Place to go if you want lazy vacation. Relax near sea. Beautiful beach. Long and clean. Clean water. Can rent sun umbrella and lounger or just buy it in local supermarket. A lot of boat trips. Can go and see Itaka - place of born of Odyssey. Or just go to nice beaches. Scala is a small village. A lot of cafes and restaurants. Traditional greek food. Good and tasty. A lot if shops with souvenirs. Excellent money vs value choice. Definitely recommend to visit this place.

Old Valsamata, near St Gerasimos Monastery, Kefalonia Island ❤️ A once prosperous settlement which was badly damaged in the 1953 earthquake then abandoned by the inhabitants, leaving a ghost village which is absolutely amazing, tranquil, atmospheric, and a little spooky but absolutely worth a visit. Children must be supervised at all times as some of the buildings are unsafe and there are numerous deep and sometimes open areas. A truly unforgettable experience, please have a look at the photos, there are quite a few. It’s great to visit anytime especially the old school#greekhistory #Earthquake village 🇬🇷 🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷

#beachcheck Just returned from a stunning day at Alaties Beach in Kefalonia! The crystal-clear waters and rugged coastline make this spot a true gem. Entrance is free, which is a fantastic bonus! 🌊 The beach is somewhat secluded, so it's perfect for those seeking tranquility away from the crowds. Nearby, you can explore the charming village of Agia Effimia or take a boat tour to discover hidden coves and caves. Make sure to bring a picnic; there are no restaurants right on the beach. Overall, Alaties Beach was a serene escape and a highlight of my summer vacation! 🏖️ #trip #localguides #Kefalonia #BeachVibes #TravelDiaries #HiddenGems

Mountainous Kefalonia, the largest of the Ionian group of islands, is a justifiably popular beach holiday destination. Although the island is dominated by Mount Ainos, and pine-clad hills that run down to the sea, it’s the sandy beach coves lapped by the turquoise waters that draw the most visitors. The best way to enjoy the top beaches on Kefallonia is to book your accommodation so that some of the many enchanting beaches are within easy reach. If you arrive by ferry at the capital, Argostoli, head south for the nearby beaches of Makris Gialos and Platis Gialos, which end at the tiny islet of Tourkopodaro. Makris Gialos has an area of sun lounges ideal for soaking up the sun, but there is jetski hire if you feel like being more active. The smaller Platis Gialos is quieter and less developed than its neighbour. Both beaches have bars and you will find a choice of excellent villa accommodation at nearby Lassi. Just a few kilometres further south, the tavernas and fine red sand bring visitors to Avithos. Naturists will find a clothing optional beach at adjoining Ligia. From the shore, you’ll see the tiny islet of Dias with its small church. It’s possible to take a short boat trip to the island and, depending on the season, the beaches could be deserted. The nearby village of Svoronata offers villa lodgings, tavernas and cafes. Backed by steep, white cliffs, the isolated beach at nearby Spartia is less developed and there is good accommodation. #decembertravel

Just back from the western shore of Kefalonia – this is the Ionian paradise you need in your life! 😍 Between unreal beaches, insanely fresh Greek food, and the friendliest locals, this trip is what travel dreams are made of. Top Spots to Visit on Kefalonia’s Western Shore: 1. Petani Beach: White pebbles, turquoise water, epic sunsets—Petani is a vibe. Come early or late for fewer crowds (sunset here is iconic). There’s parking up top and laid-back tavernas serving local seafood. 2. Xi Beach: Red sand! Wild, right? Xi is perfect for a chill afternoon swim; shallow water, family-friendly, with beach bars for your frappe fix. 3. Lixouri Town: Kefalonia’s little capital on the west, full of pastel streets and coffee culture. Pop into a bakery for spinach pies you’ll dream about later (try Mavroidis Patisserie, main square). 4. Vatsa Bay: Totally unspoiled—just a beach, a chilled riverside taverna (Spiros Taverna), and the sea. Great for pure relaxation and fresh grilled fish. 5. Kounopetra: Weird rock formation near the coast that used to "move" (true story!)—but really, it’s a peaceful picnic spot. Local insight: The food here blew my mind—order whatever’s fresh, especially cheese pies, grilled sardines, and honey-soaked desserts. People go out of their way to make you feel welcome—don’t be shy about striking up a chat! Getting Around: Renting a car is a gamechanger. The west is wilder and way less busy—public buses can be sporadic. Gas stations: top up in Lixouri before you cruise. Quick tips: · Pack a beach mat, most beaches are pebbly. · ATMs only in bigger towns, bring some cash. · Sunscreen! The Kefalonian sun hits different. #KefaloniaTrip #GreekIslands #IonianSea #TravelTips #BeachVibes

Whoa, get ready to be dazzled! Kefalonia is not just another spot on the Greek map – it’s a total vibe. This gorgeous island sits on a cute little peninsula on the northwest coast of Kefalonia, just a short drive from the legendary Myrtos Beach (address: Myrtos Beach Rd, Kefalonia, 28100, Greece; hours: Open daily, sunrise to sunset). The villages here are like something out of a fairytale, with pastel-colored houses stacked along winding lanes, a chill little harbor perfect for sipping coffee, and lush green hills that'll make your Insta pop! 🏡🌿 History buffs, don’t miss the epic ruins of a 16th-century Venetian castle perched on the hill above the village. Wander up and snap some pics – the castle’s old walls and sweeping views are seriously next-level! 🏰✨ But the real showstopper? The bay itself, shining with the brightest turquoise and azure water you’ve ever seen. Dip your toes, take a boat out (just check Trip.com for local tours!), or chill on the pebbly beach and let those Mediterranean vibes totally wash over you. 🌊💙 Trust me, Kefalonia is sooo good for a weekend getaway or a longer adventure. Whether you're here for the history, the scenery, or just to soak in that dreamy water, this island delivers big time!

If you’re a fan of The Odyssey, there’s something incredible about Ithaca: it isn’t a fictional place. 📍 Ithaki, Greece is a real island in the Ionian Sea — and it has been associated with Odysseus for thousands of years. According to Homer, Ithaca was the home of Odysseus, the legendary king who spent years trying to return there after the Trojan War. But here’s where things get interesting… 🏛️ Is modern Ithaki actually Homer’s Ithaca? Most people simply assume the answer is yes. But archaeologists and historians have debated this for centuries. Modern Ithaki is a relatively small, mountainous island with deep bays, rugged hills and a long maritime tradition. Its geography does fit surprisingly well with some of Homer’s descriptions. But there’s a problem: the exact location of Homer’s Ithaca has never been proven. Some researchers have proposed that the Ithaca described in the epic could have been another island in the Ionian region, including nearby Kefalonia. So when you visit Ithaki today, you’re not necessarily standing on a location that archaeology can definitively label “Odysseus’ palace.” You’re visiting a place that has carried the name and legend of Ithaca for generations. ⚔️ What can you see there today? Ithaki is much more than a literary connection. 🏛️ Archaeological sites — remains from different periods of the island’s history can be explored. 🌊 Vathy — the island’s main settlement, built around a beautiful natural harbor. ⛰️ Rugged mountains and hills — perfect for understanding why ancient sailors would have viewed Ithaca as a distinctive island. 🏖️ Quiet coves and beaches — many are accessible by boat or hiking trails. 🛕 Monasteries and small villages — adding another layer of history beyond the Homeric story. And then there’s the most fascinating part: You can stand on the island, look across the same Ionian waters, and imagine why Homer chose Ithaca as the ultimate destination of Odysseus’ journey. After years of war, storms, monsters and wandering, the hero wasn’t searching for treasure. He was trying to get home. 📌 Save this for a future Greece trip: Ithaki is one of those destinations where mythology, archaeology and real landscapes overlap — even if we still can’t say with absolute certainty that it is the exact Ithaca Homer had in mind. Would you visit the island of Odysseus? 🏛️🌊

#worthitomot #Cephalonia #Myrtos #Assos I drove from Argostoli to Myrtos at 9 am (rental car €38/day, petrol €1.75/L, no parking fee at the upper lookout but €5 to drive down to the beach lot). Myrtos is a 1 km arc of pulverised white shell-sand between two headlands, water a violent turquoise because of the limestone flour. The beach is free, the descent road is 17 hairpins—don’t attempt in a bus. Spent 90 minutes, then drove 40 min north to Assos, parked free at the village entrance, walked 10 min down to the isthmus: a sandbar joining the cypress-covered headland where a 16th-century Venetian castle sits. Assos has two tavernas (€9 moussaka, card ok), no entry fee to the village or isthmus. Mistake: I did Myrtos at noon first—no shade, the reflected light off white pebbles burns; 9 am or 5 pm. Second mistake: swimming at Myrtos in wind—rips form fast, red flag ignored by tourists = lifeguard whistle. Worth it? Yes: two of Greece’s most photographed spots, both free, for the price of fuel and a sandwich. Myrtos is better from above; Assos is better from the water. Question: is the famous Myrtos overrated because the sand is coarse and the rip dangerous, or does the color alone justify the hype?

After visiting the nearby Church of Santa Croce (see reviews), I returned yesterday afternoon to revisit this monument and pay tribute to the victims of Nazi brutality. The monument honors the sacrifice of the Italian soldiers and officers of the Acqui Division stationed on the Greek island of Cephalonia. Following the armistice of September 8, 1943, they refused to surrender to the Germans. After a desperate struggle with minimal help from the new Allies, they were massacred in violation of any international codes. The monument features a slab depicting the profile of the Greek island. In front of it lies a stone from one of the cemeteries where the martyrs rest, which yesterday was nearly hidden under flowers. A stark reminder to never forget these horrors!

Where dramatic cliffs drop into impossibly blue water and every view feels like a painting you can walk into. 🌊⛰️ From hidden coves and sunlit beaches to winding coastal roads with endless sea views, Kefalonia is pure Ionian magic — calm, wild, and unforgettable all at once. #Kefalonia #Greece #IonianIslands #BeachLife #IslandVibes #Mediterranean #TravelPhotography #Wanderlust #HiddenGems #TouristKungFu #kungfutourist ✈️📸

Anyone with a pet at home knows the feeling: you travel while already planning the day you'll be back. Since I can't bear being away from my four-legged companion for long, I put together a very concise five-day itinerary for Greece, focusing solely on the Ionian Islands. No rushing around to tick off a list of tourist landmarks—just some time to breathe, observe, and do a bit of sketching in my notebook. My first stop was Zakynthos. The sea there is a shade of blue I was certain only existed in a palette of gouache paints. I visited the famous Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach from the top of the cliffs. It's breathtaking in an almost surreal way, but what truly resonated with me was a simple moment: on the way, I saw two local dogs playing by the water's edge, completely indifferent to the crowds of tourists. I felt a sudden, sharp pang of homesickness, but it was one of those spontaneous moments that makes a journey truly beautiful. Afterward, I took a boat to Kefalonia, which is much quieter and less crowded. It was exactly what I needed. I spent an afternoon rowing through the Melissani underground lake. Sunlight streams through a breach in the rock, creating a dance of shadows on the water that left me mesmerized. I spent quite a while there trying to capture that shifting gradient of light in my sketchbook. For anyone who, like me, prefers slower, shorter trips, these two islands offer the perfect escape. I didn't need to race through all eight famous islands on the map to feel like the trip was worth it. Now, it’s time to head back to São Paulo—there’s a little wet nose waiting for me anxiously behind the door.

#kefalonia #beachlife #Alaties #Dogs Alaties is one of the smallest and prettiest beaches in the north of Kefalonia Greece. Like a tiny swimming pool hewn out of the rock and with a small pebbly beach. The scenery is one of the most beautiful on the island: the cliff, the small pebble cove, the blue sea, the walkway leading to the beach, all beautiful. Spaces are limited, but if there is no room in the cove you can stand on the steps in the shade of the trees. There is a nice restaurant just above. Parking along the street St Jerusalem Beach Further along the coastline from Alaties Beach you will come across St Jerusalem Beach. Beautiful clear waters and very secluded beach, but very rocky. · You may need to wear water shoes for the pebbles. *Get there early if you want beds and an umbrella. · Great taverna on the beach

#travel #Greek #natural_of_miracle #Greek tortoise TORTOISES ON KEFALONIA There are 3 species of tortoise living wild in Europe. The largest is the Marginated tortoise, growing up to 400mm in length. There is also the Spur-thighed tortoise, this is a little smaller at 300mm maximum length. The third and smallest is Hermann's tortoise, which can achieve 250mm in length and is the only species present on Kefalonia HERMANN'S AND MARGINATED TORTOISES This wonderful tortoise is the only wild tortoise on Kefalonia. Their high domed shell or carapace can be up to 250mm in length and can be a variety of colours. The carapace can be yellow, ochre, beige or pale orange with extensive black markings. The hatchlings have fewer contrasting markings which develop into the adult colouring after their second year. Mating takes place in spring and summer and females can lay up to 3 clutches of 8 eggs throughout this period. The little ones emerge in September. I look after the tortoises and have many hatchlings every year. These tortoises will be realised back on the island in the National park 🏞️ Mount Anios #Herman tortoise

#Frenchies #travel#Dog walks-Kefalonia 💞Reasons to Recommend: A fabulous walk starting from the Lighthouse at the Fanari. Walk past the red villa (Rosa) and carry on walking on the road until you see the walking trail signs on your right. Follow the trails along the coastal path to see the sea caves, maybe the Monk 🦭 seals and just stunning pine trees. You will need sturdy shoes and water for both yourself and your dog 🐕. My dogs were fine off the lead but take them just in case you come across any goats 🐐. Bring some refreshments do you can sit at one of the many hidden coves. Lots of areas to swim and snorkel.

Eglina Beach is located 6 km south of Argostoli, on the southwestern coast of Kefalonia. It is a sheltered bay with gradually sloping beach that stretches for 100 meters. It is ideal for children to play and is perfect for a relaxed stay and a refreshing dive. The rocks outcrops scattered around the cove, make it an ideal spot for snorkeling. There is no water sport center, but it is an organized beach with a beach bar, sun beds and umbrellas. To get to Eglina, you pass through Minies village, an area which is somewhat developed but it offers the basic facilities. Situated next to the runway it’s fascinating to see the planes land and take off. Tips · bring a picnic · take some talcum powder to help remove the sand from your feet before driving back · check out the planes

A variety of natural and local plants and trees growing in Karavados, Greece. Olive trees are scattered all over the island and just stunning blue skies. Karavados is a village located South of the island and is located well near the airport and local beaches. It’s a 20 minute drive to the Capital Argostoli where there are an abundance of taverns and shops. Beautiful views of the sea and mountains. #Karavados #kefalonia #home #greek

If you are lucky to visit the beautiful Greek Island of Kefalonia, be sure to drive up to Mount Anios. The mountain is a national park where there are wild horses and the famous black pine. Take a drive up there and explore the many walks up at the peak. A great location for sunset and sun rise #greekcharm #travel #Mount Anios #thingstodo #kefalonia

Come and sea the famous sea turtles (loggerhead) in Kefalonia. The loggerhead turtles live all year in the harbour in Argostoli the capital. I was lucky enough to go swimming in St Thomas beach and saw this amazing turtle. There is a charity that work with the turtles and never try to feed or touch the turtles. #kefalonia #seaturtle

Farewell to the summer crowds! In Zakynthos during winter, we found the gateway to adventure and mythology. When the plane landed in Zakynthos, the moist sea breeze carried the scent of pine and olives. Our winter family adventure transformed from searching for the filming locations of "Descendants of the Sun" into an immersion in the island’s myths and nature. Shipwreck Bay was the highlight, but far from the whole story. Here, every day held new discoveries for the kids. 🗺️ Family-friendly map beyond Shipwreck Bay: Natural Wonders Route: Shipwreck Bay (Navagio) → Blue Caves → Keri Sea Caves. This route is a magical lesson about "water and light." Ecological Conservation Route: Laganas Beach → Marine Turtle Rescue Centre. Winter is a great time to observe and protect endangered loggerhead turtles, making it educational. History and Culture Route: Zakynthos Town (Bohali) → Venetian Castle Ruins → St. Dionysios Church. Learn about the island’s history and its patron saint stories. Gastronomic Flavors Route: Local tavernas → Olive oil workshop visit → Tasting Mandraki honey and Sfougato cheese pie. 🚗 Detailed island self-driving and activity arrangements: Car Rental Tips: Winter is the off-season for car rentals, so prices are reasonable. It’s recommended to choose an SUV, as some mountain roads are steep. A Chinese driver’s license with a translation is sufficient. Sample One-Day Itinerary: Morning: Drive to Xigia Beach in the north of the island, where the water has a milky blue tint due to sulfur content, which is gentle on the skin. Noon: Have lunch at a restaurant by Makris Gialos Beach, enjoying freshly grilled fish. Afternoon: Drive up to Bohali Hill to overlook the panoramic view of Zakynthos Town and explore the Venetian castle ruins on the summit. Evening: Return to the hotel or take a stroll in the town square. Sea Excursion Options: Besides the usual Shipwreck Bay boat tours, inquire about small eco-tours to Marathonisi Island, which are better suited for families who prefer quiet. 🍽️ Greek flavors that kids will love too: Must-try dishes: Moussaka (meat and eggplant casserole), Souvlaki (grilled meat skewers), Gemista (stuffed tomatoes or peppers). Most restaurants offer simple kids’ menus. Hidden Delicacies: Bourdeto (Zakynthos’ spicy fish stew), which can be requested mild or non-spicy. Pastitsada (red wine beef stew with pasta). Sweet Finish: Galaktoboureko (custard pie) and Loukoumades (Greek doughnuts) — no child can resist. 🛏️ Family accommodations with different styles: Casa Playa Suites & Spa: Located on Tsilivi Beach, modern design, all suites have kitchens or kitchenettes, convenient for families to prepare simple meals. The pool area is child-friendly. Contessina Suites & Spa: In the quiet Alykes area, a garden-style hotel with cozy room decor. Bicycle rentals are available for easy exploration of nearby salt flats and beaches. The Bay Hotel & Suites: Located in Argassi, with direct beach access. Some suites have sea view terraces and jacuzzis, ideal for families seeking a high-quality vacation experience. 🎒 Core packing list for winter family trips: Windproof and waterproof jacket: A high-quality shell or softshell jacket is essential for the variable sea weather. Comfortable footwear: A pair of non-slip sneakers for hiking viewpoints, and beach shoes or Crocs for boarding boats and beach use. Entertainment items: For long drives or waiting times, bring portable picture books, drawing supplies, or travel board games. Essential medicines: Pharmacies in Europe are convenient, but it’s best to bring children’s fever reducers, motion sickness pills, and stomach medicine. In the winter sunshine of Zakynthos, time seemed to slow down. We no longer chased tourist spots but strolled through olive groves, stacked stones by the sea, and listened to locals tell shipwreck stories. This slow-paced, discovery-filled journey is the best nourishment for family bonds.

Great one bedroom house in the traditional village of Keramies on Kefalonia

#falladventures a great beach that’s next to the runway in Kefalonia. I love the beach due to its shallow waters and sand. Out of season it’s great to take my dogs for a run and a swim. This beach has a beach bar and sun beds during the summer season making it ideal for families. You also get to see and hear the planes land or take off overhead. A nice hidden beach mainly used by locals

#mediterranean The lighthouse of Saint Theodoroi in Kefalonia lies on an artificial peninsula close to Argostoli, the island's capital. It is a white, circular structure made up of 20 columns, and its tower is 8 meters tall. The building has a rather simple architectural design reminiscent of the Doric style, and it shines white light that reaches five miles. It showcases a unique layout, as it comprises an older windmill enclosed by pillars without featuring a room for a lighthouse keeper. It got its name from the chapel of Saint Theodoroi, which lies nearby. The entrance is free and it is so beautiful to walk along. #greece #kefalonia
