2026 Goto Travel Guide: must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transport & travel experiences (updated in August)

I recently went on a trip to Nagasaki after a long time!! I visited various places such as Dozaki, Mizunoura, and Kusuhara Church on Fukue Island in the Goto Islands. I also enjoyed lots of delicious food like Sara Udon, Champon, and fresh fish from the Genkai Sea, leaving my stomach completely satisfied 😋 And of course, the last thing to do on a trip is to buy souvenirs!! When it comes to Nagasaki souvenirs, it has to be "Nagasaki Castella" 💕 After trying and comparing many different shops over the years, here are my two recommendations: ❶ Fukusaya Fukusaya is famous for its "one-person, one-process" method, where a single craftsman handles everything from cracking the eggs to baking the castella. They are committed to handmade production without using mixers, resulting in a fluffy and moist texture. The batter has a subtly refined sweetness, which pairs perfectly with the coarse sugar at the bottom. ❷ Bunmeido Known for its famous commercial jingle, "Castella is number one, the phone is number two, Bunmeido is the snack for 3 o'clock♪," Bunmeido uses carefully selected ingredients such as "Nanban Eggs" developed with contracted farms and glutinous rice syrup. [Goto Islands] Minshuku on Fukue Island I wanted to stay at a minshuku in the Goto Islands. I thought a minshuku would give me a more local feel than a hotel. 😊 The guesthouse I stayed at this time, Minshuku Hamabe, is located in a quiet village about a 50-minute drive from the city center. The owner also runs a ferry service, and many guests seemed to enjoy fishing. 🐟 Thoughts✍️ ・The landlady was absolutely wonderful, and I was impressed with her hospitality!! ・The rice is absolutely delicious ・The fresh sashimi is enough for about two people 😂 　(The colors are similar, but it was an assortment of several types.) The Goto Islands are made up of 129 islands, large and small. They're divided into two areas: Kamigoto in the north and Shimogoto in the south. This time, I visited Shimogoto for a two-day, one-night trip, focusing on Fukue Island. ✨ I flew from Haneda on Friday night and stayed the night before in Fukuoka. This allowed me to arrive on Fukue Island just after 9am! 📍 kinnagoajiro, Fukue Island This one-story inn was built by the owners together with the supervision of a young architect representing Japan, and is entirely made of Goto cedar wood. The owner insisted on using things that are kind to people and the environment. All amenities are from "MARK&WEB", and the kitchen utensils and furniture are from "Snow Peak" and "BALMUDA". I visited Shinkamigoto Town and Goto City for 3 days and 2 nights 😊✨ You can travel to the islands from either Nagasaki Port or Sasebo Port, but this time I went to the Goto Islands from Nagasaki Port. ・Shinkamigoto Town There is a lot of nature, and you can experience making camellia oil, Goto udon, and Yakame salt, so I highly recommend it for those who want to feel the local island vibe! Shimashoku GINO, located on Fukue Island in the Goto Islands, is a wonderful restaurant where you can casually enjoy authentic Italian food made with rich ingredients from Goto. It stands alone in this beautiful rural landscape, but the sauce and dough of the pasta and pizza are authentic, and everything I ate was delicious✨ There are few restaurants for tourists in the Goto Islands (opening days and opening hours are much shorter than in the city center), so I recommend making a reservation for lunch or dinner. The museum houses numerous works by Yamamoto Nizo, a local manga artist famous for his work on Ghibli films. Also, be sure to try the Champon at [Heian Shokudo] before you leave. I was deeply moved by the view of the sandy beach and sea from Fukue Island in the Goto Islands! On my Nagasaki trip, I went to Fukue Island in the Goto Islands. I signed up for a two-hour sightseeing bus tour, visiting various famous spots in Fukue, and the sea view was absolutely stunning. Even though I couldn't get close, just looking at it from afar, I was truly moved by the beautiful sea and the white lighthouse! Fukue Island has many tourist attractions, but they're geographically spread out, so you can't get around without a car... There are many famous places, such as the Nizo Yamamoto Museum (famous for Ghibli films) and the Goto Samurai Residence Ruins... I looked into what to do and found out that Goto Bus offers sightseeing bus tours for groups of 5 or more on certain days... so I quickly made a reservation and was able to participate! The tour lasted two hours, and we did a lot of sightseeing. I spent the next two hours on my own, visiting the Goto Tourism and History Museum and having a meal, and before I knew it, it was time to go home! It was so much fun... my first time setting foot on the Goto Islands and sightseeing! Incidentally, the Ishida Castle Goto Family Garden, a nationally designated scenic spot... unfortunately... had a "Closed" sign... I was really looking forward to it. Next time, I'd like to stay overnight and take my time...

The fried rice and champon were incredibly delicious... I ate too much! The walls were covered with celebrity autographs, and the restaurant had a Showa-era retro feel. I was full and relaxed after my meal. On my Nagasaki trip, I took my first jetfoil to Fukue Island in the Goto Islands. While a regular ferry takes 4.5 hours, the jetfoil gets you there in 2.5 hours!! The fare was 8800 yen one way, so it was a little under 20000 yen round trip, which isn't cheap, but it saves time. Also, the jetfoil is very smooth... but that also means there's a higher chance of cancellation... cancellations are only accepted until 4 PM the day before... the decision on cancellation is made one hour before departure... This means... if it's cancelled, the fare is refunded, but the bus tour fare isn't, and neither is the return jetfoil fare once it departs... I was nervous, but it departed safely... without any rocking at all It was so relaxing! Caution!! The boat left 5 minutes before departure time! You absolutely must board at least 10 minutes before departure! For meals, I recommend the Champon or Sara Udon at Heian Shokudo. For souvenirs, I recommend Kankoro Mochi.

Goto Islands, just a 1.5-hour boat ride from Nagasaki City 🗾 Forget your daily worries and enjoy the rich natural scenery, tourist attractions, and local specialties! Located in Nagasaki Prefecture, Goto City is part of an archipelago of islands with a population of approximately 30,000, collectively known as the Goto Islands. This time, we visited Fukue Island! From Fukue Port, where we arrived by boat, we traveled by car. Traffic was light, making for a safe and enjoyable sightseeing drive. However, be careful when going to high ground or along the coast, as some roads are a bit steep and winding ⚠️ Goto is famous for Goto Udon! You can enjoy chilled udon noodles, characterized by their flat noodles, along with Goto beef. (Hot Goto Udon was also available.) If you want to experience nature, head to Onitake Mountain! ⛰️ You can feel the vast, endless expanse of land. You can also see the runway of Goto Fukue Airport from the hilltop, so if you're lucky, you can enjoy watching planes take off and land! ✨ There's also a Goto udon restaurant on the grounds of Onitake, so you can enjoy the scenery while taking a stroll after filling your stomach. If you want to see the ocean, head to Kojuko Beach! 🏝️ The crystal-clear water and white sand are beautiful. When I went, it was before the official beach season so there weren't many people, but apparently it's a popular beach among locals during the summer season. Also, the soft-serve ice cream you can buy at the souvenir shop is exquisite! 😋 It contains nigari (magnesium chloride) and comes in three flavors: vanilla, black tea, and mixed. 🍦 If you want to enjoy the sunset, head to Osezaki Lighthouse! ☀️ It's the place where the sun sets latest on the Kyushu mainland, and the view from the lighthouse is spectacular! A photo of the lighthouse and sunset together is sure to be a memorable and cherished image. This is Nawo House: Nawo was my favorite stay from my whole 5 weeks in Japan! Peaceful, traditional and modern at once: it was a dream come true. Nawo is located on Goto Island - an island all the way south of Japan. It is a holiday destination for Japanese, but most foreigners don't know about the island: it only gets around 1500 international tourists each year! Goto was one of the best places we visited: beaches, nature, goto beef (delicious wagyu!), fresh seafood & and the nicest locals who wanted to share their home & culture. On my last day in Shizuoka, I visited Dojima (also known as Sanshirojima) in Nishi-Izu. This is the collective name for four islands: Denbeijima, Nakajima, Okisejima, and Takashima. Unfortunately, the tide was high when I went, so I missed the "island-linking sandbar crossing." Locals say that if the tide is below about 50 centimeters at low tide, you can walk onto the islands (only leading to Denbeijima). The sandbar crossing appears at low tide and lasts about an hour. If you come again, you might want to check the tide table and walk that mysterious sand path, about 200 meters long and 30 meters wide, for me. · Afterwards, I boarded the Dojima sightseeing boat and headed towards the "Skylight Cave." Sunlight streamed down from the cave ceiling, making the seawater shimmer like jade, a dreamlike scene. · In the afternoon, I returned to the city. In the Mishima area, you can easily use Didi Chuxing (overseas version) to visit Rakujuen Garden in Mishima City. In this Meiji-era aristocratic villa, you can almost feel the warmth of life for the nobility of the past. Across the street, Shirai Falls Park is a free and tranquil spot in the city, where small, exquisite waterfalls cascade gently down the rock face. Along the Kashita River Park, the water is so clear you can see the veins in every pebble; you can easily lose track of time there. · Finish your journey with a meal at the century-old Sakura-ya Eel Restaurant. Founded in 1856, this restaurant is famous for its Kanto-style eel. The eel, carefully prepared with water from the Fuji River, has a tender texture and a refreshing flavor. Once you start driving, you'll find the roads simple and easy to navigate, giving you much more freedom with a car. On the first day, it rained, but I enjoyed visiting churches and a museum. The Nizo Yamamoto Art Museum is a must-visit for Studio Ghibli fans! The second day was sunny. Onidake offered a refreshing breeze and breathtaking views of the sea. Takahama Beach exceeded expectations with its dazzling white sand and crystal-clear waters. The vibrant blue of the sea was stunning. Both the Goto Udon and the fresh seafood were absolutely delicious, so I highly recommend trying them. *Many izakayas were fully booked at night, so making reservations in advance is advisable if you plan to visit.

Onidake, a scoria cone towering over Fukue Island in the Goto Islands. It also has an observatory, which was featured in a movie, where you can enjoy a star-filled sky at night. The area is covered with short-cut grass, so even in summer, there are no annoying insects, making it a comfortable place to lie around and observe the stars. Enjoy the clear Milky Way, unique to this remote island with no city to the south. A car is required to visit.
