The Xiaohe ancient trail, hidden on the border of Hunan and Guangxi, is a seriously underrated corridor with a history of over a thousand years. When Emperor Qin Shi Huang sent troops to Lingnan, this was the main route. The trail starts in Daoxian, Yongzhou in the north, passes through Jiangyong, and extends all the way to Hezhou, Guangxi. Along the way are ancient villages full of historic charm: Tongkou Village, Gaojia Village, Shanggantang Village, Goulan Yao Village, Chashan Village, and Xiushui Zhuangyuan Village, each rich in heritage. Arriving at Hezhou by high-speed train from Guangzhou South Station early in the morning, I rented a car and drove to Daoxian. The first stop was the confluence of the Xiao River, Yongming River, and Tuo River. Legend has it that when the Qin army reached here, they were blocked by waterways and had to switch to the land route of the ancient trail. The commander Tu Sui is said to be buried here.
