4-Day "Special Forces" Ancient Architecture Tour in Liaodong
The priority order was Shenyang, Liaoyang, Haicheng, and Gaizhou, but we couldn't get a train ticket for one leg, so the actual order was Shenyang, Haicheng, Liaoyang, and Gaizhou. All four days were "special forces" style, and the itinerary can be split up.
⏰Travel dates: Sep 10–13, 2026
🗺️Purpose: Visiting Liao towers. Time was limited, so we'll visit several other historic sites in Shenyang next time. In Gaizhou, the main focus was Xuanzhen Temple, the second-oldest surviving wooden structure in Northeast China, dating back to the Ming Dynasty. It's second only to Fengguo Temple in Yixian and is quite rare in Liaodong.
Shenyang and Liaoyang have shared bikes, and Gaizhou has shared e-bikes. Haicheng requires walking. For the "three towers and one shed" (stone shed), you'll need to take local minibuses to the surrounding areas. The itinerary is quite tight, but it's doable.
⭕⭕⭕Day 1: Shenyang
⛩️T227 Tianjin to Shenyang North, 9:27 PM–7:25 AM. The sleeper train departs in the evening and arrives in the morning. Head straight to the morning market for breakfast upon arrival.
⛩️Huigong Morning Market. Navigate to Huigong East 1st Street; it's a 10-minute shared bike ride from Shenyang North. For breakfast, I recommend beef huoshao (baked flatbread) and wontons. Prices are very cheap. Remember to go early, as it closes at 9:00 AM. The same street is a morning market in the morning and a night market with barbecue in the evening.
🚇Metro Line 2, Financial Center Station to Liaoning Provincial Museum
⛩️Liaoning Provincial Museum. Start from the "Ancient Liaoning" exhibit on the 3rd floor. If you want to see the whole museum in detail, it takes 5 hours.
⛩️Visit White Tower Park – Wugou Jingguang Pagoda, the "Liao tower" that often gets confused. Shenyang has two white towers with similar names: the Wugou Jingguang Sarira Pagoda and the Wugou Jingguang Pagoda. A difference of two characters means a 1,000-year difference in construction time. If you're visiting Shenyang for historical sites, go see the Wugou Jingguang Sarira Pagoda, a real Liao tower.
⛩️Z188 Shenyang North to Haicheng, 5:20 PM–6:59 PM.
⭕⭕⭕Day 2: Haicheng. In the morning, visit the "one shed and three towers" in the surrounding area via public transport (I've written detailed notes on the public transport itinerary, scroll back if you need them). In the afternoon, explore the main attractions in the city. Minibuses to the surrounding areas of Haicheng start running after 5:00 AM and stop around 4:00 PM.
⛩️Gusao Stone Shed in Ximu Town – ⛩️Iron Tower in Ximu Town. 🚘Carpool (ask the hotel front desk for the local carpool group).
⛩️Golden Tower in Ximu Town. 🚶🏻♀️A 2.7 km walk one way. Enter from the intersection opposite Haicheng No. 3 Hospital in Ximu Town and return the same way.
⛩️Silver Tower. 🚐Take a minibus. Flag one down in front of Haicheng No. 3 Hospital. Take the Haicheng–Jiewen bus and tell the driver to drop you off at the Tazigou intersection for the Silver Tower. It's about a 10-minute walk. After seeing the Silver Tower, return to the intersection where you got off and flag down a bus in front of the small supermarket to go from Jiewen back to Haicheng.
⛩️Cuoshishan Park (Glazed Screen Wall, Kuixing Pavilion, Bao'an Temple). Get off at the South Gate station, 🚶🏻♀️10-minute walk to Cuoshishan Park.
⛩️Sanxue Temple 🚶🏻♀️Walk.
⛩️Shanxi Guild Hall (Haicheng Museum) 🚶🏻♀️Walk.
🥟For breakfast, I recommend the beef buns at Pangjie in Ximu Town. For dinner, I recommend the sauerkraut and fresh pork dumplings at Pangsaos in Haicheng.
⛩️K1229 Haicheng to Liaoyang, 7:12 PM–8:01 PM.
⭕⭕⭕Day 3: Liaoyang
⛩️Dongjing Mausoleum, bus 🚌. Not open; you have to peek through the cracks. Not recommended.
⛩️Dongjing City Ruins, bus 🚌. Visit Tianyou Gate. There are burial mounds in the park, but they are nothing special.
⛩️Guanyin Zen Temple, bus 🚌. I visited all the halls, but couldn't find any preserved murals. You can skip this.
⛩️Wang Erlie Memorial Hall, 🚲. Visit the former residence. The original birthday screen of Wang Erlie is in the Liaoyang Museum; the memorial hall displays a replica.
⛩️Cao Xueqin Memorial Hall, diagonally across from the Wang Erlie Memorial Hall, a 5-minute walk. This is the former residence of Cao Xueqin's ancestors.
⛩️Liaoyang Museum (Liaoyang Han-Wei Mural Hall, Liaoyang Folklore Museum). The 3 halls are adjacent but in different courtyards. The Han-Wei Mural Hall has 2 replica tomb chambers, which are very detailed. The original Liaoyang Han-Wei murals are in the provincial museum but are rarely exhibited.
⛩️White Tower Park (Pinghu Pavilion → Guangyou Temple → White Tower → Yuantong Zen Temple → Mantetsu Library) are all in the same park. Allow about 2 hours.
⛩️K716 Liaoyang to Gaizhou, 4:33 PM–6:10 PM.
🌰I recommend the chestnut cakes at Guangyou Temple, 10 yuan a pack. The filling has chestnut pieces and isn't too sweet.
⭕⭕⭕Day 4: Gaizhou is great for a weekend trip. Eat barbecue in the evening, stroll around the ancient city in the morning, and head to the beach in the afternoon. You can explore the ancient city by e-bike or on foot.
⛩️Xuanzhen Temple. It's only open in the morning. The Taoist priest on duty was in a bad mood and didn't allow photos inside, which was a pity; I'll have to go back another time. Visually, it's much less impressive than Fengguo Temple. It's a Ming Dynasty structure, but the main hall is small.
⛩️City Wall, near the East Gate. There are remnants of Ming Dynasty brick and stone. The surrounding area is a residential neighborhood with little protection. Just stop by for a quick visit.
⛩️God of Wealth Temple, diagonally opposite the city wall. The building is new.
⛩️Gaizhou Bell and Drum Tower, not open. Peek through the cracks and take photos from the outside.
⛩️Shen Yanyi Memorial Hall, not open.
⛩️Puji Temple, the building is new.
⛩️T131/134 Gaizhou to Tianjin, 2:19 PM–10:32 PM.
Gaizhou cuisine is sweet, salty, and spicy. I recommend the barbecue, stir-fried dishes, and grilled or mixed chicken racks—they all taste different and are delicious.
