The castle looks close to the old town, but it takes about 20 minutes to walk there, and the mountain road is steep. · Gjirokastër Castle is one of the largest castles in the Balkans and the largest mountain military fortress in Europe. It was built in the 12th–13th century by the Despotate of Epirus. In 1811, Ottoman ruler Ali Pasha of Tepelena added many buildings, expanding it to its current size. · Gjirokastër Castle looks more like a castle than Berat Castle, which looks more like a mountain town. Gjirokastër Castle is located on the highest point in the city, giving it a commanding presence. Its strategic significance is self-evident. After centuries of wind and rain, it still looks magnificent. · Note that the entrance fee for Gjirokastër Castle is 400 lek, payable in cash. Euros are accepted, but credit cards are not. The only downside to Albania is that credit cards are not widely accepted, so be sure to bring enough cash. · Gjirokastër Castle is large, but the most worthwhile sites are four areas. Allow 1–2 hours: ✅ Castle Terrace: Don't rush inside the castle. Instead, climb up to the terrace, a popular Instagram spot. The wide view offers a clear view of Gjirokastër and the entire castle. It's also a great place to take photos. ✅ Military Museum: The museum has three main exhibition halls: the Gjirokastër History Museum, the Military History Museum, and a prison museum. The museum requires a separate ticket, which costs 200 lek. ✅ US Military Aircraft: This is a US military trainer aircraft detained by Albania during the Cold War. It can be seen after leaving the Military Museum. Next to it is a section of the ancient city wall. Through the battlements, you can overlook the entire city, with lovely Ottoman-style buildings scattered throughout the valley. ✅ Clock Tower: Walk through the open-air theater in the castle to reach the clock tower, a symbol of Gjirokastër Castle. It has been running since the 19th century and complements the austere and solid ancient castle.

Getting There - From Sarrande it takes around 30-40 minutes with a car. From the capital of Albania, Tirana it takes up to 4 and a half hours to get there Attractions - The castle is very big and it is possible to spend a full day at this Attraction. it is very affordable. One of the main attractions is the US Air Force Airplane which happens to be at the castle bit nobody exactly knows why. There are many different theories from different parties. Hotels - there are many hotels in town Food & Restaurants - There is a nice restaurant with a beautiful view over the town on the top of the castle Shopping - There are many shops around #tripblazers #bucketlistreboot

this castle located in this historical city - Gjirokastër, Albania. this is one of the UNESCO sites in Albania, we paid 400 lek each for the entrance fee. once you enter the castle, you will have the view of the city. this 12th century castle overlooking the city, where you are able to find the clock tower, a church and a museum. it’s actually quite big, we spent almost 2 hours walking around, and there is an old airplane where you are able to take a nice picture. there are certain tunnels where you are able to walk, it was a nice hideout from the sun especially when it’s sunny. and the central plaza is beautiful, we read the history,apparently that’s where they host events overall, this is a must visit place#passionpassport #staycation #gooutside #mountainview #unesco

It mainly tells the story of Skanderbeg and the Albanian resistance against the Ottoman Empire, with quite a lot of reconstructions and replicas. Admission is 500 lek. But right next to it is the place that, in my opinion, is genuinely worth coming to Krujë for — the Ethnographic Museum of Krujë. The Ethnographic Museum is housed not in a modern reconstruction, but in an authentic traditional house dating back to the 18th century. The Topthani family house was built in 1764 and has preserved original elements of Ottoman architecture. Inside, there are around 1,000 authentic objects, some of them up to 500 years old: furniture, clothing, pottery, tools, household items, and traditional crafts. And this is where you finally get a feeling for the real Albania — not a museum reconstruction, but the actual life of people who lived here. This museum alone makes a trip to Krujë worthwhile. For me, it is one of the few places in Albania where you can truly see and feel the country’s history through everyday life. And, of course, there is the famous Old Bazaar of Krujë. It is heavily promoted as a must-see attraction in Krujë. The bazaar itself is charming, with wooden shops and plenty of souvenirs. But honestly — there was no great surprise waiting for me. They sell pretty much the same things you’ll find in other touristy places around Albania: carpets, souvenirs, jewelry, copperware, and other things aimed at tourists. So, my personal ranking of Krujë would be: the Ethnographic Museum — absolutely; the castle and the views — yes; the Skanderbeg Museum — optional; the bazaar — worth a look, but I wouldn’t make a special trip just for it.
