Opening hours: 7:30 AM–6:30 PM Scenic area ticket: 38 yuan for adults Transportation: self-driving, taxi 🌈 We drove from Duolun County, navigating to the Duolun Lake Scenic Area Visitor Center. Note: tickets can be purchased on-site at the visitor center, and online tickets must be exchanged here before entering the scenic area. There are two entrances, east and west. The lake loop is 40 km and accessible by car. We entered from the east entrance. 🌈 The total area of Duolun Lake Scenic Area is 29 square kilometers, with a water area of 20,000 mu (13.3 square kilometers). The main area consists of seven connected lakes, forming two lake centers, three peninsulas, and one sandy peninsula. Duolun County in Inner Mongolia is home to a significant historical building, Huizong Temple. Huizong Temple is currently a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level, grand in scale, magnificent, and very beautiful. Huizong Temple is located north of Duolun County in Xilin Gol League, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. It is named for its azure glazed tile roof. In Mongolian, it is called "Huhe Sumu," meaning "Blue Temple." It was built earlier than Shanyin Temple and is located to its east, so it is also known as the Old Temple or East Temple. Huizong Temple is a famous Tibetan Buddhist Gelug school temple in Inner Mongolia, also commonly known as a Yellow Hat sect temple. Because it is located east of the later-built "Shanyin Temple," it is also popularly called "Dongdacang." [Cute] In the 29th year of Emperor Kangxi's reign (1690), Emperor Kangxi personally led hundreds of thousands of troops to defeat the rebellion of Galdan, leader of the Mongolian Dzungar tribe, at Ulan Butong, north of Duolun. The following year, an alliance was formed on the Duolun Nuoer Grassland with the three tribes of Outer Mongolia and 48 princes of Inner Mongolia. During this time, at the request of the Mongolian princes, a magnificent Lama temple was built in this area, described as "flat plains, clear springs, close to the sky, and abundant pastures," to commemorate the event. The temple complex includes a spirit screen, a main gate, bell and drum towers, the Hall of Heavenly Kings, a Sutra Repository, ten Buddha storehouses, and five official storehouses. The main hall is 15 meters high, featuring a double-eaved hip-and-gable roof covered with azure glazed tiles and a rolling dragon ridge design. Inside, various Buddha statues display different expressions. The two secondary halls feature double-slope hard-gable roofs, are three bays wide and one bay deep, with arched brick-carved doors and windows. The main hall of Changkyia Khutukhtu's storehouse is second only to the main hall of Huizong Temple in architectural scale. It is primarily a brick-and-wood structure with a double-eaved hip-and-gable roof. The lower level is seven bays wide and five bays deep, while the upper level is five bays wide and three bays deep, with lavish interior decoration. Huizong Temple is located in Duolun County, Xilingol League, Inner Mongolia. Facing south, it is a large-scale and highly significant Tibetan Gelugpa monastery. Emperor Kangxi personally led a campaign to suppress the northern Mongol rebel Galdan. On the vast grasslands, he invited various Inner and Outer Mongolian tribes to hold an alliance meeting, marking the Qing government’s official rule over Outer Mongolia (which unfortunately became independent under the Kuomintang). This event is historically known as the Duolun alliance. After the alliance, at the request of Mongolian princes, the emperor agreed to “build a temple to commemorate the grand event” and began allocating huge funds to build the temple modeled after the Forbidden City. Huizong Temple was built on the original site of the alliance tent. It consists of a plaza, mountain gate, Hall of Heavenly Kings, Hall of the Eight Great Bodhisattvas, Vajra Hall, Mahavira Hall, and multiple living quarters for incarnate lamas. It blends Mongolian, Manchu, Tibetan, and Han architectural styles. The exterior is solemn and magnificent, while the interior is richly decorated. It is the highest-ranking Buddhist temple on the Mongolian Plateau. The alliance monument on the plaza is a round column with double ears, set on a square Sumeru base. It is carved entirely from white marble. The base is inscribed in both Mongolian and Chinese with “Duolun Nor Alliance.” The column is covered with Tibetan Buddhist dharma wheels and scroll patterns. The main hall of Huizong Temple is a wooden structure with a double-eaved hip-and-gable roof and a front porch. The hall has two floors, supported by 20 beams, symbolizing the revered number 81. It is spacious and bright. The roof is covered with blue-glazed tiles, which is said to be the origin of the temple’s name. The temple’s name plaque was inscribed by Emperor Kangxi himself. As a royal temple, it housed the most incarnate lamas and held the greatest religious authority. Unfortunately, most of the buildings were destroyed during the Cultural Revolution.
