2026 Sunshine Coast Travel Guide: must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transport & travel experiences (updated in July)

Just a short journey from Vancouver is BC's Sunshine Coast, a strip of earthly paradise. Located on the north side of Howe Sound, the southernmost fjord in North America, the Sunshine Coast comprises several small towns and villages including Gibsons, Roberts Creek, Sechelt, Halfmoon Bay and Pender Harbour, each with its own characteristics. Getting There - Take the ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale. The area is most easily explored by car, but there is a bus from the Langdale ferry terminal which stops in each settlement; Gibsons Landing is compact enough to be explored on foot. Attractions - Enjoy the natural beauty! There are many fine beaches, particularly the long sandbar at Roberts Creek Beach. There is an abundance of hiking trails. Gibsons served as the set for the long-running CBC TV series the Beachcombers, and people still come to see the area featured in the series. Hotels - There are a number of small hotels but especially recommended are B&Bs, of which there are many. Food & Restaurants - Seafood is a natural choice here beside the sea. Molly's Reach is a longstanding favourite for having featured in the Beachcombers series and since then served as a real restaurant. It offers a fine view of Gibsons Harbour. In recent years several craft breweries have opened, starting with Persephone Brewing, now a local favourite. Sit in their garden, have some freshly baked pizza and listen to live local bands whilst sipping their excellent brews. Shopping - There are many local shops offering handicrafts, art and souvenirs, particularly in Gibsons Landing and Sechelt. Don't miss Reasons to Live Books, an excellent little new and used bookstore. When to go: Despite the name, this area is in a temperate rainforest and subject to rain at any time of year. The most reliable times for good weather are in May and July-September. We spent one night here en route to the airport, traveling from the Sunshine Coast. The location was absolutely fantastic—just steps away from the scenic sea wall and False Creek, and conveniently near the SkyTrain, making the airport only about half an hour away, even including walking time! Our suite offered lounge access and incredible views of the city and False Creek. The bathroom stood out with its luxurious deep soaker tub (offering stunning views), separate walk-in shower, and private toilet cubicle. However, while the bathroom was impressive, the rest of the suite felt peculiar. The living room featured an odd, exceedingly uncomfortable couch, and the bedroom lacked air conditioning, making it uncomfortably warm. Both my wife and I struggled with the pillows—they were unusually uncomfortable, and sleeping became a challenge. The club lounge had good food options during breakfast and evening appetizer times. While the wine selection was commendable and reasonably priced, seating was limited, with mostly couches and lounge chairs that made eating awkward. The highlight, however, was the staff. Every member we encountered was exceptionally friendly, and their welcoming demeanor left a lasting impression.

If you've already been to Whistler and Sea to Sky, consider dedicating your next weekend to the Sunshine Coast. A 40-minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay feels like stepping into another world. No commercialized attractions, no rushed tourists—just quiet towns, azure seas, forest trails, and a perfectly relaxed pace of life. Here's a three-day, two-night itinerary I personally tried: Day 1 | Gibsons Town | Beach Walk + Sunset 🚢 Horseshoe Bay Ferry (40 minutes) → Langdale First stop: Gibsons. ✔ Molly’s Reach (Filming location for *The Beachcombers*) ✔ Gibsons Public Market (Local seafood, snacks, handicrafts) ✔ Stroll along the harbor pier and watch the sailboats ✔ Relax and gaze at the sea at Armours Beach ✔ Find a restaurant with a sea view to watch the sunset in the evening. 👉 I recommend staying in Gibsons or Roberts Creek. Day 2 | Roberts Creek + Sechelt This was my favorite day. ✔ Roberts Creek Pier ✔ Roberts Creek Mandala (a painted plaza by the sea, perfect for photos) ✔ Seaside cafes ✔ Roberts Creek Farmers’ Market (if it happens to be Sunday) or Sechelt Farmers’ & Artisans Market (summer) ✔ Davis Bay Beach (best for sunset viewing) Day 3|Light Hiking + Return to Vancouver 🌿 Smuggler Cove Marine Provincial Park ✔ Approximately 2 km in total ✔ Boardwalk ✔ Forest ✔ Bay Small pier ✔ Low difficulty, can be completed in 2 hours Afternoon return to Langdale, take the ferry back to Vancouver. The main trip is mainly camping and playing with nature, and of course digging oysters by the sea! Massillon has both a paradise riverside campsite, and you can sit on the beach and watch the sunset, eat oysters, and enjoy the relaxing slow life of the Sunshine Coast. If you want to have a really relaxing and interesting holiday, you might as well refer to the following itinerary recommendations ~ 🏕️ Itinerary Highlights: 1. Enjoy the sea breeze, starry sky and forest surround for an in-person camping experience. 2. Dig oysters by the sea, feel the life of fishermen, freshness instantly enjoy. 3. Take a leisurely beach walk and slow down while sunbathing. 🎒 Itinerary practical recommendation First stop|willingdon beach campsite 📍Address: 4845 marie ave, powell river bc, Sunshine Coast Situated on the coast, just about a 10-minute drive from the city center, the campground is well equipped with basic washrooms and barbecues provided. It is recommended to check-in a little early to avoid being crowded and not being able to choose a beautiful spot! I like to sit under the shade of a tree and enjoy the breeze. I can also see the super beautiful starry sky at night😚! If you are interested in playing in the water, there are SUP, canoe and other rental spots near the shore area. Stop 2 | Oyster Digging Experience You can dig oysters with your own hands every day when the tide goes out near the beach. Remember to bring gloves and a small shovel, safe and hygienic. The local oysters are super fresh and sweet, and ready to eat is super ceremonial! (But keep an eye on tide times, and it’s best to ask camp staff about the oyster area and potential safety tips) 💡 Tip: After digging the oysters can be rinsed with seawater on site, but before eating it is best to simply disinfect or wait for a professional to handle. There are several snack bars nearby that can help with the barbecue, and last time I got it done at Sunny Bay Café, the oysters were grilled and added with garlic butter. Stop 3 | A leisurely beach stroll Walking south from the camping area is a long beach, which is not too crowded on weekdays, suitable for couples to date/friends to take IG photos. Recommended to go at sunset, the entire coastline is dyed gold, taking pictures super good - some beaches near also hidden small intertidal zone ponds, you can see crabs, sea snails, etc., suitable for bringing children together 🛣️Transportation guide It is recommended to drive from the city center to the camping area (about 10 minutes), or if you do not want to drive you can also take a local Taxi or book a shuttle Mini Van. The beach area is very easy to walk on, and walking slowly all the way has been very enjoyable. ⭐Private tips 1. The Sunshine Coast is super sunny during the day, so remember to bring a hat and sunscreen! 2. Bring mosquito repellent and spare sandals on beaches and campsites. 3. Sunday Cider is located in the woods right off Sunshine Avenue, free from the noise of road traffic, and just a few minutes' drive from downtown Gibsons. Various freshly brewed fruit wines are worth tasting, and my personal favorite is the white peach. The vineyard has a spacious outdoor area with some play facilities, making it very suitable for families with children to spend quality time. There is a food truck selling snacks. I have visited three wineries around Gibsons, and their business models are roughly the same.
