I saw a lot of signs with "Maru-Kei" written on them. I wondered what it was? 🤔 So I went in. At first glance, it wasn't a big place, and I thought it was just a shop selling Arita ware, but... It was a veritable department store of pottery, with three floors including a small room! There was a lot of pottery, and some were quite expensive, so I was nervous 😅 You can see and buy a variety of pottery, from tableware to frames and vases. After checking out the pottery in Hasami, Nagasaki, I took a short detour to visit the [Oniki Terraced Rice Fields]. It is said to be one of Japan's Top 100 Terraced Rice Fields. There are two observation decks, so I headed to the Terraced Rice Field Observation Deck first. The road was narrow, so I was a bit nervous driving up there. Then, I moved to the Mountaintop Observation Deck, which is located even higher up. The rice planting had just finished, but the rural landscape and tea plantations, looking as if they were stacked in endless layers toward the foot of the mountain, were absolutely stunning. Amazingly, there are about 400 terraced rice fields here! The event of lighting candles in the terraced rice fields, the [Oniki Lantern Festival], just ended last week, but the next major event is the [Oniki Terraced Rice Field Festival], held annually around the Autumnal Equinox. Around 100 scarecrows reflecting current events and popular trends are displayed, and there's also a scarecrow contest and local produce for sale. On my way back from seeing Hasami ware, I stopped by the Nishinohara area, which apparently used to be a pottery factory run by a kiln owner. One of the retro buildings on the spacious grounds, surrounded by beautiful fresh greenery, is [Isozaki Coffee Shady]. The atmosphere is absolutely wonderful! The aroma of roasting coffee wafted outside, so I took a break in the cafe area. I was lucky because their Instagram says the cafe is only open on weekends! The iced coffee was fragrant, refreshing, and absolutely delicious! The Isozaki brand coffee I bought (200g, 1,350 yen) is also very tasty and highly recommended. I went to the Hasami Pottery Festival 2023, which is held every year from April 29th to May 5th ☺️ This time, I went to the main venue, Yakimono Park. Many potters and manufacturers are set up. Among them, the one I was looking for was the super popular "natural69". The line was huge, but I could buy the plates I wanted at a reasonable price, so I put up with it 😁 I looked around looking for small bowls. The number of stores that accept cashless payments is increasing every year, but there are also many stores that only accept cash, so I think it's a good idea to prepare both. There are stores around Yakimono Park as well as venues, so do your research beforehand. Life can't be done casually, and the dishes are even more so. After we bought it, everyone was hungry. Lunch is arranged in a Taonon restaurant. The ceramic craftsman called himself a pottery farmer and also reflected the serious mentality of being a craftsman and taking every piece of his work seriously. The restaurant in the Japanese countryside is very good. The whole restaurant is a large garden. A small road guides guests to the wooden houses on the river. The main focus here is the real estate shed wood and vegetables, the locally-produced miso, and the tea of the Yeoksang Township Liuxuan Tea House. Of course, the tableware and tea set used are also locally produced by "Pozzo Jian Shao". If you make an appointment in advance, you can also experience the fun of making a ready-to-baked pizza from the dough. The kiln for baking pizza is also transformed from the kiln that was previously fired with pottery!
