🇨🇴 Sanctuary of Las Lajas – Ipiales, Colombia
The Sanctuary of Las Lajas, formally the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Las Lajas, is a neo-gothic Catholic basilica set within the canyon of the Guáitara River in Ipiales. The shrine is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary as Our Lady of the Rosary.
According to local tradition, the colorful image of the Madonna and Child on the rock wall appeared miraculously, without human intervention. The current church was constructed between 1916 and 1949, spanning the canyon on a striking bridge, blending architectural elegance with the dramatic natural setting. The name “Laja” refers to the flagstone-like rocks that line the canyon.
Pope Pius XII granted a Pontifical Decree of coronation to the image on 31 May 1951 and elevated the site to a Minor Basilica in 1954. Pope Paul VI later recognized the Virgin of the Holy Rosary as the Patroness of Ipiales in 1965.
Today, the Sanctuary of Las Lajas is a major pilgrimage destination, drawing visitors from Colombia and Ecuador, who come to venerate the miraculous image and experience the breathtaking scenery. The combination of devotional significance, dramatic canyon setting, and neo-gothic architecture makes it one of South America’s most remarkable churches.
