#greece #greekfood #greece The Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens, known as the Metropolis, is the cathedral church of the Archdiocese of Athens, which has been under restoration and since 2017 has opened its doors to the public. Construction of the cathedral began on Christmas Day 1842 with the laying of the cornerstone by King Otto and Queen Amalia. Behind Metropolis is the church of Agios Eleftherios, known as the Little Metropolis. The seat of the Archbishop of Athens and leader of the Church of Greece. Designed by distingueshed architect Theophil Hansen, it combines the traditional byzantine cross-in-square with Hansen western sensibilities resulting in probably the most influential church design in Greece.
