During the Edo period, Mt. Oyama was popular among the common people as a sacred mountain. Although it is a mountain with an altitude of over 1,000m, it is popular because it is easy to climb. Sonbutsu Sanso is a mountain lodge at the top of Tonodake. If you stay here, you can enjoy the sunset, starry sky, and sunrise. The climb up Okura Ridge is finally coming to an end. After passing Kinhiyashi, there is a series of wooden stairs. Once you reach the top, you will reach Tonodake. Hanadate Sanso marks the end of the Okura Ridge. When you see this, you're almost at the junction with Mt. Nabewari, and beyond that is Mt. Tonodake. The view from here is truly amazing, and it's a perfect spot for a break. You can also get food. #mountaineering #photogenicspot #gw2022jp

#bucketlistdestinations Oyama-Afuri Shrine trail starts at Isehara Station (Odakyu from Shinjuku, ¥1,210, 70 min), then bus to the cable car (¥1,000 round trip, IC ok) to Oyama summit (1,252 m). I hiked down the old cedar trail toward Miyagase—moss on the 300-year-old Cryptomeria roots, fog so thick the trees looked like ink washes. Free to walk, no permit. Mistake: I went in January—ice under moss, nearly slid off the ridge. Best moss window is May–July after rain, or September humidity. A shrine priest at Afuri gave me a salted rice ball and said “the cedars drink the moss, the moss drinks the cloud.” Card works at the cable car, cash only at the trailhead tofu shop (¥400). Carry 1 L water; no springs reliable. The view of Lake Miyagase through the mist is the payoff. Should sacred mountains sell cable cars, or keep the moss for the pilgrims who climb?

This time, I went hiking in the Tanzawa-Oyama area, easily accessible from central Tokyo, using the Tanzawa-Oyama Free Pass A. It also includes "show-and-receive discounts" that are available just by showing the pass. It's recommended for both hikers and tourists/outings. In addition to unlimited rides on the Odakyu Line and Kanagawa Chuo Bus in the Tanzawa-Oyama area, you can choose whether or not to include the Oyama Cable Car. Adding a round trip on the Odakyu Line makes it even more economical.

I took the Odakyu Line to Isehara Station (700 JPY, IC card), then a 30-minute bus (500 JPY, IC card) to the Oyama Cable Car (820 JPY round trip, IC card). The Mossy Cedar Trail starts at the Oyama-Afuri Shrine (1,250 m) and winds through 1,000-year-old cedar trees with moss-covered trunks. I hiked 4 km (2 hours) to the Shimosha Shrine—the moss here is so deep it muffles footsteps. No permit, no fee. The trail is open year-round but icy in winter. I bought a 500 JPY “Tanzawa Nature Map” at the cable car station (cash) and followed it. Carry 1 L water; fountains at the shrines. IC cards work on trains/buses/cable car; cash for the map and shrine donations. Mistake: I wore a baseball cap—the cedar branches are low, and I got smacked repeatedly. Wear a hat with a brim or a hood. Kindness beat: a shrine priest gave me a moss-covered pinecone as a charm. “Yama no megumi o uketotte” (Receive the mountain’s blessings), he said. Should ancient cedars be protected by fences, or should visitors be trusted to respect their moss?

If you climb onto the "Wind Suspension Bridge," you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Mizunashi River flowing below and the entire park dyed in a gradient of red, yellow, and green! There were worshippers even on weekdays, so I enjoyed a quiet and relaxing time. It seems that events are held regularly, so it's a fun shrine to plan your next visit.
