Inuyama travel guide and discussion

When planning a trip to Nagoya, most people think of Nagoya Castle and Hitsumabushi (grilled eel over rice). However, I’ve recently fallen in love with Aichi’s coastal areas and highly recommend exploring them. ⠀⠀ Himakajima, for instance, offers a charming fishing village vibe. Known as "Octopus Island" for its local specialty, it’s the perfect getaway for cycling by the sea in summer or indulging in fresh seafood in winter. ⠀⠀ If you’ve already visited Nagoya several times, consider exploring further out. Here’s a guide to Aichi’s urban and suburban gems. Recommended Duration ・Nagoya City Only: 1–2 days ・Nagoya + Inuyama or Ghibli Park: 2–3 days ・Nagoya + Mikawa Bay Onsens or Chita Peninsula: 3–4 days for a more relaxed pace Nagoya City: Family Favorites Nagoya City Science Museum & Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Garden: A popular duo for a family day trip. The Port of Nagoya area is also a must-visit. Nagakute & Toyota: Ghibli Park and Tech History Ghibli Park: Step into the magical world of Hayao Miyazaki’s animations. The Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology is the birthplace of the Toyota Group. Built on the site of a former textile mill, it showcases Toyota's evolution from textiles to automotive giant. The museum features two main sections—the Textile Machinery Pavilion and the Automobile Pavilion—highlighting the technology that powered Japan’s modernization. It perfectly captures Toyota’s spirit of "Research and Creativity" and the art of manufacturing, making it a hit for car enthusiasts and families alike. Inuyama & Northern Owari Inuyama Castle & Castle Town: National Treasure and Nostalgic Streets Inuyama Castle is one of Japan’s oldest surviving castle towers. Perched majestically on a hill, it is nicknamed "Hakutei-jo" (White Emperor Castle). Built in 1537, it is listed as one of Japan’s Top 100 Castles and is a designated National Treasure, alongside icons like Himeji and Matsumoto. The watchtower-style architecture features three stories on the outside and four stories plus two basement levels inside. Beyond the castle itself, the surrounding castle town beautifully preserves the atmosphere of the Edo period.

Chose to book the 1-day tour to Inuyama Castle, Inari Shrine, Ena Gorge, Magome, and Tsumago-juku on Trip.com's recommendation—and it turned out to be a fantastic decision. From the start, we had the good fortune of being guided by XiaoYu, whose attentiveness, patience, and helpfulness made the journey truly wonderful. She ensured everyone felt cared for and never hesitated to answer our questions, making each stop both smooth and enjoyable. If you're considering a day trip around Nagoya, this tour is not only well-planned but also offers insight into Japan's history and natural beauty—all made even better with a guide like XiaoYu. Highly recommended for those looking for a comfortable, informative, and memorable experience! #realreview

I explored quite a bit during my trip to Nagoya and managed to pack a lot in. Based on my itinerary, I’ve put together a list of the best places to visit. Check this out before you start planning! :) 📌 Mirai Tower & Oasis 21: Iconic landmarks in the heart of Sakae. The highlight is the stunning night view of Mirai Tower from the Oasis 21 rooftop. 📌 Osu Shopping District & Osu Kannon: A massive arcade centered around Osu Kannon Temple. It’s packed with local street food and vintage shops, making it a great place to explore. 📌 Inuyama Castle & Castle Town (Nearby Trip): A top-tier destination near Nagoya. You'll love the Edo-period vibes of the castle town and the breathtaking views from the castle tower. It’s only a 30-minute train ride from Nagoya Station, making it a perfect day trip. 📌 Nagoya Castle: One of Japan’s top three castles. While the main tower (keep) is currently closed for renovation, the surrounding park is a beautiful place to relax and unwind.

Growing up in an average family in Malaysia, traveling to Japan always felt like a faraway dream—the kind of trip that would easily cost a few months’ salary even after you start working in Singapore. For years, I saved and planned, driven by one single dream: to show my mother the world. Last January, my partner and I finally made it happen. We packed our bags, took my mom, and set off for the historic town of Inuyama. It wasn’t snowing, but the biting winter air made us bundle up close. Though it was too early for the cherry blossoms she loves, seeing her face light up at every new sight made me feel more fulfilled than words can say. ✨ My Personal Afterthoughts: What I love most about Inuyama is that it is completely different from the mainstream, copy-paste tourist spots flooding everyone’s Instagram and social feeds. Walking through this town didn't feel like a curated vacation; it felt like a genuine, quiet adventure. It’s raw, authentic, and completely peaceful. 🚇 The Long Journey: From Singapore to Inuyama (Via Google Maps!) If you are planning this trip, don’t panic about the long transit—even as a first-timer, Google Maps makes the entire Japanese rail system incredibly foolproof! The Flight: We took a Scoot red-eye flight from Singapore (SIN) to Osaka (KIX). The Shinkansen: From Osaka, we boarded the Shinkansen bullet train to Nagoya Station (approx. 50 minutes). The Local Line: At Nagoya, we transferred to the Meitetsu Inuyama Line. We took the Rapid Express train directly to Inuyamayuen Station (犬山遊園駅), which took about 30–35 minutes. The Walk: Hotel Indigo Inuyama Urakuen Garden is a scenic, flat 8-minute walk (~800 meters) along the tranquil Kiso River from Inuyamayuen Station. 🏛️ First Impressions: Local Culture Meets Cozy Comfort The moment we stepped into the lobby, the distinct, artsy design of Hotel Indigo blew us away. It is beautifully infused with Inuyama’s rich history, featuring calming wooden accents and warm lighting. I loved that the lobby featured a boutique corner selling local goods, like fresh regional honey and hand-woven baskets! Our room was spacious and incredibly comfortable, but the absolute highlight was looking out our window at the tranquil water landscape. 🌌 A Real-Life Anime Scene: At night, the hotel lights up mini fire torches across the outdoor water feature. Sitting by the glass and watching the flames flicker against the dark water felt exactly like a mystical warding ritual to keep demons away, straight out of an anime! ♨️ The Ultimate Relaxer: My First Japanese Onsen The main reason I booked this hotel was for its famous Hakutei no Yu—the only natural hot spring in Inuyama. The Experience: After a grueling day of traveling, soaking in the open-air outdoor bath with the cold winter wind on my face and hot mineral water keeping me warm was pure heaven! Thoughtful Touches: The onsen changing room is stocked with premium amenities (hair serums, lotions, and towels), so you literally only need to bring yourself. Funny Family Memory: While I fell in love with the hot spring culture, my mother just couldn't accept the traditional etiquette of bathing naked with strangers, so she skipped it entirely! (More onsen time for me, haha!) Note: There is also a beautiful, eco-friendly wooden gym in-house if you like to keep up with your workouts! 🍵 Step Inside a UNESCO Heritage Site: Urakuen Garden The hotel is directly adjacent to the breathtaking Urakuen Garden (有楽苑). Guests get access to this quiet, moss-covered sanctuary, which houses the national treasure Jo-an Teahouse. We got to experience a traditional, highly meditative Japanese tea ceremony inside the garden. Don't worry about the language barrier—they provided detailed English instructions so we could follow along seamlessly! The ancient wooden architecture and winding stone pathways make this an incredibly beautiful and peaceful photo-taking spot (perfect for taking candid photos of my mom enjoying the peaceful landscape). 🏮 Walking the Historic Castle Town (Inuyama Jokamachi) From the hotel, you can walk down a quiet pathway lined with local residential houses, which makes you feel like you are genuinely living among the locals. Soon, this path opens up into Inuyama Jokamachi (犬山城下町), the beautifully preserved historic castle town street. The Food: The historic street is packed with traditional street food! I highly recommend trying the salt-baked fish roasted over open coals—it was unbelievably fresh, crispy, and savory. 🥜 The Local Gem (Nuts Store): While exploring, make sure to stop by Mamemichi (豆吉本舗 犬山店), a highly popular local specialty bean and nut store on the main street. They sell dozens of varieties of beautifully packaged, flavored peanuts, traditional broad beans, and sweet matcha/strawberry chocolate-coated nuts. They let you taste samples of virtually everything, making it the perfect, unique souvenir to bring back home! ⚠️ Crucial Dinner Warning: Be aware that this historic street completely shuts down and goes quiet after dark (most shops close by 5:00 PM). Do not count on finding dinner here late at night—it's best to look for food spots closer to the main Inuyama station or eat at the hotel’s beautiful restaurant! I do hope that everybody that wants to see the world is able to make their dream comes tomrue too! (Check out my separate Inuyama Castle post in my bio for the full sightseeing guide! 🏰) #JapanTravel #HotelIndigoInuyama #Inuyama #FamilyTravel #OnsenExperience #UrakuenGarden #JapanItinerary #TripMoments #GratitudeTravel #OffTheBeatenPath

On our second morning, we had breakfast at the restaurant in Hotel Indigo Inuyama Urakuen. The moment we walked in, we could feel a distinctly inviting vibe. Through the large floor-to-ceiling windows, we were greeted by a serene lake surrounded by lush greenery, with the magnificent Inuyama Castle keep clearly visible in the distance. The weather was nice that day; despite a few clouds, the sun occasionally peeked through. The open and airy scenery made our breakfast feel even more relaxing and leisurely. We ordered one Japanese set and one Western set. The Japanese set was exquisitely presented: hot soup in a red lacquered covered bowl, accompanied by steamed fish, tamagoyaki, and white rice, paired with tofu, greens, pickles, and other small side dishes. While the portions for each item were modest, the plating was incredibly thoughtful. The flavors were light yet beautifully layered, making it perfect for the morning. The Western set was heartier and more substantial. The thick, golden pancakes with a perfectly toasted surface stole the show. We drizzled a rich creamy egg sauce over them, making them piping hot and incredibly appetizing. It came with bacon, sausages, hash browns, and a fresh salad, alongside a crispy croissant and an additional salad plate featuring smoked salmon, chickpeas, and nuts. Both the presentation and taste were incredibly satisfying. In addition to the main sets, there was a buffet area offering fresh salad greens, an assortment of baked breads, fruits, and yogurt. You could freely help yourself, which made it super convenient to grab some extra lettuce, fruit, or an extra pastry. The restaurant was quite busy, with the bar area almost completely full. Everyone was chatting and enjoying their meals, creating a lively atmosphere. Sitting by the window, dining with a view of the lake and Inuyama Castle, we felt exceptionally relaxed. Overall, the breakfast at Hotel Indigo Inuyama Urakuen offers great variety. The Japanese set is refined, while the Western set is hearty and satisfying. Combined with the stunning window views and the supplementary buffet, it was the perfect, comforting start to the day. If I ever visit Inuyama again, I would definitely want to have breakfast here once more. This trip to Inuyama City can be described as a must-stay, deeply healing journey near the Nagoya area. Upon arrival, we headed straight to Hotel Indigo Inuyama Urakuen Garden by IHG. The biggest selling point of this hotel is that you can sit back all day and enjoy stunning, close-up views of Inuyama Castle. Coupled with the Zen-inspired Japanese design and professional, attentive service, every day felt incredibly chill. The greatest feature of Hotel Indigo Inuyama Urakuen Garden by IHG is not only its convenient location but also its exceptionally beautiful environment. It takes less than a 10-minute walk from Inuyama-Yuen Station. Even without luggage, taking a slow stroll along the specially designed tree-lined path is so refreshing with the crisp air. After checking in, we found that the lobby's floor-to-ceiling windows offer a deeply healing view of Inuyama Castle—it looks amazing both in the morning sunlight and when illuminated at night, making it perfect for photos. As for the room facilities, we were very pleasantly surprised. The room was spacious, clean, and full of design flair. The bathroom, which I always look forward to the most, features a dry and wet separated layout with a fantastic deep soaking tub, and the shower setup is very thoughtful, making it incredibly relaxing. You can sit on the large balcony with a cup of tea to enjoy the beautiful morning or evening views. The hotel's meticulous attention to detail is evident everywhere, right down to the exquisite refrigerator, tableware, and tea sets. When it comes to service, I definitely have to give it a thumbs up. From check-in, the staff were full of smiles, extremely polite, and communicated flawlessly in English. Whether guests have special requests or ask about festival activities, they proactively assist, and their email replies are incredibly fast and flexible. What was especially memorable was asking the staff about nearby festivals; they explained everything in detail and even suggested walking routes and activities, which added wonderful surprises to our trip. The dining standard is absolutely praiseworthy. For breakfast, guests can choose a Japanese set meal featuring top-tier Japanese black cod—it was truly unforgettable. We had dinner at the hotel's dining room at night, and the quality was just as high. The ingredients were fresh and exquisitely prepared, excelling in color, aroma, and taste, so there was absolutely no need to dine out. The hotel's amenities also include a hot spring where you can soak while overlooking the river and Inuyama Castle. Furthermore, the hotel itself boasts a strong sense of space and great decor; whether it's the wooden equipment in the gym or the photo spots in the outdoor garden, it's worth taking your time to explore. Itinerary tips: Remember that attractions like Urakuen Garden, Inuyama Castle Town, and nearby shrines are all just a 10-minute walk from the hotel. The attractions are concentrated and easy to navigate. If you have time, there's an amusement park next door where you can experience a traditional Japanese garden landscape and a tea ceremony. One thing to note: nearby shops and restaurants close quite early. If you want to buy souvenirs or late-night snacks, it's recommended to plan ahead or buy them in Nagoya beforehand. Booking tips: Hotel Indigo Inuyama Urakuen Garden by IHG is very popular, so early booking is recommended for peak holidays. They offer free parking and luggage storage, making it convenient for road trips. Note that during the autumn foliage season or festivals when there are larger crowds, the hotel sometimes hosts special events, so you can ask the staff in advance. Also, pay attention to local transportation schedules; if you don't have a car, it's best to research taxi routes, as the hotel does not provide a shuttle bus service. This trip truly offered a slow-living experience where modern and traditional elements intertwine. Whether you want to relax your mind and body at photo spots, or capture scenic travel shots, you'll be pleasantly surprised. Inuyama City itself is highly recommended for a 2-day-1-night or an in-depth 3-day-2-night short getaway.

September 2024 Nagoya Trip Day 3 We took the JR train from Nagoya Station to Inuyama Station~ Rolling our luggage from Inuyama Station to the hotel, we could already feel the tranquil and natural vibe of Inuyama City along the way. As we slowly approached the hotel grounds, we were gradually enveloped by lush greenery—towering bamboo groves, ancient trees, manicured shrubs, and classic Japanese stone lanterns came together to form a living scroll of a Japanese garden. Hotel Indigo Inuyama Urakuen Garden is nestled in a spot of profound Zen and natural beauty; the hotel's exterior itself is a sprawling Japanese garden. A winding stone path with a black-and-white checkered pattern stretches out, bordered by verdant grass and carefully curated rock gardens, creating a wonderful sense of depth and ceremony. Dense bamboo groves intertwine with tall pines and maple trees. Sunlight filters through the canopy, casting dappled shadows on the ground in a deeply therapeutic display. The sky, clouds, and trees strike a stunning contrast. Under the blue sky and white clouds, the vibrant greenery makes you feel as if you've "stepped into a painting." Nearby, there's a lovely riverside view. The calm water mirrors the bridge and buildings on the opposite bank, while overhanging branches add a touch of poetic charm to the scene. The hotel's entrance and its surroundings perfectly blend modern minimalism with traditional Japanese architectural elements. The seamless pairing of wood and stone instantly puts you at ease the moment you arrive. Add: Kitakoken-103-1 Inuyama, Aichi 484-0082 Japan

If you are staying at the gorgeous Hotel Indigo Inuyama Urakuen Garden, you are in the perfect spot. The castle is literally a stone’s throw away. From the hotel, there is a peaceful, winding pathway that leads you directly past quiet local residential houses and straight into the historic atmosphere of Inuyama Jokamachi (Inuyama Castle Town). 🍢 Feasting Our Way to the Castle The historic Honmachi street is an absolute paradise for "tabe-aruki" (eating while strolling). Make sure to keep an eye out for these incredible local spots: Salt-Grilled Sweetfish (Ayu): Head over to Kisogawa Shoten (木曽川商店). They slow-roast fresh river sweetfish over open charcoal coals. It is incredibly crispy on the outside, perfectly salted, and packed with delicate, savory flavor. Hida Beef Skewers: You can't miss Inuyama Gyutaro (犬山牛太郎) or the food stalls at Mori no Marche. They serve melt-in-your-mouth Gifu Hida Wagyu beef grilled on skewers right in front of you—juicy, savory, and perfectly charred. Fresh Tomato Souvenir Shop: On your walk, you'll spot small local farm-to-table souvenir stands selling incredibly sweet, farm-fresh candy tomatoes. They are perfect as a refreshing palate cleanser between hot snacks! The Specialty Nut Shop: Drop by Mamemichi (豆吉本舗 - Inuyama Branch), a beautiful traditional shop specializing in flavored nuts. Their roasted almonds, matcha-coated beans, and savory garlic-chili peanuts make the absolute best souvenirs to pack home. ⚔️ Raiding the Keep (Genshin Impact Style!) Climbing up Inuyama Castle genuinely feels like stepping into Tenshukaku—the Raiden Shogun’s grand estate from Genshin Impact. Inside, you are immediately greeted by magnificent, authentic Shogun-style samurai armor displays that look incredibly imposing. The castle is one of the oldest original wooden keeps left in Japan, which means you are walking on centuries-old creaking timber. ⚠️ A quick warning: The wooden stairs inside the castle are extremely steep (almost vertical ladders!). You have to hold onto the handrails tightly. If you don't exercise regularly, your legs will definitely feel the burn—but do not give up! Seeing elderly local travelers determinedly making their way to the top is incredibly inspiring. Every single floor has narrow wooden windows you can peek through, each offering a distinct, framing view of the surrounding forests and river. But nothing compares to the highest floor. You step outside onto a narrow wraparound wooden balcony (mawari-en) with incredibly low railings. The 360-degree bird's-eye view of the winding Kiso River is absolutely breathtaking! My mum is terrified of heights, so she decided to sit this one out and wait for me in the courtyard below. The coolest part? It's so open that she was actually able to spot me waving like a tiny dot from the very peak of the castle! 🏛️ Preservation & Organization What makes Inuyama Castle so special is how flawlessly they have preserved it. It is old, raw, and authentic, yet meticulously maintained. Friendly workers are stationed on every floor to guide the crowd, keeping the flow of traffic on those incredibly steep stairs safe and orderly. It is beautiful to see a historic structure being so respectfully managed for future generations to experience. ℹ️ Visitor Guide (Tickets & Hours) Opening Hours: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Last admission is at 4:30 PM). Closed Dec 29–31. Entrance Tickets: ¥1,000 for adults, ¥200 for elementary & junior high students. Pro-Tip: If you are traveling from Nagoya, grab the Inuyama Castle Town Ticket combo via Meitetsu Railway—it bundles your train fare, castle entry, and discount coupons for food stalls on the main street! 🛁 The Perfect Ending After tackling those stairs, my legs were officially jelly. But there is no better reward than walking the quick path back to Hotel Indigo and immediately sinking into their gorgeous, hot onsen (natural hot springs). Soaking away the muscle soreness while reflecting on a beautiful day of history and street food was the absolute perfect way to wrap up our Inuyama adventure!

Got a tight schedule in Nagoya but still want to explore the outskirts? I highly recommend Inuyama, where you can soak in the warm, tranquil vibe unique to a small town! Focusing your itinerary on Inuyama Castle and the Castle Town makes for an incredibly fulfilling half-day adventure! ⭐️ Key Highlights for Your Inuyama Trip! 1- Inuyama Castle Town: Often called a miniature version of Kyoto's Gion district, this area is a real residential neighborhood. This means it lacks any artificial touristy feel, allowing you to experience an authentic and rustic local atmosphere. Plus, it's packed with fun things to see and eat—from Hida beef sushi and dango to cute little souvenir shops! 2- Inuyama Castle Keep (Tenshukaku): This was the most memorable part of my trip. If you visit Inuyama, climbing the castle keep is an absolute must. The stairs are quite steep, making it a bit of a workout, but the panoramic view from the top is absolutely stunning. Stepping into Showa Yokocho truly feels like a trip back to the Showa era! 🤩 The alleys are lined with retro kissatens (Japanese-style cafes), izakayas, and snack stalls. With faded signboards and nostalgic decor, you'll easily feel like you've time-traveled straight back to the 1960s. 👍🏻 You absolutely have to try their deep-fried beef croquettes—crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and pure bliss in every bite! If you get tired from walking, pop into an old-school cafe for afternoon tea and soak in the vintage vibes 🧋. The street itself isn't huge, but the Showa atmosphere is so authentic, making it a fantastic spot for photos! The historic Inuyama Castle is also nearby, so you can combine ancient ruins with nostalgic street views for an exciting itinerary. Highly recommended for anyone who loves vintage street photography and tasty street food 👟📸. Address: 60-60 Nishikoken, Inuyama, Aichi 484-0085, Japan (Castle town area east of Inuyama Castle) Opening Hours: Open all year round, 24/7 (Going early is recommended as popular spots may have lines) Getting There: Take the Meitetsu Inuyama Line Express train from Nagoya Station to Inuyama Station (approx. 25 minutes). From the station, it's about a 15-minute walk, or you can catch the Inuyama Community Bus and get off at the "Inuyama-jo-mae" stop. Be sure to bookmark this spot for amazing photos, delicious eats, and a stroll through a nostalgic Showa-era town! 🍢🛤️

Who understands! Picking the right accommodation when traveling to Nagoya with kids is really important. Our 5 days and 4 nights trip was not tiring at all. The kids got to burn off energy every day, and they fell asleep as soon as they hit the bed at night. This is what a vacation feels like for a tired mom. You must book Ghibli Park in advance. We booked the afternoon session, which was much less crowded. The Catbus, Totoro Bus, and Kiki’s Delivery Service bakery were so authentic that the kids didn’t want to leave once inside. Nagoya City Science Museum was a pleasant surprise. It has the world’s largest planetarium dome, and lying down to watch the stars was so soothing. The extreme cold lab lets you experience minus 30 degrees Celsius. The kids wore three layers but still shivered and stomped their feet. Afterward, they said they never want to go to the North Pole again. The Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology was also very interesting. You can try operating a loom and there’s a children’s driving simulation area. The kids drove little cars crashing everywhere and played for an hour without wanting to leave. We visited the SCMaglev and Railway Park twice because the first time wasn’t enough. The Shinkansen driving experience was incredibly realistic, and there were many train models to see. You must buy the limited edition railway bento box—it’s super cute, and the kids even ate an extra bowl of rice. Inuyama Castle is also recommended. Climbing up offers a great view of the Kiso River, and the old street’s gohei mochi (rice cake) is delicious—sweet and chewy. When traveling with kids, be sure to bring a stroller. Although Nagoya’s roads are very flat, kids still get tired after walking for a long time. We suggest visiting 2-3 attractions per day, not packing the schedule too full. Return to the hotel for a rest at noon, then head out again in the afternoon. We usually leave at 9 AM, return to the hotel at 1 PM for a nap, and go out again at 4 PM to avoid the hottest time of day so the kids don’t get too tired. · -- Accommodation 🏨 Nagoya Nishiki Nikko Hotel High glass curtain walls + Japanese garden, 18th-floor executive level offers views of Nagoya TV Tower, deluxe twin rooms perfect for families 🏨 Nagoya Marriott Associa Hotel International brand, spacious rooms, free stay for children aged 0-11 without extra bed, offers connecting rooms 🏨 GOLD STAY Nagoya Osu Apartment-style accommodation with zoo-themed rooms, small kitchen and washing machine, ideal for long-stay families 🏨 Courtyard by Marriott Nagoya Convenient location, spacious rooms, family-friendly, rich buffet options, suitable for families · --

During my trip to Nagoya, I visited Inuyama Castle (also known as Hakutei Castle, the oldest existing castle tower), one of Japan's five great castles. After visiting, I felt it was well worth the price! First, I highly recommend buying the Inuyama Castle Town Combo Ticket (1,630 yen), which includes train tickets, Inuyama Castle admission, and merchant vouchers all in one package! Take the Meitetsu Inuyama Line (from Nagoya Station towards Shin-Unuma) to Inuyama Station. The waiting platform is Meitetsu Nagoya Station Platform 1, marked with a green box. The journey takes about 30 minutes. After exiting Inuyama Station, walk straight for about 800 meters in front of the station. On your right, you'll see a retro-style street – that's Inuyama Castle Town! The shops on both sides have a strong Edo-era feel. There are also many snacks and desserts along the way. >< You need to take off your shoes before entering Inuyama Castle. Staff will provide a plastic bag for your shoes; please keep them with you. Upon entering, the first set of stairs left me speechless... The incline is incredibly steep! Please walk carefully, one step at a time! As expected of one of Japan's five great castles, the interior showcases original architecture and traditional Japanese woodwork. The second through fourth sets of stairs are equally steep, so please be careful and consider your physical condition. At the top, you can enjoy a stunning panoramic view of Inuyama City! Leaving Inuyama Castle, you can visit the nearby Haritsugi Shrine, and then walk back to Inuyama Station along the street. Remember to use your return ticket from the previously purchased pass to get back to Nagoya! Welcome to follow me on Instagram and check out more posts! #InuyamaCastle #Inuyama

Visiting Inuyama Castle from Nagoya is incredibly easy. After arriving by train, I followed my map to the entrance. Since I visited during the off-season, there were hardly any tourists, which really allowed me to enjoy the experience. I highly recommend heading inside for a tour. I know what you might be thinking—castles are everywhere in Japan, and you might be feeling a bit of "castle fatigue," assuming they all look the same. It's like visiting Europe; after a while, every cathedral starts to look the same. But since you're already here, it’s well worth the visit! Inuyama Castle oozes traditional Japanese charm. Wearing a kimono for a photo shoot here is such a treat (I took a set of photos myself—the scenery is stunning without the crowds). I recommend visiting in mid-to-late May. You'll avoid the crowds, and the weather hasn't reached that peak summer heat yet. Transportation: Take the train from Nagoya to Inuyama Station. It’s a 15-20 minute walk from there. It’s very easy to find, so don’t worry—it’s a perfect spot for solo travelers too!

The Museum Meiji-mura is a quintessential destination near Nagoya and stands as Japan’s largest open-air museum of historical architecture. Stepping into the park feels like a journey back in time to the Meiji era. Located in Inuyama City, Aichi Prefecture, it is easily accessible via the Meitetsu line and a connecting bus. Admission Prices Adults: 2,500 yen | High School Students: 1,500 yen | Elementary/Junior High: 700 yen | Free for preschoolers and those born in the Meiji era. Operating Hours (Current standard 9:30 AM – 5:00 PM) April–July, September, & October: 9:30 AM – 5:00 PM August: 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM | November: 9:30 AM – 4:00 PM December–February: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM The most unique feature of this museum is that it consists of original Meiji-era buildings relocated and reconstructed from across Japan. It houses about 60 historical structures, many of which are designated Important Cultural Properties. These are not replicas; they are genuine historical buildings. Must-see churches & Western-style buildings, European-style government offices, and old banks symbolize the Westernization of the Meiji period. A major highlight is the Main Entrance Hall of the old Imperial Hotel, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Its intricate geometric decorations make it one of the park’s most iconic landmarks. You can also ride authentic steam locomotives and vintage streetcars, offering a hands-on experience rather than just a sightseeing tour. From schools to post offices, the park perfectly recreates daily life during the Meiji era. Because of its authenticity, it has served as a filming location for many famous productions like *Rurouni Kenshin* and *Jin*. Visitors can rent kimonos or Meiji-style outfits for photos, enjoy retro Western-style dishes (such as curry and omurice), and even collect a limited-edition Meiji-mura postmark. The park is massive, spanning about 1 million square meters, so we recommend planning for a half-day to a full-day visit.

Museum Meiji Mura is an open-air museum located in Inuyama City, Aichi Prefecture, dedicated to relocating and preserving historical buildings primarily from the Meiji era. Spanning a vast area of approximately 1 million square meters, the park features over 60 historical structures, including 12 designated Important Cultural Properties. It is beloved as a "living village" where visitors can truly experience the atmosphere of a bygone era. If you love architecture, this is a must-visit destination! Historical Buildings: You can admire stunning examples of Japanese-Western eclectic architecture, such as St. Francis Xavier's Cathedral (relocated from Kawaramachi, Kyoto) and the main entrance hall of the Imperial Hotel. Operating Exhibits: Visitors can actually take a ride on a steam locomotive (SL) or a Kyoto city streetcar that was in service during the Meiji era. Access via Public Transportation From Nagoya Station (Direct Bus): Catch the bus bound for "Meiji Mura" at Stop 23 on the 4th floor of the Meitetsu Bus Center (approx. 75 minutes). This is highly recommended for those who want a smooth, transfer-free trip. From Inuyama Station (Train + Bus): Take the Meitetsu Inuyama Line and get off at Inuyama Station. From the East Exit, hop on the Gifu Bus (Meiji Mura Line) at Stop 2 (approx. 20 minutes).

The most memorable moment of my Nagoya trip was definitely my time in Inuyama! Purchasing the Inuyama Pass at the Nagoya Station Information Center made the trip so convenient! The staff kindly explained each ticket and were very helpful if you had any questions. After arriving at Inuyama Station, I walked to the castle while exploring the castle town. The walk wasn’t too far, and I enjoyed buying snacks along the way, which made the experience even better! The area was so peaceful, and there weren’t too many tourists, which made it even more enjoyable! With the Inuyama Pass, you also receive an admission ticket to Inuyama Castle, so make sure to bring it with you when you head up. The stairs inside the castle were steeper than expected, so it was a bit challenging! But once you reach the top, the view is absolutely stunning, so keep going and enjoy the reward. If you have time, I highly recommend visiting Inuyama! 📍Note: When purchasing the Inuyama Pass, only cash is accepted—no cards!
