Living in Ganzi year-round, especially in Ganzi County, we've visited 90% of the scenic spots included in the lifetime pass multiple times with the kids. This genuine family experience guide will tell you if it’s worth buying~ 1. Hailuogou, 8/10. Many people complain about Hailuogou, but they just haven’t found the right way to enjoy it! The key is to travel with kids in winter to see the golden sunlight on the mountain peaks, soak in hot springs, take the cable car to overlook the giant ice waterfall, hike through the primeval forest, and get up close to the glacier tongue. It’s close to Chengdu and at a low altitude, which is a big advantage for family trips. Kids won’t suffer much from altitude sickness, the scenery along the way is stunning, and the kids will love it. 2. Daocheng Yading, 9.5/10. For many who buy the lifetime pass, Yading is probably the most attractive spot! Yading has a bad reputation online, but trust me, it’s definitely worth visiting with kids. However, it has a high entry threshold, depends heavily on weather, and you need to pick the right season. Many tourists lack understanding of Yading and blindly go, which can lead to disappointment. I once took my kids there in the perfect golden autumn season, and it was one of the few landscapes that moved me to tears. It’s a great way to let kids experience the grandeur of the plateau and broaden their horizons. 3. Mugecuo, 6/10. It’s not as bad as some online say, but Ganzi has so many free beautiful spots that it gets overshadowed. This year, Mugecuo also opened the "Ice Floating" activity. Overall, it’s better to visit with kids in winter, and you can combine it with hot springs in Zhonggu Village. Soaking in hot springs and playing ice floating with kids makes for a nice experience. 4. Dege Printing House, 9/10. The general public may not know this site well, but those familiar with Tibetan culture know the importance of the Dege Printing House. It’s the foremost of the four great Tibetan printing houses, guarding faith for over 300 years. To me, it’s a living museum. Among cultural sites in western Sichuan, it definitely ranks in the top three. When visiting with kids, be sure to hire a good guide who can vividly introduce Tibetan culture and the history of the printing house to broaden the kids’ knowledge. 5. Yulong Lacuo, 8/10. Known as the "Number One Lake in Western Sichuan," and it lives up to the name! Some people think it’s not beautiful because they didn’t come in the right season. The best views of Xinlu Sea are in April and May when the lake just thaws, and the water color is truly dreamy and unaffected by weather. In contrast, summer is the busiest season, but the water is murky and loses its beauty. Don’t believe those who say the viewing platform outside the park is enough. The essence of Xinlu Sea is in the ever-changing views along the lakeside. Many people only have a superficial understanding and don’t know the correct route or lighting conditions. Be sure to visit with kids in the afternoon—this is based on dozens of visits. Walking along the lakeshore with kids, enjoying the stunning lake views, is super healing. 6. Xinlong Hongshan Scenic Area, 7/10. Sometimes it feels like Ganzi gets unfairly criticized, maybe because Ganzi’s cultural tourism isn’t well promoted. Hongshan isn’t the most beautiful spot, but it’s very distinctive. In the plateau’s usual snow mountains and grasslands, suddenly seeing Danxia landforms enriches the whole family trip and prevents aesthetic fatigue. Plus, Hongshan is close to Ganzi County, with convenient transportation, so it’s easy to check in with kids on the way. Recently, while organizing summer photos from the 317 Ganzi County Grand Loop at home, I was truly amazed by the beauty. People say Genie is the pinnacle of Western Sichuan, and I admit Genie is beautiful, but I’ve always felt that when it comes to the “most family-friendly spots in Western Sichuan,” it has to be some of the hidden gems along our 317 Ganzi County Grand Loop. A casual snap by the roadside reveals such breathtaking scenery: a sea of pink and purple flowers plus towering snow-capped mountains. Most importantly! This isn’t a photo trick using some telephoto lens to zoom in on the mountains. Seeing it in person, the snow mountains are very close, and the scenery is incredibly three-dimensional. Kids can safely run around in the flower sea. The road conditions here are also better. It’s just a one-hour direct flight from Chengdu to Gesa’er Airport, then a one-and-a-half-hour drive on fully paved roads to get here. Any small car or electric vehicle can make it. You can endure 38°C heat in Chengdu in the morning, then sit under a canopy in the flower sea enjoying a cool 20°C breeze in the afternoon—perfect for bringing kids to escape the summer heat. There are very few people here, extremely few. Such a beautiful flower sea can be privately enjoyed. Bring your kids and dogs and run and play freely in the flowers. Also, the blooming period of this flower sea is quite special. The photos were taken on August 24. The best time for flower seas in Xinjiang is usually late May, and the main bloom in Western Sichuan is from late June to late July. This means that when the flower seas in Xinjiang and other parts of Western Sichuan have faded, this place still blooms. Travelers at the end of summer vacation will be thrilled. The scenery here is diverse. Besides the flower sea, a short drive takes you to the dreamy green glacial lake, whose water color is unaffected by weather or light. You can visit the super temple beneath the glacier, the best temple in all of Western Sichuan without exception. At the lake, watch the rippling waves. Stay inside the temple and feel the tranquility. It’s a fully immersive experience with few people and beautiful scenery, bringing travel back to its original essence.
