Bergamo is one of the five famous Italian cities protected by ancient city walls. Its ancient city walls were listed as a World Cultural Heritage in 2017. Today, I recommend four great attractions: 🚗 Rocca di Bergamo: This is a defensive fortification dating back to the 13th century. No tickets are required, and you can see the entire mountain city of Bergamo and the snow-capped mountains in the distance by walking around the fortification. The sunset is even more spectacular on a good day! 🚗 Campanone: Here you can enjoy the magnificent view of the ancient city (Upper Town). It also has the largest bell in the Lombardy region. 🚗 S. Vigilio Castle: This castle can be reached by taking the S. Vigilio mountain train and then walking. The scenery along the way is more beautiful than the top of the castle. You can try taking the train up the mountain and walking down. 🚗 Torre dei Caduti: In the center of the lower town of Bergamo stands a monument to those who died during World War I. This tower has become a symbol of modern Bergamo and is also a great place to see the panoramic view of the lower town of Bergamo. 🚗 Venetian Walls Mura Veneto Built by the Venetians in the 16th century, the 5 km long city wall was one of the most important fortresses built by the Venetians on the mainland. The city wall has four gates: Porta San Lorenzo, Porta Sant'Agostino, Porta Sant'Alessandro, and Porta San Giacomo. 🚗 Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore: Built in 1137 and completed after 300 years. It has a Roman architectural style and is not just a church, but the most important monumental building in the city, as well as the burial place of the great composer Gaetano Donizetti, who was born here.
