Northern Caucasus Journey (Part 1): Bermamyt Plateau

Northern Caucasus Journey (Part 1): Bermamyt Plateau The Bermamyt Plateau is located in the Karachay-Cherkess Republic of Russia's North Caucasus region, about 30 kilometers from Kislovodsk (also known as "Sour Water City"). It forms part of the Greater Caucasus Mountain Range. "Bermamyt" translates directly to "bent knee," a fitting name as the area is filled with steep cliffs and bizarre canyons. In the era before cars, reaching this place would have been incredibly taxing on the knees, making it one of the most challenging scenic spots to access in the Caucasus. It's best visited by off-road vehicle, as the final few kilometers to the plateau are bumpy and especially muddy after rain. With a maximum elevation of 2,592 meters, the plateau offers panoramic views of Mount Elbrus, the highest peak in the Greater Caucasus. The vegetation here consists mainly of alpine meadows, and the vast plateau is sparsely inhabited by herders who live in near isolation, tending their livestock. Bermamyt Plateau is tied to a touching myth. Legend tells of a duel between the mountain god Elbrus and Mashuk for the love of a maiden. When Elbrus was defeated and fell, his loyal dog, Bermamyt, refused to leave his master and lay down at his feet, never to rise again. Over time, Elbrus's body transformed into a towering mountain, while Bermamyt became a plateau, forever resting at his master's feet. Thus, the plateau is also known as "Elbrus's Faithful Hound." The most famous attraction here is a natural cliff that drops at a perfect 90-degree angle, as if cleaved by a giant axe. A small ledge juts out from the cliff face like a nail hammered into a wall. One of these ledges is connected to the main cliff by a relatively flat stone path, allowing visitors to cross this "tightrope" and climb to the highest point for photos. While the cliffs provide dramatic backdrops for thrilling shots, safety should always come first—never take unnecessary risks. Known as the "Grand Canyon of Russia" for its sheer cliffs and majestic landscapes, Bermamyt Plateau is an ideal spot to witness the sunrise and sunset over the Caucasus Mountains. It's also popular among paragliders, campers, and hikers.
