Jiangxi Travel Guide The landscapes and culture of Jiangxi unfold like a slowly unrolling ink scroll. The misty Lushan Mountain in northern Jiangxi reveals strange peaks and rocks, making it an excellent summer retreat. Walking up the bluestone steps, you can feel the cool mountain breeze on your face and appreciate the stone-carved poems left by literati of past dynasties. Heading south to Jingdezhen, the craftsmanship of the thousand-year-old porcelain capital continues. Next to the ancient kiln ruins, artisans still hand-throw clay on the wheel, shaping the clay with their fingertips and painting blue-and-white patterns, passing on the unending flame and art. When migratory birds flock by Poyang Lake, they darken the sky; in autumn, the reed flowers look like snow, and in winter, swans dance gracefully. After a rain clears, at the distinct meeting point of waters beneath Shizhong Mountain, the mingling of clear and murky water is a natural wonder. In Wuyuan, the rapeseed flower fields and Hui-style architecture complement each other beautifully. In the morning light, smoke curls from cooking fires, and old stories of farming and scholarship are hidden beneath the horse-head walls. A bowl of spicy fresh tofu pudding and a plate of stir-fried bacon with amaranth are flavorful expressions of the local customs and culture.

Only at the end of autumn do you understand Nanjing's romance! From November to December, Jinling is dyed in a clash of red and yellow, with falling phoenix trees, golden ginkgo, and red maple leaves. This autumn trip is worth making a thousand times~ We've compiled tested photo spots that won't let you down, even beginners can shoot stunning photos!📸 📍 Must-visit autumn photo spots (with shooting tips) 1. Music Stage|Doves dancing with autumn sunshine When flocks of pigeons circle over golden phoenix trees, Nanjing’s autumn BGM instantly plays!🕊️ ✅ Shooting Tips: Be sure to go in the morning! Pigeons are hungry and easy to fly in the early morning; after lunch, they get lazy. Backlit shots of pigeons flying create a great atmosphere. 2. Meiling Palace|Jinling’s exclusive “gem necklace” Hidden in Zhongshan’s romance, aerial views show the phoenix tree avenue surrounding Meiling Palace, resembling a sapphire necklace studded with diamonds💎 ✅ Shooting Tips: The sunlight in the early morning or evening is perfect, giving the phoenix trees a warm golden glow. Paired with Republic of China architecture, every shot looks vintage. It’s more cost-effective to buy a combined ticket with the Music Stage. 3. Phoenix Tree Avenue|Golden tunnel paved with fallen leaves “A phrase for phoenix tree beauty, planted all over Nanjing city.” Morning autumn light shines on the phoenix leaves, and falling leaves drift in the wind, creating a full atmosphere🍂 ✅ Shooting Tips: Go early when it’s quiet. Wear light-colored clothes or Hanfu for photos. Walking through piles of fallen leaves feels like stepping into a Republic of China movie scene. 4. Liangzhou at Xuanwu Lake|Lake light and autumn colors in harmony The lake hides Nanjing’s gentleness, with trees on the shore dyed in autumn colors reflecting on the calm water. Every shot is poetic📸 ✅ Shooting Tips: If you have time, walk along the lake. When tired, take the sightseeing bus. At dusk, watch the sunset on the lake; the shimmering waves are very healing. 5. It's CNY 72 at the gate, almost double the price · You may get free admission if you can recite "Notes on Stone Bell Mountain," wear Hanfu, or were born in the Year of the Horse. Check if these policies are still active before you go · On your way back in the afternoon, stop by the Poyang Lake Hukou Viewing Platform (15-min walk, free) to see the magnificent view of Poyang Lake entering the Yangtze River. Also, pack a few short-sleeved shirts and shorts. 💼 Bring your ID card and student ID. Save digital copies of attraction tickets and high-speed train tickets in advance as a backup. 🧴 Don't forget sun protection. The midday sun in northern Jiangxi is strong, so pack sunscreen and a sun hat. 🥾 Bring a pair of lightweight sneakers. You'll need them for climbing Lushan and walking on ancient post roads. Comfortable walking is key to having a good time. 💊 Bring common stomach medicine and mosquito repellent. There are many insects in the mountains and forests of northern Jiangxi, and Gan cuisine can sometimes upset your stomach. 📸 Bring a portable power bank. You'll need it for taking photos of the ancient kilns and Wuyuan's autumn scenery. Don't miss any photo opportunities. · ------------------- Want to start a relaxing journey? 👇 Click the card below to plan your trip in advance.

🚌 Transportation guide Don't just pick any station when arriving in Jiujiang. Honestly, Jiujiang Station is closer to the city center, making it easier to take a taxi to Xunyang Tower, Yanshui Pavilion, and Pipa Pavilion. For Lushan, prioritize Lushan Station, then transfer to the dedicated line to the cable car lower station to avoid motion sickness. City buses can take you to the old town by the river. For going up the mountain, I recommend booking the Lushan cable car round-trip on Trip.com to avoid the winding mountain roads that can make you feel terrible 🚠. After parking at the cable car lower station, take a shuttle into Guling. Don't expect to walk to all the attractions on the mountain; just buy the sightseeing bus ticket. For Shizhong Mountain in Hukou, you can take a bus and then a taxi. If driving, navigating to the scenic area parking lot is the easiest way. For Poyang Lake, just enjoy the water views and grass sea; I don't recommend driving blindly on unpaved roads, as losing signal will be a nightmare. 📸 Photo spots Shoot reflections at Ruqin Lake in the morning; the lake is curved like a violin, and wearing a light-colored dress looks ethereal 🌸. For the sea of clouds and distant mountains at Hanpokou, it's less crowded on sunny mornings around 6 AM—don't forget your tripod. Shoot the cliff mist from the Jinxiu Valley boardwalk; don't force it on rainy days, as the fog can be too thick and just look like a blank white screen. Shoot the Yangtze River sunset by the Xunyang River; the red walls of Xunyang Tower paired with cargo ships have a vintage movie vibe 🏯. At Shizhong Mountain, shoot the clear-and-yellow boundary of the Yangtze River from the "Jiang Tian Yi Lan" Pavilion; the light is softest at 4 PM. You can get great shots of the two-colored waters without even entering the cave. 🎟️ Ticket booking The Lushan entrance ticket is about CNY 160 during peak season and is valid for 7 days. Students get half-price, and seniors/children can get free tickets with ID, but you still need to reserve the 0-yuan ticket—don't wait until you reach the gate to realize you haven't registered with your real name 🙃. Buying in advance via Trip.com or official real-name channels is the safest bet. The round-trip cable car is about CNY 118—120. Buy the mountain sightseeing bus ticket separately; the pass that includes trips up and down the mountain saves your legs. The separate ticket for Sandiequan is about CNY 63; for those who prefer convenience, add the CNY 80 round-trip cable car ticket. Xiufeng is CNY 56, Bailudong Academy is CNY 36, Shizhong Mountain is CNY 40, and Donglin Buddha is free. If you don't book in advance during holidays, you might be turned away at the gate, which is a real hassle. 🍜 Local food recommendations Jiujiang radish cakes are just a few dollars on the street; crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, they are best in the morning 🌶️ Stir-fried rice noodles have that perfect "wok hei" and are great with pickled long beans—pure carb happiness Stone fish with scrambled eggs and stone ear mushroom soup are classic Lushan flavors; check the menu before ordering at small restaurants in Guling Town Poyang Lake bighead carp stewed with tofu has a milky white broth and is amazing when paired with bean curd sticks that soak up the sauce 🐟 Xiushui Shaozi (glutinous skin stuffed with meat) is a great, non-greasy snack Buy tea cakes from reputable, established shops; avoid the cheap, loose-leaf tea in scenic areas—it's hard to tell the real from the fake, and you will regret it Always ask for the price before ordering fish at riverside restaurants; "market price" traps can be more frustrating than climbing a mountain 🥾 Detailed itinerary Day 1: Slow stroll in the city. See the ancient architecture in the middle of the lake at Yanshui Pavilion, walk to Xunyang Tower to catch the river breeze, then head to Pipa Pavilion for Tang-style photos. Wait for the sunset on the Yangtze River promenade in the evening. Day 2: Lushan West Line. Take the cable car up and stay in Guling. Ruqin Lake, Huajing, Jinxiu Valley, and Xianren Cave are all on one gentle route. Have a stir-fry dinner on Guling Street in the evening. Day 3: East Line challenge. See the morning view at Hanpokou, climb Wulao Peak if you have the energy, and hike down to see the waterfall at Sandiequan before taking the cable car back. There are many stairs, so walking the whole way without the cable car will be exhausting. If you have more time, Day 4: Visit Shizhong Mountain in Hukou to see the two-colored waters on your way back. If you want a peaceful experience, you can squeeze in Donglin Buddha on the afternoon of Day 2. ⚠️ Tips to avoid pitfalls It's cooler on the mountain than in the city in September, so bring a light jacket. Wear non-slip shoes for Sandiequan; wearing high heels will ruin your trip 👟. The cable car may stop operating in strong winds or heavy rain; check the daily operating status on Trip.com before you set off to buy tickets. Don't believe roadside guides who promise you can skip the line; the official sightseeing bus is the most reliable option. Don't miss the last sightseeing bus, or you will be cursing as you walk back to Guling after sunset. Only view Poyang Lake from a distance; do not feed or chase the animals, and do not enter protected areas. Buy local specialties from reputable shops; there are many low-price scams involving "rare stones" and "wild tea" by the river, and I really don't recommend bringing them home to take up space in your luggage.

Packing essentials🧥 In September, downtown Jiujiang often hits 28–29 degrees during the day, and you'll be sweating the moment you step into the sun😅. The mountain is a completely different story; it gets so chilly in the mornings and evenings that you'll regret only bringing short sleeves. Honestly, don't listen to the "it's still summer in September" nonsense. It's safest to pack a set of short sleeves, thin long pants, and a light windbreaker. Don't wear new leather shoes or sneakers with soles as hard as bricks. Lushan has many stairs, and one slip will have you regretting it all day👟. Disposable raincoats are more convenient than long umbrellas. Mountain showers come and go quickly, and umbrellas just block your view. Keep sunscreen, sunglasses, and a power bank in your side pockets. It's windy by the river, so use a chin strap for your hat, or it'll blow away before you can even take a photo🌞. Tips to avoid pitfalls⚠️ In Lushan, don't trust the "low-price guide" or "skip-the-line" offers on the street. You might save a few bucks, but you'll end up taking detours, paying extra fees, and waiting for rides, making you question your life choices🙃. Check the last departure times for sightseeing buses and cable cars in advance. Don't linger at San Diequan until evening, or you'll be stuck with no way down. Don't buy bundled tickets from unlicensed guides for attractions around the city like Shizhong Mountain or Xunyang Tower. It's better to buy what you need yourself. If you want to see the morning mist, stay near Guling on the mountain. Staying in the city is cheaper, but commuting up and down every day is a hassle. Plus, last-minute hotel bookings during peak season can be stressful💸. Ask for prices before eating fish by the river; "market price" traps are a real mood killer. If you're not in great shape, don't force yourself to walk all the stairs at San Diequan. The cable car saves a lot of effort, and you can visit flatter spots on the way back. Must-visit attractions🏞️ The Lushan entrance ticket is CNY 160 and includes multiple entries within 7 days. It's best to take your time strolling around Ruqin Lake, Flower Path, and Jinxiu Valley📸. The San Diequan ticket is CNY 63, and the round-trip cable car is CNY 80. If you're feeling lazy, just take the cable car—don't push yourself to hike it💦. The Xiufeng ticket is CNY 56, Bailudong Academy is CNY 36, and the Hanpokou cable car is CNY 50 round-trip. They're all worth it for the lake and mountain views. In the city, enjoy the Yangtze River breeze at Xunyang Tower, and take a walk around Pipa Pavilion and Yanshui Pavilion. You don't have to go inside every one; just walking by the river makes for great photos🌉. The Shizhong Mountain ticket is CNY 40, plus CNY 65 for the boat ride to see the two-colored waters. It's only when you're there that Su Shi's "Notes on Shizhong Mountain" really hits home. Donglin Temple and the Donglin Great Buddha are free. The golden Buddha and the temple are peaceful and very healing if you're not in a rush🙏. Check opening hours and ticket packages on Trip.com in advance; it's more reliable than buying blindly on-site. Transportation guide🚄 Taking the high-speed train to Jiujiang Station is the easiest. Buses and taxis are convenient for city attractions. To get to Lushan, you can take bus 57 to the cable car station for CNY 3—it's a good deal if you're not in a hurry🚌. From Lushan Station, there's a shuttle to the transfer center, then a bus to the cable car station for CNY 10. Don't squeeze onto public buses if you have luggage. The cable car is the best way up the mountain: CNY 120 round-trip for adults, CNY 75 one-way up, and CNY 65 one-way down. Buy sightseeing bus tickets through official channels; don't haggle with private drivers. Within the city, a minimum-fare taxi ride is enough to get to Xunyang River or Gantang Lake. If you're going to Shizhong Mountain in Hukou, plan your round-trip time carefully. Don't try to squeeze in Lushan on the same day, or your itinerary will fall apart🚕. Booking tickets and transfers on Trip.com is straightforward and saves you from being misled by "helpful" strangers at the station. Local food🍜 Jiujiang radish cakes are just a few yuan each—crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. They go perfectly with almond tea😋. For breakfast, grab a bowl of glutinous rice balls in sweet soup; it's sweet but not cloying. For stir-fried rice noodles, look for that "wok hei" flavor. The simpler the shop, the better. Lushan dried bamboo shoots with pork and scrambled eggs with cloud tea are light and go well with rice. Don't mix "stone chicken" (frog) with wild-caught items; stick to farmed options for safety🍲. Eat fish head with tofu around Poyang Lake, but ask for the final price before ordering. Old restaurants around Yanshui Pavilion and Dazhong Road are more reliable than the big tourist traps. For a late-night snack, grab some barbecue at a riverside stall; you can get full for just a few dozen yuan. For souvenirs, just buy tea cakes or fermented fish. Don't get distracted by the "specialty gift boxes" at attraction entrances. After booking your hotel on Trip.com, search for local restaurants on the map. It's cheaper and better than blindly following influencer lists🥢.

Jiujiang is stunning, perfect for a September–October trip. You'll be glad you went. Bottom line: September–October is the golden window for Jiujiang, when the summer heat fades, the Lushan sea of clouds rises, the Poyang Lake sunset is at its softest, and autumn arrives at Xunyang River. The average temperature in the city is 20–28°C, while in Guling Town on Mount Lushan, it's 18–24°C during the day and 12–15°C in the morning and evening. This is when the probability of seeing the Lushan sea of clouds is at its highest for the year, the autumn water at Sandiequan Waterfall is crystal clear, you can listen to the waves at Shizhong Mountain by Poyang Lake, and the night lights at Xunyang Tower feel warm. It's a fantastic, all-in-one destination featuring "famous mountains, great lakes, and historic poetic cities." 🎫 Attraction ticket reference (2026 estimated prices) · Lushan Scenic Area: General admission approx. CNY 160, sightseeing bus CNY 90 (valid for 7 days); Sandiequan Waterfall is an additional CNY 64 (approx. CNY 80 including round-trip cable car) · Hanpokou/Wulaofeng/Jinxiu Valley/Ruqin Lake: Included in general admission; these are the best spots for the sea of clouds · Xunyang Tower: Approx. CNY 20; climb the tower to view the Yangtze River and see where Song Jiang from "Water Margin" wrote his rebellious poem · Yanshui Pavilion: Approx. CNY 15; site of Zhou Yu's command platform, located on an island in Gantang Lake · Shizhong Mountain (Hukou): Approx. CNY 40; the confluence of Poyang Lake and the Yangtze River, the actual site described in Su Shi's "Record of Stone Bell Mountain" · Donglin Temple/Xilin Temple: Free to CNY 10; ancestral temple of the Pure Land sect, located at the foot of Mount Lushan · Bailudong Academy (southeast of Lushan): Approx. CNY 30; where Zhu Xi taught, rich in autumn atmosphere · Poyang Lake National Wetland Park (Duchang/Wucheng): Approx. CNY 60–80; migratory birds return in October, and the reeds turn golden · Xiufeng (southern foot of Lushan): Approx. CNY 45; the suspected location that inspired Li Bai's poem "Flying down three thousand feet" 🗺️ Recommended itineraries · Classic 3-day, 2-night trip (Lushan + historic city): Day 1: Arrive in Jiujiang > Xunyang Tower > Yanshui Pavilion > Yuliang South Road Old Street > Jiujiang Yangtze River night view (stay in Xunyang District); Day 2: Mount Lushan (transfer to sightseeing bus at North Gate) > Ruqin Lake > Huajing > Jinxiu Valley > Xianren Cave > Hanpokou for the sea of clouds (stay in Guling Town); Day 3: Sandiequan Waterfall > Wulaofeng (hike to the top if you have the energy) > Descend the mountain > Donglin Temple > Depart (add Shizhong Mountain/Poyang Lake if time permits) · 4-day trip including Poyang Lake: Day 1: Jiujiang historic city; Day 2: Full day at Mount Lushan (stay in Guling); Day 3: Sandiequan Waterfall + Wulaofeng; Day 4: Shizhong Mountain + Poyang Lake Wetland > Depart · Half-day city tour: Jiujiang Museum > Xunyang Tower > Yanshui Pavilion > Yuliang South Road > Yangtze River Bund 🏨 Accommodation tips · Xunyang District (Jiujiang Station/Yangtze River side): Chain hotels CNY 150–260 (All Seasons, Atour, Vienna); close to Xunyang Tower/Yanshui Pavilion/high-speed railway station, convenient for dining and transport, the best choice for first-time visitors · Guling Town (on Mount Lushan): A must-stay if you want to photograph the sea of clouds and sunrise; guesthouses CNY 200–500; book 7–10 days in advance for the National Day holiday; it's cold at night, so bring a light down jacket · Southern foot of Lushan (Xiufeng/Bailudong): Stay in Xingzi/Wenquan Town if you want to photograph waterfalls + academies; CNY 100–200 · Hukou (Shizhong Mountain): County chain hotels CNY 100–180; stay here if adding the Poyang Lake route · Wucheng (Poyang Lake Wetland): Guesthouses are in high demand during the migratory bird season (after November); rooms are easier to find in September–October 🍜 What to eat (no-fail recommendations) · Jiujiang radish cake: The soul of breakfast; shredded radish + flour, fried until crispy, served with soy milk; CNY 5–8 at old street stalls · Xunyang fish fillets/Poyang Lake fish head soup: Representative of northern Jiangxi river delicacies; fish head stewed with tofu creates a milky white soup; average cost CNY 60–90 per person at old restaurants around Xunyang Tower · Jiujiang stir-fried rice noodles: Full of "wok hei" (breath of the wok), served with shredded pork and bean sprouts; CNY 6–10 per bowl · Lushan stone chicken/stone fish with scrambled eggs: Lushan specialties; stone chicken is not a frog (it's a spinous frog) and has tender meat; stone fish are tiny but fresh; commonly found in Guling Town restaurants · Tea cakes/crispy candy: Jiujiang intangible cultural heritage snacks; sweet and fragrant, perfect with tea, the top choice for souvenirs · Snacks: Xiushui Shaozi, Hukou pickled fish, Ruichang yam, Wuning stick fish · Night markets: Yuliang South Road, Dazhong Road, area around Jiujiang University · Souvenirs: Lushan Cloud Mist Tea, Jiujiang tea cakes, crispy candy, dried Poyang Lake silver fish, Hukou fermented soybeans · Tips to avoid traps: Ignore the "CNY 10 to take you through the back door" offers on the main street of Xunyang Tower; keep an eye on the weight when ordering fish head soup; vegetables on Mount Lushan are expensive and scarce, so don't expect a feast ⚠️ Important reminders · Lushan sea of clouds: The highest probability is at Hanpokou/Wulaofeng on clear mornings after rain; staying in Guling is 10 times more reliable than commuting from the foot of the mountain; September–October offers the best photo opportunities with the sea of clouds and autumn forest together. · Sandiequan Waterfall intensity: The descending stairs are extremely steep (about 3,000 steps); if you have bad knees, choose the cable car for both ways; the valley floor is slippery, so wear non-slip shoes; the climb back up is even more tiring. · Autumn temperature difference: 28°C in the city (short sleeves), below 12°C in Guling in the morning and evening (light jacket + fleece); it's windy at Hanpokou, so bring a windbreaker; UV rays are still strong, so bring SPF 50+ sunscreen and sunglasses. · Transportation pain points: Attractions are spread across different areas (City ↔ Lushan North Gate 1h, ↔ Xiufeng 1.5h, ↔ Hukou Shizhong Mountain 1.5h, ↔ Poyang Lake Wucheng 2h); driving yourself or hiring a car (approx. CNY 300–400/day) is the most reliable option; you will need to transfer after arriving at Jiujiang Station by high-speed rail. · Lushan sightseeing bus: The 7-day pass for CNY 90 is a must-buy; attractions on the mountain are scattered and rely on this bus to connect them; don't try to walk between them. · Poyang Lake water level: The water is still murky after the flood season in September; the water recedes and reeds turn yellow in October; migratory birds arrive in large numbers in Wucheng from late October to November; visiting in September to early October is mainly for the lake scenery and autumn colors. 📅 Condensed itinerary (3 days, 2 nights) Day 1: Jiujiang > Xunyang Tower > Yanshui Pavilion > Yuliang South Road night market (stay in Xunyang) Day 2: Mount Lushan (Ruqin Lake > Jinxiu Valley > Hanpokou sea of clouds) (stay in Guling) Day 3: Sandiequan Waterfall > Wulaofeng > Donglin Temple > Depart (add Shizhong Mountain if time permits) Standing at Hanpokou in September–October, the sea of clouds swallows Poyang Lake and Wulaofeng into an ink wash painting, and the night lights of Xunyang Tower dye the Yangtze River golden red. With a bowl of fish head soup and Lushan Cloud Mist Tea in hand—at that moment, you'll understand why autumn in Jiujiang is the most rewarding limited-time experience, featuring "Lushan sea of clouds + Xunyang poetry + Poyang Lake sunset." Go off-peak (late September/after October 8), and it's truly worth it.
