Sanmao's Former Residence in Huangjuya, Chongqing

"I'm from Chongqing, Huangjuya!" Sanmao, originally named Chen Maoping, later changed her name to Chen Ping. During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Sanmao's father Chen Siqing was unwilling to live in the occupied area of ​​Shanghai, so he left his pregnant wife and came to Chongqing. After Sanmao's sister Chen Tianxin was born, Sanmao's mother Miao Jinlan also came to Chongqing and the family lived in Huangjuya, Nanshan. Sanmao was born in Chongqing in 1943. When she was 5 years old, she went to Taiwan with her parents. Even after leaving Chongqing, Sanmao did not forget her hometown accent. In an interview, she said in Chongqing dialect: "I am from Chongqing, Huangjueya!" Huangjueya hides many stories of Sanmao's childhood: for example, the neighbors and friends like to call Sanmao Pingping. She was fair and clean when she was a child, and liked to wear two pigtails; her father Chen Siqing worked in the Central Bank Mint and rode a horse to work every day; when she was two years old, she often ran to a nearby wasteland grave alone, dug out the soil next to the wasteland grave to make clay figures, and brought the clay figures back to scare other children and make them cry; Sanmao's family had a swing, and Sanmao liked to play on the swing with her sister when she was a child. Every time she swung very high, her sister was afraid that she would fall, and would keep shouting from below, but Sanmao was not afraid at all... In 1987, Sanmao returned to her hometown just to find the small wooden house where she lived in her childhood. Fortunately, the wooden house is still there, and Sanmao stood in front of it with tears in her eyes. She took a lot of photos of the wooden house and went looking for her old friends. In October 2019, Sanmao's former residence opened after three years of renovation. As one of the 175 historical buildings in Huangjuya Old Street, this is the birthplace of Sanmao and where she grew up. The living room of Sanmao and her sister was transformed into a study scene, showing the audience various text versions of Sanmao's works, as well as photos of Sanmao and her family.
