Stayed at the Chengyang Hotel in Xining, so comfortable
Family! Coming to Xining in July to escape the heat is truly exhilarating🦶
I escaped the 38°C steam room of the south, and as soon as I got off the plane, the breeze in Xining refreshed me—24°C! Dry and comfortable! No sticky sweat! What a divine summer!
Xining is truly called the "Summer Capital of China" for good reason. In July, daytime highs are only around 25-26°C, and at night about 15°C. You need a blanket to sleep and a long-sleeve shirt to go out—perfect. You might even forget what air conditioning is.
Plus, Xining is a fascinating city, half faith and half everyday life. Look up and you see temples with red walls and golden roofs; turn around and you’re in a bustling night market full of local flavor. This contrast is so charming.
🕌 Ta’er Monastery: First the stupa, then the monastery, then Xining
When in Xining, Ta’er Monastery is a must-visit.
It’s a 40-minute drive from downtown; I recommend going in the morning when it’s less crowded and the light is perfect. The entire monastery is built on a mountain, with tiered halls and golden roofs dazzling in the sunlight.
The most stunning is the Great Golden Roof Hall, with a roof made entirely of pure gold—rumored to use hundreds of kilograms of gold. Inside, the butter sculptures, murals, and embroidery are called the "Three Wonders of Ta’er Monastery," exquisitely detailed, especially the butter sculptures, which are incredibly intricate patterns made from butter—amazing.
Be sure to walk around the prayer corridor, following local devotees slowly turning prayer wheels and chanting the six-syllable mantra. The atmosphere is deeply calming.
⚠️ Note: No shorts or skirts allowed inside the monastery; hats and sunglasses must be removed. Photography is prohibited inside the halls—please respect the rules.
🍜 Moji Street + Daxing Street: Xining locals’ late-night canteens
How can you come to Xining and not eat? I gained three pounds in three days here, and it’s totally worth it.
First recommendation: hand-pulled lamb! Xining’s lamb is truly exceptional, with no gamey taste, tender enough to squeeze out juice. Dip it in pepper salt and eat it straight—finger-licking good. I can eat a pound by myself, but don’t follow my lead, it’s easy to overeat.
You must also try niangpi (cold noodles)! Different from Shaanxi’s liangpi, Xining’s niangpi is thicker and chewier, with fragrant chili oil, sour and spicy, perfect for summer.
I love sweet fermented barley drink! Made from highland barley, it’s cold and refreshing with a light wine aroma and sweetness. Only 5 yuan for a big bowl—a perfect heat-relief treat.
Also try kangguo lamb, lamb intestine noodles, gaomian slices, Qinghai old yogurt... rotate through them daily, and you won’t repeat a dish in a week.
💡 Food tip: Moji Street is popular with tourists and tastes okay, but locals prefer Daxing Street. To find the most authentic food, just follow where the locals go—you can’t go wrong.
📚 Geometry Bookstore: A summer refuge hidden in the city
If the afternoon sun is too strong and you don’t want to go out, I highly recommend spending the afternoon at Geometry Bookstore.
It’s the largest independent bookstore in Xining, with three full floors and a very stylish cave-like design—great for photos. They have a wide range of books, including many on Qinghai’s local culture.
There’s a café inside; order a coffee and find a window seat to read or daydream. Outside the sun blazes, but inside it’s cool and comfortable—very pleasant.
The bookstore also sells many cultural and creative products like incense, thangka paintings, and handmade accessories—great as souvenirs.
🌳 Nanbei Mountain: A great spot to overlook Xining’s panorama
To see the full view of Xining, go to Nanbei Mountain.
Nanshan is closer, about a 20-minute taxi ride from downtown. Hiking takes about an hour, or you can take a cable car. At the top is Phoenix Pavilion, where you can see the entire city, the Huangshui River flowing through, and layers of distant mountains—spectacular.
Beishan is farther but quieter and less crowded. Beishan Temple is built on a cliff—very unique, but not recommended if you’re afraid of heights.
Evening is the best time to visit—no harsh sun and you can watch the sunset. The golden light bathes the city in a beautiful glow.
🏛️ Qinghai Provincial Museum: The first stop to understand Qinghai
If you’re interested in Qinghai’s history and culture, you must visit the Qinghai Provincial Museum.
It’s free with advance reservation. The museum isn’t large but has exquisite exhibits, covering ancient civilizations, the Tang-Tubo Ancient Road, and Tibetan Buddhism, clearly outlining Qinghai’s historical context.
The most famous piece is the "Gilded Bronze Avalokitesvara Statue," incredibly detailed—you could stare at it for ages. There are also many Tibetan Buddhist ritual objects and thangka paintings worth seeing.
After visiting, your understanding of Qinghai will deepen, and your experience in other places will be richer.
🌡️ The right way to enjoy summer in Xining
Honestly, Xining isn’t a city full of trendy check-in spots. Its charm lies in everyday life.
Wake up and have a bowl of lamb intestine noodles, visit Ta’er Monastery in the morning, take a nap in the city at noon, spend the afternoon reading at a bookstore or sipping tea at a teahouse, hike a mountain to watch the sunset in the evening, then enjoy a meal at the night market and stroll along the Huangshui River.
A day like this, unhurried and relaxed, is the true way to escape the summer heat.
⚠️ Practical info, key points
