Lotus Mountain or Lianhuashan, 莲花山, is the site of an ancient quarry in Panyu, Guangzhou. Stone was cut from the imposing cliffs here for centuries but it is now a garden. There is also a Qing Dynasty fort, as this was a strategic point guarding the Pearl River and the approach to Guangzhou; ultimately the detachment here failed to stop the British from sailing up river and sacking the capital. The fort includes a stone labyrinth that was used for troop training. With the Qing guards gone, the river is now watched over by a huge golden statue of Guanyin. Finally there's a pagoda which you can climb to the top of, unlike most others in Guangzhou. Lianhuashan is a peaceful place to spend a day in Guangzhou. #qingmingtravel #urbanexplorer #lightthecity #springblossoms #garden #park #lotus #guangzhou #guangdong #panyu #relaxing #photography

Baomoyuan is like a classical Chinese garden on steroids. If Suzhou has the Humble Administrator's Garden, this might be the Ostentatious Plenipotentiary's Garden. Besides being very large, it has some rather untraditional elements, like tackily lit grottoes and a children's wading pool. For the most part, though, it follows the conventions of classical architecture and design. Highlights include exquisite haut relief carvings, a vibrant rose garden and hundreds of colourful koi fish. Located on the outskirts of Panyu District, Guangzhou, a visit here could be combined with a trip to nearby Daliang in Shunde, Foshan or Shawan Old Town in Panyu. A combination ticket is available for Baomoyuan and the neighbouring Nanyueyuan 南粤苑, another garden. #qingmingtravel #urbanexplorer #lightthecity #guangzhou #garden #classical #architecture #photography #springblossoms

Travel back to the 19th century as you step onto the square in front of Guangzhou's Sacred Heart Cathedral. Apparently the largest all-granite church in the world, the Gothic cathedral, nicknamed the Stone House, 石室, was first constructed in the 1860s, led by French missionaries. At the time, its spires towered over the surrounding buildings and locals allegedly feared it would damage the feng shui of the area. Now it is dwarfed by nearby skyscrapers and cannot be seen from very far, but once on the square, it still dominates its immediate neighbourhood. It was damaged in the Second World War and used as a warehouse during the Cultural Revolution, but it has since been well restored, including new stained glass windows and a better quality roof. The sharp double spires have become a symbol of Guangzhou, featuring alongside Canton Tower and the Five Goats statue in Yuexiu Park in posters and advertising throughout the city. The cathedral is sometimes open for sightseeing or private prayer between mass, but the main gate seems to be open somewhat sporadically. The square outside the gate is the best place to view the whole façade though and is a popular spot for selfies in Old Canton. The Sacred Heart Cathedral is a short walk from Haizhu Square 海珠广场站 and Yidelu 一德路站 metro stations. Yide Road itself is home to many wholesalers offering everything from electronics to dried seahorses and is an interesting place for window shopping, and the north embankment of the Pearl River is only a short walk away. #qingmingtravel #urbanexplorer #lightthecity #guangzhou #canton #gothic #guangdong #china #historicallandmarks #sightseeing

In Guangzhou? A visit to the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, 陈家祠, is a must. Dating originally to the late Qing Dynasty (though heavily restored in parts), the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall is one of the finest examples of Lingnan architecture and art. In addition to the building itself, richly ornamented with wood and stone carving and ceramic decorations, it is home to the Guangdong Folk Arts Museum, a small but excellently curated display of permanent and rotating exhibits including Chaozhou woodcarving, ceramics, ivory carving, embroidery, paper cutting and more. This is a place I always bring visitors to Guangzhou. Place: Chen Clan Ancestral Hall 陈家祠 Getting there: Metro Station Chen Clan Academy 地铁站陈家祠站 Admission: ¥10 (bring your ID) Recommended for: Tourists, locals, photography, history, architecture, art, culture. #qingmingtravel #urbanexplorer #lightthecity #lightthecityGuangzhou #guangzhou #guangzhouPhotoSpot #guangdong #lingnan #architecture #art #museum #culture #culturetrip #daytrip #staycation #china

Spring comes early in Guangzhou and peach and plum blossoms arrive, appropriately, with Spring Festival. I lived in Guangzhou for three years and I never saw the famous peach garden in Baiyun Mountain 白云山公园 in bloom until I returned for a visit this year. What a pleasant surprise! There were lots of people there but it didn't feel crowded as the peach garden is quite big. Normally access to this part of the park is included in the usual Baiyun Mountain entrance (5RMB) but during the peach blossom season another ticket is required (another 5 kuai); it's well worth the price of admission. In addition to the peach blossoms there are magnolias, bougainvillea and many others. Bring a camera or a picnic and spend a few hours under the pink and white blossoms. The peach grove is roughly in the middle of Baiyun Mountain Park so it will probably take most people an hour to walk there; the east gate near Meihuayuan Metro Station 梅花园地铁站 is the closest, I think (but has a steep stairs-only ascent; the west gate entrance is further but more gradual.) If you're not up to walking there it's possible to take the mini shuttle from the west gate or the top of the cable car. Some parts of the peach garden would not be accessible for those with mobility issues, but the main paths near the gate should be okay. Time: mid-February Cost: 10 yuan (5 for park entrance, 5 for garden entrance) Recommended for: Photographers, lovers, elders, families... #urbanexplorer #springblossoms #springblossomguangzhou #peachblossoms #plum #sakura #springtime #garden #guangzhou #photography #nofilter #广州 #白云山 #桃花 #梅花 #春天 #春节 #springfestivaltravel #staycation
