It was near Guilin. Famous karst mountains, fog, postcard-perfect landscapes. I wanted to go to the observation deck, but I'd taken the wrong bus. I realized it an hour later, when the asphalt ended. All around were rice terraces, water buffalo, and not a single sign in English. I had no phone reception. I got off at the last stop. An old man stood next to me with a basket of tangerines, looking at me as if I'd landed from Mars. First Encounter: A Language That Needs No Words 👴🍊 He came up, looked into my face, and simply handed me a tangerine. I ate it. He nodded and waved, "Follow me." We walked through a bamboo grove to the village. Houses with tiled roofs, chickens on the road, the smell of smoke and fried garlic. The old man led me into a courtyard where five other people were sitting. They were having lunch. They sat me down at the table. No questions asked. No documents required. They simply handed me chopsticks and pushed a bowl of rice towards me. A lunch I'll never forget 🍚🥬 On the table were stewed pumpkin, eggs with tomatoes, pickles, and tea from a thermos. Nothing fancy. But I've never eaten anything more delicious in my life. They laughed at my attempts to explain where I was from. I laughed at how they tried to teach me to say "rice" with the correct tone. We communicated with gestures, smiles, and food. It was the purest dialogue I've ever had. How the whole village saw me off 🥹 Then the old man's granddaughter arrived—the only one who knew a little English. She explained that the bus back would leave in two hours. We spent those two hours walking around the village. They showed me the ancestral temple, a buffalo named Da Huang, and a century-old tree where my great-grandmothers used to make dates. When the bus arrived, everyone came to see me off. An old man gave me a bag of tangerines for the road. I bowed. They waved and laughed. I got on the bus and cried. Not from sadness. From the feeling that somewhere in a Chinese village I now have a family who doesn't even know my name. Alipay and WeChat Pay don't always work in villages. ✅ Learn three phrases: "Xie Xie" (thank you), "Hao Chi" (delicious), "Zai Jian" (goodbye). ✅ Don't be afraid to eat street food and village food. It's often safer than city food. ✅ If you're invited to a table, sit down. Refusing can be offensive. I've never found that village on a map again. But I know it exists.
