small meat skewers—it's full of local vibes. 🚄 Transportation Nanjing South to Ma'anshan East takes about 17 minutes by high-speed train. Taxis within the city have cheap starting fares, and public buses are also convenient. After the Ningma line opens in April 2026, the full trip from Xishanqiao to Taibai Station will cost 9 yuan, and both Jinling Tong and Ma'anshan citizen cards will be accepted. ⚠️ Tips Caishiji admission is 68 yuan on weekdays, or about 55 yuan if booked online in advance. Sometimes it's free during the summer, so check official announcements before you go. There are many stairs in the scenic area, so wear non-slip sneakers. It's windy by the river, so bring a light jacket even in summer. Don't trust scalpers at the entrance; official channels are the most reliable. In short, Ma'anshan is a place where you don't need to do much planning—you can just slow down as soon as you arrive 🌿 It's worth it to take 17 minutes to switch cities and catch your breath.

After buying your ticket at the entrance on Tangxian Street, walk down the stone steps toward the river. Within a few steps, the river breeze hits you. Turning past a low wall, the three-story eaves of Taibai Pavilion peek out from behind the trees. Below lies the Yangtze River, so wide you can't see the other side. Located at 1 Tangxian Street, Yushan District, Ma'anshan City, Caishiji is one of the Three Jiji of the Yangtze, alongside Chenglingji in Hunan and Yanziji in Nanjing, and is a 5A scenic area. It leans against Cuiluo Mountain, with a massive cliff jutting into the river, where the waves crash with a muffled sound. Adult admission is around 60 yuan, slightly cheaper if booked online than at the window; students and visitors aged 60–64 get half-price tickets, while those over 65 or under 6 are free. The park opens at 8:30 AM and closes at 5:30 PM, with last entry at 4:00 PM (earlier in winter). Sightseeing shuttles cost 20 yuan one-way or 30 yuan round-trip; they're a good option if you're with seniors or children. If you're up for it, the park isn't huge, and walking is a better way to explore. Taibai Pavilion is the star of the park. Standing by the river with its upturned eaves, it was built to commemorate Li Bai. To climb it, you must ascend a narrow wooden staircase with handrails polished smooth by countless hands. Standing on the second floor looking out the window, the river seems to sway right beneath your feet. Li Bai visited the Dangtu area many times throughout his life and lived in Caishiji in his later years. The line "Tianmen Mountain is split by the Chu River" refers to this very stretch of the river. The pavilion displays poems and rubbings from various dynasties, and next door is the Li Bai Memorial Hall, which houses his poetry collections and related calligraphy and paintings. Walking from Taibai Pavilion toward the river, you'll find Zhexian Garden, a small Jiangnan-style garden with stone bridges, ponds, and corridors—a perfect place to rest. Right next to it is Guangji Temple, with halls built up the hillside. It's not very crowded, and the ancient ginkgo tree in front of the hall was covered in fallen leaves. Continue along the cliffside boardwalk, and the rolling Yangtze River will be right beneath your feet. The boardwalk is built against the cliff, with the river just beyond the railing. It may close temporarily during high tides or heavy rain, so check the sign at the entrance before you go. The boardwalk is narrow, so you'll need to turn sideways to let people pass. At the end is Sanyuan Cave, a natural cave facing the river. It houses statues of deities, and you can see boats on the river from the entrance. Legend has it that three scholars studied here in the past and all passed the imperial examinations, which is how the cave got its name. A bit further up is Ranxi Pavilion, named after the ancient allusion of "lighting a rhinoceros horn to illuminate the water." The hike up Cuiluo Mountain isn't long; it takes about half an hour to reach the top at a leisurely pace. Santai Pavilion at the summit was recently closed for renovations, and the cable car is also out of service, so there are fewer people at the top. Standing on the platform, you can take in both the Yangtze River and the distant Tianmen Mountain. On the way down, detour to Li Bai's cenotaph, reached by a short flight of stone steps surrounded by bamboo. Nearby is the Lin Sanzhi Art Museum; this contemporary calligrapher was from He County, Anhui, and the museum houses his ink works. This loop takes about 3–4 hours and is a relaxing pace. The rocks of Caishiji have seen more than just poetry. In the 31st year of the Shaoxing reign of the Southern Song Dynasty, Yu Yunwen commanded his troops here and blocked the southward-advancing Jin army on the river; the Battle of Caishi was thus written into history. Standing by the river today, the cliff remains the same, but the river is much quieter than it was back then. Not far east of the scenic area is Wanzhuwu, a bamboo grove that's cool to walk through in summer. If you have an extra half-day, take a taxi to Li Bai's tomb in Qingshan, Dangtu. It is said that the Poet Immortal is buried there, while the site at Caishiji is just a cenotaph. To get to Caishiji, take the high-speed train to Ma'anshan East Station, then it's a 15-minute taxi ride. Driving from Nanjing takes about an hour, and there is a parking lot at the North Gate of the scenic area. You can also take city buses 4, 26, or You 1. For food, Tangxian Street outside the scenic area is the place to go. Caishi dried tofu is a local specialty—salty, fragrant, and chewy—and makes a great souvenir. Try the fresh river fish and steamed rice with pork. For accommodation, chain hotels in downtown Ma'anshan for 100–200 yuan are sufficient, or you can stay nearby in Dangtu. It was getting dark as I left the park, and a few boat lights flickered on the river. Standing on the steps, I wanted to recite a couple of Li Bai's poems facing this stretch of the river, but after racking my brain, I could only remember "Tianmen Mountain is split by the Chu River"—the rest had long been returned to my Chinese teacher. In the place where the Poet Immortal once lived, my limited literary knowledge was clearly not enough.

Take the kids for a 3-day trip, these 8 spots are so stress-free 01 Nanjing | Jiangsu Nanjing is the kind of city where you can bring your kids for 3 days and find something new to do every day. Head straight to the Presidential Palace on the first day; it has plenty of trees and flat paths, making it easy to push a stroller, and you can tell the kids a bit about the history of the Republic of China era. ⏰ Arrive before 9:00 AM to avoid crowds and heat. After 11:00 AM, tour groups pile up and it's hard to move. In the afternoon, go to the Confucius Temple—Qinhuai Scenic Area, but don't just stick to the main street. 📍 Turn from Pingjiangfu Road into the small alleys to avoid the crowds and see locals walking their birds. 🍜 Get a small bowl of duck blood vermicelli soup and add an order of potstickers; the kids will be full. At night, take a painted boat to see the lights. The kids will be excited enough to scream, but book the boat tickets a day in advance; waiting in line on-site takes at least 40 minutes. Niushoushan is good for the second morning. The underground palace is stunning, but there are many stairs, so it's not very stroller-friendly. ⚠️ For younger kids, I recommend taking the scenic shuttle bus directly up the mountain to save energy for exploring the Buddha Palace. Save Xuanwu Lake for the third day. Rent a pedal boat; the kids can pedal themselves and play all afternoon. The lake breeze after 4:00 PM is very comfortable; just bring a picnic mat and relax. 02 Shiyan | Hubei The highlight of Shiyan is Wudang Mountain. When bringing kids, don't try to climb all the temples in one day—that's just making it hard on yourself. ⏰ Enter the mountain gate at 7:30 AM, take the scenic shuttle to Qiongtai, then transfer to the cable car to the Golden Summit. The whole trip takes over 2 hours, which is manageable for kids. The stairs at the Golden Summit are steep, so hold hands with younger children. 📍 The square in front of Zixiao Palace is the best place to rest; it has plenty of shade and stone steps to sit on. 🍜 The vegetarian meals on the mountain open at 11:00 AM. If you go too late, only greens are left, but they taste better than expected—the kids actually ate 2 bowls. If the children are elementary school age or older, you can take the Nanyan Palace route to see the "Dragon Head Incense" and tell them some stories about ancient architecture. ⚠️ The weather on the mountain changes quickly; raincoats are more useful than umbrellas. Choose a homestay at the foot of the mountain for accommodation; it's half the price of staying on the mountain and you can take a hot shower. 03 Ma'anshan | Anhui Ma'anshan is an easily overlooked small city for family trips, but Caishiji is truly worth a half-day visit. 📍 Enter from the East Gate and walk along the riverside boardwalk. You can watch cargo ships slowly pass by, and the kids will stare at them for a long time. ⏰ It's best to go after 4:30 PM. The river surface turns golden in the sunset, so you don't need filters for photos. ⚠️ Some parts of the boardwalk don't have railings, so hold young children's hands tightly. There is a Taibai Pavilion in the scenic area where you can talk about Li Bai, but don't expect the kids to remember much—it's enough if they remember "Li Bai drank wine here." 🍜 After leaving the scenic area, go to the old city to eat Dangtu meat noodles. The noodles are a bit firm, so you can ask the owner to cook them a little longer. If it rains, go to the City Museum instead. It's free and has dinosaur skeletons, which will keep the kids quiet for half an hour. One day is enough for this; save the rest of the time for Nanjing or Wuhu. 04 Shanghai For a 3-day trip to Shanghai with kids, Disney will definitely take up 1 day. ⏰ Arrive at the gate at 7:00 AM to line up, and head straight to Soaring Over the Horizon when the park opens at 8:30 AM to save 2 hours. ⚠️ Don't bring a stroller that is too wide; some passages in the park are too narrow. Go to the Expo Park and Yu Garden on the second day; you can combine them into one route. 📍 The China Art Museum in the Expo Park is free and cool inside, perfect for hiding from the sun at noon. Go to Yu Garden in the afternoon. Don't squeeze onto the Zigzag Bridge; turn to the old street nearby. 🍜 For Nanxiang steamed buns, choose the second-floor dine-in area; it's less crowded than the takeout window on the first floor. The Guangfulin Relics Park is good for the third morning. The underwater museum is very special, and the kids will ask "Why is the house in the water?" If you still have energy in the afternoon, stroll around Disneytown; you can enter without a ticket. Choose accommodation along the subway line; don't be cheap and stay too far away—transferring with kids is too much of a hassle. 05 Xilingol | Inner Mongolia Wulagai Grassland is the kind of place where you want to run as soon as you get out of the car. ⏰ The grass is greenest from July to August; it's windy in other months, and the kids won't be able to keep their eyes open. 📍 Start from Bayinhushuo Town and charter a car to go deep into the grassland; it's 10 times better than the entrance of the scenic area. You can let the kids experience milking cows and feeding lambs, but ⚠️ don't let the kids get close to large livestock alone; the herdsmen will remind you. 🍜 Choose the lamb chop part for the hand-grabbed mutton; it's tender and easy for kids to chew. The milk tea is salty, so you might not be used to it the first time, but it's delicious with fried rice. Stay in a yurt at night—the kind with a private bathroom. Don't choose the purely primitive ones; it's not convenient with kids. The temperature difference between day and night on the grassland is large, so bring a thin down jacket. Arrange 1 day for the grassland, 1 day for Wulagai Lake, and 1 day for resting in town; the pace is just right. 06 Haixi | Qinghai This route in Haixi has a high altitude, so take it slow with kids. On the first day, arrive at Chaka Salt Lake. ⏰ The lake surface looks like a mirror before 10:00 AM; after that, it gets windy and blurry. ⚠️ Rent shoe covers to go into the water; don't let the kids step on it barefoot, as the salt grains will hurt their feet. Go to Qarhan Salt Lake and Emerald Lake on the second day. The 2 lakes have different colors; Emerald Lake is greener, and the kids will say it looks like jelly. 📍 It's less crowded deep in Emerald Lake, but the road is difficult to walk on, so don't bring a stroller. You can just look at the Kunlun Mountains from a distance; no need to climb them specifically. The altitude is too high, and kids will easily get out of breath. 🍜 There are few places to eat on the road, so prepare bread and hot water. Choose accommodation in Golmud; the conditions are better than by the lake. If the kids show signs of altitude sickness, retreat immediately; don't push it. Arrange 2 lakes and 1 rest day for the 3 days; don't be too greedy. 07 Taizhou | Zhejiang Taizhou is suitable for a slow trip with kids. On the first day, go to Tiantai Mountain. ⏰ Walk to Shiliang Waterfall in the morning; there aren't many stairs, and the kids can walk on their own. 📍 You can play in the water in the pool below the waterfall; bring a pair of sandals. ⚠️ The stones are slippery, so don't let the kids run. Go to Taizhou Prefecture City on the second day. You can walk a section of the city wall; kids like this feeling of "climbing high." 🍜 Eat the seaweed cakes on Ziyang Street while they are hot; they get hard when cold. Go to Shenxianju in the afternoon. The cable car line is long, so I suggest going up the mountain after 3:00 PM; it's less crowded and the light is softer. If it rains, go to the Linhai Museum instead. It's free and has interactive screens. Choose accommodation in the old city of Linhai; you can still stroll around Ziyang Street at night. 3 days and 2 nights is just right; don't rush. 08 Chengde | Hebei When visiting the Chengde Mountain Resort with kids, don't try to walk the whole thing; just choose the lake area. ⏰ Enter from Lizheng Gate at 8:00 AM and take the mountain tour bus to Ermadao, where you can overlook the Little Potala Palace. ⚠️ The mountain tour bus has a long line, so get a number first before exploring. You can go boating in the lake area. The kids can pedal themselves, and you can go around half the lake in 1 hour. 🍜 Leave the resort and go to Shanzhuang East Road to eat lamb soup with sesame seed cakes; the kids can drink half a bowl. Go to Puning Temple in the afternoon; the Great Buddha is stunning, but you cannot take photos inside the hall. Save Jinshanling Great Wall for the second day. ⏰ The light is best after 4:00 PM, and it's less crowded. Just walk to the Zhuanduokou pass with the kids; don't push yourself to the General Tower. ⚠️ There is no shade on the Great Wall, so hats and water are a must. Arrange 1 day for the resort, 1 day for the Great Wall, and 1 day for resting; it won't be tiring. Of these 8 places, I most recommend Nanjing and Chengde. One lets you play for 3 days within the city, and the other is cool and lets you climb the Great Wall. Which one have you taken your kids to? Let's chat in the comments section.

Some cities are meant to be passed through, while others are meant to be remembered for a lifetime. Here are eight places I urge you to visit as soon as possible, lest you regret it when you're too old to travel. 1️⃣ Liuzhou|Guangxi Liuzhou is more than just snail rice noodles. The stilted houses of Chengyang Eight Villages are hidden in the valleys of the Three Rivers. ⏰ Arrive before 10 am, before the morning mist dissipates; the Drum Tower and Wind and Rain Bridge will look like a traditional Chinese ink painting. In the villages, grandmothers sell oil tea for three yuan a bowl; it's bitter at first, then sweet, and goes perfectly with glutinous rice cakes. Longtan Park is a local's backyard. 📍 Enter from the north gate; a 40-minute walk around the lake reveals karst hills reflected in the water, more captivating than many paid tourist attractions. ⚠️ Avoid going on weekend afternoons; the trails will be completely blocked by families with children. Save the Liujiang River night view for 8 pm. A water bus ride costs only three yuan, from the South Ferry Terminal to the East Embankment Terminal. The river breeze blows into your collar, and the lights on both banks reflect in the water. 🍜 After disembarking, head to the Qingyun Market area for some late-night snacks. The stir-fried snail rice noodles are even more fragrant than the soup version, and the smell of pickled bamboo shoots will linger with you all the way back to your hotel. For families with elderly members, explore the park and riverside. Chengyang Eight Villages has many steps, so those with mobility issues should be cautious. 2️⃣ Changchun|Jilin The Puppet Emperor's Palace Museum isn't a relaxing attraction, but it's worth spending three hours exploring at a leisurely pace. ⏰ Enter as soon as it opens at 9 am to avoid crowds. Audio guides are available for rent at 20 yuan, much better than a rushed visit. ⚠️ Closed on Mondays. Don't ask me how I know. Changchun World Sculpture Park is best visited in the afternoon. The African Pavilion and Art Pavilion are separate; the park is so large that a sightseeing bus is necessary. 📍 Enter from the south gate and first see the main sculpture, then walk around the lake. The evening light shining on the bronze sculpture gives it a very weighty feel. I have reservations about Changying Century City. It's okay with children, but the attractions are geared towards younger kids. Adults buying separate tickets might feel like a waste. Jingyuetan, on the other hand, was surprisingly good. Rent a bicycle and ride halfway around; the forest absorbs all the city noise. 🍜 For lunch, go to Guilin Road for chicken soup and tofu skewers—a local favorite since childhood. Changchun's light rail and subway connect most places; staying near People's Square is the most convenient. 3️⃣ Lhasa|Tibet The beauty of Namtso Lake is almost irrational. ⏰ A four-hour one-way trip from Lhasa. When the altitude reaches 5,000 meters, the lake suddenly comes into view, its blue so stunning it leaves you speechless. ⚠️ Don't run or jump near the lake; altitude sickness will cure any stubbornness. Bring a thick coat; the wind at the mountain pass is strong enough to blow your hat off. The Potala Palace requires advance booking. Tickets are scarce during peak season, and entry is only permitted at the reserved time; late arrivals will be denied entry. 📍 The Chakpori Hill viewing platform is a popular spot for panoramic photos. It's less crowded in the morning; bring a 50-yuan note for your photos. The palace steps are steep, so walk slowly and don't strain your lungs. The Jokhang Temple's pilgrimage route has more character than the temple itself. In the evening, mingle with the crowds and walk around; the smell of butter lamps will linger on your sleeves. 🍜 At the Guangming Gangqiong Sweet Tea House, a cup of sweet tea costs 80 cents. Take your own cup, find a seat, and leave your change on the table; the lady will come to pour it. Lhasa is best enjoyed at a leisurely pace. Don't fill your itinerary too full; leave a day to relax and unwind in Barkhor Street. 4️⃣ Zhaoqing|Guangdong Most of Zhaoqing's essence lies in Xinghu Lake. ⏰ Entering Seven Star Crags at 7 AM, the lake is shrouded in mist, and the rock formations seem to rise from the water. Locals are already practicing Tai Chi by the lake. 📍 Enter from the East Gate, walk along the lake to Longyan Cave, then take a boat to Fairy Lake. The route is convenient and avoids backtracking. Cycling on the Star Lake Greenway is very comfortable; bike rental is 10 yuan per hour. ⚠️ Avoid going at midday in summer, as the stone path reflects heat and can cook eggs. Spring is the best time to visit; in March, the Bauhinia flowers bloom along the embankment, and fallen petals float on the lake. 🍜 After leaving the scenic area, head to Wenming Road to find zongzi (sticky rice dumplings). Mung beans and pork belly are wrapped in winter leaves—one is enough to fill you up. Zhaoqing is small, and public transportation and taxis are cheap, making it suitable for a two-day, one-night weekend trip. Children can take a boat tour on Star Lake, and the elderly can easily walk along the flat greenway. 5️⃣ Hohhot | Inner Mongolia Laoniuwan Yellow River Grand Canyon is located at the border of Shanxi and Inner Mongolia, about a three-hour drive from Hohhot. ⏰ The light is best after 4 PM, when the Yellow River makes a large bend, turning the canyon a golden-red hue. ⚠️ Be aware of strong winds and sandstorms; bring goggles and a mask, and don't change your camera lens unnecessarily. Chilichuan Grassland Cultural Tourism Area is close to the city center and best visited in the evening. The grassland isn't vast, but it's convenient; rent a Mongolian robe for photos—you can bargain down to 50 yuan. 📍 Watch the sunset at Hasuhai Wharf; the water is covered in shimmering gold, even more photogenic than the grassland itself. 🍜 Back in the city, eat shaomai (steamed dumplings); they're sold by weight (eight dumplings per 50 grams), paired with brick tea to cut the greasiness. There are many old restaurants around the North Gate of the Old City; avoid eating near the scenic area entrance. Hohhot is best visited by car or chartered vehicle; public transportation to the grassland and canyon is inconvenient. Summer is perfect for escaping the heat, but winter is too cold, and the grasslands aren't worth seeing. 6️⃣ Ya'an | Sichuan Bifengxia Gorge is Ya'an's signature attraction. ⏰ In the morning, visit the wildlife park. Take a feeding cart into the predator enclosure; lions will be watching you through the windows – your heart will race! ⚠️ Don't stick your hands out the window, and don't carry plastic bags in the monkey enclosure; the monkeys are incredibly fast at snatching things. In the afternoon, hike through the ecological canyon, with waterfalls cascading down your side. 📍 From Nuwa Pool to Qingyun Ladder, the steps are slippery, so wear non-slip shoes. The canyon is about 5-6 degrees Celsius cooler than outside; in summer, it feels like a natural air-conditioned room. 🍜 After leaving the scenic area, eat Ya fish, stewed in a clay pot. The soup is white, and the fish is tender, but it's not cheap, so ask before ordering. Ya'an city isn't large; stay overnight near the covered bridge and enjoy barbecue while feeling the river breeze in the evening. Suitable for families with children; a day trip combining the zoo and the canyon is perfect. Those with mobility issues may find walking through the canyons tiring; it's better to just visit the zoo. 7️⃣ Ma'anshan|Anhui The Yangtze River Caishiji Cultural and Ecological Tourism Area has a long name and is quite large. ⏰ Enter from the North Gate in the morning, first climb the Santai Pavilion to see the Yangtze River bend below, with cargo ships moving slowly. ⚠️ Don't wear high heels; the stone paths and steps are challenging. Taibai Tower and Sanyuan Cave are next to each other; you can visit them along the way. 📍 The riverside boardwalk is worth a walk; the sound of the river lapping against the shore is deep, and the wind will make your hair a mess. In spring, the rapeseed flowers along the river bloom, a bright yellow against the gray river surface. 🍜 After leaving the scenic area, head to Dangtu for some large meat noodles; the noodles are chewy, the meat chunks are substantial, and a bowl costs around ten yuan. Ma'anshan is close to Nanjing, a 20-minute high-speed train ride, so you can easily combine visits. This place is suitable for those who appreciate history and river views; those purely interested in amusement park rides will be disappointed. 8️⃣ Taiyuan|Shanxi The Tianlong Mountain grottoes are heartbreakingly damaged, but the remaining statues still reveal their original appearance. ⏰ Go in the morning; the sunlight shines obliquely into the grottoes, making the Buddha's profile clearly visible. ⚠️ It's windy on the mountain; wear a hat. Don't use drones; they are prohibited. The Jinci Museum is Taiyuan's trump card. 📍 The Song Dynasty painted sculptures in the Holy Mother Hall feature maidens with varied expressions; staring at them for too long will give you goosebumps. The Nanlao Spring flows continuously, and the ancient cypress leans in the courtyard, still sprouting new leaves after three thousand years. Jinyang Lake Park is perfect for wrapping up in the evening. The lakeside path is wide; rent a tandem bicycle and ride around, watching the sunset turn the lake orange. 🍜 In the evening, head to the food street. Look for the glutinous rice balls from Laoshuku and Yangji Guanchang (a type of sausage). Don't buy them on the main road; venture into the alleys. Taiyuan has convenient public transportation, and taxis between attractions are inexpensive. When taking elderly people to Jinci Temple and Jinyang Lake, be mindful of the many steps at Tianlong Mountain. These eight places are known for their scenery, their flavors, and their inexplicable charm. If you've been to three, you're impressive; if you've been to five or more, let's chat in the comments. Some cities are meant to be passed through, while others are meant to be remembered for a lifetime. I urge you to visit these eight places as soon as possible, lest you regret it when you can no longer walk. 1️⃣ Liuzhou|Guangxi Liuzhou is more than just snail rice noodles. The stilted houses of Chengyang Bazhai are hidden in the valleys of the three rivers. ⏰ Arrive before 10 am; the morning mist will still be there, making the Drum Tower and Wind and Rain Bridge look like a traditional Chinese ink painting. Save the Liujiang River night view for 8 pm. A water bus ride costs only three yuan, running from the South Ferry Terminal to the East Embankment Terminal. The river breeze blows into your collar, and the lights on both banks dance in the water. 🍜 After disembarking, head to the Qingyun Market area for late-night snacks. The stir-fried snail rice noodles are even more fragrant than the soup version, and the smell of pickled bamboo shoots will linger with you all the way back to your hotel. It's okay for families with children, but the attractions are geared towards younger children. Adults buying separate tickets might feel like a waste. Zhaoqing isn't large; public transportation and taxis are cheap, making it suitable for a two-day, one-night weekend trip. Hohhot is best visited by car or chartered vehicle; public transportation to the grasslands and canyons is inconvenient. It's a good place to escape the summer heat, but too cold in winter, and the grasslands aren't worth seeing. 6️⃣ Ya'an|Sichuan Bifengxia Gorge is Ya'an's signature attraction. ⏰ In the morning, visit the Wildlife Park. Take a feeding cart into the predator enclosure; lions will be watching you through the windows—your heart rate will soar! ⚠️ Don't stick your hands out the window, and don't carry plastic bags in the monkey enclosure; the monkeys are incredibly fast at snatching things. These eight places—some rely on scenery, some on taste, and some on a certain indescribable charm. If you've been to three, you're impressive; if you've been to five or more, let's chat in the comments.

Don't want to be jostled by crowds over National Day? These 6️⃣ places everyone who's been says they're worth it 01 Shaoyang | Hunan Langshan isn't a single mountain but a Danxia peak forest. Lajiao Peak, Tianyi Alley, and Bajiao Village sell separate tickets, so don't try to do them all in one day. You'll be exhausted. ⏰ Enter Tianyi Alley at 6:30 AM, and you'll have only yourself and the wind in the rock crevice. At the narrowest section, turn sideways; if you're on the larger side, judge for yourself. 📍 To see the whale-like cloud surge from the top of Bajiao Village, wait for clearing after rain—clouds pour up from the valley like boiling water. Approaching from Ziyuan, Guangxi takes less effort, but Hunan's side has wilder scenery. 🍜 After descending, head to Xinning town for duck cooked in blood plasma—duck blood stir-fried with duck meat chunks, unapologetically spicy, best with a bowl of rice noodles to revive you. 🚄 It's about a 2-hour drive from Shaoyang station to Xinning; driving is recommended. ⚠️ During National Day the cable car queue can reach 2 hours. If you're fit, walk up—it's about a 40-minute climb. 02 Hinggan League | Inner Mongolia Arxan National Forest Park is called a mountain, but it mixes volcanoes, a tianchi, hot springs, and grassland. Camelfront Ridge's tianchi requires climbing 900 steps, and the view is worth that one look. ⏰ Arrive at Budong River before 8:00 AM. Morning mist hugs the water and cows cross the river by themselves. An hour later, the light is harsher. 📍 Rhododendron Lake blooms in May; at National Day it's a blue pool surrounded by golden larches. The stone forest is all black volcanic rock that cracks underfoot, like walking on a scorched pan. 🍜 Food in the park is expensive and so-so. Back in Yiershi town, try hand-pulled mutton dipped in chive-flower sauce. 🚄 Ulanhot to Arxan has slow green trains, but the view outside is all forest and meadows. ⚠️ Nights can drop to below freezing at the end of September, so don't skip the down jacket. The forest park ticket is valid for two days—stay inside to explore at a relaxed pace. 03 Ma'anshan | Anhui Caishiji sits by the Yangtze; legend says Li Bai got drunk here trying to scoop the moon. The park is small, but the river breeze relaxes you. ⏰ Head up Cuiluoshan after 4:00 PM; the sun slides into the river and cargo ships drift by like a slow-motion film. 📍 Sanyuan Cave is carved into the cliff; inside you can hear the river hitting the rocks. Taibai Tower has many inscriptions—if you can't read them, look at the eaves. 🍜 After the park, go to Dangtu county for a big bowl of meat noodles—thick noodles, chunky meat, and a slightly sweet broth. 🚄 It's about a 15-minute taxi from Ma'anshan East station. ⚠️ Don't buy "wild river fish" by the river during the closed fishing season—if someone sells it, they're dodgy. The park has many steps and is not stroller-friendly. 04 Ganzi | Sichuan Xinduqiao, Mugecuo, Daocheng Yading, Hailuogou are hundreds of kilometers apart—don't be greedy; pick two and you can play for a week. ⏰ The poplars in Xinduqiao turn fully golden in mid-October. Walking back from Tagong grassland, the whole way is dappled light. For Yading, reach Milk Lake before noon—afternoons change fast. 📍 For Mugecuo's seven-colored lake, taking the boat saves effort. Hailuogou's glacier tongue sits around 3,000 m; take the cable car, don't force a climb. 🍜 In Kangding try yak meat soup with barley cakes. In Daocheng town a local Tibetan restaurant does salty butter tea that's more authentic than the sweet kind. 🚄 There's a bus from Chengdu Xinnanmen station, but driving gives more freedom. ⚠️ Yading tickets plus shuttle are pricey. If your stamina is low, ride a horse, though the horse track only reaches Luorong Pasture. Don't push through altitude sickness—start taking rhodiola in advance. 05 Xi'an | Shaanxi The Terracotta Army, Zhongnan Mountain, the history museum, and the city wall together tell half of China's history. But in National Day Xi'an has more people than the terracotta warriors. ⏰ The Terracotta Army opens at 8:30 AM. Get there for the first wave to avoid crowds at Pit 1 and get a good rail-side view. Book the history museum in advance; if you can't, go to the Stele Forest instead. 📍 Don't only go to South Wutai on Zhongnan Mountain—Cuifengshan's tianchi is quieter. Access the wall from Yongning Gate and rent a bike for a two-hour loop. 🍜 At Saijin Bridge, meatball hu la tang with thick bread is more satisfying than the Muslim Quarter. 🚄 You can reach all sites by metro and bus, but for the Terracotta Army take Tourist Bus 5 and ignore roadside touts. ⚠️ The wall has better light after 5:00 PM, but don't return the bike late. The history museum is closed on Mondays except during the National Day holiday—follow official announcements. 06 Chengde | Hebei The Mountain Resort plus the Outer Eight Temples and Jinshanling Great Wall fit nicely into a two-day trip. The lake area of the resort mimics Jiangnan; take the ring mountain bus in the hills, and walk the plains yourself. ⏰ Enter through Lizheng Gate at 7:00 AM. The lake area still holds morning mist, like walking into a painting. The ring mountain bus starts at 8:30 AM; sit on the right to see the Little Potala Palace. 📍 The thousand-armed Guanyin at Puning Temple is over 20 m tall—your neck will ache looking up. Jinshanling is wilder than Badaling, with grass in the brick joints and climbable beacon towers. 🍜 After the resort, have a bowl of Pingquan mutton soup with sesame flatbread. 🚄 The high-speed train from Beijing to Chengde takes about 1 hour; there are shuttle buses to Jinshanling. ⚠️ The Outer Eight Temples have separate tickets—pick Puning Temple and Puto Zongcheng Temple. The Great Wall cable car lines are long; walking up takes about 40 minutes. 07 Yancheng | Jiangsu The Dafeng milu deer reserve has the world's largest milu herd. It's not a zoo but a wetland—deer roam free and you ride an electric cart to find them. ⏰ Arrive before 9:00 AM for shallow-water grazing close to the boardwalk. At noon they hide in the reeds and you'll only see their backs. 📍 The observation platform gives the best views—bring a telephoto lens. Fengshen Platform has an enclosed area where fawns come close. The electric cart drivers know where the deer are, so be polite when asking. 🍜 In Dafeng city try fish soup noodles—the broth is milky white like milk. 🚄 There's a bus from Yancheng station to Dafeng, but driving is more convenient. ⚠️ Don't feed or chase the deer. The reserve is large, so wear comfortable shoes. Tickets include the electric cart according to official info. 08 Linyi | Shandong The firefly water cave and the underground grand canyon are adjacent, and Yimeng Mountain is another area. The first is caving to see fireflies; the second is hiking to see rocks. ⏰ The firefly cave is entered by boat; it's pitch dark and green lights flash overhead. Don't use your phone—the light will scare them. 📍 The underground canyon's rafting is short but thrilling and will get you wet. Climb to Guimeng Peak on Yimeng Mountain to see the sea of clouds, and in autumn the hills turn red with persimmons. 🍜 In Linyi city, have beef san tang with fried dough sticks. 🚄 It's about a 1.5-hour drive from Linyi North station to Yishui. ⚠️ The firefly cave is cold—bring a jacket. The Yimeng cable car and rafting are charged separately—pick one. Ticket prices and opening rules are subject to official notice on the day. These eight places won't make you feel your travel money was wasted over National Day. Pick one, and save the rest for next time.

When traveling with parents, the two biggest fears are too much walking and complicated transfers. I've selected 8 destinations where you can take transport instead of walking, and take it slow instead of rushing. Let's be clear: pace is more important than checking off sights, and your parents' happiness is more important than good photos. 01 Nanjing | Jiangsu When taking parents to Nanjing, I usually schedule the Presidential Palace for the morning. Get there right when it opens; it's less crowded, there's plenty of shade, and there are chairs everywhere if you get tired. ⏰ I recommend arriving at 8:30 AM. Leave by 10:30 AM to perfectly avoid the big tour groups. In the afternoon, head to the Confucius Temple—Qinhuai Scenic Area, but don't try to squeeze in through the main entrance. 📍 Take a leisurely stroll in from the Dongshuiguan Ruins Park side. The path along the river is gentle and wheelchair-accessible. 🍜 Grab a bowl of duck blood vermicelli soup, but don't buy it in the main tourist area; walk a couple of steps into Gutong Lane for normal prices. Save Niushou Mountain for the second day. There's an elevator to the underground palace, and you basically don't have to climb the section around the Usnisa Palace. ⚠️ The scenic area is large, so take the sightseeing shuttle if you need to. Don't save that 20 yuan; your parents' knees are more valuable than the money. Save Xuanwu Lake for the evening. Walking half the lake is enough; rent an electric boat for an hour, and with the breeze, my mom could fall asleep. 02 Pingliang | Gansu Many people are put off by Kongtong Mountain just because it's a "mountain." But I think it's actually suitable for parents. There's a cable car to go up, and the plank road after getting off is gentle. You can reach the main viewing platform in just over an hour with stops. ⏰ Take the first cable car at 7:30 AM; the clouds and mist haven't cleared yet, so you don't need filters for photos. 📍 There's a rest area near Zhongtai where you can get free hot water. Bringing a thermos for your parents is very practical. ⚠️ Don't believe the touts at the foot of the mountain who say it "only takes 40 minutes to walk up"—that's 40 minutes for young people. Buy admission and cable car tickets separately; check official announcements for current prices. There are vendors selling Jingchuan jar buns at the foot of the mountain; buy a couple to keep handy for snacks. 03 Xiangxi | Hunan I've taken my parents to Fenghuang Ancient Town twice, and my only advice is: stay in the lower reaches of the Tuojiang River. The bar street upstream is noisy until 11:00 PM, while the downstream area is quiet, and you can still see stilt houses when you open the window. 🚄 Take the high-speed train to Fenghuang Ancient Town Station, then take a taxi for about 20 minutes to get into the ancient town—don't take unlicensed cabs. You can spend a day on Dehang Grand Canyon and Aizhai. Aizhai Bridge has a sightseeing passage with direct elevator access. You walk a short section of the glass plank road; my dad said he wasn't afraid, but he was gripping the railing for dear life. ⏰ Go to Aizhai after 4:00 PM; the light hitting the canyon walls makes the colors look best. Shibadong Village is great for a slow stroll; the stone paths are flat, and every household has peppers and corn drying at their door. 🍜 Have a meal of Miao-style sour fish soup in the village; it's mildly sour and easy for seniors to chew. ⚠️ The ladies in the ancient town braiding colorful hair will follow you for half a street. If you don't want it, just smile and wave them off—don't engage. 04 Zhumadian | Henan Chaya Mountain is a filming location for "Journey to the West." The rocks look strange, but the paths are well-maintained. Enter through the south gate with your parents and take the "magic carpet" (conveyor belt) up the mountain to skip the steepest stairs. 📍 It only takes about 10 minutes from the magic carpet exit to the Stone Monkey Courtyard, and the whole way is a gentle slope. ⏰ I recommend going in the morning; tour groups crowd the place in the afternoon, and the line for the magic carpet can be 40 minutes long. The Laoleshan area is better for the evening, but it's windy at the top, so bring a light jacket for your parents. ⚠️ Bottled water on the mountain is 5 yuan a bottle; it's not embarrassing to carry two up yourself. Staying one night in Zhumadian city is enough; choose a hotel near the high-speed train station for easy transfers the next day. 🍜 For breakfast, have a bowl of hot and sour soup with pan-fried buns; it only costs about 10 yuan for two people. This place isn't flashy, but it's solid, and your parents' generation will like it. 05 Shangrao | Jiangxi I took my parents to Sanqing Mountain and Wuyuan over two days. For Sanqing Mountain, take the Jinsha cable car up and walk the Nanqingyuan loop. See the "Giant Python Emerging from the Mountain" and "Oriental Goddess" and then leave. The whole trip takes 2.5 hours—don't overdo it. ⏰ The cable car opens at 7:00 AM; catch the first wave up and get down before 10:00 AM to perfectly avoid the crowds. ⚠️ The steps on the mountain can be slippery; have your parents wear non-slip shoes, not new ones. Choose either Jiangwan or Huangling in Wuyuan. I took my parents to Huangling; the cable car goes directly to Tianjie (Sky Street). The peppers and chrysanthemums drying for autumn were displayed on the windowsills, and my mom took 80 photos. 📍 There's a shop at the end of Tianjie selling steamed rice cakes; they're freshly steamed, soft, and easy to chew. If you're short on time, skip Guifeng; the hiking intensity is higher than Sanqing Mountain, and seniors won't be able to handle it. 06 Sanya | Hainan Going to Sanya during the National Day holiday is hot, but parents love it. Daxiao Dongtian and Tianya Haijiao both have flat seaside plank roads. If you get tired, take the sightseeing shuttle; you don't have to climb a single step the whole way. ⏰ Go to Tianya Haijiao at 7:00 AM; it's not too hot, and the light is soft. 📍 You have to queue to take photos next to the "Nantian Yizhu" rock, but if you walk 50 meters to the left, the angle is the same and no one is fighting for it. Take a boat to Wuzhizhou Island; there's an electric shuttle loop on the island. Take your parents for a ride and get off at Guariyan (Sun-Watching Rock) to take a look. ⚠️ Prices on the island are high—a bowl of noodles is 40–50 yuan—so eat your fill at the pier before getting on the island. Yalong Bay is great for the evening; the sand is fine. My mom took off her shoes to splash in the water and was as happy as a child. 🚄 A taxi from Sanya Station to Yalong Bay is about 40 yuan; there are also direct buses, but they are slow. 07 Karamay | Xinjiang Urho Ghost City sounds scary, but it's actually perfect for parents. You ride a small train through the whole scenic area and get off at four viewing platforms to take photos. It's windy but the roads are flat, so it's not tiring at all. ⏰ Enter after 6:00 PM; the sun shines obliquely on the Yardang landforms, and the whole area of mounds is golden red. 📍 The second viewing platform has the best angle; don't spend too long at the first stop. ⚠️ It's windy in the Ghost City, so bring a hat with a strap. My mom's sun hat was blown away once, and she chased it for 200 meters. There's no shade in the scenic area, so apply sunscreen thickly. Stay one night in Karamay city, and go see Black Oil Mountain the next day. The pumpjack is right by the road; my dad stared at it for 10 minutes and said this thing is really interesting. 08 Ma'anshan | Anhui Caishiji on the Yangtze River is a place I personally really like. The plank road along the river is well-paved. It takes 40 minutes to stroll slowly from the main gate to Sanyuan Cave, and the river breeze keeps it from feeling stuffy. ⏰ Go at 4:00 PM; the sun isn't harsh, and cargo ships pass slowly on the river. 📍 You can sit and rest on the stone steps next to Taibai Pavilion and watch the river flow. My dad said it's better than watching TV at home. ⚠️ Don't engage with people selling calligraphy and paintings in the scenic area; just look and keep walking. Admission isn't expensive; check official announcements for current prices. 🍜 After leaving the scenic area, find a shop selling Dangtu braised pork noodles; the noodles are chewy, and the meat is stewed until tender, so it's easy for parents to eat. Ma'anshan is close to Nanjing—a 10-minute high-speed train ride—so you can combine it into one trip with Nanjing without backtracking. Of these 8 places, I personally recommend Nanjing, Sanya, and Ma'anshan. One has convenient transport, one is flat the whole way, and one is quiet and affordable. When taking parents out during the National Day holiday, walking a little less and sitting a little more is better than anything else. Where are you planning to take them? Let's chat in the comments section.

There are plenty of hidden gems within a 1-hour high-speed train ride from Nanjing. These 5 small cities require no complex planning or time off work—just pack your bags for a spontaneous weekend trip and enjoy a pace of life so slow you won't want to leave. 🚄 Travel Tips: All 5 cities are accessible by high-speed train in 26 minutes to 1 hour. Taxis within the cities start at the base fare, making them perfect for a relaxed 2-day, 1-night trip. ① Liyang, Changzhou | Start at Tianmu Lake, where you can experience the lake, bamboo forests, and hot springs all in one go 🏨 Accommodation Suggestions: 1. Lake-view homestays in the Tianmu Lake area (first choice for lake views right from your window) 2. Hot spring hotels near Yushui Hot Spring (convenient for soaking) 3. Chain hotels in downtown Liyang (great value) 📸 2-Day, 1-Night Itinerary: Day 1: Nanjing South → Liyang (approx. 26 minutes) → Take a boat to Longxing Island at Tianmu Lake Landscape Garden → Pick tea at Tea Island → Stay overnight by the lake Day 2: Tianmu Lake Nanshan Bamboo Sea (35,000 acres; take the ground funicular + cable car to the peak of Wuyue Diyi Peak) → Soak in Yushui Hot Spring in the afternoon (218 in the off-season) → Return trip 🍜 Food: Try the fish head casserole made with silver carp, paired with white celery and braised pork liver. 💡 Tips to Avoid Pitfalls: 1. There are combo tickets for the Bamboo Sea + hot springs, which are more cost-effective. 2. A taxi from Liyang Station to the resort area takes about 15 minutes; don't trust quotes from unlicensed taxis. 3. Set aside a full day for Tianmu Lake; 2 days and 1 night is just right. ② Taizhou, Jiangsu | A street full of old-fashioned morning tea shops and the slow pace of Qintong Ancient Town 🏨 Accommodation Suggestions: Lake-view hotels by Fengcheng River | Chain hotels in the city center | Inns near the ancient town 📸 2-Day, 1-Night Itinerary: Day 1: High-speed train (approx. 1 hour) → Qintong Ancient Town (60) → Take a boat through the reed marshes at Qinhu Wetland Park to see the milu deer → Night market on the old street Day 2: Traditional morning tea (dried tofu strips + crab roe soup dumplings + fish soup noodles) → Fengcheng River walkway → Daohe Ancient Street District → Return trip 🍜 Food: Eat the crab roe soup dumplings while they're hot, or the soup will congeal. 💡 Tips to Avoid Pitfalls: 1. Go to local, long-standing shops for authentic morning tea. 2. You can finish exploring the ancient town in half a day; no need to stay there. 3. Combo tickets for the wetland park are cheaper than buying single tickets. ③ Zhenjiang, Jiangsu | Climb the ancient streets of Xijindu and enjoy pot-lid noodles with aspic pork 🏨 Accommodation Suggestions: Hotels along the Yangtze River for river views | Inns in the old houses of Xijindu | Chain hotels in the city center 📸 2-Day, 1-Night Itinerary: Day 1: High-speed train (approx. 30 minutes) → Xijindu (free; ancient streets winding up the mountain) → Zhenjiang Museum (free) → Night views Day 2: Jinshan (65; Jinshan Temple looks like it's floating on the river from a distance) → Vegetarian noodles at Jinshan Temple → Jiaoshan (65; take a boat to the island to see the Forest of Steles) → Return trip 🍜 Food: Pot-lid noodles with aspic pork are most authentic in the morning. 💡 Tips to Avoid Pitfalls: 1. Parking is difficult in Xijindu; taking the high-speed train and a taxi is more stress-free. 2. Choose either Jinshan or Jiaoshan. 3. Many pot-lid noodle shops close in the afternoon. ④ Ma'anshan, Anhui | Where the Yangtze River takes a big turn 🏨 Accommodation Suggestions: Chain hotels in the city center | River-view rooms near Caishiji | Hotels by Yushan Lake 📸 2-Day, 1-Night Itinerary: Day 1: High-speed train (18 minutes) → Caishiji (64; climb Santai Pavilion for a bird's-eye view of the Yangtze River's big turn) → Taibai Pavilion → Walk around Yushan Lake Day 2: Breakfast of Dangtu pork noodles → Putang Bamboo Sea (40; experience the "Strange Slope") → Zhuran Culture Park (free) → Return trip 🍜 Food: Dangtu pork noodles, with pork belly stewed until it melts in your mouth. 💡 Tips to Avoid Pitfalls: 1. You must climb Santai Pavilion; it's the only place for a panoramic view. 2. Remember to bring a bottle of water to test the "Strange Slope" at Putang. 3. A day trip is possible, but staying overnight is more relaxed. ⑤ Chuzhou, Anhui | The Zuiweng Pavilion hidden in Langya Mountain 🏨 Accommodation Suggestions: Hotels by Nanhu Lake | Inns at the foot of Langya Mountain | Chain hotels near Tianchang Road 📸 2-Day, 1-Night Itinerary: Day 1: High-speed train (approx. 20 minutes) → Langya Mountain (55; Zuiweng Pavilion + Langya Ancient Trail, finished in 2 hours) → Boating on Shenxiu Lake → Nanhu Park Day 2: Potstickers at the morning market → Ruins of the Ming Zhongdu Imperial City in Fengyang (free; remains of the Ming Dynasty capital) → Fengyang stuffed tofu → Return trip 🍜 Food: The bottom of Chuzhou potstickers is crispy; Fengyang stuffed tofu is tender and juicy when you bite into it. 💡 Tips to Avoid Pitfalls: 1. The slopes of Langya Mountain are gentle, making the whole route easy to walk. 2. It's cooler in the mountains than in the city, so bring a light jacket. 3. It's perfectly fine to sleep in and start your day late. Five healing small cities—save this list and visit them one by one on your weekends!

The biggest fear when traveling with parents isn't that the scenery won't be good enough; it's too many stairs, too much walking, and waiting in long lines. I've screened these 8 destinations based on the criteria of "less walking, more riding, and rest whenever needed," so the whole trip is stress-free. 1️⃣ Zhangjiajie | Hunan First, the verdict: Zhangjiajie is doable, but don't push it. The Wulingyuan Scenic Area has full coverage of eco-friendly shuttle buses. You can take buses between Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain, so if your parents can't walk, they can just ride and enjoy the mountain views—it's just as breathtaking. ⏰ Enter the park before 7:00 AM. The fog hasn't cleared yet, there are no lines for the cable cars, and you can finish the core viewing platforms before noon. I advise caution with Tianmen Mountain. The 999-step "Heaven's Ladder" will make your legs weak just looking at it—just buy the escalator ticket, don't try to save money there. 📍 The lower station of the Tianmen Mountain Cableway is right in the city. Taking a taxi to the cableway company entrance is less stressful than driving yourself. The mountaintop boardwalk is divided into east and west lines; take your parents on the west line—it's flat and can be finished in 40 minutes. The Golden Whip Stream in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is a flat path along the stream the whole way, perfect for parents to stroll slowly. ⚠️ Don't trust the "no-line fast track" offers on the side of the road; buying tickets through official channels is the safest bet. 🍜 After coming down the mountain, go to the city for "Sanxiaguo" (three-pot dish). Choose the mild spicy version and pair it with "Haozi Baba" (mugwort cakes)—it's something older people can enjoy too. For accommodation, choose the area near the Wulingyuan landmark gate. It's a 5-minute walk to the ticket gate, so you can return to the hotel for a nap at noon. Tickets are valid for 4 days, so don't rush—playing in one area per day is just right. 2️⃣ Xinyang | Henan Jigong Mountain is my personal recommendation for a summer retreat for parents. The altitude isn't high, but it's 5–6 degrees cooler than the city in summer, so bring a light jacket for mornings and evenings. 🚄 It takes about 40 minutes by taxi from Xinyang East Station to Jigong Mountain. There are sightseeing buses on the mountain to connect to various attractions, so no climbing is needed. ⏰ Go to Baoxiao Peak after 4:00 PM. The light is soft, there are few stairs, and it takes 20 minutes to walk slowly to the top. 📍 The old villa area of the International Architecture Group has flat roads and dense trees, making it suitable for pushing a wheelchair. ⚠️ Restaurant prices on the mountain are on the higher side, so I suggest bringing your own water and small snacks. 🍜 When you go down to the city, find a Xinyang restaurant and order the Nanwan fish head soup and stir-fried eggs with Maojian tea—it's very fresh. Stay in Shihe District and take a walk along the river at night; the pace slows down immediately. This place isn't for "check-in" style tourists; it's for parents who want to rest for a few days. 3️⃣ Ma'anshan | Anhui The Yangtze River Caishiji Cultural Ecological Tourism Zone has a long name, but it's really easy on the legs. The scenic area has electric carts that take just a few minutes from the main gate to Taibai Pavilion. The boardwalk along the river is flat, and with the river breeze blowing, your parents will be in a good mood. 📍 Sanyuan Cave and Emei Pavilion are right next to each other, so you can finish them in one go without backtracking. ⏰ It's best to go at 5:00 PM. The sunset over the river with cargo ships in the background makes for great photos without needing filters. ⚠️ There are some stairs in the scenic area leading to the reefs by the river; don't go down if you have elderly people with you—it's safer to view from afar. 🍜 After leaving the scenic area, take a taxi to Jiefang Road and find a Dangtu big meat noodle shop. The noodles are soft and tender, and the meat portions are generous. Ma'anshan isn't big, and half a day is enough; it's a good stopover if you're near Nanjing. Stay in Yushan District; it's only a 15-minute drive to Caishiji the next day. 4️⃣ Putian | Fujian Meizhou Island Mazu Cultural Tourism Zone has sightseeing buses available throughout the island after you take the ferry over. 📍 The Mazu Ancestral Temple is on the hilltop, but the bus can drive halfway up. There aren't many stairs left, just a 10-minute slow walk. ⏰ The ferries before 8:00 AM are less crowded, the island is cool, and you can finish visiting the Ancestral Temple and Goose Tail God Stone Park before noon. ⚠️ Buy ferry tickets and island entry tickets separately. Book in advance on official platforms; queuing on-site will be hot. There are many homestays on the island; choose one near the Ancestral Temple for easy afternoon naps. 🍜 Try Mazu noodles and Pinghai Mazu cakes—they are light and easy on older teeth. This place is suitable for elders with a religious connection; the atmosphere is quiet. If your parents don't believe in these things, they might find it average, so focus on the seaside boardwalk—you can't go wrong with the sea breeze and ocean views. 5️⃣ Linfen | Shanxi The Hongtong Dahuaishu Ancestral Root Worship Garden is flat the whole way, and you can ride the electric cart anywhere for 10 yuan. 📍 The Ancestral Worship Hall and the Ancient Locust Tree ruins are next to each other and can be visited in an hour, suitable for seniors with average mobility. ⏰ Go in the morning when it's less crowded and the guides have time to explain things slowly. For the Yellow River Hukou Waterfall Tourism Zone, the Shanxi side offers a closer view of the waterfall, but it's windy. ⚠️ The ground at the viewing platform is slippery, so be sure to hold onto your parents. 🍜 Eat a bowl of beef meatball noodles outside the scenic area—it's hot and filling. I put Yunqiu Mountain last because you have to climb, but the cable car plus electric cart can save 80% of your energy. The ice cave group is worth seeing; you'll need a jacket when you go inside in summer. These spots in Linfen are scattered, so I suggest chartering a car or driving yourself. Do one direction per day and don't try to do too much. Stay in Yaodu District for more dining options. 6️⃣ Garzê | Sichuan Garzê Prefecture is large, but if you pick the right spots, your parents can enjoy it too. Xinduqiao is at an altitude of 3,300 meters, suitable as a first stop to acclimate. 📸 The poplar forests by the road are golden in October; you can just park and take photos without walking. ⚠️ Don't wash your hair or walk fast when you first arrive, and have oxygen bottles ready. Mugecuo has sightseeing buses to the mountaintop. The boardwalk by the lake is flat; it's a 20-minute walk to the Medicine Pool Boiling Spring to soak your feet and relieve fatigue. I advise against taking seniors to Daocheng Yading; the altitude is too high, and the long-distance hike is too much. If you want to go, just do the short route to Pearl Lake. The Hailuogou Glacier cable car goes directly to Camp No. 4 to see the Gongga Snow Mountain, so no climbing is required. 🚄 I suggest flying to Kangding or Daocheng and chartering a car to travel, keeping daily driving time under 3 hours. 🍜 Eat yak meat soup pot and butter tea to warm up. Stay in lower-altitude Kangding or Moxi Town for a good night's sleep. 7️⃣ Shannan | Tibet Yamdrok Lake is a 2-hour drive from Lhasa. 🚄 Chartering a car is the most reliable way. You'll cross the Gangbala Pass on the way, which is nearly 5,000 meters high, so don't let your parents get out and walk around vigorously. ⏰ Arrive at the lakeside at noon for the best light; the lake water is an unreal shade of blue. 📍 The viewing platform has stairs, but it's fine if you walk slowly. There are also flat areas by the lake where you can get closer. ⚠️ It's windy and cold, so down jackets and hats are a must. Don't push yourself. 🍜 On the way back, have a bowl of Tibetan noodles in Langkazi County—simple and hot. This place is suitable for parents who are in good health and don't have severe altitude sickness. If their heart and lung function is average, I suggest just staying around Lhasa; don't take risks. Ticket prices and opening hours are subject to official daily announcements. 8️⃣ Zhaoqing | Guangdong Star Lake includes the Seven Star Crags and Dinghu Mountain areas. Seven Star Crags has cruise boats; you can see the crags from the boat without your parents having to walk a single step. 📍 Board the boat at Paifang Square for a 40-minute loop around the lake. After getting off, the greenway along the lake is flat; rent an electric cart and drive it yourself to save energy. ⏰ Go at 7:00 AM when local seniors are doing their morning exercises; the air is good. ⚠️ You have to climb Dinghu Mountain, so if you have seniors with you, just take the sightseeing bus to Qingyun Temple instead of walking up. 🍜 Have Zhaoqing wrapped rice dumplings (zongzi) for breakfast; the glutinous rice is soft and the filling is fragrant. Stay in Duanzhou District, which is close to Star Lake, and watch the musical fountain at night. Zhaoqing has a slow pace and friendly prices, making it suitable for staying with your parents for 3–5 days, visiting a little bit each day without getting tired. Of these 8 places, Zhangjiajie and Garzê require a bit of physical stamina, while Xinyang, Ma'anshan, and Zhaoqing are the most relaxing. When traveling with your parents, every step saved counts—don't tire them out just for the sake of checking off a list. Where are you planning to take them first?

You must visit Caishiji at least once to feel the Yangtze breeze and walk the riverbank where the Poet Immortal once lingered for a thousand years. Among the three famous cliffs of the Yangtze, Caishiji stands first. Compared to the bustling atmosphere of Yanzi Ji or the vastness of Chengling Ji, Caishiji in Ma'anshan possesses a unique gentleness and character. Backed by the lush, rolling Cuiluo Mountain and facing the ceaseless flow of the Yangtze, it is free from the noise of over-commercialization, offering only the tranquility of the forest, the vast river breeze, and the deep heritage of Tang poetry. Stepping into the scenic area on an early autumn afternoon, you are greeted by a sea of green. The mountain paths are gentle and winding, shaded by towering ancient trees. Dappled sunlight filters through the leaves, casting patterns on the bluestone trails—a gentle and healing sight. As you stroll along, far from the hustle and bustle of the city, the only sounds are the wind, the rustling leaves, and the faint roar of the river in the distance, instantly calming your restless heart. Following the forest path, the first landmark you encounter is the solemn and elegant Taibai Pavilion. Built during the Tang Dynasty, this pavilion features upturned eaves, dark tiles, and vermilion railings. Standing against the mountain and overlooking the river, it is the soul of Caishiji. For centuries, Li Bai visited this place many times, drinking by the river and embracing the moon, leaving behind countless timeless poems. From the pavilion, looking out over the railing, you can see the vast Yangtze surging forward. The river is wide, the water flows endlessly, and sails chase the waves. Here, you finally understand the magnificent imagery of the ancient poem, "The Tianmen Mountain is split by the surging Chu River." Inside the pavilion, the Poet Immortal's poems, calligraphy, paintings, and historical relics are on display. Every brick, tile, pillar, and plaque holds a sense of romance and freedom that has spanned a millennium. Continuing along the riverside boardwalk, you will reach Sanyuan Cave, nestled in the sheer cliffs overlooking the river. The cave is embedded in the precipice, with the rushing river below—a place both serene and precipitous. Standing at the cave entrance facing the river, the breeze brushes against your face, carrying the moist, cool scent of the water. Below, the river churns, while in the distance, the mountains and water merge, and the river and sky blend into one, offering an incredibly expansive view. Legend has it that scholars of the past often came here to read and enjoy the scenery. Sitting here, watching the river flow eastward and listening to the waves crashing against the shore, you feel as if you are having a conversation across time with the scholars of the past. Climbing the stone steps to the summit of Cuiluo Mountain, you will find the magnificent Santai Pavilion standing atop the peak. This five-story pavilion is simple yet grand, with its eaves reaching toward the clouds, serving as the highest point of the entire scenic area. From the top floor, you can take in the panoramic view: the city of Ma'anshan is laid out in an orderly fashion, surrounded by rolling green mountains, while the vast Yangtze winds its way eastward with boats slowly passing by. The grandeur of the landscape is fully revealed. With the mountains, river, and city integrated into one, the view is deeply healing, and all your fatigue vanishes into the vastness of the landscape. Deep in the mountains, you will find Li Bai's cenotaph and the Lianbi Terrace cliff carvings. The bluestone tombstone stands quietly in the shade, peaceful and serene. The cliff carvings, weathered by the elements, are warm and profound, recording the changes of a thousand years. There are no noisy crowds here, only the breeze accompanying the ancient trees, silently telling the story of the thousand-year bond between the Poet Immortal and Caishiji. Strolling through the scenic area, the most moving aspect is the perfect balance between motion and stillness. The forests, ancient pavilions, and stone carvings are still, while the thousand-year-old Yangtze is in motion, and the ceaseless river breeze feels alive. Every step reveals a new scene, and every scene evokes a poem, blending the gentle tranquility of the Jiangnan landscape with the magnificent grandeur of the Yangtze River. Here, there is no need to rush your itinerary or chase check-ins. Simply walk slowly, observe quietly, feel the evening breeze of the Yangtze, experience the passion of the Poet Immortal as he once drank and embraced the moon, and touch the cultural heritage accumulated over a thousand years. The mountains and rivers remain, and the river breeze blows as it always has. A trip to Caishiji is a date with the landscape and a date with a thousand-year-old poetic soul. The landscape never disappoints, and the breeze and moonlight are at their gentlest. This is a uniquely healing and romantic scene on the south bank of the Yangtze.

Don't want to deal with National Day crowds? These 4️⃣ budget-friendly small cities are a great deal 01 Jiaxing | Zhejiang Visiting Wuzhen and Xitang during National Day, the biggest trap isn't the ticket price, it's the crowds. ⏰ Enter Xitang before 7:00 AM. The scenic area hasn't woken up yet, and the Misty Rain Corridor along the river only has cleaning staff and cats. By 10:00 AM, when the tour groups flood in, you'll have to queue just to take photos. Wuzhen is divided into East and West Scenic Zones; I recommend choosing just one. The East Zone is small and old, taking 2 hours to explore. The West Zone is large with impressive night views, but accommodation is ridiculously expensive. To save money, stay outside the scenic area. 🚄 Take a direct bus from Tongxiang Station for just a few yuan. 🍜 For food, don't buy Dingsheng cake on the main street of the scenic area. Walk into the alleys; the braised duck shops where locals queue are the real deal. ⚠️ Xitang's bar street is noisy at night; avoid it if you're traveling with seniors or children. 02 Huangnan | Qinghai Kanbula might sound like an obscure place, but the scenery is top-notch. ⏰ October is the perfect time to visit. The Danxia landforms are bright red, and the Yellow River water is incredibly clear. It's about a 2-hour drive from Xining. 🚄 There is no direct high-speed train, so carpooling or chartering a car is more flexible. You need to transfer to a sightseeing bus inside the scenic area, and the route is fixed. 📍 Don't miss the Lijiaxia Reservoir viewing platform, where you can see both the red cliffs and the blue water. ⚠️ The altitude is over 2,000 meters, so don't run or jump; walk slowly. The ticket plus bus fare is over CNY 100, and it's half as crowded as Chaka Salt Lake. It's perfect for those who want to avoid crowds but still see grand scenery. Bring a thick jacket; the wind at the mountain pass is strong enough to blow your hat off. 03 Garzê | Sichuan Garzê is huge. To explore it on a budget during National Day, you have to be selective. Xinduqiao is a photographer's paradise. ⏰ In mid-October, the poplar trees turn completely yellow, and it's free. Mugecuo's ticket plus sightseeing bus costs nearly CNY 200; the lake is beautiful, but the value is average, so I recommend prioritizing Xinduqiao. Daocheng Yading is the main event and also the most expensive stop. The ticket plus sightseeing bus is over CNY 200, and staying in Yading Village is even pricier. ⚠️ Altitude sickness is no joke; arrive in Kangding 2 days early to acclimate. The Hailuogou Glacier is stunning up close. 🚄 Take a bus from Chengdu to Moxi Town and soak in a hot spring to relieve fatigue. 🍜 Eat plenty of yak meat hot pot on the road; it's warming and filling. Solo travelers or couples should stick to Xinduqiao and Hailuogou; skip Yading if traveling with seniors. 04 Ankang | Shaanxi Ankang is in southern Shaanxi. October is neither cold nor hot, perfect for a leisurely stroll. The water in Qianceng River is green. ⏰ It's best to go after the rain when the waterfalls are full. However, the mountain roads are slippery, so ⚠️ wear non-slip shoes and don't wear white sneakers, or you'll regret it. The Fengyan Ancient Terraced Fields are golden this season. 📍 It's about a 1-hour drive from Hanyin County. There's no entrance fee for the terraces, just a CNY 10 parking fee. It's great for parents; you can walk and stop as you please without getting tired. 🍜 Ankang steamed noodles and hot and sour konjac are local specialties; small shops in the city are half the price of those in the scenic area. 🚄 It takes about 2 hours to get from Xi'an to Ankang by high-speed train; book your National Day tickets in advance. To save money, stay in Hanyin County instead of the scenic area homestays. 05 Wuzhong | Ningxia Qingtongxia Yellow River Grand Canyon has a long name but few tourists. ⏰ After 4:00 PM, the light hits at an angle, making the Yellow River water shimmer with gold; you won't need filters for your photos. 🚄 It's a quick high-speed train ride from Yinchuan to Wuzhong, then take a taxi to the scenic area. The main highlights are the dam and the 108 Pagodas. 📍 The pagoda cluster is on the hillside; climb up for a panoramic view of the canyon. ⚠️ There are few dining options in the scenic area, so bring your own water and snacks. The ticket plus boat fare is just over CNY 100, cheaper than Shapotou. It's perfect for those who want to see the Yellow River without queuing. It's windy in October, so wearing a hat is more practical than using an umbrella. 06 Yueyang | Hunan Yueyang Tower, Dongting Lake, and Junshan Island can all be visited in 1 day. ⏰ Visit Yueyang Tower in the morning when it's less crowded and cooler. You can get free admission if you can recite the "Yueyang Tower Record," so why not take advantage of that? 📍 After coming down, walk along Dongting Lake and take a boat to Junshan Island. There are spotted bamboo forests and tea plantations on the island; take your time and explore for 3 hours. ⚠️ Boat tickets are in high demand during National Day, so buy your round-trip tickets in advance. 🍜 Yueyang's shrimp cakes and barbecue are worth trying; don't eat fish at the scenic area entrance, as it's expensive and mediocre. 🚄 Take the high-speed train to Yueyang East Station, then take a bus directly to the scenic area. If traveling with seniors, you can take a sightseeing bus on Junshan Island to save energy. 07 Ma'anshan | Anhui Caishiji is by the Yangtze River, where Li Bai once drank wine. ⏰ It's most comfortable to go in the evening; the river breeze and sunset are great, and there aren't many people on the boardwalk. 🚄 It only takes a little over 10 minutes to get from Nanjing to Ma'anshan by high-speed train, which is faster than going to downtown Nanjing. 📍 Taibai Pavilion and Sanyuan Cave are the main highlights; climbing the stairs is a bit tiring but worth it. ⚠️ The scenic area stops admitting visitors at 5:30 PM, so don't arrive right at the deadline. The ticket isn't expensive, and students can get half-price admission with a student ID. 🍜 The pork noodles and dried tofu in the city are local flavors and more affordable than in the scenic area. It's suitable for a half-day trip; if you're passing through from Nanjing, staying for a night won't break the bank. 08 Baicheng | Jilin Da'an Nenjiang Bay, the wetlands of Northeast China in autumn. ⏰ In October, the reeds turn completely white, looking like snow when the wind blows. 🚄 Baicheng has a train station, and it takes a few hours from Changchun. The scenic area ticket is cheap, and the sightseeing bus is extra. 📍 You can see wild geese and ducks flying south from the bird-watching platform at Nenjiang Bay; it's even better if you bring binoculars. ⚠️ There are many mosquitoes in the wetlands, so don't mind the heat and wear long sleeves and pants. 🍜 Baicheng's mutton hot pot and sticky bean buns are filling and cost just a few dozen yuan per person. It's perfect for those on a tight budget who want some peace and quiet. It's already cold in Northeast China during National Day, so you might want to bring a down jacket. Of these 8 places, I personally recommend Ankang and Baicheng the most. One is lush and watery, the other is vast and open. With fewer people and lower costs, this is how National Day should be spent. Which one have you been to? Let's chat in the comments.

Where to go for a budget-friendly Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day trip? 8 hidden gems, student-tested and approved. 1️⃣ Weinan | Shaanxi If you want to climb a mountain during the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day but are afraid of breaking the bank, Huashan is a must. The peak season admission ticket is CNY 160, student tickets are half price, and the West Peak cable car is CNY 280 round trip—which is definitely painful for the wallet—but taking the North Peak cable car up and hiking down can save you enough for a bowl of paomo. ⏰ If you want to see the sunrise, start climbing at 10:00 PM from Yuquan Temple and wait at the East Peak at 4:00 AM for the day to break, saving you one night's accommodation. 📍 Take the free bus from Huashan North Station to the tourist center; don't trust the touts offering "door-to-door service." Bottled water on the mountain is CNY 10 each; bring two bottles, and self-heating rice meals are more filling than instant noodles. ⚠️ During National Day, the queue for the Plank Walk in the Sky starts at two hours. If you're afraid of heights, don't bother; photos from the West Peak are just as good. Remember to bring a light down jacket for the night climb; the wind at the summit is strong enough to blow you away. Buy gloves at the foot of the mountain for CNY 2 a pair; your hands will hurt from gripping the iron chains for too long. 2️⃣ Wuhan | Hubei The Yellow Crane Tower admission ticket is CNY 70, and CNY 35 for students, but honestly, taking a silhouette photo of the red wall at Shengli Bridge outside is enough. If you want to climb the tower, get there for the first batch of visitors when it opens at 8:00 AM; there are fewer people and the light is soft. 📍 The Simenkou overpass is a classic photo spot, right outside Exit C of Simenkou Yellow Crane Tower Station on Metro Line 5. The East Lake Greenway is free; rent a shared bike to ride the Moshan section, which saves you CNY 60 compared to taking the sightseeing bus. ⏰ After 5:00 PM, the lake surface glitters with gold, and the path at Luoyan Scenic Area is almost empty. Songyang Temple is in Caidian, requiring two bus transfers, making it perfect if you want to escape the crowds. Mulan Grassland is in Huangpi; it takes nearly 3 hours to get there from the city center by metro and bus. ⚠️ A round trip on the same day is too rushed, so it's better to stay for one night. 🍜 A set of Zhao Shifu's oil cake stuffed with shaomai on Liangdao Street is CNY 9, which is more substantial than the food at Hubu Alley. The hot dry noodles for CNY 5 on the street are delicious; don't wait in long lines at the viral shops. 3️⃣ Yinchuan | Ningxia In autumn, the reeds at Mingcui Lake National Wetland Park turn white. Buying a combo ticket for admission and the boat online is CNY 20 cheaper. 📍 Take Tourist Bus No. 6 from the city center, or if driving, it's 10 mins from the Jingzang Expressway exit. ⏰ Go in the morning for the birds, and in the afternoon for the light, which is perfect for photographing the reeds. The Helan Mountain Rock Art admission ticket is CNY 70; the electric cart is extra, but it's only a 20-min walk to the core area. ⚠️ Touching the rock art is prohibited, so keep your hands to yourself. The Shuidonggou combo ticket is CNY 140 including transport; the section with the hidden military cave is interesting, but expect to wait in line to enter the cave during National Day. The Western Xia Tombs admission ticket is CNY 88 including the sightseeing cart; the No. 3 Mausoleum is the largest, and I recommend renting an audio guide. 🍜 At the Huaiyuan Night Market, you can eat your fill of la huhu and lamb skewers for about CNY 30 per person. Buses in Yinchuan are CNY 1, and taxis start at CNY 7. Staying near the Drum Tower in the old town is the most convenient. 4️⃣ Zhanjiang | Guangdong The Huguangyan admission ticket is CNY 50, and CNY 25 for students. A loop around the lake is 7 km, and you can rent a tandem bike for CNY 40 per hour. 📍 Take Bus No. 9 from the city center to the East Gate; don't go to the West Gate by mistake, as it's out of the way. ⏰ Locals get in for free before 7:00 AM, so if you can get up early, you'll save some money. The water of Maar Lake is as calm as a mirror, and the banyan tree roots hang into the water; you don't need filters for your photos. ⚠️ Bottled water in the scenic area is CNY 5; buy it at the small shop at the entrance before going in. 🍜 After leaving the scenic area, go to Mazhang Market for beef offal; it's CNY 15 a bowl, half the price of the restaurants in the scenic area. It takes 40 mins by bus from Zhanjiang city center to Huguangyan, making it perfect for a half-day trip. In the afternoon, head back to Chikan Old Street to wander through the arcade buildings and eat a bowl of seafood noodles; you can spend less than CNY 150 for the whole day. 5️⃣ Garzê | Sichuan Xinduqiao is free, but accommodation prices triple during National Day, so booking a month in advance can save you half the cost. 📍 Carpooling from Kangding costs about CNY 50 per person; if driving, take the 318 National Highway over Zheduo Mountain. ⚠️ It might snow in October, so have snow chains ready. ⏰ Before 8:00 AM, the light hits the poplar trees; it's not called a photographer's paradise for nothing. The Mugecuo admission ticket plus sightseeing bus is CNY 195, which is expensive but worth it; soaking your feet in the hot springs is CNY 30. The Daocheng Yading admission ticket is CNY 146 plus CNY 120 for the sightseeing bus, with electric carts extra; the short route from Chonggu Temple to Pearl Lake takes 3 hours, which is enough. The Hailuogou Glacier Forest Park admission ticket is CNY 90, and the cable car is CNY 150. ⚠️ If the weather is bad, the cable car will stop running, so check the announcements before you go. 🍜 In Kangding city, have yak beef hot pot for about CNY 60 per person. Garzê is generally better suited for chartered cars or carpooling as public transport is limited. If your budget is tight, choose Xinduqiao and Mugecuo for two days; don't try to do too much. 6️⃣ Songyuan | Jilin It's not yet time for winter fishing at Chagan Lake during National Day, but the lake fish are at their fattest. 📍 Take a bus from the city center to the Chagan Lake tourist area, which takes about 1 hour; if driving, take the Hunwu Expressway. ⏰ Watch the sunset by the lake in the evening; there are many water birds in the reed marshes, and you can explore without buying a boat ticket. Jinchan Island is in the middle of the lake; the boat ride there and back is CNY 50. There's only a pavilion on the island. ⚠️ It's not worth the ticket price; just take a photo from afar. 🍜 The full fish feast at the lakeside fishing village is about CNY 80 per person; the fathead fish stewed with tofu is cheaper than at the entrance of the scenic area. Stay in Qian'an County; a standard room is CNY 120, which is half the price of the lakeside homestays. Songyuan is suitable for a stopover; half a day at Chagan Lake and half a day in the city is enough, don't make a special trip just for it. It's windy in October, so bring a thick jacket. 7️⃣ Ma'anshan | Anhui The Caishiji admission ticket is CNY 68, and CNY 34 for students; it's the place where Li Bai got drunk and tried to catch the moon. 📍 Take Tourist Bus No. 1 from Ma'anshan East Station, which takes 40 mins. ⏰ After 3:00 PM, the light slants into Sanyuan Cave, and the shadows of the boats on the river look great. The boardwalk along the river is flat, so both the elderly and children can walk it. ⚠️ The cable car queue is long during National Day; it's a 20-min walk up the mountain, so there's no need to wait. 🍜 After leaving the scenic area, go to Dangtu County to eat pork noodle soup for CNY 12 a bowl, which is better than the CNY 30 boxed lunch inside the scenic area. Half a day for Caishiji and the Li Bai Cultural Park is enough; in the afternoon, head back to the city to visit Yushan Lake, which is free. Ma'anshan is 17 mins from Nanjing by high-speed rail, making it perfect for a side trip from Nanjing, and accommodation is half the price of Nanjing. 8️⃣ Harbin | Heilongjiang Harbin doesn't have ice and snow during National Day, but the autumn colors at Volga Manor are in full swing; the admission ticket plus the direct bus is CNY 150 when bought online. 📍 Take the direct bus from Central Street, which takes 1 hour; if driving, take Changjiang Road. ⏰ It's less crowded in the morning, and the reflection of Petrov Palace looks like an oil painting. The exterior of St. Sophia Cathedral is free, and it's CNY 20 to go inside. ⚠️ Pigeon food in the square is CNY 10 a bag; don't get pestered into buying it. The Ice and Snow World doesn't open until December; going during National Day just means looking at an empty lot, so don't waste your time. 🍜 A Modern popsicle on Central Street is CNY 5; the queue for the Huamei Western Restaurant is too long, so turn into a side street and have Russian-style BBQ for about CNY 50 per person. For accommodation in Harbin, choose the Daoli District; homestays converted from old houses are just over CNY 100. It's below 10 degrees in the morning and evening in October, so bring a light down jacket and a scarf. Walking along the Songhua River is nice, and the free area of Sun Island is enough to explore for half a day. Of these eight places, Weinan and Garzê are the most physically demanding, while Wuhan and Harbin are the most relaxing. Where do you plan to go, or do you have even more budget-friendly ways to play? Drop them in the comments section.

For buying souvenirs like dried tofu or lamb jelly, or for extra meals.

After retiring, your time is finally your own. But honestly, many attractions aren't very knee-friendly. I've handpicked these 8 places—they have flat roads, few slopes, and a slow pace, so it won't be too strenuous even in your 60s. 01 Qingyuan | Guangdong Lianzhou Underground River is the highlight of this trip. The entire cave tour is by boat, so you don't have to climb stairs. You can sit and watch the stalactites hanging overhead. It gets chilly, so bring a light jacket if you visit in the summer. ⏰ I recommend arriving before 9:00 AM to avoid crowds and long lines for the boat. The ground inside the cave is damp, so wear non-slip, soft-soled shoes; avoid sandals. 📍 There is a flat path from the entrance of the Lianzhou Underground River Scenic Area to the pier, which takes about 10 minutes to walk at a leisurely pace. If you have limited mobility, you can ask about wheelchair access at the visitor center, and the staff will guide you. 🍜 After leaving the cave, head to downtown Lianzhou to try Dongbei cured meat and Lianzhou vegetable hearts. The flavor is salty and savory, which pairs perfectly with white porridge. Avoid the restaurants right at the scenic area entrance; they are overpriced and average in taste. ⚠️ Do not use the flash when taking photos inside the cave, as the high humidity makes lenses prone to fogging. Admission and boat ticket prices are subject to the official daily announcement. Book online one day in advance during peak season. 02 Baiyin | Gansu I initially thought the Yellow River Stone Forest was just a gimmick, but I was convinced once I arrived. Stone pillars stand in rows on the river beach, and when the wind blows, the sand rustles against your pant legs. There are sightseeing carts and donkey carts in the scenic area. Seniors, don't push yourselves; the distance from the entrance to the core viewing area is quite long. 🚄 It is about a 1.5-hour drive from downtown Baiyin. I recommend chartering a car or joining a one-day tour, as public transportation can be a hassle. ⏰ The light hits at an angle after 4:00 PM, making the stone forest look its best. The sun is harsh at noon, so be sure to bring a hat and sunglasses. 📍 The viewing platform area has railings and an expansive view, making it a great place to sit, rest, and take in the panorama. You can negotiate the price for the donkey cart ride; ask for the round-trip price before getting on. ⚠️ It is windy, so don't wear a lightweight sun hat, as it can easily blow away. There are few dining options inside the scenic area, so bring your own water and snacks. 03 Ma'anshan | Anhui Caishiji is right next to the Yangtze River, and the boardwalks are flat and easy to walk on. When the river breeze blows, all your worries just drift away. Taibai Pavilion is inside the scenic area; it is not very tall, so it is fine to climb slowly. 📍 It is about a 20-minute taxi ride from Ma'anshan East Station, and the roads are easy to navigate. ⏰ It is most comfortable to visit in the evening when the river surface glitters with gold, and you won't need filters for your photos. There are many mosquitoes in the summer, so wear long pants and bring insect repellent. 🍜 In the city, try Dangtu braised pork noodles and Caishiji dried tofu. The noodle broth is rich, and the dried tofu is chewy—it makes a great snack to take with you. Just browse the souvenir shops in the scenic area; don't make impulse purchases. ⚠️ The boardwalks by the river can be slippery after rain, so wear shoes with good grip. Admission policies are subject to the official daily announcement; there are often discounts for local seniors. 04 Putian | Fujian To visit the Mazu Cultural Tourism Zone on Meizhou Island, you take a ferry. The boat is stable, and the ride only takes about 10 minutes, so it shouldn't be a problem for those prone to seasickness. There is an electric shuttle bus loop on the island. Seniors can buy a ticket and hop on and off as they please, saving unnecessary walking. 📍 The shuttle stop is on the right side after you exit the ferry terminal. ⏰ It is crowded around the 23rd day of the third lunar month (lunar calendar), but it is quiet at other times. Arrive on the island in the morning and head back before 3:00 PM to avoid the return rush. 🍜 Try Mazu noodles and oyster omelet on the island. The seafood is fresh, but prices vary by season. Ask for the unit price before ordering, and don't be shy about it. ⚠️ Ferry schedules are affected by weather, so check the daily schedule before you depart. Accommodation on the island is average; if you want to stay overnight, book a place near the ferry terminal for convenience. 05 Zaozhuang | Shandong Taierzhuang Ancient Town is worth an overnight stay. You can see the water lanes during the day, and at night, when the lights turn on, the whole town looks like it is bathed in light. The town is paved with stone slabs—it is flat, but your feet will get tired after walking for a long time. 📍 I recommend entering from the East Gate and walking along the main street. Don't try to see everything; just pick two or three alleys to wander through slowly. ⏰ Enter the ancient town after 5:00 PM. The rules for daytime tickets and night tour tickets are different, so ask clearly before buying. Prices are subject to the official daily announcement. 🍜 Try the vegetable pancakes and spicy chicken in the town. The spicy chicken comes in large portions, so if there are two of you, order a small portion. Just look at the sugar paintings at the street stalls; don't buy too many. ⚠️ It is packed during holidays, and seniors can easily get bumped into. Avoid weekends and holidays; the experience is much better on weekdays. 06 Yinchuan | Ningxia Yinchuan's attractions are scattered, so I recommend splitting them over 2 days. Mingcui Lake Wetland Park has flat paths, making it suitable for a morning walk. There are many birds in the reed marshes, so bring binoculars. You should see the Helan Mountain Rock Art, but don't climb to the high-altitude spots. 📍 The rock art is concentrated in the gully area, and you can see it after walking just a few steps without having to climb the mountain. Lingwu Shuidonggou has canyons and hidden military caves with many stairs. If you have limited mobility, take the sightseeing cart to the core area and know your limits. The Western Xia Imperial Tombs are expansive and windy. ⏰ Visit in the afternoon when the light is soft; the earthy-yellow tomb mounds look very atmospheric in the sunset. 🚄 I recommend chartering a car or driving yourself to the various attractions from downtown Yinchuan, as public transportation is time-consuming. 🍜 In the city, try hand-grabbed mutton and lamb offal soup, paired with eight-treasure tea to cut the greasiness. ⚠️ The Northwest is dry, so bring plenty of water. The attractions are far apart, so don't cram too much into one day. 07 Dalian | Liaoning Dalian's seaside is senior-friendly. The beach at Golden Pebble Beach National Tourist Resort is flat; take off your shoes and walk around—the seawater feels cool and refreshing. Laohutan Ocean Park has performances, and you can just sit and watch without having to stand in crowds. 📍 Xinghai Square is large; rent an electric scooter to ride around it to save your legs. Tangli Lake Park is quiet and a favorite among local seniors. There are benches by the lake where you can sit for the whole afternoon. ⏰ Summer is the best time to visit, but avoid the scorching midday sun; the seaside is comfortable in the morning and evening. 🚄 Subway and bus transportation within the city are convenient, and taxis are not expensive. 🍜 Try Menzi (a local starch dish) and seafood barbecue. Seafood is sold by weight, so ask for the price before ordering. ⚠️ It is windy by the sea, so bring a jacket. Stay away from the reef areas, as they are slippery. 08 Alxa League | Inner Mongolia Visit the Populus Euphratica Forest Tourist Area in October. If you go too early, the leaves haven't turned yellow; if you go too late, the wind will have blown them all away. The golden Populus trees reflected in the water—that scene is worth the trip. You can see sand dunes and lakes in the Badain Jaran Desert, but desert activities are not senior-friendly. 📍 Riding an off-road vehicle into the desert is very bumpy. If you have back problems, be cautious; you can just look around the edges. ⏰ The best viewing period for the Populus Euphratica Forest is mid-October; check the official announcement for that year for specific dates. 🍜 Eat mutton and camel meat locally. The flavors are strong, so eat less if you have a sensitive stomach. Book accommodation in advance, as prices double during peak season. ⚠️ The temperature difference between day and night is large, and it is cold in the morning and evening, so bring a thick jacket. Cell signal is poor in the desert, so don't go off on your own. Of these 8 places, I highly recommend Qingyuan and Dalian—one is cool inside a cave, the other has flat beaches. Which one have you been to? Let's chat in the comments.

People always ask me what to do when they want to get away but their wallets are a bit light. This time, I’ve selected eight cities with completely different personalities—from southern canyons to northwestern ancient towns, from seaside earthen buildings to highland meadows—all with a budget of around 1,000 yuan per person, yet still offering a "great value" experience. I’ve personally scouted every city, so I know what’s worth paying for and what’s a waste of time. Just follow my lead; no need to overthink it. 01 Baise | Guangxi Head straight to Haokun Lake for your first stop in Baise. Don't linger at the entrance; take a boat straight to the center of the lake. ⏰ The water is calmest before 9:00 AM. The mountain reflections look like an undried ink wash painting, and the boatman will turn off the motor so you can hear the birds. For lunch, head ashore for some farm-style food by the lake—boiled chicken with pickled bamboo shoots—for about 40 yuan per person. In the afternoon, head to Tongling Grand Canyon. The hiking route takes about 1.5 hours. The boardwalks are slippery, so wear non-slip shoes. For the big waterfall at the bottom of the canyon, the mist will hit you, so remember to put a waterproof bag on your camera. ⚠️ Don't linger too long at the bottom of the canyon; the mist gets heavier in the afternoon, and your photos will just be a white blur. On the way back to the city, stop by Chengbi Lake. The lake glitters in the evening, and locals walk along the dam, creating a relaxed atmosphere. 02 Zhangzhou | Fujian For Yunshuiyao and the Nanjing Tulou, I suggest visiting the Tulou first and then Yunshuiyao to avoid aesthetic fatigue. The "Four Dishes and One Soup" at Tianluokeng in Nanjing Tulou is a classic photo spot. 📍 The viewing platform is across the road; it's backlit in the afternoon, so morning light is better for clear photos. People still live inside the Tulou, so don't wander into private areas; just stick to the public spaces. Yunshuiyao Ancient Town is better in the evening. The old banyan trees by the stream provide shade, and sitting on a stone bench when you're tired, listening to the water, is very relaxing. 🍜 The grass jelly with honey at the entrance of the town is 5 yuan a bowl, which is a better deal than the 10-yuan ones inside the scenic area. The Coastal Volcanic National Geopark is worth adding as a side trip for a day. The black columnar joint coastline is rare in China, but it's windy, so bring an extra jacket. 03 Shangrao | Jiangxi The way to play Shangrao is a "mountain + village" combo. If you have the energy, do Sanqingshan plus Huangling; if you're short on time, pick one. I recommend staying at the foot of Sanqingshan. Take the cable car up at 6:00 AM to finish the West Coast boardwalk before the tour groups arrive; the chances of seeing a sea of clouds are high. ⚠️ There are few supply points on the mountain, so bring your own water and snacks; they cost double at the bottom. Huangling's "autumn harvest display" is a seasonal autumn exclusive, but the ancient village has a great vibe on regular days too. 📍 The photography spot at the end of Tianjie Street captures the entire patchwork of rooftops; the light is softest after 4:00 PM. Wuyuan Jiangwan and Guifeng are better as side trips. Jiangwan is for Hui-style architecture, while Guifeng features Danxia landforms. The climb is less intense than Sanqingshan, making it a safer bet if you're traveling with elderly people or children. 04 Ma'anshan | Anhui I made a special trip to Ma'anshan for Caishiji, and honestly, it exceeded my expectations. This scenic area blends the Yangtze River, cliffs, ancient temples, and Li Bai culture all together. ⏰ Enter the park at 2:00 PM, climb Cuiluo Mountain to Santai Pavilion first—the river breeze hits you, and you can see the bend in the Yangtze. After coming down the mountain, walk along the riverside boardwalk to Taibai Pavilion. The old ginkgo tree in front of the pavilion turns golden in autumn. ⚠️ The park stops admitting visitors at 5:00 PM, so don't cut it too close. The whole tour takes about 3 hours; wear comfortable sneakers as there are quite a few steps on the mountain paths. 🍜 After coming down, go to the city for Dangtu braised pork noodles. The noodles are chewy, the braised pork is rich but not greasy, and a 15-yuan bowl is very filling. 05 Chengde | Hebei I advise splitting the Mountain Resort and Jinshanling Great Wall into two days—one per day—so your legs can handle it. The resort is huge, so don't try to see it all. Focus on the lake area and the plain area, and take the mountain shuttle to the mountainous area for a panoramic view. ⏰ Enter the park in the morning when it's less crowded, and you can hear the birds. ⚠️ There is a fixed route for visiting the palace area; don't go against the flow, or staff will likely stop you. Jinshanling Great Wall is much wilder than Badaling, with uneven steps, but there are fewer tourists, so you can take photos freely. 📍 The section west of Zhuanduoguan has a high density of watchtowers, and the backlit silhouette at dusk is especially beautiful. If your stamina is average, walk to the General's Tower and turn back; the round trip is about 2.5 hours. The stir-fried wild vegetables with farm eggs at the foot of the Great Wall are incredibly fresh. 06 Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture | Sichuan Garzê covers a large area, so don't be greedy and try to do it all at once. It's more relaxed to visit Daocheng Yading and Hailuogou separately. Yading is a hiker's paradise. 📍 The section from Luorong Pasture to Milk Lake has a rapid elevation gain. ⏰ Start before 8:00 AM; the weather is likely to change after noon, and it often rains in the afternoon. ⚠️ Oxygen canisters and glucose are must-haves; don't push yourself. Hailuogou is better for those who want to see glaciers without too much exertion. Take the cable car to Camp No. 4, and the glacier tongue is right at your feet. When the weather is good, you can see the Gongga Snow Mountain. Xinduqiao is a photographer's paradise; the poplar forests are golden in autumn, and every shot is wallpaper-worthy. The surface of Mugecuo Lake is vast, and the boardwalk around the lake is flat, making it suitable for walking with parents. The temperature difference between day and night in high-altitude areas is large, so bring down jackets regardless of the season. 07 Kashgar Prefecture | Xinjiang Kashgar Old Town is the kind of place that lets you slow down. ⏰ Don't miss the opening ceremony at 10:00 AM. After watching it, enter from the East Gate and stroll along the main street to the Century-Old Tea House. 📍 The window seats on the second floor of the tea house have the best view. Order a pot of rose tea with a baked bun, and you can sit there all morning. The alleys of the old town are a maze; don't be afraid of getting lost—every alley leads to a different surprise. In the afternoon, head to the Pamir Plateau. Baisha Lake and Karakul Lake are worth a stop. Mount Muztagh is reflected in the lake, and the wind carries the chill of the snow-capped mountains. ⚠️ Altitude sickness is milder here than in Garzê, but still, don't run or jump. The Stone City ruins are right next to Taxkorgan County, and the crumbling walls have a great sense of history in the sunset. You must try the roast pigeon at the Kashgar night market; the skin is crispy, and the meat is so tender it's juicy. 08 Taizhou | Jiangsu Taizhou is the most leisurely stop among these eight cities. Qin Lake Wetland Park is perfect for a slow stroll. ⏰ In the morning, take a sculling boat through the reed marshes. The boatwoman will sing local folk songs, and water birds will skim past the boat. For lunch, eat fish balls and fish cakes in Qintong Ancient Town; the texture is bouncy, and the soup is so fresh it'll make your eyebrows dance. ⚠️ The deer island and elk viewing area in Qin Lake close at 4:00 PM, so go there first and then come back for the boat ride; the route is smoother. 🍜 In the evening, go back to the city for morning tea. Taizhou's morning tea is no worse than Yangzhou's. Dried tofu strips with crab roe soup dumplings—you can eat until you're stuffed for 30 yuan per person. The pace of the whole city is slow, making it perfect for taking it easy for two days when you're tired of walking. After visiting all eight cities, the ones I most want to return to are Kashgar and Baise. Kashgar's exotic charm and vibrant daily life are all in the alleys, while Baise's landscapes are affordable and magnificent. Do you have a plan in mind? Let me know in the comments which city you want to set off for, and I'll help you refine your route.

Want to avoid the crowds this National Day? Here are 8 low-cost, hidden gems personally tested and highly recommended. 01 Heyuan | Guangdong Heyuan during the National Day holiday is much quieter than the popular spots in the Pearl River Delta. My reason for choosing it is simple: a breeze at Wanlv Lake, and you'll feel completely relaxed. ⏰ Arrive at Wanlv Lake before 10:00 AM. The water is clearest before the tour boats stir it up. Choose the short boat route; the long route is expensive and the scenery is repetitive. ⚠️ Don't rush to buy the "wild dried fish" by the lake. The prices are inflated; they're half the price at the city's wet markets. 🚄 It takes about 40 mins by high-speed train from Shenzhen North to Heyuan East. A taxi to the lake from the station costs around CNY 20. It's great for traveling with seniors—the paths are flat and easy to walk. 🍜 For lunch, head back to the city for pork trotter rice noodles. Look for an old shop near Taiping Street in the old town. A bowl costs around CNY 10–20, with rich broth and smooth noodles. Spend the afternoon at Sujiawei. It's a small ancient village that you can explore in an hour. 02 Wanning | Hainan Sanya is crowded, Wanning is relaxed. That's my honest assessment of Hainan. Shimei Bay and Riyue Bay—one is for lounging and daydreaming, the other for surfing. Riyue Bay is great for young people. A surfing lesson costs around CNY 200, and the instructor will have you practice on the shore first. ⚠️ Don't trust the roadside solicitors promising you'll "learn in one lesson." It's safer to choose a club with a physical storefront. Shimei Bay has fine sand and clear water. ⏰ After 5:00 PM, the light is soft, perfect for photos without filters. 📍 It's about a 20-min drive from Shimei Bay to Riyue Bay, costing around CNY 30+ by taxi. 🍜 For food, the Nanyang-style cuisine in Xinglong is worth the trip. Curry beef brisket with coconut rice will fill you up for about CNY 50 per person. Hainan is still hot in October, so don't skimp on sunscreen. 03 Sanming | Fujian Sanming is a truly off-the-beaten-path destination for the National Day holiday. Dajin Lake and Taining Ancient Town—one for the water, one for the architecture—have just the right pace. A boat tour is the main way to see Dajin Lake. ⏰ The first boat at 8:30 AM is the least crowded. The Danxia landforms against the clear water look even better than in photos. ⚠️ They will try to sell you local specialties on the boat; just take a look, don't make impulsive purchases. 📍 Taining Ancient Town is right in the county seat. The Shangshu Mansion is worth entering, and the admission ticket isn't expensive. Walking through the ancient town after the lights come on at night is more atmospheric than during the day. 🚄 There are high-speed trains from Sanming North Station to Taining, taking about 20+ mins. It's perfect for a two-day, one-night trip at a relaxed pace. 🍜 Local Nuangu buns and Biyu rolls can be found at breakfast stalls for just a few yuan each. 04 Changsha | Hunan Changsha is crowded during the National Day holiday, but I know how to avoid the crowds. Tianxin Pavilion, Yuelu Mountain, the Provincial Museum, and Huaminglou—these four make for a perfect day-and-a-half itinerary. ⚠️ You must book the Provincial Museum in advance; you basically can't get a ticket on the day of. It's closed on Mondays, so don't make a wasted trip. 📍 A taxi from Tianxin Pavilion to Yuelu Mountain costs around CNY 20+. I recommend entering Yuelu Mountain from the East Gate and exiting from the South Gate to grab snacks in the University Town along the way. ⏰ Head up Yuelu Mountain before 7:00 AM; it's less crowded and cooler. The red leaves around Aiwanting Pavilion aren't fully red in October, so don't get your hopes up too high. Huaminglou is in Ningxiang, far from the city center, so it's best suited for a self-driving trip or a chartered car. 🍜 You won't go wrong with food in Changsha: find rice noodles in the alleys, choose a stinky tofu stand with a line, and you can eat well for CNY 30–40 per person. 05 Mianyang | Sichuan Mianyang is a transit stop for Jiuzhaigou, but the Beichuan Qiang City Tourist Area is worth setting aside half a day for. It's not crowded and has a quiet atmosphere. 📍 The Beichuan Qiang City includes the earthquake ruins and the new county town. I recommend visiting the ruins first, then the new town. ⏰ Go in the morning; the lighting and mood are more appropriate. ⚠️ Please keep quiet in the ruins area. Don't talk or laugh loudly, and don't pose for photos in front of the ruins—it's a matter of basic respect. 🚄 It's about a 40-min taxi ride from Mianyang Station. It's a good place to teach children about life, but I don't recommend bringing very young children. 🍜 Head back to the city for Mianyang rice noodles. Both clear broth and spicy broth are good, and a bowl costs CNY 8. 06 Lhasa | Tibet Lhasa isn't the most crowded place during the National Day holiday, but you have to scramble for tickets to the Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple. Namtso Lake is far, so you'll need to set aside a full day. ⚠️ You must book Potala Palace tickets in advance. They are hard to get during peak season, so don't trust scalpers. ⏰ Follow the pilgrims around Jokhang Temple in the morning; it feels more authentic than in the afternoon. 📍 When strolling through Barkhor Street, walk clockwise and don't go against the flow. Sit in a sweet tea house; a pot costs just a few yuan and can help you while away the afternoon. Namtso Lake is at a high altitude. 🚄 It takes about 6 hours round-trip by chartered car from Lhasa, and you'll pass the Nagenla Pass on the way. Those prone to altitude sickness should be cautious. It's windy by the lake in October, so bring a down jacket. 🍜 Tibetan noodles and sweet tea are daily staples. Don't eat yak meat for every meal, or your stomach will get tired. 07 Qinhuangdao | Hebei Qinhuangdao is more comfortable during the National Day holiday than at the end of the peak season in Beidaihe. It's half as crowded and prices have dropped. Beidaihe and Shanhaiguan—one by the sea, one by the pass. ⏰ For sunrise in Beidaihe, Pigeon Nest Park is the classic spot. Arrive by 5:30 AM to grab a spot. It's chilly in the early morning in October, so don't forget a jacket. ⚠️ Ask for the price before getting on speedboats and jet skis by the sea; they are prone to overcharging. 📍 In the ancient town of Shanhaiguan, the First Pass under Heaven tower is worth climbing. The admission ticket isn't cheap, but it's worth it once. Just take a look at the souvenirs on the ancient town's commercial street. 🚄 Both Beidaihe Station and Shanhaiguan Station have high-speed trains, and the trip between the two stations takes about 10+ mins by train. It's suitable for a short trip around the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. 🍜 Sitiao Baozi is a local time-honored brand. There's a line, but they serve quickly. 08 Ma'anshan | Anhui Ma'anshan is next to Nanjing, but has far fewer tourists. The Yangtze River Caishiji Cultural and Ecological Tourist Area was the most unexpected highlight of this trip. 📍 Caishiji is by the Yangtze River, and both Taibai Pavilion and Sanyuan Cave are inside. ⏰ Go after 3:00 PM for good lighting on the river. You can watch the sunset if you walk to the end of the boardwalk. ⚠️ There are many steps in some parts of the scenic area, so wear comfortable shoes and have seniors walk slowly. The admission ticket isn't expensive, and there are discounts for students. 🚄 It's about a 20-min taxi ride from Ma'anshan East Station. It's suitable for a half-day trip and can be combined with a Nanjing itinerary. 🍜 Dangtu big meat noodles are a local specialty. A bowl costs around CNY 10–20 at noodle shops, and they are generous with the meat. Take a walk by the river after eating, and it makes for a perfect day. Of these eight places, I most recommend Heyuan and Taining—they are less crowded, cost less, and are stress-free. Where are you planning to go for the National Day holiday? Let's chat in the comments.

Spontaneous getaways made easy: 8 destinations accessible by high-speed rail 1️⃣ Fuzhou | Fujian Sanfang Qixiang isn't just one street. It's a network of old, fishbone-shaped alleys. The main street, Nanhou Street, is crowded, but turn into the adjacent Langguan Alley or Ta Alley, and it immediately gets quiet. White walls and dark tiles paired with banyan tree roots make for great photos. ⏰ Arrive before 9:00 AM for soft light, fewer tourists, and to catch the tail end of the local morning market. 📍 Try the meat swallows (rouyan) at Tongli in the middle of Nanhou Street. The wrappers are hand-pounded, making them crispy and springy. A bowl of swallow thread soup is the perfect snack. ⚠️ Don't buy souvenirs on the main street. Walk a bit into Ta Alley, and the same jasmine tea is 30% cheaper. The alleys are great for a slow stroll, but they can be tricky with a stroller due to the uneven stone paths. 2️⃣ Pingliang | Gansu You can hike Kongtong Mountain without the cable car, but think it through. The front mountain trail is steep with narrow stone steps. It takes about 2 hours to reach the middle terrace. If you have bad knees, just buy a cable car ticket. 🚄 It takes about 40 minutes by taxi from Pingliang Station to Kongtong Mountain Ancient Town. Don't trust the "chartered day tour" touts at the entrance. ⏰ Head up after 3:00 PM to go against the flow of tour groups. The light hits the Danxia rock walls at an angle, showing the best colors. 📍 The Taoist temple complex at the middle terrace is worth a stop, but don't feel the need to enter every hall. Just pick 2 or 3 to admire the architecture. ⚠️ There are few supply points on the mountain, so bring enough water. Beef noodles in the ancient town are more expensive than in the city; it's more cost-effective to eat after you come down. Autumn is the best time to visit, with yellow leaves covering the mountains and the temple eaves. 3️⃣ Ningbo | Zhejiang Tianyi Pavilion and Yuehu Lake are right next to each other and can be visited in one morning. Tianyi Pavilion is a library with a small but exquisite garden. Yuehu Lake is more like a local backyard—it's free and great for wandering. 🚄 Take Metro Line 2 from Ningbo Station to Chenghuangmiao, then walk 10 minutes to Tianyi Pavilion. 📍 Sit at a teahouse by Yuehu Lake, order a cup of Wanghai tea, and watch the locals play chess. It's much more relaxing than rushing between attractions. Xikou and Tengtou are great for seniors and children. Tengtou Village has fruit picking and a small train, making for a slow pace. Qiantong Ancient Town requires a separate half-day; it's a 1.5-hour drive from downtown Ningbo. The town's "three treasures" are tofu, dried tofu, and hollow tofu. 🍜 Just try them for a taste; don't buy too much. ⚠️ Shops in Qiantong Ancient Town start closing after 5:00 PM, so don't go too late. You can buy a joint ticket for Xikou and Tengtou, but if you're only visiting one, buying a single ticket is more cost-effective. 4️⃣ Altay | Xinjiang Kanas and Keketuohai are in different directions; don't try to do both in one day. 🚄 There is no direct high-speed rail to Northern Xinjiang. Usually, you fly to Altay or take a train to Beitun and then charter a car. Stay inside the Kanas scenic area; watching the morning mist rise from the lake is worth the room rate. ⏰ From late September to early October, the birch forests turn completely yellow, contrasting with the snow-capped mountains and clear water—the colors are as rich as an oil painting. 📍 It takes 40 minutes to hike up to the Hemu Village viewing platform. At sunset, the whole village is filled with cooking smoke—it's better than the sunrise. Keketuohai has a different vibe, with granite peaks and the Irtysh River. In autumn, the river water turns a blue-green color. For the cultural side of the Altay grasslands, visit a herdsman's home for a bowl of milk tea. Don't rush to take photos; sit down and chat first. ⚠️ Snow scenery in Northern Xinjiang arrives after November. Roads get icy, so if you're driving, switch to snow tires. Dining in the scenic area is expensive with few options, so bring some naan and fruit. 5️⃣ Jinan | Shandong The "Number One Spring under Heaven" is Baotu Spring. Three spring eyes bubble up, and the water is so clear you can see the koi. ⏰ Enter as soon as it opens at 7:00 AM before the tour groups arrive, so you can quietly listen to the sound of the springs. 📍 Exit the east gate of Baotu Spring, cross the street to Quancheng Square, and head north to Black Tiger Spring. There are free water collection points by Black Tiger Spring where locals bring buckets to fetch water. You can also fill a cup to taste. Go to Thousand Buddha Mountain in the afternoon. Hike to the top for a panoramic view of Jinan, and watch the city get covered in a warm glow at sunset. ⚠️ There is an extra fee for the Ten Thousand Buddha Cave at Thousand Buddha Mountain. It's a collection of statues; you can skip it if you're not interested. 🍜 For lunch, find a bazi meat shop. Rice topped with meat broth and a fried egg is simple but satisfying. Jinan's attractions are concentrated, so public transport and walking are enough—no need to take taxis. 6️⃣ Ma'anshan | Anhui Caishiji is by the Yangtze River. The highlights are Taibai Pavilion and Sanyuan Cave. 🚄 It's about a 20-minute taxi ride from Ma'anshan East Station. You can take a bus, but the wait is long. ⏰ It's best to go in the evening. The sunset over the river with cargo ships passing by slowly has more character than during the day. 📍 Sanyuan Cave is a natural stone cave. On the side facing the river, you can see the water hitting the shore, but the steps are slippery, so wear non-slip shoes. ⚠️ The cable car and slide in the scenic area cost extra. The mountain isn't high—it's a 30-minute walk up—so there's no need to take them. Li Bai's tomb is in Dangtu, which is some distance from Caishiji, so don't confuse them. It's suitable for people who like to quietly watch the river; bring a book and sit by the river to daydream. 🍜 Find a Dangtu meat noodle shop in the city. The noodles are chewy, and the meat is stewed until tender. 7️⃣ Sanya | Hainan Daxiaodongtian and Tianya Haijiao are both coastal rock attractions; just pick one. Daxiaodongtian is quieter, with coconut groves and a lighthouse. Tianya Haijiao is more famous, but it's just two rocks, and the ticket isn't cheap—weigh it yourself. Wuzhizhou Island has the best water quality. 🚄 Take a bus from downtown Sanya to the pier and then transfer to a boat. It's recommended to take the first boat to the island in the morning and leave before 3:00 PM to avoid the return rush. Diving and jet skiing on the island are not cheap; book online in advance if you want to play. Yalong Bay has fine sand, perfect for kids to dig in. ⏰ It's not too sunny to go into the water after 5:00 PM, but be sure to get out before 7:00 PM as it gets dark quickly. ⚠️ Use an app for taxis in Sanya; don't take cars soliciting passengers on the side of the road. For seafood, buy it at the First Market and then find a restaurant to cook it. Watch the scale when they weigh it. 8️⃣ Shanghai The Expo Park area is now called the Expo Culture Park. It's free, spacious, and great for cycling or walking. 📍 Shenyuan Garden is a Jiangnan-style garden inside. It requires a reservation, but it's worth entering when it's not crowded. Yu Garden belongs to tourists during the day. Go in before 9:00 AM when the Nine-Turn Bridge is empty, and you can get photos without people. 🍜 The line at Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant is too long; it's more practical to turn into the side alleys for a bowl of small wontons. Guangfulin Cultural Relics is in Songjiang. The underwater museum part is quite unique. 🚄 Take Metro Line 9 to Songjiang University Town and transfer to a bus. No need to say much about Disney. ⚠️ The Early Entry Pass is more cost-effective than the Premier Access, but you have to be able to get to the gate by 6:30 AM to line up. Shanghai is a good place to wrap up your trip. You can get anywhere by high-speed rail, and you can control your own pace. Of these eight places, Fuzhou and Ningbo are suitable for weekends, Altay requires enough time, and Sanya depends on your budget. Pick one, buy your ticket, and go.

Traveling in September and October, flight and hotel prices start to drop, and it's not as crazy as the summer vacation. Pick the right place, and you won't break the bank, while still getting a great experience. I've ranked these eight based on my own trial-and-error experience, and I'll be straightforward about the pros and cons. 1️⃣ Shanghai Don't shake your head at Shanghai saying it's expensive. From late September, flight and hostel prices drop significantly. To save money, skip full-price Disney tickets and choose weekday evening sessions. ⏰ Enter after 4:00 PM, and your queue time will be cut in half, with the fireworks still visible. In the city, arrive at Yu Garden before 8:30 AM, and Jiuqu Bridge will be almost empty; grab a basket of Nanxiang steamed buns for breakfast while you're there. The Expo Park area has been converted into a riverside walkway—it's free, and biking while feeling the river breeze is more comfortable than wandering through malls. Guangfulin Relics is in Songjiang, and the underwater museum section is very photogenic. ⚠️ It's closed on Mondays, so don't waste a trip. The subway ride takes over an hour, so I recommend combining it with a visit to Thames Town. 🚄 A 3-day subway pass is more cost-effective than single tickets. Stay in a hostel near People's Square, which you can get for around 100+ per night. This is perfect for students and first-timers who don't want to overspend. 2️⃣ Weihai | Shandong In September, the water in Weihai is still warm, but most of the crowds have already left. The sunrise at Chengshantou is truly stunning, but ⚠️ the cable car in the scenic area isn't great value; walking the boardwalk actually gets you closer to the sea. Take the boat to Liugong Island—the boat ticket is included in the admission fee. I recommend going in the morning, as the afternoon wind can easily cause service suspensions. The old buildings on the island are worth a slow look, so don't just focus on taking photos. Huaxia City is great for traveling with seniors; the slopes are gentle, and show times are fixed, so ⏰ check the schedule before you enter. 🍜 Downtown, you can get your fill of mackerel dumplings and seafood soup for about 40 per person. 🚄 A taxi from Weihai Station to the beach is about 20. In September, sea-view homestays are nearly half the price of July and August. This is perfect for couples who want a quiet sea view on a limited budget. 3️⃣ Dalian | Dalian The coastline at Jinshitan is better than downtown, but avoid the weekends. ⏰ Choose a weekday morning, and the Golden Coast will be almost all yours. Light Rail Line 3 goes directly there, which is half the price of a taxi. Tiger Beach Ocean Park tickets aren't cheap, and ⚠️ there are separate queues for the performance halls inside, so if you're short on time, just pick the Polar Hall. Tangli Lake Park is free—it's where locals go for a stroll, and the reeds in autumn are quite beautiful. Go to Xinghai Square in the evening to feed the seagulls and watch the bridge lights. 🍜 Nearby small shops serve menzi and seaweed buns; 20 gets it done. This is suitable for families or solo travelers looking to zone out. Stay near Qingniwa Bridge for convenient transport; it's easy to get anywhere from there. 4️⃣ Beihai | Guangxi September in Beihai is still hot, but more comfortable than July and August. Weizhou Island boat tickets must be booked in advance; ⚠️ buying them on the day during peak season is basically impossible. The island entry fee plus the round-trip boat ticket is 300+, so don't trust the touts at the pier. Renting an electric scooter on the island is 50 per day, which offers more freedom than taking the sightseeing bus. Watch the sunrise at Colorful Beach and the sunset at Dishui Danping; ⏰ leave an evening and a morning for each. Beihai Silver Beach is free and has fine sand, but ⚠️ don't order seafood at the beachside stalls, as the prices double. Head toward Qiaogang Town, where the sweet soup and rice rolls are cheap and authentic. 🍜 You can get full on crab powder noodles and shrimp cakes in Qiaogang for 10. This is perfect for those who want to dive, see the sea, and are on a tight budget. 5️⃣ Jilin By late September in Jilin City, Songhua Lake starts to change color, with layers of forest turning vibrant. Taking a boat tour of the lake is less tiring than driving around it, and ⏰ it's most beautiful in the morning when the mist clears. Wusong Island only has rime in winter; if you go in September, you're there for the river mist and rice paddies, so don't get your expectations wrong. Stay in a Hanok village homestay for 100+ a night, with the river right outside your door. 🚄 There's a shuttle bus from Jilin Station to Songhua Lake, so don't take a taxi—it's expensive. This is perfect for those who like quiet and want to scout the area before returning in winter. 6️⃣ Chifeng | Inner Mongolia At Hashhatu Stone Forest, the grass turns yellow in September, and the stones look golden in the sunset. ⏰ The light is best after 4:00 PM; going at noon is hot and the light is flat. The scenic area is large, so I recommend self-driving or chartering a car. ⚠️ Public transport is rare, so don't rely on buses. The ticket plus sightseeing car is 100+, and you should bring enough water and food, as there's nothing to eat inside. This is perfect for photography enthusiasts and road trippers. Stay in Jingpeng Town; the conditions are basic, but it's cheap—just tens of yuan a night. 7️⃣ Nantong | Jiangsu The Hao River is the moat of Nantong; walking the 5km loop is free. ⏰ Go in the evening when the lights come on; the reflections of the bridges and towers in the water are better than in the daytime. Take a night cruise to see the scenery; tickets are just tens of yuan, which is more reasonable than in many other cities. 🍜 The crab roe soup dumplings and fried dumplings in the nearby old streets are things locals have eaten since childhood. This is perfect for a slow stroll with parents; the pace is relaxed and not tiring. A taxi from Nantong Station to the Hao River is 10+, and riverside hotels are budget-friendly in September. 8️⃣ Ma'anshan | Anhui Caishiji on the Yangtze is where Li Bai once wrote poems. The river breeze in September is cool, so climbing the boardwalk isn't painful. ⏰ Go in the morning when there are fewer people and the mist on the river hasn't cleared yet; it has a bit of an ink-wash painting vibe. Tickets aren't expensive, and you can get half price with a student ID. ⚠️ The cable car in the scenic area is optional; you can reach the top in 20 minutes on foot. 🍜 Downtown, you can get a satisfying meal of Dangtu meat noodles and Caishiji tea dried tofu for 10+. This is perfect for a short weekend trip for budget travelers who want to soak up some literary vibes. These eight places are uncrowded and affordable in September and October. Stringing two or three together is much better value than squeezing into one popular city. Which one have you been to, or do you have cheaper recommendations? Let me know in the comments.

Stop staying home on weekends! 5 road trip routes that are less crowded, beautiful, and budget-friendly 01 Shiyan | Hubei I advise against arriving early at Wudang Mountain; you'll just run into all the tour groups with their little flags. ⏰ Head up from the Nanyan direction after 10:00 AM to cut the crowds in half. The wind blows through the fir trees in front of Zixiao Palace, carrying the scent of incense mixed with pine resin. For a road trip, just navigate to the Wudang Mountain Tourist Center. There's plenty of parking for ¥15 a day. 🚄 You can also take the high-speed train to Shiyan East Station and rent a car, but cars are in high demand on weekends, so book in advance. 📍 The road through Xiaoyao Valley is perfect for a slow drive with the creek right beside your wheels. Many people wade in the water during summer, so don't stop in the middle of the road. If you're bringing seniors, taking the cable car up and down is easiest on the knees. The steps at the Golden Summit are slippery when it rains, so don't push yourself. 🍜 Head down the mountain to Wudang Mountain Town for "sanhe" soup—sweet potato noodles with beef slices. A small bowl is ¥12, and you'll see locals squatting outside to eat it. ⚠️ Bottled water on the mountain costs ¥8. Carry two bottles up yourself to save some money. 02 Zhoushan | Zhejiang Visiting Putuo Mountain and Gouqi Island are two completely different experiences, so don't mix them up. Putuo Mountain is best visited by taking the first ferry in the morning when it's less crowded, allowing you to stand quietly in front of the Nanhai Guanyin statue. You need a full day for Gouqi Island. Book ferry tickets three days in advance via "Shengsi Passenger Transport"—they usually sell out instantly on weekends. 📍 Among the Shengsi Islands, renting an electric scooter on Sijiao Island is the most cost-effective option at ¥30 per hour. Riding along the coastal road, the sea breeze tastes salty and bitter, and your hair will get all matted. 🍜 For seafood noodles on Gouqi Island, just pick any place with dried fish hanging outside. A bowl is ¥25, and they are generous with the shrimp and clams. ⚠️ Admission and ferry tickets for Putuo Mountain cost over ¥200 per person. Vegetarian meals on the island are pricey, so bring some bread. It's suitable for couples and families with kids, but take motion sickness medicine half an hour before boarding, as the return ferry can be quite rocky. As for the season, the water is bluest from June to September; don't expect too much during other months when it looks gray. 03 Bayingolin | Xinjiang Bayanbulak and the Taklamakan Desert are in the north and south respectively, separated by hundreds of kilometers, so don't try to do both in one day. For the Nine-Bend-Eighteen-Turn of Bayanbulak, ⏰ the light is best after 7:00 PM when the sun presses against the edge of the grassland, making the river look like a glowing red wire. For a road trip, enter via the southern section of the Duku Highway. Fill up your tank, as gas stations are far apart. 📍 The Tarim Populus Euphratica Forest Park is most spectacular in October. It's just a gray forest during other months, so don't be fooled by photos online. 🍜 Eat pilaf in Bayanbulak Town—carrots and yellow carrots mixed with lamb. A serving is ¥35 and will keep you full. ⚠️ The Taklamakan Desert Highway has strict speed limits, so don't speed. Visibility can drop to less than 50 meters when sandstorms hit. It gets windy in the afternoon, so travel in the morning. For families with children, there are many mosquitoes in the Populus forest, so pack long sleeves and pants. The gas station in Tazhong is a supply point; stock up on water and snacks. 04 Hinggan League | Inner Mongolia I recommend visiting Arxan National Forest Park in the autumn. From late September to early October, the larch trees turn completely yellow, looking like someone splashed a bucket of paint over the mountain. You can go in the summer, but the mosquitoes might carry you away. It's about a four-hour drive from Ulanhot. 📍 Fill up your tank in Arxan city, as there are no gas stations in the park. ⏰ Go to Azalea Lake in the early morning. The mist clings to the water, and it's so quiet you can only hear your own footsteps on the wooden boardwalk. 🍜 Have lamb hot pot in the city. A plate of local lamb rolls is ¥40, half the price of what you'd pay in the scenic area. ⚠️ Admission plus the sightseeing bus costs over ¥200. You can't drive into the core area yourself; you have to transfer. It's suitable for seniors as the boardwalks are flat, and you can take the sightseeing bus if you get tired. The climb to Camel Peak Heaven Lake is a bit steep, so those with bad knees should know their limits. The winter snow scenery is beautiful, but the roads are slippery—don't enter the mountains without snow tires. 05 Xiamen | Fujian I recommend staying one night on Gulangyu Island instead of doing a day trip. ⏰ After 5:00 PM, tourists leave the island. The old villas on Longtou Road light up, cats squat on the walls, and the sea breeze sways the bougainvillea. Before 7:00 AM, you don't have to queue for Sunlight Rock. 📍 Enter the Railway Culture Park from the west gate of the Botanical Garden and walk along the old tracks. Take photos of the bougainvillea tunnel early; it's crowded after 9:00 AM. Nanputuo Temple vegetarian cakes are ¥15 a box, and the pumpkin filling is the best. 🍜 The vegetarian restaurant in the temple also serves good Arhat's Feast, but you need to get a number in advance. ⚠️ Book ferry tickets for Gulangyu in advance via "Xiamen Ferry." It's ¥35 round trip, and you can't buy tickets for the current ferry on-site. In the rainforest area of the Xiamen Botanical Garden, ⏰ the mist sprays from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, making it feel like stepping into The Wizard of Oz. It's great for couples and friends, but it's not stroller-friendly for those with kids due to many steps. It's too sunny in the summer; April and November are the most comfortable months. 06 Guangyuan | Sichuan For Jianmen Pass, don't just focus on taking photos of the gate tower. 📍 Enter from the South Gate, walk the plank road up to the gate tower, and then take the zipline down. The whole trip takes three hours and saves half the effort compared to entering from the North Gate. ⏰ Go in the morning; it's backlit in the afternoon, and photos of the gate tower will just be silhouettes. For a road trip, take the Jingkun Expressway and exit at Jianmen Pass. Parking is ¥10. 🚄 Take the high-speed train to Jianmen Pass Station, then it's a 15-minute taxi ride to the scenic area. 🍜 Try the tofu feast at the foot of the mountain—get an order of "pregnant" tofu and "collapsed mountain" tofu. It's ¥40 per person. Don't eat inside the scenic area; it's expensive and tastes bad. ⚠️ The Bird Path and Ape Path require extra fees. If you're afraid of heights, don't push yourself—your legs will really go weak. If you're with seniors, just walk the flat path from the gate tower to Shisun Peak; there are fewer steps. Autumn is the best time to go when the smoke trees are colorful. It rains a lot in the summer, making the plank roads slippery. 07 Meizhou | Guangdong Yannanfei Tea Garden is perfect for a leisurely half-day stay. ⏰ Arrive before 10:00 AM before the mist clears. The tea terraces are layered one after another, and the air is filled with the scent of roasted green tea. 📍 Take the trail behind the Weilong Hotel; it's less crowded than entering through the main gate. It's a 40-minute drive from Meizhou city, and parking is free. 🍜 The tea-infused chicken and Hakka stuffed tofu in the scenic area cost ¥40 per person and are just average. It's better to eat in Yanyang Town, where you can get stuffed for ¥30. ⚠️ Tea picking experiences require a separate reservation. Spots are limited on weekends, so call one day in advance. There's little shade in the tea fields, so bring a hat and sunglasses; you'll get sunburned in the summer. It's suitable for parents as the paths are flat, and there are pavilions everywhere to sit if you get tired. Spring tea is picked in March and autumn tea in October; it's just green during other months, which can get boring after a while. Qiaoxi Ancient Village is nearby; it's worth a visit to see the old houses. 08 Ma'anshan | Anhui Don't be fooled by the name of Caishiji; it's not about looking at rocks, but about viewing the Yangtze River. 📍 Enter from the East Gate, walk along the riverside plank road to Sanyuan Cave, and then go up to Taibai Pavilion. The whole trip takes two hours. ⏰ Go in the evening when the river surface is dyed orange by the sunset. Cargo ships move slowly, and the wind is strong enough to blow your hat into the river. It's a one-hour drive from Nanjing, and parking is ¥5. 🚄 Take the high-speed train to Ma'anshan East Station, then it's a ¥20 taxi ride to the scenic area. 🍜 Try the pork noodles on Jiefang Road in the city. A bowl is ¥12; the noodles are chewy, and the broth is a bit salty. ⚠️ The cable car in the scenic area is ¥30 one way, but it only takes 20 minutes to walk up, so it's not necessary. It's suitable for kids and seniors as the plank roads are flat. Willow trees sprout by the river in spring, and reeds turn white in autumn. Li Bai's Tomb is in Dangtu, a half-hour drive away, so you can visit it on the way. Of these eight routes, the ones I most want to visit again are Bayanbulak and Arxan—one is vast, the other is quiet. If you only have two days, Zhoushan and Xiamen are the most hassle-free; you can just take a high-speed train and rent a car. Let me know in the comments which route you want to take this weekend, and I'll help you plan a smoother itinerary.

Local travel Self-driving: Driving is more flexible and worry-free for visiting Caishiji, Dehua Ancient Village, Putang, and other places further from the city center. Public transport: The city has a well-developed bus network. You can take a bus directly to urban attractions like Caishiji and the Lin Sanzhi Art Museum. Note: The riverside highway along the Yangtze offers beautiful scenery, and you can pull over at any time to enjoy the view while driving. Must-visit Attractions Caishiji: One of the three famous rocky cliffs along the Yangtze River and the place where the poet Li Bai spent his final years. Taibai Pavilion and Sanyuan Cave stand by the river, and climbing up offers a panoramic view of the rolling Yangtze River. Dehua Creek Ancient Street (Xi Old Street): A typical Hui-style ancient street featuring intangible cultural heritage painted walls and fish lantern decorations, showcasing the vibrant local life of ancient villages in southeastern Anhui. It is a great spot for photos. Putang Scenic Area: A hidden fairyland of bamboo forests and mountains, featuring mountain trails and canyon streams. It is a natural "back garden" for the city and a top choice for escaping the heat and getting some fresh air. Taibai Island Jiangxin Islet: A pastoral island in the middle of the Yangtze River with picturesque river views. It is perfect for camping and enjoying a slow-paced pastoral life. Lin Sanzhi Art Museum: A hall for displaying calligraphy and painting culture, featuring unique Hui-style garden architecture. It is an excellent place for cultural study. Baochan Mountain: The original site where Wang Anshi wrote "Record of a Visit to Baochan Mountain." Watch the sunset over the Yangtze from the riverside walkway in the evening. Day 2: Xi Old Street & Dehua Ancient Village > Putang Bamboo Sea In the morning, head to Xi Old Street, wander through the ancient Hui-style alleys, check out the traditional fish lantern murals and horse-head walls, and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of ancient villages in southeastern Anhui. In the afternoon, head to Putang Scenic Area, walk through the bamboo forests, hike along the canyon streams, and escape the heat in the mountains. Day 3: Taibai Island Jiangxin Islet > Lin Sanzhi Art Museum In the morning, drive to Taibai Island Jiangxin Islet, enjoy the pastoral scenery of the Yangtze River around the island, and relax by the river. In the afternoon, visit the Lin Sanzhi Art Museum, tour the exquisite Hui-style gardens, and experience the charm of traditional calligraphy and painting culture. Day 4: Baochan Mountain (Optional) > Explore the city for food and souvenirs > Departure Cultural enthusiasts can visit Baochan Mountain to explore the historic sites mentioned in Wang Anshi's travelogue. If you prefer not to hike, you can stroll through the old streets of Ma'anshan city, taste authentic local food, and buy souvenirs before heading home. Tip: A simplified 3-day version: Skip the Baochan Mountain trip and focus on the three core spots: Caishiji, Xi Old Street, and Putang. The overall pace will be relaxed and comfortable. Food Recommendations Caishiji tea dried tofu: A landmark specialty of Ma'anshan. It has a salty, savory, and chewy texture, perfect as a cold dish or a snack. Dangtu Braised Pork Noodles: A representative Anhui breakfast. The broth is rich and mellow, served with large chunks of savory pork belly and chewy noodles. Shijiu Lake Crabs: Most delicious in autumn. Steaming them preserves their original flavor. Huangshan sesame cakes and Hengwang Mountain rice wine are local snacks with distinct regional flavors. Hexian fried beef and soup dumplings are authentic local snacks along the Yangtze River. Money-saving Tips 1. It is recommended to book tickets for the Caishiji Scenic Area online in advance. Seniors and students can enjoy discounts with valid ID. There are several free viewing platforms along the Yangtze River, so you can enjoy the river views without entering the scenic area. 2. It is recommended to stay in downtown Ma'anshan. Homestays around tourist attractions are often overpriced, while city hotels have better facilities and are more convenient for commuting. 3. Avoid buying souvenirs like Caishiji tea dried tofu at shops inside scenic areas. Local supermarkets and farmers' markets offer better prices and a wider variety. 4. Most of the mountain scenery in Putang Bamboo Sea is open for free. You can enjoy the views by driving along the mountain roads without purchasing tickets for paid scenic areas. 5. The ancient streets and villages of Xi Old Street are free to visit. All the photo spots are free, so there is no need to rent costumes or pay for professional photography services. 6. There are many free parking and viewing spots along the riverside highway, making it very cost-effective for a self-driving tour of the Yangtze River scenery. 7. For dining, prioritize farm-style restaurants in residential areas of the county. Trendy farmhouses near scenic spots and the river are often overpriced, while old shops frequented by locals offer more authentic flavors and better value. 8. Since many tourists from Nanjing visit on weekends, it is recommended to travel on weekdays in 2026 for more affordable accommodation and dining prices.

There are so many posts online advising people not to come to Ma'anshan. Some say it lacks famous "internet-famous" attractions and isn't very impressive. Others feel the sights are too scattered, making it a hassle to get around. Still others claim that besides Caishiji, there's nothing else worth visiting. I hesitated for a long time before leaving and almost crossed it off my travel list. I came with the mindset of "just wandering around; if it's not fun, I'll just treat it as a relaxing getaway" 🍂. To my surprise, Ma'anshan in autumn has a unique charm. The summer heat has faded, the plane trees are slowly turning yellow, and the air is crisp and refreshing. It has both the grandeur of the rushing Yangtze River and the gentleness of ancient towns and villages, plus old neighborhoods full of artistic flair. As long as you lower your expectations and find the right way to explore, visiting in September–October is not a "hardship" at all—it's actually incredibly healing 🌿 🌟 Attraction highlights (Why visit) ▫️ Caishiji 🏞️ Many people only know it as a place associated with Li Bai and leave after a quick stroll. It's more than just a park. It's one of the three famous rocky cliffs along the Yangtze River, with cliffs overlooking the river and the water rushing by. The park is filled with ancient trees and scattered pavilions. Walk slowly along the riverside path and listen to the water hitting the cliffs. Don't just visit the Taibai Pavilion and leave. Head toward Sanyuan Cave and Santai Pavilion. Climb up to Santai Pavilion, and the magnificent Yangtze River unfolds before you, with the river breeze blowing in your face. In autumn, the leaves are dyed in warm tones, and the sunlight filters through the branches, creating a perfect atmosphere. It holds poetic beauty, perfect for a slow walk to quietly experience the scenery the "Poet Immortal" once loved. ▫️ Putang Scenic Area 🌳 A hidden gem often overlooked by tourists. Vast bamboo forests, deep valleys, and babbling brooks. In September–October, the colors of the mountains and forests gradually become richer. The air is fresh, and the greenery is everywhere—a great place to escape the city's hustle and bustle. Putang Old Street is tucked away by the forest, with artistic shops and farmhouse restaurants scattered throughout. No need to rush between attractions; just find a small shop, sit down for some tea, listen to the birds, and enjoy a slow, leisurely time in the mountains. ▫️ Majianjian (Damiao Cultural and Creative District) 🎨 The most vibrant and artistic corner of Ma'anshan. Transformed from an old residential area, it retains the texture of the old houses. The alleys are filled with cafes, craft shops, interesting wall paintings, and gentle slogans. There are no cookie-cutter "internet-famous" decorations here; everywhere you look, you see the ingenuity of the locals. In the afternoon, the sunlight slants into the alleys, and every corner is photogenic. No need to pose deliberately; just walk, stop, and you can easily take photos full of stories. ▫️ Yuncao Ancient Town 🏘️ A quiet water town. Compared to the crowded water towns of Jiangnan, Yuncao is much more low-key. Bluestone streets, old brick-and-wood houses, and remnants of riverside docks all retain their original appearance. Most of the people on the street are locals, and there aren't dense rows of shops. On an autumn afternoon, sit by the river, soak up the sun, watch the passing residents, and experience the authentic, down-to-earth life of a water town in central Anhui. 🗺️ Recommended itinerary | 3-day, 2-night relaxed trip ✨ Day 1: Arrive in Ma'anshan. In the afternoon, explore the Majianjian Cultural and Creative District and wander through the alleys taking photos. In the evening, go to Caishiji to watch the sunset over the Yangtze River. Have local food in the city center at night. Day 2: Spend the whole day at Putang Scenic Area. Stroll through the bamboo forests and valleys, explore Putang Old Street, and have a farmhouse meal. No need to rush; just enjoy the fresh air and relax. Day 3: Head to Yuncao Ancient Town, take a slow walk through the old street, and experience the water town charm. Return in the afternoon. 👉 2-day condensed version: Caishiji → Majianjian District. Skip Putang and Yuncao Ancient Town to avoid long-distance travel; suitable for short trips with limited time. ⚠️ Pre-trip tips 1. Attractions are quite scattered 🚗 Putang is in the eastern suburbs, and Yuncao Ancient Town is in Hanshan County, some distance from the city center. Driving is the most comfortable option. Public transport is infrequent and time-consuming, so be sure to check bus schedules in advance. 2. Caishiji Park is huge 🥾 There are many trails, and walking the whole thing is tiring. Wear comfortable shoes and choose to visit key spots; you don't have to force yourself to walk every single path. 3. Large temperature difference in the mountains and by the river 🍂 It's quite windy by the river and in the forest. The sun is warm during the day, but the temperature drops in the evening. Remember to bring a light jacket. Be careful of your footing when taking photos by the river or cliffs. 4. Don't pack your itinerary too full 📅 Ma'anshan is perfect for a relaxed, slow-paced trip. Don't rush to several places in one day. Leaving time to zone out, eat, and take walks is the right way to experience it. 💡 Travel tips ✅ Accommodation: Stay in the Yushan District city center. It's convenient for dining and shopping, and very close to Caishiji. ✅ Food 🤤: You must try Huangchi dried tofu, Caishiji tea-flavored dried tofu, Yuncao breakfast, and Hexian fried beef. Don't just eat in the scenic areas; the small shops near residential areas are authentic and affordable. ✅ Photography 📸: The river view from Santai Pavilion in Caishiji, the wall paintings in the alleys of Majianjian, the bamboo forests of Putang, and the riverside old street of Yuncao Ancient Town are all excellent photo spots. Wearing plain-colored or "New Chinese" style clothing looks great in photos. ✅ Saving money ✨: Majianjian District is free; Putang Old Street is free; Yuncao Ancient Town is free. Only Caishiji charges an admission ticket, which you can buy online in advance; there are occasional discounts. ✅ Avoiding traps ⚠️: Compare prices at the souvenir stalls at the entrance of scenic areas. There aren't many restaurants in Putang, so you might want to bring some water and snacks. Don't trust unknown one-day tour advertisements on the roadside. 💭 Final thoughts after the trip 🍂 Many people say they don't recommend visiting Ma'anshan in September–October, mostly because they come with expectations of finding top-tier "internet-famous" attractions. If you are solely pursuing stunning photo ops, you will easily be disappointed. The beauty of Ma'anshan is hidden in its subtle gentleness. It's the rushing Yangtze River by the cliffs of Caishiji; It's the breeze blowing through the bamboo forests of Putang; It's the lazy, artistic atmosphere in the alleys of Majianjian; It's the unhurried, authentic life of the water town in Yuncao Ancient Town. There are no noisy crowds here, no assembly-line tourist attractions. It is suitable for travelers who are willing to slow down. Let go of the anxiety of "checking off" sights, walk slowly, and eat well. You will find that Ma'anshan in autumn holds a rare sense of relaxation and poetic beauty ✨

He’s the man everyone remembers from their school textbooks! With the opening of the Ningma metro line, it’s easy to travel across provincial lines from Nanjing to visit the Li Bai Cultural Park in Dangtu, Ma'anshan, and embark on a poetic journey spanning a thousand years. This is the true final resting place of the "Poet Immortal," Li Bai! He passed away in Dangtu in 762 AD and was later reburied here. The park is serene, historic, and rich in cultural heritage. The main highlight is Li Bai's tomb, where visitors from all over leave bottles of wine—a touching and emotional sight. The park also features the Taibai Shrine and the Taibai Stele Forest. Take your time exploring and reading to fully immerse yourself in the poetic charm of the High Tang Dynasty. Address: Li Bai Cultural Park, Dangtu County, Ma'anshan Admission: CNY 30 (regular); often free during holidays Transportation tips: Take the Nanjing S2 Ningma line to Gushu Station, walk to the Dangtu Bus Station, and transfer to bus 802, which goes directly to the scenic area. If driving, there is a parking lot at the entrance. During holidays, traffic can be heavy, so please park in designated areas along the road. No need to travel far—it's accessible by metro! Come here to offer a cup of wine, read a poem, and pay tribute to the romantic spirit of Li Bai that is deeply ingrained in Chinese culture.

[Rainbow] Li Bai is one of China's greatest poets. There are various theories about his birthplace, such as Qinglian Town in Jiangyou, Mianyang, Sichuan, or Suyab in the Western Regions, and people still haven't reached a consensus. However, there is no controversy about where he passed away—it was within Dangtu County, Anhui Province. Today, Dangtu is under the jurisdiction of Ma'anshan City. You can take the Nanjing Metro Line S2 to the terminal station, Taibai Station, and then transfer to a bus to reach the Li Bai Tomb directly. However, while transportation to the Li Bai Cultural Park is convenient, visitors shouldn't arrive empty-handed; after all, the Poet Immortal still has a taste for that! [Fire] Must-know before you go: [One] Li Bai's tomb vs. Li Bai's cenotaph—verifying the authenticity of the burial site Li Bai passed away in Dangtu, but there are many theories about the cause of his death. Some say he died of drunkenness, others say illness, and there is even a more romantic legend that he was "drinking on the river, jumped into the water to catch the moon while drunk, and then rode a whale to heaven." There are two Li Bai tombs in Ma'anshan: one in Taibai Town, Dangtu, and the other at Caishiji. Which one is real? And what was the cause of his death? According to historical records, in the second year of the Shangyuan era (761 AD), Li Bai sought refuge with his cousin Li Yangbing, who was the magistrate of Dangtu. The following year, he fell seriously ill, handed his manuscripts to Li Yangbing on his deathbed, and passed away at the age of 62. He was initially buried at the eastern foot of Longshan Mountain in Dangtu, and in the 12th year of the Yuanhe era (817 AD), his remains were relocated to the south side of Qingshan Mountain. From this, it can be concluded that the Li Bai tomb in Dangtu is supported by historical evidence, while the one at Caishiji is merely a cenotaph. [Two] Bring a bottle of wine—a romance unique to the Poet Immortal Du Fu once wrote: "Li Bai writes a hundred poems for a jug of wine, sleeping in a tavern in Chang'an. When the Emperor calls, he refuses to board the boat, claiming to be an immortal of wine." From this, it's clear that Li Bai truly loved to drink, so much so that the Li Bai statue in the cultural park is in the pose of "raising a cup to invite the moon." When visiting to pay your respects, why not bring a bottle of wine? Once you reach the tomb, you'll find the two offering tables filled with all kinds of wine bottles. Isn't this a unique way for modern people to show their romance for the Poet Immortal?
