With the crowds receding in August and September, these 6 destinations offer less tourist traps, beautiful scenery, and no disappointments.
Everyone says that once summer vacation is over, popular tourist spots should take a breather. But some places, however, only truly awaken their beauty once the crowds have thinned out. While others are queuing for two hours for popular photo spots, you can enjoy the breeze of an entire valley all to yourself. These 6 places are on my personal reverse travel list—less crowded, beautiful scenery, and reasonably priced—perfect for visiting in August and September.
1️⃣ Ya'an|Sichuan
Summer at Bifengxia Gorge is dominated by pandas and waterfalls. Entering the gorge at 8 am, the mist hasn't dissipated yet, the stone steps are damp, and the air is filled with the scent of bamboo leaves and earth. Walking down the boardwalk, you hear the roar of the waterfall plunging into the deep pool, and the spray on your face gives you a shiver. Halfway up the Qingyun Ladder, don't rush to take the elevator up; there's a side path leading to the panda base. At 9:30 am, you'll catch the pandas eating bamboo—the round, plump pandas munching on bamboo stalks with a satisfying crunch—you could watch for half an hour without getting bored. At noon, after leaving the canyon, we went to a farmhouse restaurant at the foot of the mountain and ordered a pot of Ya fish soup. The fish was so tender that it fell apart with the touch of chopsticks, and the broth, made with spring water, was incredibly delicious.
⚠️ A reminder: There are many slippery steps in the canyon, so those with elderly people or children should walk slowly and wear non-slip shoes.
🚄 It takes about 30 minutes by taxi from Ya'an city. Remember to book your tickets online a day in advance; buying them on-site is significantly more expensive.
2️⃣ Dongying|Shandong
The wind at the mouth of the Yellow River carries a salty, fishy, and expansive feel. After 4 pm, we went to the Yellow River Estuary Ecological Tourism Area. The light was perfect—not too hot or too stuffy. We took the park's electric shuttle bus northwards, with endless reed beds on both sides. When the wind blew, the reed flowers rippled like waves. We got off near the Yuanwang Tower and walked along the wooden boardwalk to the confluence of the Yellow River and the Bohai Sea. We could see the water, half muddy yellow and half azure blue, with a clear boundary, as if nature had drawn a dividing line. Don't rush off now; wait for the sunset. The setting sun paints the entire water surface golden red, and the oil rigs in the distance bob up and down, creating a scene of indescribable tranquility.
⚠️ The scenic area is large. The last electric shuttle bus departs at 5:30 PM, so don't miss it.
🍜 In the evening, return to the city and find a small restaurant near Wanda Plaza in Xicheng. Order a plate of Lijin pan-fried buns—crispy on the bottom, juicy inside—paired with a bowl of hot porridge, it's incredibly comforting. This area is best visited by car; it's about a 40-minute drive from Dongying city center, with stunning oilfield scenery along the way.
3️⃣ Jiaxing|Zhejiang
I advise you not to be greedy and visit Wuzhen and Xitang one day at a time, taking your time. The nighttime experience in Wuzhen Xizha is the highlight. Enter the scenic area after 5:30 PM; most tourists have left, lanterns light up one by one, casting a warm yellow glow on the water. Rowboats creak by, their oars scattering the lights across the river. Find a riverside teahouse, order a pot of Hangzhou white chrysanthemum tea, and watch the shadows flicker in the windows across the river—it's like watching a silent film. The next day, head to Xitang. Arrive before 10 AM; the morning coolness still lingers under the covered walkways. Walk along the covered corridors; no need for a map, every alleyway holds a surprise.
🍜 Have lunch outside the scenic area, don't settle for anything inside. Walk five minutes to "Qiantang Renjia" in town, order a plate of whitebait and a dish of shepherd's purse—a refreshing and light meal.
⚠️ Wuzhen Xizha entrance fee is 150 yuan, Xitang is 95 yuan. If you only have one day, Wuzhen Xizha is more worthwhile.
🚄 There are direct buses from Jiaxing South Station to Wuzhen, taking about an hour. Don't take unlicensed taxis.
4️⃣ Zhongwei|Ningxia
Autumn comes early to Zhongwei. By the end of August, it's already chilly in the mornings and evenings, so a light jacket is necessary. During the day, visit Shapotou, exploring the Yellow River area and the desert area separately. Start with the Yellow River area, taking a sheepskin raft for a while. The old boatman hums folk songs as the raft bobs with the current, the spray splashing onto your feet, cool and refreshing. After disembarking, take the desert ladder to the top of the sand dune. A breathtaking panorama unfolds before you—the golden dunes of the Tengger Desert stretch to the horizon, their lines as soft as silk. Don't rush to sandboard yet. Walk deeper into the dunes for twenty minutes; the sounds of people will fade away, leaving only the rustling of the wind and a trail of footprints behind you. Looking back, the view is both solitary and magnificent. In the afternoon, we visited Gaomiao Bao'an Temple, an ancient architectural complex hidden in the city. Its foundations are higher than the city walls, and the halls are layered upon each other, with exquisite wood and brick carvings that are truly breathtaking.
⚠️ The Shapotou entrance ticket includes both the Yellow River area and the desert area, but camel riding and dune buggy rides in the desert area require separate payment; please consider your physical capabilities before participating.
🍜 In the evening, we had a bowl of wormwood noodles in the city. The noodles were chewy and smooth, served with a side of stir-fried eggs with sand onions—a unique wild flavor you can't find elsewhere. This area is suitable for young people; families with children should be cautious about visiting the desert area, as the sandstorm can be strong and children may get sand in their eyes.
5️⃣ Yangjiang|Guangdong
Hailing Island is the kind of place you won't want to leave once you've arrived. At 6:30 in the morning, the beach at Dajiaowan was still relatively empty. As the tide receded, the wet sand was revealed, with small crabs crawling sideways, leaving a trail of tiny footprints. Walking barefoot on the soft sand and feeling the cool seawater wash over your feet was incredibly refreshing. The midday sun is intense, so don't try to brave it on the beach. Go back to your guesthouse, shower, and take a nap. Head out again around 4 PM, rent an electric scooter, and ride along the coastline from Dajiaowan to Shili Yintan, enjoying the sea breeze the whole way. There's a rocky beach near Mawei Island where you can find small sea snails and hermit crabs at low tide – kids will be thrilled!
🍜 For dinner, go to the seafood market in Zhaipo Town and pick out your own seafood: flower crabs, mantis shrimp, and sea urchins. After buying them, find a nearby food stall to cook them; the cooking fee is 15-20 yuan per dish, half the price of ordering at a restaurant.
⚠️ Dajiaowan entrance fee is 40 yuan, but it's free after 6 PM. If you don't want to pay, you can enter right on time.
🚄 A taxi from Yangjiang High-Speed Railway Station to Hailing Island takes about 40 minutes; sharing a ride is more cost-effective.
6️⃣ Longyan|Fujian
The Tulou (earthen buildings) of Longyan are the kind of architecture you have to see to believe it. The most breathtaking Tulou (earthen building) is Chengqi Lou, the "King of Tulou" in Yongding. This four-story circular earthen building houses hundreds of people. Clothes hang to dry in the courtyard, children run and play on the veranda, and chickens and ducks peck at the ground in the corners—a vibrant, everyday scene. Arrive before 8:00 AM, before the tourists arrive, and the sunlight slants into the building, casting beautiful patterns of light and shadow on the earthen walls. After visiting the Tulou, head to Changting Ancient City in the afternoon. This small town, hidden in the mountains of western Fujian, is much quieter than Fenghuang. Walking along the ancient city wall, the Tingjiang River flows gently by, and women wash clothes on the banks, the sound of their washing mallets echoing. Reaching Diantou Street, turn into an old shop and order a bowl of braised pork kidneys. The broth is clear, the pork kidneys are tender and crisp, and it comes with a plate of lantern-shaped cakes, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
⚠️ Tulou scenic areas are scattered; Yongding and Nanjing each have their own attractions. If time is limited, the King of Tulou in Yongding is sufficient. Guanzhai Mountain is best suited for those with good stamina; the climb takes about two hours, but the scenery at the summit is well worth the price.
🍜 Don't miss the local snacks in Longyan city: taro buns, beef balls, and glutinous rice cakes—all hearty and delicious. This area is perfect for those who appreciate culture; the pace is slow, and you could easily spend two or three days here without getting bored.
7️⃣ Huangnan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture|Qinghai
Kanbula is the kind of place you can't help but want to visit once you see its name on a map. In late August and early September, the mountains here begin to change color: the red of the Danxia landforms, the green of the forests, and the blue of the Yellow River blend together like a spilled palette. Enter the scenic area at 9 am, take a sightseeing bus along the winding mountain road to the viewing platform. The wind is so strong you have to hold your hat down, but the expansive view makes you want to shout. Looking down, the Yellow River makes a sharp bend here; the water is a clear, turquoise green, flowing quietly—a stark contrast to the murky downstream. Walking along the mountainside boardwalk offers a close-up view of the Danxia landforms. The red rock walls, eroded by the wind, display layers of texture, resembling an open giant book.
⚠️ The scenic area is over 2,000 meters above sea level. Climbing the boardwalk might be a bit breathless; walk slowly and don't rush.
🚄 It takes about 2.5 hours to drive from Xining. The road conditions are good, but the mountain roads are winding, so those prone to motion sickness should prepare medication beforehand. This place is perfect for those who love natural scenery; it's less crowded, quiet, and you can hear the wind and birdsong—a truly relaxing place.
8️⃣ Chizhou|Anhui
Autumn at Jiuhua Mountain begins with a morning mist. At 6:30 am, just as the mountain gate opens, the mist still clings to the mountainside, the stone steps are damp, and the pine trees on both sides are covered in dew. Your trouser legs will be damp after just a few steps. Climbing the mountain at this time means the entire temple is yours. From the platform in front of the Hundred-Year Palace, you can see the sea of clouds surging below, with distant peaks appearing and disappearing like an ink painting. After burning incense, don't rush down the mountain. Take a stroll down Jiuhua Street. This street isn't long, but it's filled with old shops selling vegetarian cakes, bamboo crafts, and Buddhist beads. The owners are all leisurely and don't hawk their wares; they only answer your questions.
🍜 At noon, find a vegetarian restaurant and order a vegetarian duck and a plate of dried bamboo shoots. Light yet flavorful, paired with a bowl of white porridge, it will warm you right up.
⚠️ Jiuhua Mountain entrance fee is 160 yuan, cable car fee is separate. If you only have one day, it's recommended to take the cable car up the mountain and walk down, saving energy and allowing you to enjoy the scenery. This is a good place for prayer and tranquility. Come with worries, and you'll feel half-lighter on your way down.
🚄 There are direct buses from Chizhou High-Speed Railway Station to Jiuhua Mountain, taking about an hour. Don't trust touts on the street.
These six places don't have the crowds of popular Instagrammable spots, but each has its own unique character. Ya'an is cool, Dongying is vast, Jiaxing is mild, Zhongwei is boundless, Yangjiang is leisurely, Longyan is historically significant, Huangnan is magnificent, and Chizhou is serene. In August and September, pick one that catches your eye, buy a ticket, and go. The days with fewer crowds and beautiful scenery are fleeting.
