I expected a quiet satellite city, but what I found was a vibrant destination with an unexpected gem beneath the surface—Gwangmyeong Cave. Once a mine, the cave has been transformed into an incredible cultural complex. As I stepped inside, cool air wrapped around me, and colorful LED installations lit up the ancient rock. There were wine cellars, art exhibits, and even a mysterious golden dragon statue tucked into one of the caverns. It was surreal—and so beautifully done. My favorite part? The underground aquarium and the eerie silence punctuated only by dripping water. It felt like I had wandered into a sci-fi world. Outside the cave, I explored Gwangmyeong Eco Park, a green oasis filled with walking trails and eco-conscious design. Families picnicked under cherry blossoms, and the peaceful setting offered a breather from the bustle of the Seoul metro area. One evening, I wandered to Gwangmyeong Traditional Market and found sizzling street food stalls serving tteokbokki, hotteok, and spicy fish cakes. Locals were friendly, and the prices were surprisingly affordable compared to Seoul. Best Time to Visit: Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) offer mild weather, cherry blossoms or fall foliage, and fewer crowds inside the cave. Helpful Tips: Wear comfortable shoes—the cave involves a lot of walking and stairs. Combine your visit with nearby attractions in western Seoul like Yeouido or Anyang.
