The Yungang Grottoes, originally named Lingyan Temple and Shifo Temple, are located 17 km west of Datong city in Shanxi Province, on the southern slope of Wuzhou Mountain. They are one of China’s most famous grotto groups. The carving of the Yungang Grottoes began during the Northern Wei period. In the third year of the Huangshi era (398), Emperor Daowu Tuoba Gui moved the capital from Shengle (now Helingeer County) to Pingcheng (now Datong city), making Wuzhou Mountain a key transportation hub between Shengle and Pingcheng. After Emperor Wencheng Tuoba Jun ascended the throne, he appointed the monk Tan Yao to lead the restoration project. With Emperor Wencheng’s support, Tan Yao chose the spiritually rich Wuzhou Mountain to “carve the mountain rock walls, open five caves, and sculpt one Buddha statue in each, the tallest 70 feet, the next 60 feet, with magnificent and extraordinary decorations, unmatched in the era.” Most of the Yungang caves were completed before Emperor Xiaowen Yuan Hong moved the capital to Luoyang, but the statues continued to be carved until the Zhengguang period (520–525). The carving of the Yungang Grottoes lasted about 150 years, spanning the Northern Wei, Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, and Tang dynasties. Today, there are 45 main caves, 252 niches of various sizes, and more than 59,000 stone sculptures, making it a treasure trove of Chinese grotto art. As a grotto authorized by the royal family, the Yungang Grottoes reflect the ambition of the Northern Wei dynasty. Restored Scene of the Eastern Han Mural Tomb in Helingeer · Associated Ancient Tomb: Eastern Han Huwuhuan Commandant Tomb in Helingeer, Hohhot (officially named "Xiaobanshen Han Tomb," a nationally protected cultural heritage site). · Artifact Features: · The murals cover officials’ travels, farming, banquets, city architecture, and more, praised as a "pictorial historical record," vividly recreating the administrative and daily life of the mid-to-late Eastern Han frontier regions. · The arched tomb passage, brick-paved floor, and murals of chariots, horses, figures, and pavilions on the walls are typical examples of Han Dynasty tomb art. Painted Wooden Coffin of the Northern Wei · Associated Ancient Tomb: Specific tomb not clearly indicated, but the artifact dates to the Northern Wei period. · Artifact Features: · Only four side panels remain, restored to a shape wider at the front and narrower at the back. · The paintings depict ox carts, men and women in Han-style clothing, mounted archery hunting, flying birds, and running beasts, illustrating the fusion of agricultural and nomadic cultures. The front side panel shows the tomb owner seated with attendants nearby, reflecting the historical background of ethnic integration during the Northern Wei.

On June 17th, visit two iconic Qing Dynasty ancient buildings in Qingcheng: the Residence of Princess Heshuo Kejing and the General's Office of Suiyuan City. One witnesses the marriage alliance between the Manchu and Mongol peoples and ethnic integration, while the other guards the northern frontier and oversees military and political affairs. The two are less than three kilometers apart, one soft and one hard, together forming a complete history of Qingcheng's Qing Dynasty frontier. First stop: Explanation of the Residence of Princess Heshuo Kejing The courtyard before you, with its red walls and black tiles, is the Residence of Princess Heshuo Kejing, known as the "First Residence West of the Capital," and is the best-preserved Qing Dynasty princess residence in the country. The residence was built in the 42nd year of Emperor Kangxi's reign and served as the palace for Princess Kejing, the emperor's sixth daughter. Please look at the main gate, where a bilingual plaque in Chinese and Mongolian hangs above. The eaves are painted with the standard royal palace patterns of the capital, and the stone lions in front of the gate are solemn and majestic. The entire courtyard was constructed according to royal palace regulations. At 19 years old, Princess Kejing was sent to marry into the Khalkha Mongols in northern Inner Mongolia. The Qing court specially chose this location to build the residence as her home and administrative center. Entering the gate and passing through the first courtyard, the gate ahead is the Ceremony Gate. In Qing ritual protocol, the Ceremony Gate was the gate of etiquette, usually kept closed, only opened when princes or envoys visited. Civil and military attendants could only pass through side doors, strictly observing social hierarchy. The princess residence faces south with the Daqing Mountain at its back, featuring a typical four-courtyard layout along a central axis. The architecture combines Central Plains construction techniques with northern grassland characteristics, exemplifying the cultural integration of Manchu, Han, and Mongol peoples. Passing through the Ceremony Gate, the main hall before you is Jingyi Hall, the political hall of the residence. Many visitors mistakenly think this was the princess's bedroom, but it was actually where Princess Kejing handled state affairs. She was not merely a princess sent for marriage alliance; during the Yongzheng era, she was promoted to Gurun Princess, wielding significant political power granted by the court. The grassland people respectfully called her the "Haibang Princess," meaning a princess who could participate in political discussions. She received Mongol princes here, mediated tribal disputes, led people in farming and trade between Mongols and Han, greatly easing ethnic tensions and stabilizing the northern grasslands. The entire residence follows a "front court for official affairs, rear court for living quarters" layout. Jingyi Hall is the administrative area, while the rear courtyard is the living quarters for the princess and her attendants. If the princess residence was the Qing court's affectionate bond with the grasslands, then the General's Office we will visit next was the military and political shield guarding the northern frontier. Second stop: General's Office of Suiyuan City We have now arrived at the General's Office of Suiyuan City, known as the "First Residence South of the Desert." There is a folk saying: "One general's residence is half the history of Qingcheng." This office was built in the second year of Emperor Qianlong's reign, more than seventy years after the princess residence. It was the office and residence of the Qing Dynasty General of Suiyuan City and the highest military and political center in the southern Mongolian desert region at the time. First, notice the blue brick screen wall at the south end, inscribed with the four characters "Ping Fan Shuo Mo," meaning "Shielding the northern desert," highlighting the office's mission to guard the frontier. To strengthen border defense, the Qing government dispatched Eight Banners troops from Shanxi to build the Suiyuan garrison city, with the General's Office located at its center. The Suiyuan General held the highest official rank, overseeing the Ulanqab and Ordos Mongol leagues, commanding the Eight Banners garrison, and wielding military and political power as the core institution controlling the northern frontier. Entering the main gate, the first gate is also a Ceremony Gate, sharing the same ritual regulations as the princess residence. It remains closed except when imperial edicts are read or high officials are received. Along the central axis, the main hall is where the general held court and military-political ceremonies, solemn and dignified. The second hall behind, called Tuisi Hall, was the general's office for reviewing memorials and meeting officers to discuss military affairs. Further back, the third and fourth halls served as the living quarters for the general and his family. From the Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China, 79 generals served here, including notable modern figures like Fu Zuoyi and Dong Qiwu. This place witnessed not only the Qing Eight Banners' frontier defense history but also the significant moments of the peaceful Suiyuan uprising in modern times. One princess residence fostered ethnic friendship through marriage alliance; one general's office guarded the northern frontier with military and political power. The tour guide told the story of Mengniu's rise from a small factory on the grassland to the international stage. I stood in the company's exhibition hall, looking at the familiar packaging of the bottles, and suddenly I felt a respect for the flavors that I am accustomed to in my daily life.
