First time visiting Xi’an? Don’t mix up the order
One of the most common mistakes for first-time visitors to Xi’an is mixing up the city center, Qujiang, Lintong, and Huashan in the itinerary. Although the attractions seem close, traveling between these areas takes a lot of time.
This route follows the order of “Xi’an city center – Qujiang – Lintong – Huashan – Xianyang – Qinling,” allowing you to explore the history of the ancient capital of 13 dynasties, enjoy night views, try local snacks, and hike famous mountains. With enough time, you can spend 6 days; if you have only 3–4 days, you can pick highlights from this plan.

🔴 Xi’an 6 days 5 nights itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Xi’an, explore the ancient city center first
Xi’an Xianyang International Airport → hotel → bell tower → drum tower → Xi’an city wall → Muslim quarter
Don’t pack the first day too full. After arrival, it’s best to stay near the bell tower, Yongning Gate, or Xiaozhai for convenient subway access.
In the afternoon, visit the bell tower and drum tower to experience the ancient city’s central axis, then climb the city wall from Yongning Gate. If time allows, rent a bike to ride a section. The city wall lighting at dusk creates a great atmosphere.
In the evening, head to the Muslim quarter and Sajinqiao area for snacks. Try roujiamo, beef and lamb paomo, zenggao, and sour plum juice, but sample small portions to avoid overeating on the first meal.

Day 2: Qujiang Tang culture day tour
Shaanxi History Museum → Big Wild Goose Pagoda → Tang Paradise → Tang Dynasty Night Market
It’s recommended to book tickets for the Shaanxi History Museum in advance. The collection ranges from Shang and Zhou dynasty bronzes to Han and Tang artifacts. If you’re not familiar with history, review some background information or opt for a guided tour.
After the museum, head to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, where dining and rest options are convenient. In the afternoon, explore Tang Paradise, which is quite large, so you don’t need to cover every corner.
Save the evening for Tang Dynasty Night Market. The atmosphere changes completely from day to night, with Tang-style architecture, street performances, and visitors in Hanfu creating a unique vibe.

Day 3: Lintong history route
Huaqing Palace → Lishan Mountain → Museum of the Terracotta Army → “The Song of Everlasting Sorrow”
Lintong is a bit far from Xi’an city center, so it’s best to dedicate a full day.
In the morning, visit Huaqing Palace, where gardens, hot spring ruins, and Tang dynasty stories are concentrated. If you have the energy, hike Lishan Mountain; if not, explore the foot of the mountain.
In the afternoon, visit the Museum of the Terracotta Army, commonly known as the Terracotta Warriors. This is not just a photo spot; plan about 3 hours to visit Pit 1, Pit 3, and Pit 2 in order.
In the evening, watch the live performance of “The Song of Everlasting Sorrow.” The show depends on weather and season, so check the schedule after finalizing your plans.

Day 4: Challenge Huashan
Xi’an North Station → Huashan North Station → visitor center → West Peak cable car → Golden Lock Pass → North Peak cable car descent
For first-time visitors to Huashan who want to avoid exhaustion, the “up from the west, down from the north” route is recommended. Take the West Peak cable car up, pass West Peak, South Peak, East Peak, and Central Peak, then descend by the North Peak cable car to see many classic views.
Huashan has many steps and some steep sections, so wear non-slip sports shoes. Even in summer, bring a light jacket as the temperature and wind on the mountain are noticeably different from the city.
It’s not recommended to combine Huashan and the Terracotta Army in one day, as both require physical effort. Splitting them will provide a better experience.
· --
Day 5: Xianyang and Guanzhong culture
Yuanjia Village → Han Jingdi Yangling Museum → Xianyang city center
Yuanjia Village is great for food and shopping. The old street offers Guanzhong snacks like oil-splashed noodles, cold noodles, guokui, and saozi noodles. Although commercialized, it still retains a lively local atmosphere.
In the afternoon, visit the Han Jingdi Yangling Museum. Compared to the Terracotta Army, the accompanying figurines here are smaller, the exhibition space is quieter, and the underground ruins display is distinctive.
If you’re interested in Tang dynasty imperial tombs, you can adjust this day to visit Qianling Tomb and Famen Temple, but these sites are farther apart and better suited for self-driving or private car hire.

Day 6: Leisurely tour of Qinling
Cuihua Mountain → Nanwutai → Shijingli → Kunming Pool
If you don’t want to visit museums on the last day, head south of Xi’an to enjoy nature.
If you like mountains and cool retreats, choose Cuihua Mountain; if you prefer temples, hiking, and Qinling scenery, go to Nanwutai. There’s no need to visit both in one day—pick one and take your time.
On the way back to the city in the afternoon, stop by Shijingli for a stroll, then walk around Kunming Pool at sunset to end your Xi’an trip at a relaxed pace.

🏨 accommodation suggestions
For first-time visitors, prioritize staying near the bell tower, Yongning Gate, Xiaozhai, or Big Wild Goose Pagoda.
The bell tower area is good for exploring the old city and trying snacks; Yongning Gate is convenient for climbing the city wall and has a great night atmosphere; Xiaozhai offers easy transportation and is close to the Shaanxi History Museum; the Big Wild Goose Pagoda area is ideal for visiting Tang Dynasty Night Market in the evening.
You can make day trips to Huashan and Lintong. If you plan to watch the Huashan sunrise or want to avoid rushing, consider staying near Huashan the night before.

✅ travel tips
Xi’an’s popular attractions are crowded during holidays. Book tickets for the Shaanxi History Museum, Terracotta Army, and other sites in advance when possible.
Summer days are hot, and there is little shade around the city wall, Terracotta Army, and Big Wild Goose Pagoda, so avoid the midday sun.
Don’t schedule too many museums in one day to prevent information overload. Use the subway for city attractions; for Huashan and Xianyang, prioritize high-speed rail or self-driving to save time.
Ticket prices, opening hours, and showtimes may change. Check official information on the day of your visit.
