It became world famous after being the inspiration for the French national song "On the Pont d'Avignon". Originally, it had a tower 900m away, but due to repeated wars and flooding of the Rhône River, restoration work was halted after the 17th century, and only four piers and a chapel remain. The original 22 arches can no longer be seen, and only part of the bridge remains.
