AlUla, also spelled Al Ola, is the essence of traveling in Saudi Arabia. Though just a small town, it combines magnificent natural scenery with rich cultural history. It’s no exaggeration to say that a trip to Saudi Arabia isn’t complete without visiting AlUla. Besides spending all day like influencers soaking in luxurious hotel pools and taking photos, there are many scenes here that make you question if you’re even on Earth—perfect for photography. 🐘 Elephant Rock P3-5 Recommended to shoot from half an hour before sunset until the blue hour just after dusk when the lights come on—two completely different styles within a short time span. 🍧 Ice Cream Rock P6-7 Located opposite Elephant Rock, not many people know about this spot. It’s also my recommended sunrise location. Although AlUla has many similar weathered rock formations, this one stands out because it’s close to Elephant Rock and Vessel Hole Rock, making it convenient to check all three off your list. It’s just a two to three hundred meter drive from Elephant Rock, but there’s a thin layer of quicksand in between, so be sure to maintain your speed—going too slow might cause your car to get stuck. 🍶 Vessel Hole Rock P8-11 A ten-minute hike from the small path next to Ice Cream Rock. Great as a foreground for star photography. After shooting the sunrise at Ice Cream Rock, it’s also nice to come here for daytime scenery shots. Rainbow Rock P14-15 Surrounded by wilderness with no signal, it’s also a famous stargazing spot. You have to drive on a sandy and rocky road, so don’t drive too fast to avoid slipping. Many have reported getting stuck on the roadside at night, so take it slow here. Maraya Concert Hall P12-13 A must-visit spot for every influencer, no introduction needed. You can only enter if you stay at the luxury hotel inside or have a reservation at the restaurant. We were lucky during Ramadan when it was quiet, and security let us in. Hegra P1-2 Visiting Hegra requires joining a guided tour costing 95 SAR, which must be booked in advance on the official website. The tour only stops at four points and feels rushed, lasting about 2.5 hours—not ideal for photography enthusiasts. I recommend the afternoon tour and skipping the commentary (it’s a bit dull) to maximize shooting time. Old Town AlUla P16-18 Not many people during the day, but it’s atmospheric at night. There are parking lots on both the north and south sides. After parking, you can take a free electric shuttle to the town. 🌴 Oasis Farm P19 Not far from the Old Town is a large date palm grove—an oasis in the desert, very photogenic! You can also see farmers working inside. 🏔 Harrat Viewpoint P20 Located at Harrat Uwayrid, an ancient volcano, this viewpoint offers the best panoramic view of AlUla from above, somewhat making up for the no-drone policy. 🏡 Accommodation Most online recommendations focus on a few luxury desert camps, but there are also options near the Old Town and Elephant Rock for a few hundred SAR per night, which is very convenient if you’re driving. 🛻 Self-Driving While taxis are available, they only reach the usual spots like the Old Town, Concert Hall, and Elephant Rock. Many places are signal-free wilderness. You can fly into AlUla Airport and rent a car, or rent one in Riyadh or Jeddah and drive over. You can refer to my previous Saudi Arabia self-driving guide.

Never imagined I would ring in the new year in Saudi Arabia at the end of the year. Jeddah, this romantic name, is the most beautiful coastal resort city in Saudi Arabia. It is also one of the few gentle places in this country dominated by sandstorms and heat. Opening the map, Jeddah lies right next to the Red Sea, stretching deeply along the coastline. Since Saudi Arabia faces west, Jeddah is also the best place to enjoy the sunset over the sea. Zooming out on the map, wow... Sudan is just across the water, instantly making my pores tighten... In January, Jeddah’s temperature stays around 25 degrees Celsius, comfortably wrapped in an early summer’s gentle embrace. I heard this is one of the rarest and most pleasant seasons in Saudi Arabia. Jeddah’s coastline stretches for tens of kilometers, making walking almost a luxury. I picked a few spots to connect this coastal story — the Floating Mosque, Mission Stars Beach, North Corniche National Park, and the time-worn Old Town of Jeddah. 🩵 Floating Mosque The mosque built entirely on the Red Sea left the deepest impression on me. The pure white building and corridors against the blue sea create an indescribable vastness. Inside the mosque, a huge floor-to-ceiling window looks out onto the boundless Red Sea. Here, taking photos feels natural; locals are already used to tourists, which made me feel at ease to quietly appreciate the uniqueness of this building. 🩵 Mission Stars Beach This is the best place to go into the water. The beach is soft and white, protected by an artificial breakwater. The Red Sea is even clearer than I imagined. If I hadn’t forgotten my swim trunks, I would have definitely jumped in for a splash! 🩵 North Corniche National Park Our hotel happened to be right next to this park, and I watched the last sunset of 2025 here. In Jeddah, you must choose a high-rise hotel; the breathtaking views make staying in your room a healing journey. 🩵 Jeddah Old Town The Old Town is the place that best reflects the everyday life of Jeddah. Because Jeddah is close to the border, many migrant workers live here—from Somalia, Yemen, Sudan, Egypt. Jeddah welcomes people from all over the Middle East with the most inclusive attitude. Due to different religious beliefs, wearing shorts here seems novel, and me wearing pink shorts is even more eye-catching, haha. I left the last sunset of 2025 in the Red Sea. This year was neither particularly good nor bad, just naturally moving closer to and farther from people. The happy thing is, I don’t always have to play a social role; the self who used to wrap up tightly inside has been continuously warmed by those who come close. I originally thought the stories of the Middle East would be intense and grand, but stepping into this place felt like being gently placed into an old painting. The brick walls, wooden windows, and weathered textures are all warmed by the sun. Drape a headscarf, wear low-saturation earth-toned clothes, and when the wind blows, time in the photos begins to slow down. Here, no posing is needed; just standing casually is a picture. 📍 Al-Balad Citywalk Old Town Route (can be copied directly): 1. Al Naseef House The rooftop terrace offers a view of the entire old town, perfect for portrait shots. 2. Al Juffali Mosque Shoot at sunset; the light is soft, and the contours of people look very beautiful. 3. Green Door Area Old Door Clusters There are many emerald green and deep indigo old wooden doors here; leaning against the wall or standing sideways creates great shots. 4. Unexpectedly, right after landing in Jeddah, I was captivated by the 2025 Islamic Arts Biennale next to the airport, now in its second edition! It showcases contemporary artworks combined with historical artifacts from Islamic culture, truly a feast for the eyes! I heard the Qatari 🇶🇦 prince opened a private collection, filled with dazzling treasures. It feels way more exciting than visiting the Riyadh National Museum. · 📌 The entire exhibition is free; you just need to register on the Islamic Arts Biennale website. 📌 Since it’s next to the airport, you can watch planes 🛩️ take off and land up close. 📌 The staff inside are very enthusiastic; as soon as you enter their area, they’ll come over to explain everything to you. 📌 There’s also a restaurant and café inside, so you can rest if you get tired from walking around. ⏱️ Exhibition period: 2025.1.25–2025.5.25
