Free Yukemuri Observatory: A Hidden Spot for Capturing Beppu's Essence

When you think of Beppu in Kyushu, what comes to mind first? Perhaps the Hell Hot Springs or the famous 'Eight Hot Springs' experience. However, for locals and seasoned travelers, the Yukemuri Observatory is the ultimate spot to truly grasp the soul of Beppu. This serene location lacks bustling crowds and commercial vibes. Instead, it offers a mesmerizing view of white steam rising from countless hot spring rooftops, weaving together the city's softest contours. Whether you're looking to capture the quintessential Beppu landscape or simply want to watch this hot spring city breathe, this is the place to be. 🌫 Highlights of the Observatory|A Sky Canvas of Rising Steam Located in the elevated Kannawa Hot Spring area, Yukemuri Observatory is a small, free-to-access viewing platform. The most enchanting times to visit are early morning and dusk, when the light is low and the temperature drops slightly, making the steam from the hot springs even more pronounced—like the city whispering softly. The observatory overlooks the Kannawa hot spring district, with distant views of Beppu Bay and the cityscape intertwined with mountain ridges. It's not only a paradise for photography enthusiasts but also a place where travelers can write poetry with their eyes. 📸 Photography Tips • Best Times: 30 minutes before sunrise or 1 hour before sunset • Recommended Equipment: Telephoto lenses for capturing steam details; wide-angle smartphone lenses for cityscapes • Steam Tips: Steam is most abundant in cold weather and high humidity, making winter especially magical 🚶 How to Get to Yukemuri Observatory Though not far from Beppu city center, the observatory is located on a small hill. Choose your route based on your mode of transportation: 🚗 Driving/Rental Car: Search 'Yukemuri Observatory' on Google Maps for navigation. Free parking is available. It's about a 15-minute drive from Beppu Station. 🚌 Bus: Take the **Kamenoi Bus** and get off at 'Kannawa' station, then walk uphill for about 15 minutes. Consider combining this with the 'Beppu Hell Tour' route, visiting Kannawa's steam-cooking spots or foot baths along the way. 🚕 Taxi: A taxi ride from Beppu Station costs around 1,800–2,000 yen and takes less than 20 minutes, ideal for groups. 🧭 Suggested Itinerary Half-day trip recommendation: Perfume Museum → Kannawa steam-cooked lunch → Foot bath stroll → Yukemuri Observatory → Return to Beppu Station and check into a hot spring inn Whether you're looking to capture stunning travel memories or simply seeking a moment of tranquility, this is a must-visit high point in the city. 📍 Yukemuri Observatory • Address: 〒874-0842 Oita Prefecture, Beppu City, Ogura • Hours: Open year-round, 24/7 (no nighttime lighting) • Admission: Free Nearby Attractions: Kannawa Hot Springs, Jigoku Steam Workshop, Hell Hot Springs Tour The soul of Beppu rises here—the charm of this city isn't just about soaking in hot springs but also the quiet, drifting steam that reminds you this is a city coexisting with volcanoes. At Yukemuri Observatory, it's as if you're standing outside of time, watching the city breathe, pulse, and yet remain dreamlike in its tranquility.

Here is a good place not many people know about. The viewpoint locates upper side of Kannawa Onsen town. From the Kannawa main buss station, it takes around 10 or 15 minutes walk, then you will see “uncountable” Onsen smokes. It is the very picture of Onsen town, amazing and great. If you are not sure of direction, you can get a map in a tourist infomation in front of Kannawa main bus station. After the walk, you may be tired some, but no problem! The town have many Onsens! The view of the city is really nice. And you can really see where all the onsens are and that they really do have hot water. #givethanks #givethanks
