Midi-Pyrenees travel guide and discussion

Stepping into Gavarnie feels like entering a colossal mountain sanctuary carved by ancient glaciers at the very edge of the Pyrenees. Tucked away deep within a protected national park in the Hautes-Pyrénées, this legendary village sits at the foot of one of the world's most breathtaking geological wonders: the Cirque de Gavarnie. Strolling along the rushing river path as massive limestone walls tower overhead, crowned by towering waterfalls and lingering snow patches, was an awe-inspiring and deeply soul-stirring alpine adventure. 💧🏔️ . 📅 What I experienced · Trekking to the Cirque de Gavarnie: Walking the classic, gentle trail from the village up into the heart of the massive natural limestone amphitheater, standing in awe before the towering Gavarnie Falls, one of the highest waterfalls in Europe. · Exploring the Pyrenean Village: Wandering through the charming stone-built mountain village, discovering traditional slate-roofed houses, local artisan shops, and cozy inns welcoming hikers returning from the trails. · Hiking the High Ridges: Venturing further up toward the Hourquette d'Alans or the Port de Boucharo to take in sweeping, dramatic panoramic views stretching across both the French and Spanish borders. . 🏨 Where I stayed · I stayed in a cozy, traditional stone guesthouse nestled right in the heart of the mountain village. Waking up to the crisp, fresh alpine air and looking out the window to see the massive stone peaks glowing in the early morning sun was absolute serenity. 🛏️☕ . 🍴 My culinary highlights · Pyrenean mountain cuisine is hearty, rustic, and deeply comforting after a long day of trekking. I savored a steaming bowl of traditional *garbure* (a rich, slow-simmered cabbage, bean, and confit duck soup), followed by a slice of local mountain cheese paired with crusty bread and a glass of regional wine. 🍲🧀 . 📌 My tips for visiting · Start Your Hike Early: The trail into the cirque is extremely popular during the summer months, so heading out in the early morning lets you enjoy the tranquility of the valley before the daytime crowds arrive. · Pack Weatherproof Layers: Mountain weather in the Pyrenees can change rapidly, bringing sudden cloud cover, wind, or rain even during warm summer days, so always carry a waterproof jacket. · Wear Sturdy Hiking Shoes: While the main path to the base of the cirque is well-maintained, continuing further up into the high trails requires good grip and supportive footwear. 📸🎒 . #Gavarnie #Pyrenees #FranceTravel #VisitFrance #TravelDeep #CirqueDeGavarnie #MountainAdventures #BucketList #ExploreFrance #TravelDiaries

My journey to La Gourgue d’Asque felt like stepping into a hidden corner of nature. Surrounded by towering limestone walls, dense greenery, moss-covered rocks, and the gentle sound of flowing water, the gorge had an untouched beauty that was incredibly peaceful. 💧🏔️ Walking through this lush landscape, every turn revealed another beautiful scene—narrow passages, rugged rock formations, clear streams, and layers of green covering the valley. It felt less like visiting a tourist attraction and more like discovering a secret part of the French Pyrenees. What stayed with me most was the atmosphere: quiet, wild, and wonderfully refreshing. A place that reminded me how beautiful the journey can be when nature takes center stage. 🌿✨ One of those hidden French landscapes I’ll remember for a long time. 🇫🇷💚 #france #adventuretrips #LaGourgueDAsque #GourgueDAsque #France #FrenchPyrenees #Pyrenees #FranceTravel #HiddenFrance #NatureEscape #HiddenGem #HikingFrance #NatureLovers #WildFrance #TravelMemories #ExploreFrance #Wanderlust

Who gets it!! Standing in the heart of the Pyrenees, watching the rushing river in the U-shaped valley, listening to the Cascada de la Cola de Caballo crashing against the rocks like ten thousand galloping horses—at that moment I understood that the Pyrenees is never just a geographical border between France and Spain, but the ultimate symphony of Ordesa National Park and ancient glaciers, the ultimate dialogue between primeval forests and human awe. Here, every breath carries the chill of high altitude and the fragrance of wildflowers, and even my heartbeat is in sync with the canyon's echo. These stories hidden in waterfalls and snow-capped peaks are more vivid than any filter and more touching than any guide. Glacial U-Valley: God's favorite 3D masterpiece As the most stunning visual landmark in the Pyrenees, Ordesa Canyon is breathtakingly beautiful. It is like a crack in the earth split by an ancient glacial axe, with limestone cliffs reaching into the sky on both sides and dense beech and pine forests at the bottom. When the morning sun pierces the mist and golden light spots fall on the meadows of the U-shaped valley, you will feel like you have stumbled into a secret realm from Alice in Wonderland, and every photo is a perfect fusion of wildness and grandeur. Dancing Horsetail: Time amber carved on the cliff As the most ultimate soul of Ordesa, this 18km classic loop hiking route is as beautiful as a dream you don't want to wake up from. As you climb along the Alice-in-Wonderland-like path and cross the last small hill, directly in front of you is the spectacular Monte Perdido (meaning "Lost Mountain"). Standing at the foot of the 3,355m snow-capped peak, watching vultures and eagles circling overhead, you will feel like you are standing at the boundary of human courage, and even your breathing becomes cautious, for fear of disturbing this silence that has spanned ten thousand years. Autumn Fairy Tale: Ultimate romance warmed by time As the most healing humanistic footnote of the Pyrenees, Ordesa in October is as beautiful as an unfinished poem. When autumn is in full swing, the ginkgo and larch trees covering the mountains and plains dye the valley in dazzling amber and golden hues. As you shuttle through the dense primeval forest, listening to the crunch of fallen leaves under your feet, you will feel like you have understood the romance of the Pyrenees, and even your understanding of this land becomes profound: it turns out the most ultimate romance is the breathtaking beauty that can still bloom after the cycle of four seasons. Tipsy in the Canyon: Ultimate relaxation warmed by the mountain breeze As the most photogenic romantic moment in Ordesa, sitting on the ground at the end of the hike is as beautiful as a flowing visual feast. Take a piece of Pyrenees goat cheese out of your backpack, pair it with a sip of hot mulled wine from your thermos, and watch the clear stream flowing by your feet. You will feel like you have possessed the tenderness of the entire Iberian Peninsula, and even time slows down, as if in the next second you could embrace this unique tipsiness together with these glacial relics. Routes Classic Route (Waterfall Loop): Start from Pradera de Ordesa > Traverse primeval forests and canyons > Check in at Horsetail Waterfall > Summit to overlook Monte Perdido (09:00–16:00, photograph the U-shaped valley and waterfall) Deep Route (France-Spain Crossing): Start from Cauterets, France > Cross the Pont d'Espagne and Lac de Gaube > Cross the Col des Oulettes to arrive at Torla, Spain (08:00–18:00, experience cross-border hiking and relaxation) Equipment Canon R6 with wide-angle/telephoto lens (to capture the oppressive feeling of the U-shaped valley and waterfall details) + mobile phone (to photograph hiking signs and wildlife) BGM Epic symphonic music or the Lord of the Rings soundtrack (fits the wildness and grandeur of the Pyrenees) Tips Best time: June–September is the classic hiking season (green grass, blooming wildflowers); October is the autumn foliage season (golden ginkgo, high photo potential); December to April of the following year is the ski season. Transportation: On the Spanish side, you can drive from Barcelona for about 3.5 hours to Torla, but private cars cannot enter the mountain; you must transfer to a bus (€6 round trip) to the starting point. On the French side, you can drive from Toulouse or Pau for 1.5–2 hours to Cauterets. Clothing recommendations: Must wear non-slip hiking shoes and windproof jackets (strong UV rays in the mountains and large temperature differences at the summit); bring a light jacket even in summer; wearing bright colors is extremely photogenic against the gray-white rocks and green valley background. Safety details: The total cumulative climb for the hike is about 600 meters, and it takes about 5 hours including hiking and photography; please act according to your ability. There is a lot of wildlife along the way (such as chamois and marmots), so please keep your distance and do not feed them. Pitfall avoidance: It is highly recommended to download the Komoot app to check hiking routes, which is common in Europe. Some shuttle buses and cable cars on the French side only accept cash, so be sure to prepare small change in advance. There are no supply points in the mountains, so be sure to carry enough drinking water and high-calorie snacks. Extended experience: After descending the mountain, taste the local specialty stew "Garbure" in Torla town. If time permits, you can go to the Le Val d'Azun valley on the French side to soak in hot springs and relax, or experience the traditional Pyrenees wooden house style in the town of Bagnères-de-Luchon.

#bucketlistdestinations The Orlu Nature Reserve in the Pyrenees is a sanctuary for the Isard (Pyrenean chamois) and the Golden Eagle. I took the train from Toulouse to Ax-les-Thermes (€25), then a local bus to the reserve entrance (€2). The Mossy Forest Trail is a 7km loop that takes you through a beech and fir forest draped in a thick layer of moss. The entrance is free, but donations are welcome at the visitor center (cash only). I hiked the trail in late September. The air was crisp, and the forest was silent except for the sound of a nearby stream. My mistake was trying to take a shortcut off the trail; the moss is deep and hides loose rocks and roots. A park ranger, checking on a nearby bird box, gently guided me back to the path. He explained that the moss is a vital part of the forest’s water cycle. “It’s like a giant sponge,” he said. “We must protect it.” The trail is a masterclass in subtlety. The moss creates a world of green that is both calming and awe-inspiring. I saw several Isards in the distance, their white rumps flashing as they bounded across the rocky slopes. The reserve is a testament to the power of conservation. It’s a place where you can feel the pulse of the Pyrenees. The mossy forest is not just a backdrop; it’s the heart of the reserve. Does the success of a nature reserve like Orlu lie in its ability to keep humans out, or in its ability to teach us how to be better guests?

The Pyrenees stretch as a majestic natural border between France and Spain, boasting a landscape so diverse it spans from soaring peaks and plunging valleys to lush forests, alpine meadows, and gargantuan limestone cliffs. One of the most breathtaking areas is the Pyrenees–Mont Perdu region, which straddles the border and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997. What makes this place truly unique is that UNESCO recognizes not just its natural beauty, but also its cultural landscape—a testament to mountain community life and the ancient practice of seasonal livestock migration. On the French side, the undeniable highlight is the Cirque de Gavarnie. Imagine a valley enclosed by sheer limestone mountains forming a colossal natural amphitheater, with massive waterfalls cascading down from the heights. This iconic vista has made Gavarnie a symbol of the Pyrenees. The area features limestone cliffs and several peaks exceeding 3,000 meters, while the Great Cascade (or Gavarnie Falls) drops approximately 423 meters, according to French National Park data. Cross the border into Spain, however, and the atmosphere shifts. In the Ordesa Valley, you’ll encounter deep glacial canyons surrounded by limestone walls, pine forests, and mountain meadows. The further you venture into the valley, the more you feel the immense scale of the mountain walls flanking your path. For hiking enthusiasts, this region is a world-class playground. The French Pyrenees National Park alone offers roughly 350 kilometers of marked trails and numerous alpine lakes, providing everything from leisurely nature walks to challenging high-altitude treks. Mont Perdu itself, the area’s namesake, stands at 3,348 meters and is one of the most prominent limestone peaks in the range. What gives this landscape its grand scale are the scars of ancient glaciers. Many valleys are wide and U-shaped, carved out to create high cliffs and mountainous basins, including the dramatic cirques of Gavarnie, Estaubé, and Troumouse. But the beauty of the Pyrenees isn't limited to its summits. Along the way, you’ll find quaint villages, pastoral meadows, stone houses, and winding mountain roads. Traveling here feels like stepping into a living, breathing landscape of old Europe. It’s also important to note the differing climates between the two sides. The French side is heavily influenced by the Atlantic, making it more humid and prone to rain, while parts of the Spanish side are notably drier. Even if the day begins with clear skies, mountain weather can change rapidly. If you plan to hike, come prepared with high-traction boots, rain gear, plenty of water, and layered clothing. Always check the weather forecast and trail status before heading out. For those who aren’t avid hikers, there is still plenty to see. Many viewpoints can be accessed via villages or roads without needing to summit a peak. Gavarnie itself can be visited year-round, though the atmosphere and accessibility change with the seasons. Summer offers lush green meadows, flowing waterfalls, and accessible trails. Autumn brings a stunning palette of forest colors and crisp air, while winter transforms the range into a white wonderland perfect for snow activities and skiing. Ultimately, the Pyrenees are more than just a mountain range between two countries. They are a vast landscape that weaves together nature, history, culture, and a traditional way of life. If there is one image to remember, it is that of a verdant valley walled in by towering limestone, with waterfalls plunging from the peaks above. It is a view that makes it immediately clear why people fall in love with the Pyrenees. 🏔️🇫🇷🇪🇸

#easytravelpost The road up to Etang de Lers (1,470 m) leaves the D18 from Aulus-les-Bains and winds 12 km to a parking lip where the cirque opens like a green amphitheatre. I came by early bus from Foix to Aulus (SNCF Autocar, ~45 min, 8 EUR, card ok at the gare routière), then hitch-road-walked the last 12 km—three cars in 40 min, standard for Ariège. The lake itself is a wide shallow tarn, but the walk is the point: the Sentier des Étangs loops 9 km past Etang de Lers, Etang de Rabassou, and the Mossy Cirque under Pic de Cabanat (2,311 m). North faces above 1,800 m hold sphagnum and feather moss so deep your boot disappears to the ankle; July thunderstorms turn the slabs slick. Entry to the cirque is free, no toll, no permit. Parking 3 EUR coin-only machine—cards rejected at altitude. I packed 2.5 L water; the refuge at Lers sells coffee (2 EUR cash) but closes at 17:00 outside July–Aug. Wrong move: I wore trail runners after a dry spell, hit a moss chute above Rabassou, and slid 6 m into a bilberry bush. Take poles and grippy soles. The GR 10 crosses here, so you'll meet hut-to-hut trekkers with 12 kg packs—ask them about water sources, they know which springs are sheep-dirty. Local rule: don't wild-camp inside the cirque bowl (Commune de Aulus restricts below 1,600 m May–Oct), but bivouac above is tolerated if you're gone by 8 am. The moss is protected—no digging, no off-trail shortcuts on the north wall. Would you trade a sunny Mediterranean beach for a cold mossy cirque that smells like wet granite and bilberry? I did, and the silence at 6 am with fog burning off Pic de Cabanat was worth every slipped step.

#bucketlistdestinations Gorges de Galamus, on the Aude–Pyrénées-Orientales border, is a limestone slot with the tiny Chapelle Saint-Antoine (17th c.) built into the cliff, reachable by a mossy stair cut into rock. D7 road from Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet, free car park at the gorge mouth, no entry fee, no permit. I drove from Carcassonne (1 hr) in May—spring moss on the chapel wall, vultures overhead, the Agly river cold and clear 80 m below. The stair is 20 m, no rail, wet after rain—I hugged the wall. Boots, not trainers. Card in Saint-Paul for a sandwich; nothing at the gorge. Mistake: I arrived 13:00 on a Sunday—coach buses blocked the one-lane road. Go before 10:00 or after 16:00. Kindness: the chapel caretaker lit a candle for “le randonneur qui regarde trop longtemps” (the hiker who looks too long). When a chapel is carved into a cliff, is the cliff the altar?

#easytravelpost Lac de Gaube (1,721 m) is the postcard of the Pyrenees, and it earns it. From Gavarnie–Pont d'Espagne (1,496 m, paid parking 6 EUR summer, cash/card), either walk 45 min on the forest road or take the chairlift (one-way 9.50 EUR, round 13 EUR, card ok) to the lake shore. I chose the walk down—after the lift queue—and the path is a mossy meadow: hay-scented fescue, gentians, and on the shaded east shore under the Vignemale north face, moss drips off boulders like green velvet curtains. Pont d'Espagne bus from Lourdes (line 962, ~1 h, 4 EUR, July–Aug only, rest of year drive or taxi 60 EUR). The lake has a refuge (Refuge de Gaube, beds 35 EUR half-board, cash preferred, card sometimes works), but day-trippers dominate by 11 am. I arrived at 8:30, had the east shore to myself, watched a marmot colony work the meadow edge. Mistake: I trusted the "easy 45 min" downhill and wore city sneakers—the mossy sections near the Oulette stream crossing are polished limestone, slipped once, soaked a sock. Rules: no swimming (glacial lake, protected catchment), no drones, dogs leashed Jun–Sep for ibex calving. The GR 10 runs the far shore toward Vignemale—if you go 3 km past the refuge, the moss meadow gives way to scree and the real altitude starts. Is a lake this famous still worth it? Yes, if you walk the unpaved east shore before the chairlift crowd lands. The moss there holds the cold air from Vignemale like a held breath.

#easytravelpost Etang du Diable (2,200 m) sits under the Montcalm massif (3,077 m) on the Ariège–Andorra flank. Approach from the Orlu valley: drive D25 to Orlu village, then the forest track (closed to cars past Pont de la Mouline, 1,100 m) 10 km to Etang de la Hillette (1,760 m), then a stiff 2 h climb on the GR 10 variant to Etang du Diable. I biked the track to Hillette (rented VTT in Ax-les-Thermes, 20 EUR/day, cash), then booted up. The "devil's tarn" is black-bottomed, rimmed by moss on the north slab where snow patches linger into August. No refuge at the lake—Refuge d'Orlu at 1,400 m has beds (28 EUR, card sometimes), but I bivouacked at Hillette (allowed above 1,500 m). Water: carry 3 L, the Hillette outlet is clean with filter. Orlu valley has a natura 2000 entry fee 4 EUR (honor box at Mouline), cash only. Mistake: I left Ax at 10 am, biked slow, reached Hillette at 1 pm, climbed to Diable at 3, caught in hail by 4—retreated to Hillette shivering. Start at 7. The moss near the Diable shore is protected; don't step on the cushion plants. Is a lake named after the devil still sacred if the moss on its rim is the softest thing for 10 km?

A beautiful morning off the water at Lac Superieur! Lush and breezy despite the heat wave elsewhere along the northeastern regions of North America this week!

Time Monument by the Lot River — The Old Bridge of Cahors Nestled in the gentle Lot Valley of southern France, the town of Cahors rests by the water, where a quaint and majestic stone bridge spans the shimmering river, standing quietly for over six centuries. This is the Valentré Bridge, affectionately known as the Old Bridge of Cahors. It is not only a vital link connecting both banks of the Lot River but also a masterpiece of medieval French architecture. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, it is a timeless epic that holds the spirit of ancient castles, the footsteps of pilgrims, and legends passed down through the ages. The 14th century unfolded slowly along the Lot River. Construction of the Old Bridge of Cahors began in 1308, taking seventy years of dedicated craftsmanship before its completion in 1380. In those medieval times, marked by frequent wars and bustling trade, the bridge was designed not just as a simple crossing but with dual purposes of passage and defense, serving as a watery shield protecting the town of Cahors. For centuries, it silently witnessed the changing seasons of the valley, watching countless pilgrims, merchants, and travelers pass by, preserving the medieval spirit and life to this day. The entire bridge is carved and built from solid stone blocks, without any flashy decoration, showcasing the stone’s own weight and resilience. Stretching 138 meters across the Lot River, it features six towering Gothic pointed arches arranged in a row, each arch spanning 16.5 meters with elegant, balanced curves that embody the solemn aesthetics of medieval architecture. Below the piers are specially designed triangular cutwaters, both delicate and practical, which have withstood centuries of river currents and ice impacts, standing firm to dissipate the water’s force and demonstrating the ancient builders’ ingenious wisdom. The most striking sight on the Old Bridge is its three square stone towers rising from the bridge deck. These towers stand staggered, with the tallest soaring over 40 meters above the river. Their walls are lined with orderly battlements and defensive openings, typical of medieval military architecture. The imposing arrow slits, intricate crenellations, and rustic projecting structures layer detail upon detail, recreating the ancient defense mechanisms. Once, guards stood watch atop these towers, protecting the land and its people; today, the smoke of battle has cleared, and the majestic towers have shed their warlike aura, becoming the bridge’s most distinctive emblem, solemnly standing guard over the peaceful landscape. This enduring ancient bridge is also shrouded in a romantic and eerie legend, earning it the nickname “Devil’s Bridge.” According to the tale, the long and difficult construction faced many obstacles, causing delays. In desperation, the devil appeared, promising to use his supernatural power to help complete the bridge quickly, day and night, on the condition that he would claim the soul of the first to cross it. The craftsmen, both fearful and helpless, agreed. On the day the bridge was finished, clever locals tricked the devil by sending a cat across first, nullifying the pact. Enraged, the devil secretly carved a tiny statue of himself into the central tower, lying in wait for revenge. For centuries, countless visitors have come to seek this hidden statue on the weathered stone walls, letting the ancient legend flow on with the river, adding a lively touch of mystery to the solemn old bridge. As a key point on the Way of St. James pilgrimage route, the Old Bridge of Cahors carries cultural significance far beyond its architecture. Since medieval times, countless devout pilgrims have crossed the stone bridge, journeying through the Lot Valley toward their faith’s distant destination. Hurrying believers, traveling merchants, and wandering migrants have all left their footprints and wishes here. In 1998, the bridge was inscribed as a World Cultural Heritage site, transforming from a small town’s defensive structure into a shared treasure of medieval civilization for all humanity. After more than six centuries of wind and rain, with the river flowing endlessly, the bridge’s spirit remains unchanged. Its defensive role long ended, and the clamor of carriages has quieted, the Old Bridge of Cahors today is pure scenery, a specimen of time. The clear waters of the Lot River flow gently, reflecting the bridge’s silhouette on the shimmering surface. As morning and evening light shifts and the seasons change, the stone bridge grows ever more warm and profound in the interplay of sky and water. The bluestone pavement has been polished smooth and warm by time and footsteps; every groove is a mark of time, every stone carries the warmth of history. From the turbulent medieval era to a peaceful new age, the Old Bridge of Cahors spans six centuries, witnessing dynasties rise and fall, human life’s joys and sorrows, and the changing landscape. It is a miracle of architecture, a vessel of legend, and a link of civilization. Silent yet resilient, it preserves the architectural spirit of the Middle Ages, seals the devout faith of the pilgrimage route, and tells the timeless story of gentleness and steadfastness by the Lot River. The wind sweeps through the valley, the water reflects the ancient bridge, time never ages, and the spirit endures.

🏔️Hidden Cloud Sanctuary in the Pyrenees — An Adventure at Hotel Viafago❄️ As the car rounded the last mountain bend, Hotel Viafago suddenly emerged from the pine forest. This wooden cabin nestled in the Lladurs Valley looked like a treasure cradled in the palm of snowy mountains, its wooden roof dusted with light snow, and smoke drifting from the chimney mingling with the mist in the mountains. 🌲A View from Every Window, Sleeping with the Snowy Peaks The moment you open the guest room door, your breath lightens—the entire wall of floor-to-ceiling windows frames the snowy peaks of the Pyrenees like a living painting. The wool blanket by the bed carries the scent of sunshine; it’s said to be handwoven by local shepherds, feeling like a cloud in your hands. The best part is the hanging chair by the window—wrapped in a blanket, you can watch clouds drift between the peaks, and occasionally see wild mountain goats running across the slopes, their bell-like hoofbeats breaking the valley’s silence. 🍽️Warm Mountain Flavors on Your Palate The breakfast wooden table is always set with freshly baked walnut bread, and the butter comes from the neighboring farm, spreading a faint milky aroma on the bread. The hostess brings a bowl of hot chestnut soup, made from chestnuts picked early that morning from the woods behind the house; the sweet warmth flows from your throat down to your stomach. You must try the braised beef for dinner, made from locally free-range yellow cattle, slow-cooked for four hours until the meat is tender enough to melt in your mouth. Paired with wild mushrooms gathered from the valley, even the sauce is scooped up with mashed potatoes to savor every drop. 🛷Step Outside to Nature, Living in Harmony A small path behind the hotel leads straight to the ski slopes. When you set off on your skis, the owner smiles and hands you a hot cocoa: “The sea of clouds at the summit is waiting for you now.” If skiing isn’t your thing, hiking in the forest with a guide is wonderful too—the pine needle carpet is soft underfoot, and you might find pine cones forgotten by squirrels, which still carry the fresh scent of pine resin when cracked open. Returning to the hotel at dusk, the fireplace is roaring, wood crackling. Travelers from around the world gather around, sharing their day’s adventures with gestures and laughter. A copper kettle on the hearth brews hot mulled wine, the scent of cinnamon filling the air, warm enough to make you want to stay forever. 🌌Overnight in the Mountains, Conversing with the Stars The balcony late at night is a hidden treasure. Turn off the room lights and look up to a sky full of stars, the Milky Way so clear it looks like someone scattered crushed diamonds. The mountain breeze rustles through the pines, carrying distant village dog barks, and occasionally snow falls softly from the branches, shimmering in the moonlight. Lying in bed, you can hear the gentle sound of snow pressing on pine branches, like nature humming a lullaby. At this moment, you suddenly understand why some say this place is a “corner forgotten by time”—because the most luxurious pleasure is letting your heart slowly settle among the mountains and waters. On the day we left, the hostess handed us a small bag of homemade wild honey, saying, “When the snow melts, the wildflowers in the valley will bloom like a sea. Remember to come back.” As the car drove away, looking back, the lights of Hotel Viafago twinkled among the snowy mountains like a star that refuses to go out.✨

Cauterets is a small town in the heart of the Pyrenees. It’s great for a quiet ski trip, away from the large crowds. It’s a small town and the ski area is not too big either, but it has something for all levels. There is a little wooden hut in the middle of the slopes where you can stop for some food and drinks. The ski area is in a circular valley, with 36 km of on-piste trails. If you want to venture out, Cauterets is very close to bigger areas of the Tourmalet and Luz Ardiden so you can explore different areas if you like. Cauterets also has an ice hockey rink and regular demo/show matches, which is a great evening out once you’re done with skiing for the day! Cauterets is also well-known for its thermal spas. Les Bains du Rocher is in the centre of town and a lovely place to relax the muscles and recover after a day on the slopes! #skitrip #pyrenees #spa

The pastel yellows of modern buildings glow against bursts of green (and flowers!) from planters along narrow lanes. 🏔️ Stroll the town center: Amble past traditional facades with mountain views always peeking over rooftops. Don’t miss Rue Gambetta or Place Roussel, where you’ll find the best snapshot angles—look for that golden building fronted by lush potted plants for a classic "Wanderlust” shot! 💐 Must-do: Dip your fingers in the legendary thermal fountains (the source for the town’s famous spa reputation), especially at Place des Deux Bains. Albi, the Red Town Located in the Tarn department of southwestern France, Albi is a town famous for its "red" character. The entire old town is largely constructed using the local red bricks, hence its nickname, "the Red Town (la ville rouge)." The soul of the town is the majestic Sainte-Cécile Cathedral, adjacent to which stands the Palais de la Berbie, now the renowned Toulouse-Lautrec Museum, housing the most complete collection of works by this Albi-born painter. A stroll along the Tarn River reveals a tranquil and poetic scene where the old town, red brick bridges, and their reflections in the water create a picturesque landscape. Albi's old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, remarkably well-preserved and retaining the relaxed pace characteristic of southern France. Albi is understated yet warm and profound; its red is not a vibrant, boisterous display, but a quiet radiance refined by time.

Pro tip: Arrive early in the morning if you want the best spots, especially on weekends—it fills up fast when the sun’s out. 🚗☀️ My tip: The area is well-lit, and I had zero hassle finding a space late afternoon. Pay with coins or card, and there’s usually a map of local attractions at the entrance—snap a pic to plan your stroll! If you’re thinking of staying overnight, double-check local signs for overnight parking rules (they do change with seasons). Getting there: Drive is super scenic—just follow the D25. Public buses also stop nearby if you want to switch to local transport. Snack hack: Loudenvielle has cute bakeries just a short walk away; grab a croissant and coffee before your mountain outing! Weather tip: Midi-Pyrenees can be chilly in the early morning and evenings, so pack a layer even in summer. #MidiPyreneesTravel #Loudenvielle #FranceRoadTrip #TravelTips #ParkingPro

📍Albi, France (Occitanie) Albi is a small city located in southwestern France. Developed around the Tarn River, this city is known as the Red City for its red brick buildings. The vast, deep Tarn River is spanned by numerous bridges, creating a breathtaking sight. While most cities in France are built around rivers, few boast such a spectacular view with such large, impressive bridges. ◾️Access About an hour by train from Toulouse. It's about a 20-minute walk from the station to the city center. Bus services are also available. #Toulouse #Occitanie #EuropeTravel #Albi #France #FranceTrip #FranceTourism #GirlsTrip #CountryTrip

#holidayitinerary Lac d’Oredon in the Occitanie region of France is a serene mountain lake that feels like a perfect escape into nature. Surrounded by pine forests and high peaks, the setting is both dramatic and calming. The lake is easy to reach, which makes it a great spot for a relaxed walk, a picnic, or just sitting quietly by the shore. The reflections of the mountains on the clear water create a picture perfect view, especially on a sunny day. From here, you can also access nearby trails that lead deeper into the Néouvielle Reserve, making it a great starting point for hiking. Despite its accessibility, the atmosphere remains peaceful and unspoiled. Lac d’Oredon is a wonderful place to slow down, breathe the fresh mountain air, and enjoy the natural charm of the Pyrenees in Occitanie.

After two weeks, I returned to the Pyrenees, but this time I switched from Vielha in Spain to Cauteret on the French side. I hiked a section of the GR10, a classic route traversing the Pyrenees. As the altitude increased, the scenery kept changing—from waterfalls to alpine lakes, barren landscapes, and snow-capped mountains. Every segment was stunning, and I absolutely fell in love with this place. The first segment was from La Raillère to Pont d'Espagne, with an elevation gain from 1,000 to 1,500 meters. This section is called "Chemin de Cascade" (Waterfall Trail), where you can see numerous powerful waterfalls along the way. The trail is shaded by trees, making it a cool and pleasant hike. The second segment was from Pont d'Espagne to Lac de Gaube, with the elevation rising to about 1,700 meters. Here, you'll find a beautiful alpine lake. Up close, the water is crystal clear, and from a distance, it looks like a sapphire. The third segment continued upward from the lake. As the altitude increased, the scenery became more barren yet expansive. The trail passes through rocky terrain and meadows, leading to a mountain hut called Refuge des Oulettes de Gaube. From here, you can get very close to the snow-capped mountains. You can continue exploring further, but I chose to return the same way. I highly recommend this route for several reasons: 1. The scenery is diverse and beautiful, with each segment offering its own unique charm. 2. It's friendly for those with less stamina. The first segment has a shuttle bus option, and the second segment has a cable car. You can tackle one segment at a time and complete the route over several days. 3. Supplies are easily accessible. There’s a restaurant at Pont d'Espagne, and a bit further towards the parking lot, there are free restrooms and water. 4. Transportation is relatively convenient. The nearest train station is in Lourdes, and from Lourdes to Cauteret, there’s the 965 bus line, which costs only 2 euros and takes just over an hour. You can stock up on basic supplies at a supermarket and start your hike. While accommodation in Cauteret is expensive, hotels in Lourdes are much cheaper. For around 400 RMB per night, you can stay in a three-star hotel. Lastly, I’ve attached the route map and bus schedule.

I took a Flixbus from Montpellier to Toulouse. The one-way ticket was 13 euros and the journey took less than 3 hours. I saw a lively market at Eqlise Saint Aubin Square on the way. After getting off the bus, you can walk to Place Saint Pierre. There are many seats in the square where you can enjoy the sunshine. You can also sit on the steps by the bridge or have a picnic on the lawn by the river. It's very healing. From Place Saint Pierre, you can walk south along the river. The river view and the sound of street musicians playing the guitar are very similar to the atmosphere in Rome. At Place de Justice, you can take Metro Line 3 to Université de Paul Sabatier. Here you can take a cable car up the mountain. Take one stop to Hôpital Rangueil, then you can walk to the top of the mountain and overlook Toulouse. The park on the top of the mountain is called Parc de Pech David. The viewpoint can be found on Google as Point de vue/Belvédère Pech David. Here you can overlook the Garonne River and the city. If the weather is good, watching the sunset here is really great. However, since today is a special forces day trip, I went down the mountain early and returned to Montpellier. The cable car ticket is the same price as the subway ticket, both are 1.8 euros for a one-way trip. You can buy tickets directly at the self-service ticket machine next to it, which is very convenient. In addition, I tried the Thai restaurant Thai Kafe in Toulouse today. The sweet and sour fried fish is really good. It's a little spicy and goes well with rice. It's also not far from the train station and bus station.

Always beautiful!
