Japan by train can look intimidating before your first trip. JR. Private railways. Subways. Local trains. Limited Express. Shinkansen. IC cards. Reserved seats. Non-reserved seats. And then there are approximately 47 different signs telling you where to stand. 😂 But once you understand the basic system, travelling around Japan becomes surprisingly straightforward. Here’s the simple version I wish every first-time visitor had before arriving: 🚆 1. LOCAL TRAINS = GET AROUND THE CITY These are your everyday trains. Think Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and other urban areas. They usually make more stops and are perfect for shorter journeys. You’ll encounter JR lines, subway systems and private railway companies depending on the city. 🚄 2. SHINKANSEN = TRAVEL BETWEEN MAJOR CITIES This is the famous bullet train. The major routes include: Tokaido: Tokyo → Nagoya → Kyoto → Shin-Osaka Sanyo: Shin-Osaka → Hiroshima → Hakata Tohoku: Tokyo → Sendai → Morioka → Shin-Aomori Hokkaido: Shin-Aomori → Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Hokuriku: Tokyo → Nagano → Kanazawa → Tsuruga Joetsu: Tokyo → Niigata Kyushu: Hakata → Kagoshima-Chuo There are also the Akita, Yamagata and Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen routes. So if your itinerary is: Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka you’re basically looking at the Tokaido Shinkansen. 🎫 3. IC CARD = YOUR EVERYDAY FRIEND Suica, PASMO, ICOCA and other compatible IC cards make short-distance travel much easier. Tap in. Ride. Tap out. They can also be used at many convenience stores, vending machines and lockers. But don’t assume an IC card works literally everywhere — some transport services and areas don’t accept them. Look for the IC symbol. 💺 4. SHINKANSEN SEATS You’ll generally see: NON-RESERVED Choose an available seat in the appropriate car. RESERVED You get an assigned seat. GREEN CAR More space and a more premium experience. Some Shinkansen services are reserved-seat only, so check the specific train before travelling. 🧳 5. BIG SUITCASE? PAY ATTENTION. This is one of the things tourists often discover too late. On the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen, luggage with total dimensions over 160 cm requires a seat with oversized-baggage space to be reserved in advance. So if you’re travelling with a huge suitcase: CHECK YOUR BAGGAGE BEFORE BOOKING YOUR SEAT. It can save you a lot of hassle at the station. 🎟️ 6. DO YOU NEED A JAPAN RAIL PASS? Don’t automatically assume you do. This is one of the biggest Japan train myths. Compare: Point-to-point tickets vs. Regional rail passes vs. Nationwide Japan Rail Pass If you’re mainly travelling Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka, a nationwide pass isn’t automatically the obvious choice. The right option depends on your exact route and how much long-distance JR travel you’re doing. 🍱 7. YES, YOU CAN EAT ON THE SHINKANSEN Long-distance trains such as the Shinkansen are different from crowded city trains. Buying an ekiben at the station and eating during the journey is part of the experience. On local and subway trains, however, eating is generally best avoided. 📱 8. CHECK THE ROUTE BEFORE YOU LEAVE Japan has multiple railway companies operating in the same cities. So don’t just look at the train name. Check: Station → Line → Direction → Train type → Platform → Destination Apps such as Google Maps, Japan Travel by NAVITIME and Jorudan can help with routes, fares and schedules. 🇯🇵 THE EASY WAY TO THINK ABOUT JAPAN RAIL Around the city → JR / subway / private railway Between major cities → Shinkansen / Limited Express Short everyday journeys → IC card Long-distance route → Compare individual tickets + regional/national passes Once you understand those four things, Japan’s train system suddenly makes a lot more sense. And honestly? The train system is one of the reasons Japan is so rewarding to travel independently. You don’t need to understand every railway line in the country. Next to the shrine is Ichiza Suspension Bridge. Once you cross the suspension bridge, you will find a lush natural environment that is completely different from the city. The air is like negative ions that give you a new energy. The area around Komagatake Shrine is full of natural attractions, such as beautiful waterfalls and emerald green pools. Standing in the shrine grounds, a solemn atmosphere and magnificent mountains spread out before you. I was moved as if my heart was cleansed. On the way, if you cross the suspension bridge, you will encounter a beautiful waterfall and edge while experiencing a fresh air that is clearly different from the city, like negative ions? I had my first glamping experience at Kiyosato Oka no Koen Auto Campground in Yamanashi! It was a bit chilly in Kiyosato at the end of October, but the food I ate outside was amazing! There were heaters provided in the tents, so I could sleep in a nice, warm bed! 🙌🏻 The glamping plan includes cooking equipment and ingredients, so even beginners can relax! The starry sky at night was so stunningly beautiful, I was blown away! ✨ (It was so close you could barely see it in the photos!) There was a hot spring nearby, so I was able to warm up after chilling outside. ♨️ It was my first time glamping, and it was so much fun! #fallingforfall Yamanashii in Japan is well known with their fruits production. but what makes me stunned is there beautiful Autumn view. Aside from im very close to see Mt. Fuji-san, I look around and oh my ao beautiful country. So refreshing and is the one that I can only see in painting. sureal.. I travel from tokyo to osaka to kyoto then Mt. Kiyosato Pouni Ranch (Dude Ranch) is a small ranch in the suburbs of Yamanashi Prefecture. It provides fresh wild vegetable meals and various opportunities to interact with small animals! Kiyoharu Art Village is located on the former site of Kiyoharu Elementary School in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture. I climbed Mt. Hinata in the Southern Alps of Yamanashi Prefecture! The summit, also known as the beach in the sky, is a truly beautiful white beach! The weathered white sand of the granite creates a beautiful beach-like view. It was very windy and cold at the summit! It must have snowed the day before, because a little bit of snow was peeking out from under the sand. On the way back from hiking Mt. Hinatayama, I went to Ojiro no Yu to warm myself up. The hot spring here is a super-concentrated hot spring that springs from deep underground on the banks of the Ojiro River. The water is filtered through a layer of quartz (granite) and is rich in minerals, which is said to help relieve fatigue and have a thermal effect. I climbed Mt. Mizugaki and on the way back I saw Fudo Falls. Perhaps because there wasn't much water, it wasn't the waterfall I had imagined, but the water was very clear and the sound of the water flowing down was soothing. The path from Mt. Mizugaki to Fudo Falls was slippery in some places and difficult to walk on, probably because it had rained the day before, but I was able to walk while being soothed by the sound of the babbling river and forest bathing. #Mt.
