The Duolun Shanxi Guild Hall is the largest and best-preserved complex of Qing Dynasty Shanxi merchant guild hall buildings in Inner Mongolia. First built in the 10th year of the Qianlong reign (1745), it was an important venue for Shanxi merchants in Duolun to gather, discuss business, and enjoy entertainment. It witnessed the history of the Great Tea Road, Zou Xikou, and the Shanxi merchants traveling to Mongolia, and is known as the "commercial port beyond the Great Wall." In 2006, it was listed as a National Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit (the sixth batch). The guild hall was funded and built by merchants from Shanxi. Originally named Fumo Palace, it is also known as the Guandi Temple. It consists of four courtyards, including the main gate, the grand theater, the bell and drum towers, the main hall, side halls, and east and west corridors. 🌈 Highlights: ✅ The architecture centers on the Shanxi style, facing south and arranged along a central axis. About half of the original scale remains. These are ancient brick and wood structures with exquisite brick and wood carvings, making it a rare "living fossil" of Qing Dynasty Shanxi merchant architecture on the grasslands. 👍 Must-see architecture: 1️⃣ Grand Theater/Shuijingtai: Built entirely of square stone blocks, it is "convex" in shape. It was first built in 1753 (the 18th year of the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty) and was expanded into the Thirteen Aobaos 10 years after the completion of Beizi Temple. 💙 9 is the most sacred and auspicious number for the Mongolian people, representing eternity, vastness, and the Eternal Blue Sky. Erdun Aobao has a total of 171 steps, designed with a "layer upon layer" approach to symbolize supremacy, longevity, and perfection. First, 1 + 7 + 1 = 9; no matter how you calculate it from start to finish, it equals 9. Furthermore, 171 = 19 * 9. "Nine nines return to one" already signifies supreme perfection, and multiplying it by 19 amplifies the auspicious meaning of 9, creating 19 nines to emphasize the highest respect for the Eternal Blue Sky. 💙 The thirteen Aobaos at the top of the hill are lined up, with the largest in the center and the others arranged symmetrically on both sides. The large central Aobao is called "Haorimust Tengger" in Mongolian. It is the head of the thirteen Aobaos, representing the Buddha and the Eternal Blue Sky, signifying dominion over heaven and earth and symbolizing the highest sacred power. In Mongolian culture, 13 represents "completeness, perfection, and holiness" and is often used in rituals. This is because 13 = 1 (Heaven/Buddha) + 3 (Temple) + 9 (Land), representing the complete protection of the trinity of heaven and earth, the temple, and the entire banner. 💙 During the ritual, first circle the large central Aobao, then circle the 13 Aobaos in order clockwise 3 times each, for a total of 39 circles. You can offer Hada, milk wine, stones, candy, and more, praying for favorable weather, prosperous livestock, and long-lasting stability. 💙 There is a stall on the east side of the Aobao that rents out Mongolian costumes, including headwear, robes, and belts. Makeup and photography are not included. A set of clothes costs about 20–30 RMB for half an hour of self-service photography. The stall owner is a sturdy, tough old man with a bit of a temper. If you don't tie up your hair when wearing the headwear, he will argue with you about the requirements for Mongolian attire. He cherishes and loves his ethnic culture very much. It's really great 👍
