Kelimutu Crater Lakes
When you arrive at Lake Kelimutu, you will be presented with views of cliffs from steep rocks. You will also be surprised by the figure of the cliff guard. A mob of brown-haired guard monkeys suddenly appeared from tree branches on the edge of the cliff. You do not need to linger over steep cliffs because it can jeopardize safety.
After you walk-up through few stairs of stones, you can see two of the three lakes in the Kelimutu region. The two lakes are “Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai” and “Tiwu Ata Polo”, the lake on the right when the body position is facing the lake. This lake is deep black. While the lake on the left and the tosca green is Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai. These two lakes are located side by side, only separated by a cliff as the dividing wall. The separating rock cliffs are basin shaped. As far as the eye can see, around the lake there are only cliffs of rocks.
The journey to the top of Kelimutu is very tiring. In addition to the fairly steep path, the air on the way to the peak is getting thinner because of its height. To unwind you can rest for a moment in the peak monument of Kelimutu. You could say after seeing the third lake, the monument surrounded by several steps is the next destination. Besides being able to sit and chat on the steps, capture photos, you can enjoy a cup of warm coffee, a perfect dish from the nature.

Kelimutu Lake
Kelimutu lakes (Part of Kelimutu National Park) are one of the most beautiful sights in Indonesia and one of the reasons why I would recommend you to spend some time on Flores rather than only staying around the Komodo Islands. The national park itself is well-known by many for its 3 forever-shifting tri-colored volcanic lakes that are situated 1,639 m above sea-level on top of a mountain.
Kelimutu lakes are located in the eastern part of Flores island and there are 2 cities with airports you can fly into, Ende and Maumere. Ende is a little closer and so I would recommend you start your journey to Kelimutu from there.
Go at surise so that you are likely to have a clear sky. The clouds often rolled in in the afternoon so you are less likely to have a nice view then. Wait until the sun shines on the lakes before you leave because the colors of the lakes are most vibrant when the sun is higher up in the sky. Plus, there will be considerably less people now.

Colored lakes at the peak of a volcano
Kelimutu is a volcano in central Flores, Indonesia, near the small town of Moni. It's about 50 kilometers east of Ende, Indonesia, which serves as the capital of the Ende regency in East Nusa Tenggara province. It features three different colored volcanic crater lakes.
The three colored lakes at the peak of Mount Kelimutu are undoubtedly Flores' most beautiful natural attraction. Each of the three lakes has a distinct color, ranging from blue and green to murky brown and black, depending on the season and time of year. The 20-kilometer journey is well worth it just to see these three magnificent lakes. You can alternatively take public transportation to a parking lot and walk to the lakes for a 30-minute trek.

Riung 17 Island Marine Park Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
Riung Marine Park
Riung is a small fishing village with a handful of humble cottages and home stay options available. Don’t expect much as facilities are limited.
I stayed at Zon Pelo which you cannot miss as it’s right on the pier – I’m talking front row seats! A nights stay will cost 150 000 IDR ($11) for a double room and cold showers.
I was on the fence as to whether I should go to Riung or not. I had the time and I’m so glad I went for it.
The highlight for me wasn’t the island hopping around 17 Islands Marine Park, but the other travelers we met along the route. Because Riung is off the tourist path, there are few backpackers and you will most likely run into everyone in town.
Riung is a remote community so if you’re looking for undiscovered island life make sure you don’t give it a skip.

17 Islands
Visiting 17 Islands Marine Park in Riung, Flores was a last-minute decision spurred on by a group of equally adventurous travelers.
Riung is well off the tourist track and is must do if you have the time (and patience) to explore this hidden gem on Flores Island in Indonesia.
The village of Riung does not have a beach and you’ll need to hop on a small boat to reach the turquoise waters. These islands are all located near each other, so you don’t spend hours boating between them. Most itineraries take you on a full day island hopping tour. You’ll explore 4 or 5 spots including Bat Island, Rutong Island (with the viewpoint), Tembang Island and Tiga Island.
Along the way, you’ll stop off at a few shallow reefs which offer great snorkeling opportunities. Lunch is a delicious fish BBQ prepared right on the water’s edge and at 4pm the boat will make its way back to Riung pier.
The boats in Riung aren’t overcrowded and the beaches are empty. This was the main attraction for me and the reason I decided to go island hopping in Riung.

Kelimutu Lake (Tri-Color Lake) Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
Kelimutu National Park, East Nusa Tenggara
#wecreate
Kelimutu volcano is located 50 km east of Ende, central Flores on a road that climbs through several small villages and rice terraces into a dense rainforest near the summit. The volcano is in a national park, and there is a fee to enter: not much for locals and foreign Indonesian work visa holders, and more for tourists (about US$15). From a parking area a few hiking trails go up to the summit, which features 3 steep-sided craters with actively roiling multi-colored lakes. On a clear day you can see gases bubbling to the surface and a sulfide scum on the surface of the first two lakes. The local lake names are Tiwu Ata Bupu (Lake of Old People - blue), and the other two lakes, Tiwu Ko'o Fai Nuwa Muri (Lake of Young Men and Maidens - bluish-green) and Tiwu Ata Polo ("Villany" Lake - red) are separated by a shared crater wall.

Kelimutu Crater Lakes Ecolodge Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
Mt Kelimutu National Park at Indonesia is the smallest among six national parks in the stretch between Bali and the Nusa Tenggara islands. Its size obviously does not matter much when it offers one of the most spectacular wonders that nature has to offer. There are three lakes on the mountain sharing the same name, Kelimutu, meaning ‘the boiling lake’. Each has its own colors and a local name. But all are believed to be the resting place of departed souls.
