Stayed at a forest villa in Hunchun, and it was so cool
Help! It’s only 22°C in Hunchun in July?! I originally thought summer in Northeast China would be cool, but I didn’t expect it to be this cool! At night, you even need a blanket to sleep. This isn’t summer vacation, it’s like early autumn already!
🌲 First, the most stunning thing: 22°C summer
No exaggeration, I came from the southern sauna heat of 35°C, and as soon as I got off the plane, I was chilled—the wind is cool, the air is fresh, and even under the sun, it doesn’t feel stuffy. Who understands this kind of comfort!
Because Hunchun is close to both the sea and mountains, summers are especially cool, with an average temperature of 20-26°C. Plus, it’s dry coolness, not that damp cold, so it feels especially comfortable.
🏔️ Day 1: Fangchuan Borderline
This has to be first! Coming to Hunchun and not visiting Fangchuan is a wasted trip!
Standing on Longhu Pavilion, the breathtaking view of three countries at once is beyond words: Russia on the left, North Korea on the right, China beneath your feet, and the Tumen River winding into the sea. On clear days, you can even see the Sea of Japan.
👉 Fangchuan sightseeing order:
1. Take the sightseeing bus to Longhu Pavilion, climb to the top for a panoramic view of the three countries
2. Walk down the boardwalk to Tuzipai to feel the history
3. Visit the “First Village of the East” and take photos of Korean ethnic customs
4. Sand Dune Park is great for playing in the sand, kids love it
⏰ Time arrangement:
· Recommended to go in the morning when there are fewer people and the light is good
· The whole trip takes about 3-4 hours
· Don’t rush, take your time to stroll and enjoy
🌳 Day 2: Dahuangou Deep Oxygen Absorption
This place is truly a hidden gem! Few people, beautiful scenery, and free entry. The original forest coverage is very high, and walking inside feels like entering a natural air-conditioned room.
Follow the stream upstream, surrounded by ancient trees and waterfalls. The air is full of negative oxygen ions; a deep breath feels like your lungs are being cleansed.
🥾 Recommended hiking routes:
· Beginner: Walk the main trail, about 1 hour round trip, easy and not tiring
· Intermediate: Go deeper to see more waterfalls, 2-3 hours round trip
· Adventure: Find a local guide to take you on wild paths for a full experience
⚠️ Notes:
· Wear non-slip shoes; moss on stones is very slippery
· Bring enough water and snacks; there’s little to buy inside
· Don’t take wild paths; it’s easy to get lost, safety first
· Spray plenty of mosquito repellent; mosquitoes in the forest are very fierce
⛺ Camping lovers rejoice
There is a dedicated campsite inside Dahuangou where you can bring your own gear or rent. Camping in the forest in summer, stargazing at night, waking up to birdsong in the morning—this experience is truly amazing.
I stayed one night; lying in the tent listening to insects and stream sounds made me feel completely wrapped in nature, very healing.
🌊 Day 3: A stroll around Jingxin Wetland
In summer, Jingxin Wetland is lush green and very soothing. Walking along the boardwalk, you can see various water birds. Bird photography enthusiasts must come here.
The wetland is very windy, which feels very comfortable and not hot at all. A slow afternoon stroll here is very pleasant.
🦢 Birdwatching tips:
· Summer is breeding season, so you can see many water birds with their babies
· Bring binoculars for a closer look
· Don’t get too close or disturb the birds
· Birds are most active in early morning and late afternoon
🚗 Other places to visit around Hunchun:
· Tumen Port: 1 hour drive from Hunchun, see the national gate and boundary markers
· Fangchuan Sand Dune Park: A unique place where desert and forest coexist
· Lotus Lake: Beautiful lotus blossoms in summer
· Quanhe Port: China-North Korea border port, see North Korea across the river
