Strolling and dining at South Melbourne Market
South Melbourne Market is another local market in Melbourne. The market area features a variety of establishments, including restaurants, dessert cafes, coffee shops, fresh seafood vendors, butcher shops, fruit and vegetable stalls, as well as grocery stores, household items, and handcrafted goods. It's truly diverse!
On weekends, the market gets crowded with both locals and tourists. Most people buy food from various stalls and enjoy it either inside the market or outside. Inside, there are designated dining zones with tables for placing food and standing to eat. You can grab any available spot. If you prefer sitting, you can head outside to the back of the market where seating is provided.
The highlights here are the fresh oysters, large lobsters, and the famous Padre Coffee, which is a must-try for anyone visiting the market.

So you’ve visited Queen Victoria Market, but have you checked out South Melbourne Market?
I personally love the vibes and variety of foods and stuffs sold here. The fresh produce is not as cheap as in QVM but the whole atmosphere makes up for it. I enjoyed walking around the market more than I so at QVM. They also have a nice touch on each entrance: adding “welcome” in several different languages! They sure are going to make everyone feels welcomed!
Address - 322-326 Coventry St, South Melbourne, Australia
Tram 96 stops right beside the market, stop at South Melbourne station.

Popular & Artisanal cafe in south melbourne
#afternoontea conveniently located opposite south melbourne market! Great for taking an afternoon break after you've done your shopping 😁🤩
📍321 Conventry St, South Melbourne, VIC 3205
A more contemporary and sleek looking cafe, code black coffee has a few different outlets around Melbourne but the one we visited was at South Melbourne (right opposite South Melbourne market, convenient for shopping once you're done eating 😉) The food here is delicious of course! But to me personally, the portions are too big! It's difficult to finish your plate + the flavours are more strong, as mentioned very artisanal.

Affordable & Modern studio in south melbourne
Address - 51 Palmerston Cres, South Melbourne VIC 3205
Ambiance/Facilities - studio with microwave & fridge
Highlights - Spacious room & affordable price
Avg. Price per Person - $100/night
Rating : 4/5
Booked this place for my Melbourne trip and it was not too bad. I wanted to stay somewhere outside of the CBD and this place was pretty affordable. The entrance way is a bit shady but the room itself was really nice. The studio was pretty big with a dining table & chair + a microwave and fridge. The bed is surprisingly really comfy and I loved it so much! There’s not much facilities but overall I think its a pretty good location as its about a 10 mins walk to park street tram station, a walking distance to a few cafes and albert park.
Must try melbourne gourmet Sandwiches 🥪😍
Address - 253 Coventry St, South Melbourne VIC 3205
Ambiance/Facilities - Sleek and modern, Indoor & outdoor seatings
Highlights - Delicious wide range of toasties
Avg. Price per Person - $15
Rating - 5/5
This was my first time visiting Hectors Deli & I would 10/10 recommend everyone who's in melbourne to pop by and grab a delicious toasties.
We ordered the beef & pickles (+ cheese & hectic sauce) AND IT WAS PERFECT — The balance of the tangyness and the savoury bits of beef and cheese was out of this world 🌎 It does get really messy so if you prefer something more tame but just as good we also tried the mushroom and cheese. it was juicy and cheesy which is everything you want in a delicious toastie.
Definitely gonna make a visit again if im in melbourne, they have a few outlets like another in richmond too (flagship store)
KOMEYUI Japanese Restaurant - Melbourne
Address - 181 Ferrars St, South Melbourne VIC 3205, Australia
Ambiance/Facilities - Fine Dining Japanese Restaurant
Highlights - Super delicious and fresh nigiri sushi, roll and tempura
Additional comments - Visited this restaurant at their old place and it was very amazing. I came with 2 other friends and all the food we ordered are as displayed on the pics. Those dishes alone however is enough to make 3 fully grown adults full for that day. The roll was very delicious and all ingredients used were fresh. The prawn tempura is very crispy and very delicious as well. The highlight of the day has to go to the nigiri sushi. We ordered the salmon, otoro, chutoro and beef. All of the pieces are made from fresh cuts and you know it’s fresh from the taste alone. They have since moved to a new place at the address above but the taste hasn’t changed at all. Definitely one of the best places for a Japanese Fine Dining in Melbourne
Avg. Price per Person - AU$ 50 - 100 (depending on what you order) (there are also set menus with different pricing)
Rating - 5/5

South Melbourne Market: Food and souvenirs galore
📍Address: 322-326 Coventry St, South Melbourne VIC 3205, Australia
🕰️Opening Hours: 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM (Closed Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday)
South Melbourne Market, established in 1867, is open only four days a week. Be sure to check availability before your visit to avoid disappointment. In addition to the usual produce, fresh produce, and florists, the market also boasts a variety of small food vendors and souvenir shops, making it a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.
The market is clean and tidy, with wide paths, making it a pleasant and relaxing stroll unlike the cluttered, cluttered atmosphere of traditional markets. Along the market's perimeter, numerous restaurants offer outdoor seating, making it a truly enjoyable experience to savor fresh seafood while basking in the Melbourne sunshine. A stroll through the area is highly recommended.
Chéri Melbourne, a must-try for bakery lovers.
If you have the chance to visit Melbourne and stroll around South Melbourne Market, Chéri is a must-visit. It's not exactly located right next to the market, but you can find it just across the street.
As soon as you open the door, the first thing you'll notice is the aroma of coffee and pastries wafting through the shop. The atmosphere inside is truly exquisite. The decor is luxurious yet warm, with a dazzling array of cakes and pastries displayed in glass cases. But the highlight is the courtyard area inside. It's a beautifully decorated open space, flooded with natural light, making for some great photos.
The menu item I really loved was the Croissant French Toast. This large croissant is French toast, and the bread is incredibly buttery and fragrant. When dipped in egg and fried until crispy on the outside, it's soft on the inside. It's served with fruit and sauce, a perfect combination. I also ordered coffee and a few pastries to try. Everything was well-made, truly believing in a true European-style restaurant.
This shop isn't just a coffee shop or a pastry shop; it's a great place to relax and enjoy a leisurely breakfast or brunch. Perfect for those looking for a great atmosphere, delicious food, and beautiful desserts to take photos with.
If you're looking to follow in their footsteps, check out this location:

I prefer South Melbourne Market to Victoria Market.
I love the atmosphere of South Melbourne Market! The seafood is so fresh and sweet!
Established in 1866, it's one of Melbourne's oldest continuously operating traditional markets.
The market offers a diverse selection of stalls, including fresh fruits and vegetables, seafood, meat, handicrafts, clothing, and homewares.
Open Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 8 a.m. Located at the intersection of Coventry and Cecil Streets, it's easily accessible by tram 96, tram 12, and bus 236.
South Melbourne Market: Fresh seafood and street food at your fingertips
Last weekend, my partner and I explored South Melbourne Market. The culinary experience was truly enriching and unforgettable. From the oysters and scallops to the authentic charcuterie, every one of them is highly recommended.
Oysters & Scallops: The Ultimate Fresh and Sweet Seafood
What captivated me most were, of course, the freshly opened oysters and sashimi-grade scallops. The oysters were incredibly plump and perfectly paired with lemon juice, bursting with sweetness and juiciness, with absolutely no fishy flavor. No seasoning needed, simply enjoying the natural flavor of the sea was incredibly satisfying.
The scallops were also thick and fresh, with a springy, umami-rich bite, truly showcasing the high quality of Southern Hemisphere seafood. Fresh, sweet, and smooth, they were a must-try.
Charcuterie Recommendations: The authentic charcuterie is also fantastic
We also tried some charcuterie at the market, including the delicious calamari and chips and a filling (presumably a meat pie with a hint of cumin). It was spicy, crispy on the outside, and tender on the inside, and incredibly flavorful with a little sauce. Eating these hot dishes during a cold Melbourne winter is a real treat.
Summary
South Melbourne Market isn't just a great place to buy groceries; it's also a fantastic place to enjoy the local cuisine. Whether you prefer raw or cooked food, you'll find something surprising here. Next time, bring a few friends and share a variety of dishes. You won't be disappointed!

South Melbourne Market – Melbourne
#summervacay
This market is pure summer color and flavor. I wandered through stalls overflowing with fresh fruit, seafood, and handmade goods. The scent of paella and dumplings made it impossible not to snack. I grabbed an iced Vietnamese coffee and sat outside watching street musicians play in the shade. Everyone seemed happy here—locals, tourists, families. It’s laid-back, delicious, and full of character. I left with fresh berries and a full heart. #summervacay
Brew, Bite & Browse: The Perfect Morning at South Melbourne Market
#summervacay #July2025 #australiatrip #aussie
If Melbourne mornings had a scent, it would start at Padre Coffee. Bold, balanced, and roasted to perfection, this beloved café is a first-stop ritual for locals and market regulars. The line moves quickly, the service is sharp, and the reward is always in that first sip.
Next? A detour to Tea Drop. Elegant, aromatic blends await—perfect for slowing down the pace with a floral or spiced brew. It’s a quieter contrast to Padre’s rush, but no less refined.
Then follow your nose to the donut stand—where warm, sugar-dusted rings fly off trays and into eager hands. It’s impossible to stop at one.
With limited seating and high foot traffic, this isn’t a place to linger—it’s a place to roam, graze, and discover.

Ready-to-eat fresh oysters from South Melbourne Market🦪
A paradise for seafood lovers, where you can achieve seafood freedom!
Fresh oysters from different regions of Australia are only 28-30 Australian dollars, which is an average of more than 10 Hong Kong dollars each. They are so fresh that they have a strong seawater flavor and the sweetness of the oyster itself! Too good to be true
