Gankeng Ancient Town, formerly the Gankeng Hakka Town, is located at No. 18, Ganli Road, Gankeng Community, Jihua Street, Longgang District, Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province. Gankeng is an ancient Hakka village with a long history and is one of the “Top Ten Hakka Ancient Villages in Shenzhen”. In Shenzhen's local Hakka language, "keng" refers to a small stream or ditch. Hakka people often use "keng" and "li" together, and there is a term "keng keng lili". Gankeng is full of springs and the stream water is sweet, so it is called Gankeng. Gankeng Ancient Town was once a Hakka settlement with many ancient buildings and interconnected alleys. There is the Nanxiang Tower which has gone through more than 120 years of vicissitudes; there is the Zhuangyuan Mansion built during the Yongzheng period; there is the Fenghuang Valley, a group of Hui-style buildings; there are also watchtowers, blockhouses, stilt houses and other buildings integrated into the mountains and rivers, forming a unique carrier of Hakka culture together with the century-old Hakka townhouses. Gankeng Ancient Town is an important window for understanding the culture of Shenzhen’s indigenous people. The ancient town is not big, suitable for walking around and sightseeing in your spare time, which can also help us better understand Hakka culture.
