It is believed that it was built during the reign of Chao Anantayot, the son of Queen Chamadevi, when he came to establish Khelang Nakhon in 1223 CE. The name has changed over time: Wat Si Chom Klai, Wat Si Chiang Phum, Wat Don Kaeo, Wat Phayao. It is believed that it was changed to Wat Pong Sanuk after the locals of Pong Sanuk, Chiang Saen, who were rounded up and settled in this area. Wat Pong Sanuk was also the place where the first Inthakhil pillar (city pillar) was buried in 1857 CE before it was brought to the Lampang City Pillar Shrine. 🌄An important place in the temple is the mountain called Wat Bon, which is like the Mount Sumeru, the center of the universe. It is the location of the Phra Chao Phan Ong Shrine. 🏰Phra Chao Phan Ong Shrine is a temple that received the Award of Merit for Cultural Heritage Conservation in the Asia-Pacific region from UNESCO in 2008. It is a wooden temple with ancient architecture. The only remaining one in Thailand. The building is a beautiful combination of Thai, Chinese and Burmese paintings and architecture. It was used as a model for Ho Kham, Mae Fah Luang Farm, Chiang Rai. The temple is an open pavilion. In the center are four Buddha statues. Each Buddha's face faces the four directions. The roof has three layers and is beautifully decorated. The square pillars supporting the temple are also intricately decorated. On the top and inside of the temple are 1,080 small Buddha images. This is the origin of the name of the thousand-image temple. 🏰In addition, there is Phra That Si Chom Klai, the reclining Buddha temple, the stairs and the Khong gate arch, which are considered ancient architecture.
