Chiang Mai Doi Suthep Temple Detailed Guide

Doi Suthep Temple in Chiang Mai is a famous Buddhist summer retreat in Thailand, a must-visit during your trip to Chiang Mai. It enshrines the relics of Lord Buddha, bringing good luck to those who see them 🙏 Legend has it that the temple was built in 1383 during the Lanna Kingdom. According to the tale, a revered monk brought several Buddha relics to Thailand. To find a blessed site for enshrining the relics, the monks placed them on the back of a white elephant and let it roam freely. The elephant eventually arrived at Doi Suthep Mountain and knelt down here, leading to the construction of a stupa on this spot. The temple is called "Wat Phra That Doi Suthep" (Twin Dragons Temple) because of the two long dragon sculptures guarding the staircase on both sides. Circumambulate the stupa three times to pray for world peace and the well-being of all beings 🙏. Inside the main hall, a monk blesses devotees with holy water and ties a sacred thread for protection, good fortune, and smooth journeys. Besides statues of Buddha and various Bodhisattvas, the temple's walls are adorned with paintings depicting its origin story.
