The most happening cave in South Korea
Gwangmyeong Cave is definitely NOT your regular cave… it is a cave but it is somewhat also a themed park…
This cave was opened to the public since August 2011 but once upon a time back in 1912, it was called Siheung Mine…. Siheung Mine is known or rather was known to be the largest metal mine in the metropolitan area and produced gold, silver, bronze, zinc and other minerals for 60 years….
When the Korean War happened, the mine became a shelter for residents….
It was also used as a storage place for salted shrimps from Sorae Port from 1978-2010
The land was finally purchased by Gwangmyeong City in 2011 and transformed into a cave theme park, retaining its industrial heritage and cultural values, and opened to the public in 2011
Gwangmyeong Cave happens to be a oretty happening cave too, as it has hosted events from movie screenings, concerts, fashion shows and exhibitions at it’s premises
I love it here as the temperature here in the cave is permanently cool and there are also many in- cave attractions such as the Wormhole Square (light theme experiences in cave), Cave Underground World (underground passage that miners once carried the mined ore), Cave Underground Lake, Golden Road (road of ‘Long Life, Happiness and Peace’), Modern History Museum, Aqua Cave World on fishes - you can even find a live real Piranha in here!!!
There is even a 194m long Wine Cave where 170 types of wine from around South Korea are sold.
And you can have some wine tasting if you are there on Saturdays and Sundays at 12:00 to 16:00
