The National Day holiday is finally here! The sweet "Swiss rolls" on the Hohhot grasslands have appeared 🥹1️ ⛺ [Must-visit spots]: 🏕 Sharing two "Swiss roll" photo spots 🛬 [Travel guide]: 1. Hadamen National Forest Park: The grass has turned completely yellow. The "Swiss rolls" are mainly distributed in two areas: Aobao Mountain and the Misty Forest. 💡 It is recommended to take the scenic shuttle bus. If you want to see the layered autumn colors, take the bus to the birch forest at the deepest point—it's stunning! 🚗 You will need to drive there; the drive takes 40–60 minutes. 2. Chilechuan Grassland: The grass is currently a mix of green and yellow, and it is expected to be completely yellow by the National Day holiday. The "Swiss rolls" are mainly distributed on the west side of "Aobao Meeting." There are many of them, and they look great against the backdrop of blue skies and white clouds. 💡 There is also a ten-mile flower embankment nearby with blooming cosmos flowers—it's super beautiful! 🚗 You can take bus 92 or 103 to Chilechuan Grassland. Get off at the Chilechuan Grassland International Convention and Exhibition Center station on bus 103, which is closer to the "Swiss rolls." 🏕️ You need plenty of energy for your holiday trip. That means 👉 sleeping well + eating well 🏨 [Accommodation guide]: I highly recommend staying in downtown Hohhot. Elong Hotel (General's Yamen Art Academy Branch) ✔ The bedding and pillows are soft, like sinking into a cloud. ✔ The bathroom is clean, and the hot water comes out quickly, washing away all your fatigue. ✔ A hearty breakfast is available on-site. Have something warm before you head out—shumai, lamb offal soup, milk tea... it's all there to warm your stomach and wake you up. ✔ Once you've eaten, you're ready to go. Staying in the city center near the subway makes it easy to get anywhere. 🧡 [Tips]: There is a large temperature difference between day and night, so be sure to bring long sleeves and pants. A hat and scarf are also essential.

With its stacked grey bricks and intricately carved beams, the General's Yamen in Hohhot stands quietly in the heart of the bustling city. Built in the second year of the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty to stabilize the northwestern frontier, Suiyuan City rose from the ground, and 79 generals guarded this post for nearly two centuries, forging the illustrious reputation of the "First Mansion of Monan." The Yamen was constructed to the specifications of a first-rank frontier official, featuring five courtyards progressing along a central axis and 132 symmetrical rooms. With its front halls and rear living quarters, it perfectly embodies the official ceremonial system of the Qing Dynasty. Visiting in mid-September, soft autumn light filters through the gnarled branches of ancient elm trees. The "Memories of Suiyuan" exhibition series is quietly on display, with over 200 artifacts connecting the vast, rugged years of the "Zou Xikou" migration to the turbulent history of the 919 peaceful liberation. If you visit during the Mid-Autumn Festival, you can experience the "Yamen Mansion · Courtyard Moon Gazing" immersive night tour, where you can walk through the six courtyards with a lantern, as if stepping back into the moonlight of a frontier post from 300 years ago.

"One old street, half the history of Hohhot" 🏮 Our first stop in Hohhot was the Sai Shang Old Street! This ancient street, over 400 years old, connects to the Dazhao Temple and encapsulates all the memories of old Guihua. 📸 Citywalk The old street wasn't crowded during the day, but it was very sunny; the sunlight shone on the gray bricks and tiles, creating excellent lighting, perfect for taking ethnic-style photos. After 6 pm, as the sun set, the gray walls against the blue sky created a stunning scene! 🍖 Food Guide There are many Inner Mongolian specialty snacks… ✔️Dairy products: We tried the cheese milk tofu pie, highly recommended, it was incredibly delicious! 8 yuan/piece ‼️Grilled skewers, 15 yuan/large skewer, choose carefully! The skewers we chose were particularly bad, dry and hard, and the meat wasn't fresh! ‼️Lamb trotters, 25 yuan/2 pieces, not as good as the ones we had in Ningxia, a bit gamey. ✔️Hot and sour noodles, 15 yuan/bowl, not bad. ‼️Stinky tofu, 15 yuan/large portion, not good! ✔️Grilled ice cream, not bad. 🚶‍♀️Route suggestions If you visit Dazhao Temple first, enter from the East Gate; If you come in the afternoon, I suggest entering from the West Gate to avoid being directly in the sun – it's really hot! 🌟History The unique cultural charm of this "Blue City" can be said to be concentrated in the Old Street of the Frontier and the nearby Dazhao and Ramoche Temples. Hohhot is a very magical city. It was able to transform from a purely nomadic land into a settled city where people from all walks of life willingly "stayed," a choice made by history and also due to the wonderful fusion of cultures. 1️⃣Pre-Qin to Qin and Han Dynasties: During the Warring States period, King Wuling of Zhao established Yunzhong Commandery and promoted "Hu-style clothing and cavalry archery" to facilitate the integration of agriculture and animal husbandry. 2️⃣ From the Wei, Jin, Song, and Yuan dynasties: The Xianbei Tuoba tribe built "Shengle City" here, laying the foundation for their later conquest of the Central Plains. 3️⃣ During the Liao, Jin, and Yuan dynasties, this area was called "Fengzhou," becoming a bustling transportation hub frequented by merchants. The existing Liao Dynasty "Wanbu Huayan Sutra Pagoda" is a testament to its prosperity at that time. 4️⃣ The "Twin Cities" of the Ming and Qing dynasties: In 1572, the Mongol leader Altan Khan (Altan Khan) and his wife, San Niangzi, oversaw the construction of Guihua City (present-day Old City), with walls built of blue bricks, hence the name "Qingcheng" (Blue City). 5️⃣ During the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty, to strengthen border defenses, a new garrison city, Suiyuan City (present-day New City), was built nearby, forming a dual-city structure where Guihua managed trade and Suiyuan managed military and political affairs. 6️⃣ In modern times, the two cities merged into "Gui-Sui". 7️⃣ In 1954, the original Mongolian name "Hohhot" was restored. Today, the blue bricks of the old streets and the red walls of the General's Mansion silently tell the story of the unique cultural changes that have taken place here.

When traveling to Hohhot and wanting to experience a unique avant-garde art atmosphere, plan a visit to Xibei contemporary art museum. This space was transformed from an old cold storage facility, featuring a highly recognizable container-style exterior, perfect for travelers who enjoy capturing their journey through photos at a leisurely pace. Navigation: Xibei contemporary art museum (Helingeer New District) 📌 Entry tip: It’s recommended to enter through the south gate. The park offers free parking, making it convenient for self-driving visitors. ⏰ Regular opening hours: Friday to Sunday, 9:00 AM–6:00 PM 🎫 Basic admission tickets are required. Senior visitors can enjoy discounts according to the relevant policies. Recommended photo spots 1. Suspended tree installation A distinctive exhibit inside the venue, paired with a mirrored floor design that creates a soft interplay of reality and reflection, ideal for calm, artistic photos. 2. Hanging tape measure art installation Rows of vintage tape measures hanging down create a unique visual effect. Capturing candid shots while walking here adds a storytelling vibe. 3. Star map stone river area Stones are arranged according to a star map pattern. Strolling through this area is perfect for taking serene, soothing photos. 4. Outdoor colorful container exterior walls The striking red main building facade is great for outdoor street-style travel photos. 5. Second-floor viewing platform From here, you can overlook the entire museum park, making it ideal for panoramic landscape shots. Outfit and practical tips Choose simple color tones like black, white, and gray for your outfit to better match the museum’s industrial minimalist style. After touring the exhibits, you can also enjoy local specialty foods nearby, combining art viewing, photography, and tasting local flavors for a fulfilling and relaxed short trip. Whether you’re on a date, family outing, or solo trip to see the exhibits, this is a cultural destination in Hohhot worth stopping by.

Highly recommend visiting the must-see cultural landmark in Hohhot, the General’s Mansion Museum. Known as the “No. 1 mansion in southern Inner Mongolia,” it offers a one-stop experience to understand nearly 300 years of Qingcheng’s history through the story of one general’s mansion. Admission is free and no reservation is needed; just show your ID to enter. The museum has 11 exhibition halls, including 5 core themed displays, with over 110,000 artifacts, among which 96 are precious cultural relics. 1. Historical background 1. Suiyuan city: In the 13th year of Emperor Yongzheng’s reign (1735), to prevent the Zunghar from invading the border again and to manage the Mongolian tribes in Guihua city nearby, the Qing dynasty chose a site five li northeast of Guihua city to build a garrison camp for the right guard of the Eight Banners. Construction of the new city began in the second year of Emperor Qianlong’s reign, who personally named it “Suiyuan city.” Because the north gate, east gate, main street, and drum tower are not aligned, there is a folk saying about “four gates not matching, drum tower not straight.” 2. Suiyuan general: The highest official in Inner Mongolia during the Qianlong period, directly appointed by the emperor with the rank of first-class official. The general oversaw local defense, governance, and public order. Starting from the second year of Qianlong’s reign, when General Wang Chang, previously stationed in Shanxi’s right guard, was ordered to move to Suiyuan city, until the last general Kunxiu in the second year of Xuantong, there were 79 generals in total. The jurisdiction included the Khalkha Mongols, extending south to Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces, governing all of southern Inner Mongolia. 3. General’s mansion: The highest-ranking military and political office in southern Inner Mongolia during the Qing dynasty, known as the “No. 1 mansion in southern Inner Mongolia.” It always served as the exclusive residence and office of the Suiyuan general. In modern times, Fu Zuoyi and Dong Qiwu successively served as chairmen of the Suiyuan provincial government here, leading classic battles such as the Bailing Temple victory and the Honggertu campaign during the Suiyuan resistance. In 1949, they promoted the peaceful liberation of Suiyuan, sparing Qingcheng from war. The entire mansion connects a century of history from Qing border defense, Republican reforms, wartime resistance, to peaceful liberation, truly embodying “one mansion, half the history of Qingcheng.” [Featured highlights] 1️⃣ Qing dynasty city defense cannon + west side arrow pavilion (military core relics): Upon entering, see the Qing dynasty city defense cannon, showcasing the heavy military presence guarding Suiyuan city. The west arrow pavilion was a military building supporting the Eight Banners garrison. 2️⃣ White marble imperial decree merit stele (museum treasure): Created during the Tongzhi period to honor General Delek Duorji’s border defense merits. The stele is inscribed in Manchu, Chinese, and Mongolian. 3️⃣ Fu Zuoyi’s tree planting stele (hidden gem): During his administration of Suiyuan, Fu Zuoyi personally planted a tree and erected a stele, which has survived for over a century. The inscription is now nearly faded. 2. Architectural style The general’s mansion was built strictly according to the “Great Qing Code” and the Qing Ministry of Works engineering regulations for first-class stationed generals. It features a first-class exclusive layout with three courtyards and five gates, following the ritual arrangement of “government affairs in front, residence in back,” with clear functional zoning. The stone lions on the screen wall at the entrance and the hierarchical ceremonial gates fully display the dignity of a high-ranking official. Core buildings inside include the main hall, second hall, third hall, seal room, official rooms, and Buddhist hall. The third and fourth halls were originally the general’s private quarters. The fourth hall was destroyed by fire in the 13th year of the Republic (1924) and rebuilt the same year. Now only the third hall remains; the fourth hall has been demolished. The architecture is well adapted to Hohhot’s harsh northern climate with severe cold, strong winds, sandstorms, and large temperature differences. It faces due south and north, with thick walls and gently sloped roofs for wind and cold protection, emphasizing practicality. The Fu Zuoyi office building inside the park, rebuilt after the 1924 fire, is a blend of Chinese and Western styles, featuring a Western-style columned viewing balcony at the back that is both decorative and served as a wartime lookout. It also includes a concrete underground air-raid shelter with a square-shaped concealed passage connecting to the main building, used for wartime command, secret communication, and emergency refuge during the Suiyuan resistance. [Featured architectural highlights] 1️⃣ Qianlong imperial calligraphy plaque “Ze Fu Xia Yi”: Hanging above the main hall, this plaque written by Emperor Qianlong symbolizes the emperor’s vast grace spreading across the land and borders, complementing the sea water qilin screen below. 2️⃣ Ancient couple trees: Two symmetrical elm trees planted on both sides of the rear hall in 1704, 33 years before the mansion was built. The elms symbolize “long-lasting blessings and firm border defense.” 3️⃣ Chengyuan two Yipavilions: Built in the 19th year of the Republic, these pavilions represent a garden design philosophy of combining natural beauty with cultural elegance, reflecting the Republican era’s idea of “taking from nature but surpassing nature.” 4️⃣ Fu Zuoyi’s former office + underground air-raid shelter: The simple and elegant Chinese-Western style office building features a distinctive Western balcony. The complete original underground air-raid shelter and passage authentically recreate the wartime command scene. 3. Recommended route It is recommended to follow a chronological order from ancient to modern times, starting from the main buildings to the gardens, from the museum’s special exhibitions to wartime sites, to fully understand the mansion’s century-long changes. When I first entered, I visited Fu Zuoyi’s former office, accidentally entered the air-raid shelter, and came out near the side hall, confused at first until I checked the map and found the main entrance again to continue along the central route. 1️⃣ Entrance service center: Watch the official introduction video to quickly build an overall understanding; 2️⃣ Main building complex along the central axis: Walk the central axis, visiting the main gate, ceremonial gate, main hall, second hall, and third hall in order, experiencing the ritual layout and ancient architectural style of a first-class official’s office; 3️⃣ Garden landscape area: Explore the covered corridors, Yuyi pavilion, and Guanjia pavilion, enjoying the elegant frontier garden scenery; 4️⃣ Themed exhibition area: Visit in the order of “Hohhot history → Westward migration culture → Suiyuan peaceful liberation,” appreciating tens of thousands of museum artifacts; 5️⃣ Republican era special area: Visit Fu Zuoyi’s former office, admire the distinctive Western balcony and Republican office furnishings, and learn about modern Suiyuan’s military and political history; 6️⃣ Grand finale experience: Follow the signs to the underground air-raid shelter command post for an immersive experience of the Suiyuan wartime atmosphere, unlocking an exclusive attraction experience. The museum offers rich content, and after visiting, you will surely feel the weight of history, making it a worthwhile trip. Friendly reminder: Recently, visitor numbers have been high. It is recommended to enter at 9:00 AM when the museum opens. The park has plenty of shade, making the visit comfortable. Many seniors enjoy touring here.

In the past, I was always the type who just couldn't sit still. Hijacked by the fast pace of daily life, my travels were equally rushed. I demanded efficiency in everything and chased results at every turn, even expecting scenic views to deliver some sort of "value." With a mind cluttered by distractions and a shallow, restless gaze, I could never truly experience the leisure of a journey. On this laid-back trip, however, I purposely steered clear of the bustling crowds and immersed myself in the rustic, tranquil vibe of the local neighborhoods. As the folks here often say, "Live comfortably, pass your days leisurely." They don't seek grand, earth-shattering moments; they just want a steady heart and a carefree spirit. The pace of life here is incredibly relaxed. There's no morning rush; the streets wake up gently. Vendors take their sweet time setting up, and neighbors chat at a leisurely pace, completely free from the urgency and anxiety of the city. In the afternoon, everyone is used to sitting quietly in the shade, brewing tea, and shooting the breeze. They don't chase excitement or take on extra chores, letting go of all unnecessary desires. I decided to go with the flow. I stopped obsessing over tourist checklists and stressing over itineraries. I simply found a shady spot to sit quietly, idly watching the clouds roll by and the scenery unfold peacefully, letting the outside noise fade away from my mind. The pent-up anxiety and chaotic thoughts from my past slowly settled and melted away in this peaceful, everyday atmosphere. My mind became crystal clear, completely untethered and free. It was then I realized that the most precious state in life is never about being constantly on the move, but rather guarding your inner peace and taking things one day at a time. Only in stillness can you filter out the noise; only in leisure can you cultivate composure. The most profound, harmonious joy is hidden in the simplicity of daily life. The saying, "In stillness, thoughts are clear; in leisure, the spirit is composed; in simplicity, joy is profound," perfectly captures this state of pure comfort, ease, and undisturbed clarity.

The Yungang Grottoes, originally named Lingyan Temple and Shifo Temple, are located 17 km west of Datong city in Shanxi Province, on the southern slope of Wuzhou Mountain. They are one of China’s most famous grotto groups. The carving of the Yungang Grottoes began during the Northern Wei period. In the third year of the Huangshi era (398), Emperor Daowu Tuoba Gui moved the capital from Shengle (now Helingeer County) to Pingcheng (now Datong city), making Wuzhou Mountain a key transportation hub between Shengle and Pingcheng. After Emperor Wencheng Tuoba Jun ascended the throne, he appointed the monk Tan Yao to lead the restoration project. With Emperor Wencheng’s support, Tan Yao chose the spiritually rich Wuzhou Mountain to “carve the mountain rock walls, open five caves, and sculpt one Buddha statue in each, the tallest 70 feet, the next 60 feet, with magnificent and extraordinary decorations, unmatched in the era.” Most of the Yungang caves were completed before Emperor Xiaowen Yuan Hong moved the capital to Luoyang, but the statues continued to be carved until the Zhengguang period (520–525). The carving of the Yungang Grottoes lasted about 150 years, spanning the Northern Wei, Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, and Tang dynasties. Today, there are 45 main caves, 252 niches of various sizes, and more than 59,000 stone sculptures, making it a treasure trove of Chinese grotto art. As a grotto authorized by the royal family, the Yungang Grottoes reflect the ambition of the Northern Wei dynasty. Compared with many other Chinese grotto temples, Yungang features the strongest Western influences, with a rich blend of Hu-style elements. It incorporates artistic elements from India and Central Asia, as well as architectural shapes, decorative patterns, and facial features from Greek and Roman cultures, reflecting its deep connections with major world civilizations.

On June 17th, visit two iconic Qing Dynasty ancient buildings in Qingcheng: the Residence of Princess Heshuo Kejing and the General's Office of Suiyuan City. One witnesses the marriage alliance between the Manchu and Mongol peoples and ethnic integration, while the other guards the northern frontier and oversees military and political affairs. The two are less than three kilometers apart, one soft and one hard, together forming a complete history of Qingcheng's Qing Dynasty frontier. First stop: Explanation of the Residence of Princess Heshuo Kejing The courtyard before you, with its red walls and black tiles, is the Residence of Princess Heshuo Kejing, known as the "First Residence West of the Capital," and is the best-preserved Qing Dynasty princess residence in the country. The residence was built in the 42nd year of Emperor Kangxi's reign and served as the palace for Princess Kejing, the emperor's sixth daughter. Please look at the main gate, where a bilingual plaque in Chinese and Mongolian hangs above. The eaves are painted with the standard royal palace patterns of the capital, and the stone lions in front of the gate are solemn and majestic. The entire courtyard was constructed according to royal palace regulations. At 19 years old, Princess Kejing was sent to marry into the Khalkha Mongols in northern Inner Mongolia. The Qing court specially chose this location to build the residence as her home and administrative center. Entering the gate and passing through the first courtyard, the gate ahead is the Ceremony Gate. In Qing ritual protocol, the Ceremony Gate was the gate of etiquette, usually kept closed, only opened when princes or envoys visited. Civil and military attendants could only pass through side doors, strictly observing social hierarchy. The princess residence faces south with the Daqing Mountain at its back, featuring a typical four-courtyard layout along a central axis. The architecture combines Central Plains construction techniques with northern grassland characteristics, exemplifying the cultural integration of Manchu, Han, and Mongol peoples. Passing through the Ceremony Gate, the main hall before you is Jingyi Hall, the political hall of the residence. Many visitors mistakenly think this was the princess's bedroom, but it was actually where Princess Kejing handled state affairs. She was not merely a princess sent for marriage alliance; during the Yongzheng era, she was promoted to Gurun Princess, wielding significant political power granted by the court. The grassland people respectfully called her the "Haibang Princess," meaning a princess who could participate in political discussions. She received Mongol princes here, mediated tribal disputes, led people in farming and trade between Mongols and Han, greatly easing ethnic tensions and stabilizing the northern grasslands. The entire residence follows a "front court for official affairs, rear court for living quarters" layout. Jingyi Hall is the administrative area, while the rear courtyard is the living quarters for the princess and her attendants. If the princess residence was the Qing court's affectionate bond with the grasslands, then the General's Office we will visit next was the military and political shield guarding the northern frontier. Second stop: General's Office of Suiyuan City We have now arrived at the General's Office of Suiyuan City, known as the "First Residence South of the Desert." There is a folk saying: "One general's residence is half the history of Qingcheng." This office was built in the second year of Emperor Qianlong's reign, more than seventy years after the princess residence. It was the office and residence of the Qing Dynasty General of Suiyuan City and the highest military and political center in the southern Mongolian desert region at the time. First, notice the blue brick screen wall at the south end, inscribed with the four characters "Ping Fan Shuo Mo," meaning "Shielding the northern desert," highlighting the office's mission to guard the frontier. To strengthen border defense, the Qing government dispatched Eight Banners troops from Shanxi to build the Suiyuan garrison city, with the General's Office located at its center. The Suiyuan General held the highest official rank, overseeing the Ulanqab and Ordos Mongol leagues, commanding the Eight Banners garrison, and wielding military and political power as the core institution controlling the northern frontier. Entering the main gate, the first gate is also a Ceremony Gate, sharing the same ritual regulations as the princess residence. It remains closed except when imperial edicts are read or high officials are received. Along the central axis, the main hall is where the general held court and military-political ceremonies, solemn and dignified. The second hall behind, called Tuisi Hall, was the general's office for reviewing memorials and meeting officers to discuss military affairs. Further back, the third and fourth halls served as the living quarters for the general and his family. From the Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China, 79 generals served here, including notable modern figures like Fu Zuoyi and Dong Qiwu. This place witnessed not only the Qing Eight Banners' frontier defense history but also the significant moments of the peaceful Suiyuan uprising in modern times. One princess residence fostered ethnic friendship through marriage alliance; one general's office guarded the northern frontier with military and political power. These two ancient buildings, one civil and one military, together witness over 300 years of Hohhot's development. Our explanations for these two sites conclude here.
