Self-driving tours to summer resorts are best done in August and September.
01 Hulunbuir City | Inner Mongolia
Summer in Hulunbuir is the kind of summer that makes you want to quit your job. At the end of August, the grasslands begin to be cleared, a tapestry of golden and emerald green, more captivating than pure green. Wake up at 5:30 am to watch the sunrise from the highest point along the Morigele River. Morning mist rises from the river, and herds of cattle move slowly through it; at that moment, you'll feel your phone can't capture even a fraction of its beauty.
🍜 At noon, find a yurt run by a herdsman on the grassland. Hand-pulled mutton with wild chive blossom sauce—the aroma alone fills your nostrils. A meal costing around 70-80 yuan per person is enough to fill you up.
📍 In the afternoon, drive along the border highway from Qika to Jiuka. The road conditions are good, but there are many curves; beginners should drive slowly.
⚠️ Don't park randomly on the roadside to take photos; some areas are no-parking zones, and the fines are hefty. In the evening, return to Hailar city and buy a bag of freshly roasted beef jerky at the Xishan Night Market—the more you chew, the more fragrant it becomes. If you're staying in a yurt at night, ask beforehand if it has a private bathroom, as many yurts require a long walk to the toilet at night.
02 Hengshui City | Hebei Province
Hengshui isn't just about middle schools; Hengshui Lake is cooler than you might imagine in the summer. Go to the lotus area on the east bank of the lake around 7 or 8 am. Water droplets still cling to the lotus leaves, egrets stand on the shallows, and the wind rustles the reeds—it's a truly peaceful experience. 🛶 I recommend taking a small, hand-cranked wooden boat into the reed beds. The boatman will point out bird nests; the whole trip takes about 40 minutes and costs 60 yuan per boat, seating four or five people, which is very economical when split among the passengers.
🍜 For lunch, go to a farmhouse by the lake for a whole fish feast. The stewed mixed fish with cornbread is their signature dish; I could easily eat two bowls of fish soup with cornbread. In the afternoon, cycle around the lake. There's a dedicated cycling path on the south bank with plenty of shade; bike rental is 20 yuan per hour.
⚠️ The sun is still quite strong around 3 or 4 pm, so be sure to reapply sunscreen. For those with elderly people or children, it's recommended to only walk along the east bank boardwalk; it's gentle and easy to walk, and you can finish the whole thing in about an hour.
03 Guangzhou | Guangdong
Guangzhou in August is truly hot, but you'll forgive it for the dim sum. Go to Chen Clan Academy at 8 am; it's recommended to enter as soon as it opens. With fewer people, you can clearly see the gray plaster and ceramic sculptures on the roof. Those little figures and lions are so lifelike that people looking down at their phones won't even notice them.
📍 After visiting, walk ten minutes to Xihua Road and have a bowl of Yuanji Rice Noodle Rolls. They're freshly made and steamed, with skin so thin you can see the shrimp inside, and it costs six yuan a serving. In the afternoon, go to Baiyun Mountain. Don't take the main road; enter from the west gate and walk along the Qianchideng Trail. The shade is excellent, making it three or four degrees cooler than outside. Enjoy the breeze and the city views from the mountaintop plaza.
🍜 In the evening, go to the Canton Tower. Don't be silly and buy a ticket to the top floor. Take a walk along the riverside road at the foot of the tower. At 6:30 pm, the lights come on, and the Canton Tower's reflection in the Pearl River is more beautiful and free than going up the tower.
⚠️ If you want to go to Chimelong, it's best to buy tickets a day in advance. Tickets are much more expensive on-site, and during summer vacation, the queues can be as long as an hour. If you're bringing children, remember to bring a change of clothes, as there are many water activities.
04 Zunyi City | Guizhou
Places like Chishui Danxia are perfect for curing the "summer lethargy" feeling. Entering the waterfall scenic area in the morning, you're hit by a wave of water vapor. You can hear the thunderous roar even before you see the waterfall. By the time you reach the viewing platform, your clothes are already half-soaked, but the coolness is truly invigorating.
📍 It's recommended to wear non-slip sandals, as the boardwalk is slippery year-round, and ordinary flip-flops are easy to slip on. For lunch, eat Chishui tofu at the entrance of the scenic area. It's as tender as steamed egg, dipped in chili sauce, and served with a bowl of bamboo shoot stew with cured pork. It costs just over 30 yuan per person. In the afternoon, I went to Foguangyan (Buddha's Light Rock). There were many steps, and it took about 40 minutes to climb, but seeing the huge red rock face at the top made it all worthwhile, even with sore legs.
⏰ After 3 PM, the sunlight is at its lowest, making the rock face the reddest and the best place for photos.
⚠️ Food inside the scenic area is relatively expensive, so bring your own water and snacks. If you're not in great shape, go directly to Yanziyan (Swallow Rock); it's not as high, and the scenery is just as good.
05 Tianjin
Tianjin is best visited in the evening. It's too sunny during the day, but the evenings are so comfortable. Around 4 PM, go to the Five Great Avenues. Don't take the horse-drawn carriages; instead, rent a shared bike and ride slowly. Munan Road and Machang Road are lined with old Western-style houses, and the plane trees filter the sunlight into fragments on the ground.
📍 Ride to Minyuan Square, sit on the steps, and eat a Kang Le red bean popsicle. The mung bean flavor is very strong, and it costs five yuan. In the evening, head to the Italian Style Area. The tour groups have dispersed, the streets quiet down, find an outdoor spot for a craft beer, and watch the pigeons rise and fall in Marco Polo Square.
🍜 In the evening, go to Liaoning Road Snack Street. Eat your way through the street food stalls like steamed pear cake, jianbing guozi (Chinese crepe), and guoba cai (crispy rice crust with vegetables). For about 50 yuan per person, you can try seven or eight different dishes.
⚠️ The Olympic Sports Center and Fantawild are both outside the city. Unless you're specifically going to see a concert or ride a ride, it's not worth the trip. The Tianjin Eye in the city center offers a much better night view. The next morning, you can go to the Northwest Corner for breakfast, but you must arrive before 7 am; after 8 am, the queues will leave you questioning your existence.
06 Yulin City | Shaanxi
Yulin is the kind of hidden gem you'll visit and tell your friends, "Why is nobody here?" In the morning, head to Wave Valley. The red of the Danxia landforms combined with the morning light makes it look like the earth is on fire.
📍 Take the boardwalk down from the entrance to the valley floor, then circle back up. The whole trip takes about two hours. There aren't many steps, so even elderly people can manage.
⏰ The light is softest before 10 AM. After 10 AM, the direct sunlight makes the red rock formations appear whitish, significantly affecting photo quality. For lunch, return to Yulin city for a "Three Delicacies Platter," featuring a rich broth served with fried cakes and yellow steamed buns. It's a hearty meal for about 30 yuan per person. In the afternoon, visit Hongshixia Gorge. The gorge isn't long, but the cliff faces are covered with inscriptions from the Song and Ming dynasties; you'll see them every short distance.
🍜 In the evening, drive to Jiaxian County and find a farmhouse restaurant by the Yellow River. Sit in the courtyard watching the river bend below, enjoying a braised Yellow River carp—the fish is firm and not muddy.
⚠️ Some areas of Wave Valley lack guardrails; don't back away while taking photos—it's really dangerous.
07 Jinan City | Shandong
Jinan's spring water is much more reliable than air conditioning. Go to Baotu Spring at 6 AM, before the tour groups arrive, and watch the three springs bubbling upwards; the water is so clear you can count the coins at the bottom. After seeing the springs, walk along the moat to Black Tiger Spring. Locals are collecting water there; you can also fill a bottle, take a sip, and it's cool and slightly sweet.
🍜 At noon, go to Furong Street for fried dough twists with sweet porridge. The freshly made twists have a crispy outer layer that crumbles with every bite. In the afternoon, go to Thousand Buddha Mountain. Don't take the path with the main gate steps; enter from the east gate and take the winding mountain road. The slope is gentle, there's plenty of shade, and you can reach the top in half an hour. Overlooking the entire city of Jinan, Daming Lake looks like an emerald set among the buildings.
📍 After descending the mountain, go to the south gate of Daming Lake and walk along the lake to Chaoran Tower. This path is most comfortable to walk in the evening; the willow branches along the lake droop into the water, and the breeze is cool. ⚠️ Baotu Spring is incredibly crowded on weekends; try to go on a weekday rather than a weekend.
08 Haibei Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture | Qinghai
The Qilian Mountains hide away summer. Starting from Xining in the morning, drive along G227, passing through the Dabanshan Tunnel. Emerging from the tunnel, the view opens up dramatically: snow-capped mountains in the distance, grasslands nearby, and herds of yaks—like a flowing painting hanging outside the car window.
📍 Arrive in Qilian County at noon and have a bowl of yak yogurt. It's so sour it'll make you shudder, but add two spoonfuls of sugar and mix it in; the texture is smooth and creamy like ice cream. In the afternoon, go to Ami Dongsuo, also known as Niuxin Mountain. At the foot of the mountain are rapeseed fields, further up are pine forests, and then snow-capped peaks—a single mountain showcasing all four seasons.
⏰ The light is best after 4 PM; the setting sun paints the snow-capped peaks gold. The next day, we went to the Heihe Grand Canyon. The road wasn't easy; there were many loose rocks, so cars had to be careful, but it was worth it—the river roared through the canyon, and the stone walls on both sides pressed down on us, making us feel incredibly small. The meadows near Lenglongling are suitable for camping, but the temperature drops to just a few degrees Celsius at night, so bring enough sleeping bags.
⚠️ Above 3,500 meters altitude, don't run or jump; you'll get a headache.
From late August to early September, the grasslands begin to change color, the snow-capped mountains become even whiter, the crowds recede, and gas prices drop. Choose a city, fill up the tank, and drive north or west; the last vestiges of summer are right under your wheels.
