I'd recommend crashing for the night at one of two spots: 🌊 Mossel Bay — If you're looking to cut your driving time short for the day. 🌿 Wilderness — If you want to wake up surrounded by lush nature, beaches, and dense forests. 📍 My pick: Wilderness. 🚗 A car is a must here—the journey between these spots is half the adventure. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🌿 DAY 6 — WILDERNESS → KNYSNA Ocean, forests, and lagoons The Garden Route looks nothing like the dry savannas most people picture when they think of Africa. Here, lush coastal forests hug the ocean, and the roads wind through unbelievably green landscapes. Spend your morning exploring the Wilderness area. Then, make your way over to Knysna. Must-sees: 🌊 Knysna Heads — The iconic sea cliffs guarding the entrance to the lagoon. 🚶 Knysna Waterfront — Perfect for a sunset stroll, dinner, and a chill evening. 🌲 Scenic viewpoints dotted around the lagoon. 📍 Where to stay: Knysna. 💡 It’s a solid 500 km from Cape Town to Knysna, so I highly advise against trying to tackle it in a single day. Break up the drive and savor the Garden Route at your own pace. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🏖️ DAY 7 — KNYSNA → PLETTENBERG BAY → TSITSIKAMMA Today is easily one of the most stunning legs of the trip. The drive takes a few hours, so it's best to hit the road in the morning and skip making too many pit stops. Once you get checked in: 🦁 Head out on your very first safari game drive. FOR THE CAPE PENINSULA + GARDEN ROUTE 🚗 Renting a car is your absolute best bet. It gives you the ultimate freedom to pull over at scenic viewpoints, switch up your route on the fly, and totally ditch any strict schedules. Just keep in mind: ✔️ South Africa drives on the left side of the road; ✔️ Never leave your valuables visible in the car; ✔️ Avoid planning long drives after dark; ✔️ Download offline maps ahead of time. FOR SAFARI You can keep your rental car and do self-drive safaris along the designated roads inside the national park. Or, you can book guided game drives with a ranger. 📍 For self-driving into Addo, make absolutely sure you have your passport and vehicle registration documents on hand.

The path is free, paved, fenced at cliff edge, with 20+ named viewpoints; I counted 6 whales breaching between Gearing Point and Siever’s Paddock in 90 minutes—no binoculars needed. Grotto Beach at the end is a 2 km white sweep, safe swim flagged in season, no entry fee. Mistake: I started at 11 am and the westerly wind by 1 pm cut visibility; locals say 8–10 am is the whale window. While strolling through Hermanus, we stumbled upon a tiny but absolutely fantastic spot — Walkerbay Fish and Chips Takeaway 📌 Shop 17, Village Square, 104 Main Rd The location is unbeatable: the oceanfront promenade starts literally just a few steps away. So, the best move is to grab your food to go and head straight to the water. We had been on the hunt for some good fish and chips, and this place totally hit the spot. The fish was top-notch: perfectly tender on the inside with a mouthwatering, crispy batter on the outside — exactly how it should be. The menu isn't huge — just a few items, but everything is straightforward and classic. We went with dishes priced at 130 Rands each: 📌 Hake with fries 📌 Hake with a side salad I really loved that you could get a lighter, salad-based alternative instead of just the usual fast-food combo. The joint itself is pretty small: neat and clean inside, with a couple of tables if you don't feel like wandering far. The vibe is super chill and laid-back. The staff is incredibly friendly — happily walking you through the menu and helping you decide. Eating it with an ocean view makes the food taste even better. A hot bag of fish and chips, the sea breeze, and the sound of crashing waves — the ultimate combo!!! 💕 If you ever find yourself in Hermanus, definitely add this spot to your itinerary!

One day, we accidentally strayed outside the safe zone. We only had about 200 meters to walk to the supermarket. At that moment, two healthy black guys decided to rob us. We were very lucky that we were fast runners. We managed to escape, call a taxi, and head back to the hotel! 🌿 But despite all this, Africa has another side. Stunning nature! Grabbing fish and chips by the ocean is an experience in itself. You can get a takeout portion and eat on a bench or right on the seaside rocks. South Africa turned out to be one of the most vibrant countries I've ever visited. In just a few days, we experienced an incredibly diverse country: stunning ocean landscapes, mountain roads, world-class wineries, and wild nature. The Cape Town area stood out the most. The roads here hug the ocean and mountains, and the scenery constantly forces you to pull over for photos. Cape Town. Stellenbosch. Hermanus. These are the cities we managed to explore on our trip. Since this journey covered multiple countries—specifically South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Botswana—we dedicated 5 days to South Africa. On our first day, we explored on foot. We popped into the diamond museum, got a fascinating English-guided tour, and were treated to drinks at the end. Afterward, they offered us some of their jewelry to buy. We strolled around Bo-Kaap, where things felt a little edgy, as we had been warned about nearby slums. They're easy to spot on the map—if there's no green space in the city, you shouldn't go there; it could cost you your life or get you mugged. The city center, however, is very safe. We went up Table Mountain and watched the sunset with a bottle of wine and some snacks—I'm attaching a photo of a pretty decent wine to this post 😉 The next day, we rented a compact Volkswagen Vivo from AVIS in the city and headed straight to Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope (we always used this company to book cars across different African countries and never faced any hidden traps, scams, or anything like that). By the way, they didn't even ask for an international driver's permit; our Russian ones were perfectly fine. On the way, we stopped by Fox Beach to see the penguins. Baboons were occasionally running across the city roofs. Strictly no feeding, and it's best to keep your distance. The cape is stunningly beautiful—an absolute must-visit. We traveled in June, so the roads were often foggy and overcast. When driving up the mountain, visibility was zero past arm's length, so we had to crawl along with our hazard lights on. We drove to Hermanus for whale watching. Sadly, we were out of luck with the weather in Hermanus—a severe storm canceled our tour, and we never got to see the whales themselves. Still, the raging ocean, thick fog, and massive waves created a very special vibe. Hermanus is a gorgeous, safe town with lots of police on the streets; it kind of reminded me of Holland. I have to give a special shoutout to the wineries. We visited a few estates, but our favorites were the cozy, boutique ones where tastings are unhurried, and each wine is paired perfectly with chocolate or snacks. Even if you're not a huge wine fan, it's worth coming here just for the gorgeous views, tranquil atmosphere, and amazing food. Delaire Graff Estate is a spectacular mountain winery with a breathtaking atmosphere. Fun fact: a scene from the movie "Blood Diamond" was filmed here. Waterford Estate was our absolute favorite. They paired each wine variety with different pieces of chocolate, which made the flavors open up incredibly. The prices here are lower than at Graff. They also took us down into the barrel cellars and explained the winemaking process. Our third winery was Groot Constantia. We found out in advance that you can taste the wine favored by Napoleon and European royalty here. And honestly, the Grand Constance is a delicious wine—sweet but not cloying. We ordered a tasting of 5 other wines, but we didn't really care for the rest at all, even though they served them with interesting snacks and a pairing guide. There was goat cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, grilled eggplant, strawberries, and fried mushrooms. The red wine paired with the fried veggies, white with the tomatoes and strawberries, and rosé with the goat cheese. We tried the local cuisine at a restaurant called Marco's African Place. We left with the best impressions. Highly recommend, 5 stars for this spot. Traveling by rental car turned out to be the absolute best way to see the country. The roads are mostly great, and nearly every route turns into a scenic road trip. Evenings and nights in July are freezing here, and it rains during the day, so I definitely advise packing a windbreaker or a light puffer jacket. Outside of tourist spots, unexpected situations can occasionally pop up, so it pays to be cautious and never leave your belongings unattended. South Africa left a massive impression on me. It's a country of contrasts, where luxury wineries sit right next to rugged ocean coastlines, and every day brings something new. Despite minor hiccups and unpredictable weather, the trip was unforgettable, and I'd gladly come back here in a heartbeat.

We stayed at Hermanus Champagne Accommodation for two nights and couldn't have been happier with our choice. We were looking for something with great value for money, and it absolutely met our expectations. We paid 2,250 rand for two nights in a double room—such a great deal! 📌 Convenient location: the ocean is right around the corner, and shops are just a short walk away. Plus, there's secure parking in the courtyard. Check-in was an absolute breeze. We were greeted upon arrival and handed the gate access code and our room key. Our room had a private en-suite bathroom. Everything was spotless, and they provided towels, a hairdryer, and all the essentials for a comfortable stay. We really loved the communal areas, too: a spacious living room and a fully stocked kitchen with tea, coffee, and all the necessary cookware. Each room has its own designated shelves, which is super convenient and keeps things organized. There's also a shared fridge, and the kitchen is large enough to cook proper meals! Out in the yard, there's a BBQ and lounge area—a perfect spot to chill with a glass of wine after a day of exploring. The house itself is full of character and history; it's older but incredibly well-maintained and cozy. All in all, it’s a wonderful place to come back to and unwind after spending the day by the ocean)
