during my exploration of Papua New Guinea in occasion of the independence celebration of the country, I had the opportunity to visit this very remote village of the Asaro tribe. The University of Goroka Domitories are the best in the south pacific region. They are home to thousands of intelligent elites of the PNG who are enrolled to study in the university. Thus the building is constructed in a conducive manner suitable for learning and accommodation.

It brings together numerous cultural groups, often referred to as singsings, each presenting distinctive dances, costumes, songs and rituals. Although the event has become an important attraction for visitors, its central purpose remains the celebration of cultural diversity, community pride and the transmission of traditions between generations. The festival is usually held in September, around the country’s Independence Day. Beyond the festival grounds, Goroka offers an opportunity to discover the landscapes and communities of the Eastern Highlands. The surrounding valleys are shaped by gardens, coffee plantations, forested slopes and villages where traditional ways of life continue alongside modern influences. The Bena Bena, Asaro and other highland communities contribute to the region’s cultural richness, while nearby attractions such as the Asaro Mudmen tradition reveal how local histories and ancestral stories are expressed through performance. The Goroka Show brings many of these cultural traditions together, but they are rooted in communities whose identities extend far beyond the festival itself. What stayed with me most was the extraordinary diversity visible within a single gathering. Every group brought its own colours, rhythms, symbols and interpretation of heritage, creating a powerful reminder that Papua New Guinea is home to an exceptional mosaic of cultures and languages. The Goroka Show is not simply a spectacular display of costumes and dance; it is a living celebration of belonging, memory and continuity. Goroka is the heart of the Highlands - capital town of Eastern Highlands Province, about 1,600m above sea level. It's smaller and much cooler than Moresby, which is why a lot of people love going up there. Fast facts Where: On the Highlands Highway, about 285km from Lae and 90km from Kainantu. From Port Moresby it's a ∼1 hour flight - Goroka Airport (GKA) is right in the middle of town. Size: The town itself was around 19,000 people in the 2000 census, but it's grown a lot since. The whole Eastern Highlands Province is about 11,157 km2 with a population of 579,825 (2011 census). Climate: Cool highlands climate - days around 22-26C, nights can drop to 12-14C. Dry season May-October is the best time to visit. Timezone: Same as Moresby - UTC+10. Why Goroka is famous 1. Coffee capital Eastern Highlands is PNG's coffee heartland. Almost everything around Goroka is smallholder coffee. The Coffee Industry Corporation is based there. 2. Culture - Goroka Show and Asaro Mudmen Goroka is best known for the Goroka Show, also called the Eastern Highlands Agricultural Show. It's a huge sing-sing held every year close to Independence Day (16 September) in Goroka. For 3 days, 100+ tribal groups from all over PNG come in full bilas - feathers, body paint, kundu drums. It's one of the biggest cultural events in the Pacific. The province is also home to the famous Asaro Mudmen - the Asaro tribe from just outside Goroka who wear white clay masks with huge teeth and mud-covered bodies. You’ll see them at every show. 3. Safe, education town People call it one of the more peaceful highlands towns. It’s known as a hub for business, education and tourism. Big institutions based there: University of Goroka (UOG) National Sports Institute (NSI) National Film Institute PNG Institute of Medical Research What to do if you go; Goroka Market - one of the biggest in the Highlands. Best on Saturday. Kaukau, kumu, bananas, highlands pitpit, bilums everywhere. J.K. McCarthy Museum - right near the market, great collection of Highlands artifacts. Asaro Village - 20 mins drive, go see the mudmen in their village. Mt. Kiss and Mt. Gahavisuka - short hikes with views over the whole valley. There's a Provincial Park at Mt. Gahavisuka with a craft village. Coffee factory tour - visit a coffee mill or plantation, most will show you around if you ask. Daulo Pass - on the way up from Lae, incredible view and often you’ll be above the clouds. Getting around Air Niugini and PNG Air fly POM-Goroka daily, about 1hr 15min. By road it's the Highlands Highway - about 6-7 hours from Lae in good conditions, but the road can be rough. PMVs and town buses are the main local transport.
