Antelope Island was my first big wow moment in Utah. Even on the way to the island, the landscape begins to change: the Great Salt Lake surrounds me, bright patches of dry seabed, salt, mountains, and the feeling of a completely different world. 🌊 The island itself is located about 40 miles north of Salt Lake City. The last 7 miles of the road run along a causeway across the lake, and this section alone is worth the trip. Right now, the water level in Great Salt Lake remains low, so in some places you have to walk more than half a kilometer to the shore, and all around you open up to vast, bright expanses of salt and dry land. (stateparks.utah.gov) 🦬 And then the bison appear. And that's when I was truly delighted. They walk around the island, lie in the grass, cross the road in front of the car, and stand calmly against the backdrop of the mountains, as if everything around them belonged only to them 😅 We saw them very close and just sat in the car, wondering: is this really happening? You can hear them snorting, crunching the grass, and shifting their hooves heavily. Such moments are later remembered more vividly than any viewing. 🐏 Besides bison, the island is home to pronghorn, deer, bighorn sheep, and a variety of birds. Currently, the park maintains a herd of approximately 500-550 animals, and every fall, it conducts the famous Bison Roundup to control the population. In 2026, about 800 bison will gather for the fall migration before further sorting. (stateparks.utah.gov) 🚗 The easiest way to get here is by car. The park is located approximately 41 miles from Salt Lake City, and admission costs $15 per vehicle for up to eight people. Antelope Island itself is open daily from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Here you want to stop at lookouts, watch the bison, drive further along the lake, and simply soak in this vast, open landscape.
