2026 Jomda Travel Guide: must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transport & travel experiences (updated in August)

Just returned from a trip around Chamdo in mid-July. I originally came for the "secret eastern Tibet," but found the grasslands here glowing green in July. The herders in Bangda and Ziga are moving to summer pastures. If you're lucky, you might catch local horse races around Jiangda and Leiwuqi, which are much livelier than I expected 🌿 ⚠️ Travel tips July is actually the rainy season in Chamdo. The meteorological station just issued a blue alert for heavy rain. Afternoon thunderstorms, strong winds, and short bursts of heavy rain are common in the directions of Zuogong, Mangkang, and Basu. The Nujiang Gorge section of G318 is prone to falling rocks. Sisters driving themselves should closely monitor road condition updates from "Chamdo traffic police." Bangda Airport sits at 4,334 meters above sea level. Avoid running or jumping. Don’t wash your hair or take a shower for the first couple of days. Book a hotel with oxygen supply in advance on Trip.com. Oxygen tanks in the city cost about 20–30 yuan each. If you get a headache, taking ibuprofen is better than toughing it out. Bring fleece and a windbreaker. Daytime temperatures in the city reach 25–29°C, but at Ranwu and Laigu, nights drop to 6–9°C. The temperature difference can be discouraging. Sunscreen and sunglasses are essential. The high-altitude UV rays can change your skin in just half an hour 🌞 Regular attractions (Ranwu, Zizhu Monastery, Yanjing) don’t require a border pass. If you want to visit Chayu, get the permit in your registered residence ahead of time. For less popular spots like Zizhu Monastery and the Three-Color Lake, it’s best to rent an off-road vehicle. "Tibetan Easy Travel" offers official tour vehicles. Don’t risk cheap rides from unlicensed drivers. 🏔️ Recommended attractions I visited Qiangbalin Monastery the afternoon I arrived. It’s free and right on the edge of Chamdo town. The prayer path overlooks the confluence of the Zhaqu and Angqu rivers. The sunset light makes for amazing photos. Plan a full day for Ranwu Lake and Laigu Glacier. Laigu tickets cost about 100 yuan. Horseback riding to the glacier tongue is 100 yuan per person. The blue ice in July isn’t as pure as in winter, but wildflowers bloom by the lake, creating stunning reflections. Walking a section of the lakeside boardwalk at upper Ranwu is enough; no need to force yourself to finish it. Zizhu Monastery is in Dingqing at 4,800 meters. It’s a Bon religion temple hanging on a cliff. Admission is free, but the roads are winding. Take motion sickness medicine if needed. The Butuo Sister Lakes in Dingqing host a local horse race in July, offering a lively tent city atmosphere. If you’re driving G318, stop at the Nujiang 72 Bends viewing platform. Watch the sunset over the Jinsha River in Yanjing in the evening. You can also visit the ancient salt fields nearby 🌄 🏨 Accommodation tips In Chamdo city, I stayed near Chama Square. Hotels like Ruiting Holiday, City Convenience (Chama Square branch), and Borui Mandan all have ratings above 4.2. Oxygen rooms cost just over 300 yuan per night. Compare prices on Trip.com with and without breakfast before booking. The location is close to Qiangbalin Monastery and the Lancang River. It’s also convenient to stroll to Chama Square for a late-night snack. In Ranwu town, book a lakeside guesthouse. July availability is decent, but prices rise on weekends. After enjoying stone pot chicken, you can relax in your room with a lake view—worth it. On the G318 route through Basu and Zuogong, Maya oxygen hotel and Shangkewyou (Zuogong Zhuran New District branch) offer oxygen and humidifiers, perfect for resting during long drives. The GreenTree Inn in Zuogong has a deluxe king room with an oxygen machine and massage chair for under 500 yuan, offering great value. If you’re visiting Zizhu Monastery in Dingqing, stay in the county town rather than at the mountain base. The lower altitude makes sleeping much easier. Nujiangyuan Hotel has reliable hot water, which is rare in northern Tibet. 🍜 Food recommendations Tibetan hot pot is a must. The copper pot is filled with yak meat, beef tongue, and Tibetan pork, plus some seasonal vegetables. Two people can eat their fill for just over 200 yuan. There are many restaurants around Chama Square; any one you pick won’t disappoint. Mangkang Yanjing’s Jiajia noodles are an intangible cultural heritage. Small bowls come one after another, and the owner keeps refilling. After finishing, they count bowls with stones. You can get full for just over 20 yuan. The meat sauce is made from Tibetan pork bones and is very flavorful. Don’t buy dried yak meat at tourist spots. In Dingqing county town, behind the Lao Sichuan supermarket, there’s a local stall selling hind leg meat for 80 yuan per jin. Dip it in chili powder to taste the creamy flavor. Butter tea and tsampa are standard breakfast items. The savory taste might take getting used to, but they really help with altitude sickness. In Leiwuqi town, try the butter tea with a little saffron at Amala Tibetan restaurant. It costs 10 yuan per set with barley cakes and is worth trying. Summer-only treats include ginseng fruit yogurt. If you see it, don’t miss out. It’s sweet and sour, richer than mainland yogurt. Around Gongjue, Awang’s whole roasted lamb must be booked in advance. The stone-cooked "Aduoji" is even wilder—lamb tripe stuffed with lamb meat and slow-cooked with hot stones, an old herding area recipe 🥢 Chamdo isn’t a place for rushing through just to check off sights. Slow down, wait for the cheers at a grassland horse race, or watch the sunset by Ranwu Lake. These moments will stay with you longer than you expect.

Traveling slowly along G317, the secret land of eastern Tibet, Chamdo, unfolds before you—where the Jinsha, Lancang, and Nu rivers run side by side, carving out the plateau’s profound canyons. This journey is more than a road trip; it’s a spiritual pilgrimage on wheels. 🚩Why Chamdo? Chamdo is the “eastern gateway” of Tibet, spanning G317 and G318. Since ancient times, it has been the vital passage for Sichuan, Yunnan, and Qinghai into Tibet and the first stop on the ancient Tea Horse Road entering Tibet. Along this culturally rich route, you’ll connect snow-capped mountains, sacred lakes, ancient temples, and faith. [Four stops in Chamdo, a journey through mountains and rivers] First stop: Jiangda | red secrets and the first stop entering Tibet Crossing the Jinsha River, Jiangda is the “eastern gateway” to Tibet along G317. Gangto, known as the “first village liberated in Tibet,” stands quietly by the riverbank. The cliff bears a giant carving of the word “Tibet.” Red Flag Square and the river crossing site tell stories of a turbulent past. Along the way, explore the snow-capped mountain corridors of Xueba Valley or discover the woodcarving craftsmanship at Boluo Ancient Marsh. Spend the night at a Tibetan guesthouse in Gangto, falling asleep to the sound of the river. 💡 Tip: The Tibet entry checkpoint can be busy. Prepare your ID and wait patiently. Second stop: Karuo | millennia of echoes and city life Karuo means “castle” in Tibetan and is known as the “gateway to eastern Tibet.” Don’t miss the largest Gelugpa monastery in eastern Tibet, Qiangbalin Monastery. Watch the red walls and golden roofs glow in the morning light. Walk clockwise along the monastery walls while listening to the passionate debates echoing through the halls. About 12 km south of the city, the Karuo ruins take you back over 4,000 years to the Neolithic era. The unearthed red and black painted double pottery jars are treasures of the Tibet Museum. If time allows, drive to Gama Tibetan Art Valley to visit the hometown of intangible cultural heritage artisans. 💡 Tip: The altitude here is moderate, making it an excellent place to service your vehicle and restock supplies. Third stop: Leiwuqi | plateau forests and colorful temples Heading north from Karuo, Leiwuqi spreads across forested valleys and is known as the “forest sea of eastern Tibet” and “little Switzerland of Tibet.” The Chajema Hall stands amid blue skies and green fields, with layers of red, white, and black stripes resembling a giant thangka standing for a thousand years. Don’t miss the deep forests and natural hot springs of Yiri Gorge. Leiwuqi’s yak meat is rich and flavorful—a pot of yak hotpot is perfect to soothe the road weariness. 💡 Tip: This stretch has many sharp turns and narrow roads but stunning scenery. Use your horn frequently when turning. The hot springs in Yiri Gorge are worth a soak. Fourth stop: Dingqing | the red symphony on the backbone of eastern Tibet Dingqing is the highest city on this journey. The spiritual highland is Mount Zizhu at 4,800 m—“Zizhu” means six peaks, with towering, steep rock formations. On clear days, the golden roofs of mountain buildings shine brightly, like a palace fallen from the heavens. At the summit, the endless snow-capped mountains stretch to the horizon. The wind may blow away the dust behind you, but it can’t erase the mountains and rivers you’ve passed. G317 is more than a road; it’s the backbone of Tibet’s source. Gangtuo Village by the Jinsha River is known as the first village liberated in Tibet. The most beautiful encounters on a journey are never the grand sights we intentionally seek out, but the vast night skies and dazzling galaxies we stumble upon through a telescope in the dead of night. When the hustle and bustle of the trip finally subsides and everything returns to tranquility, washing away the restlessness and rush of the day, only then can we truly experience nature's most majestic and gentle scenery. Far from the city's light pollution, the night sky is breathtakingly pure and clear. Peering into the cosmos through a telescope in moments like these lets us transcend the limits of the naked eye and witness the boundless elegance hidden deep within the night. As you slowly adjust the focus, distant constellations snap into crystal-clear view, dim stars begin to blaze brilliantly, and the profound dark canopy reveals infinite layers. Every tiny detail holds the universe's unique romance and mystery. Getting lost in the night sky through that lens completely unwinds the weary traveler's mind and body. All emotional struggles, pointless overthinking, and everyday worries gently melt away into the vast sea of stars. This extraordinary travel experience pulls us out of our little bubbles, allowing us to see the grand scheme of the universe. It teaches us to be still, to embrace, and to let go. We set off from Changdu city, heading east along G317 towards Dege, covering about 320 km and driving for around 7 hours. The traffic is sparse along the way, with no crowded commercialized viewing platforms. The mountains and rivers stretch wide and free, everywhere showing the untouched gentle nature of Tibet (see pictures). When we reached Shiquanhe Town, the capital of Ngari Prefecture and the westernmost point of this Tibet self-driving trip, we began our return journey along National Highway G317. The starting point of G317 is Chengdu, Sichuan, and it ends at Shiquanhe Town in Ngari, Tibet. Our return trip to Shanghai from Ngari is a journey from the end of G317 back towards its starting point. Compared to the well-known "must-drive G318," National Highway G317 has its own unique charm. Driving along G317 feels more relaxed: even when crossing high-altitude passes close to 5,000 meters, there is no strong sense of steep climbing pressure. Because the entire region has an average altitude above 4,000 meters, the terrain base is high, making altitude changes feel quite gentle. Driving from Ngari towards western Sichuan, you can clearly feel two distinct layers of change along the way: 1. Natural Scenery: The route gradually transitions from the barren, sparse grasslands of the Ngari Qiangtang Wilderness to the lush Hengduan mountain valleys. The scenery outside the window changes slowly, and you can visually perceive the landscape transformation. Traveling on National Highway G317 (the northern Sichuan-Tibet line), you will also encounter one plateau lake after another. If asked which lake is the most beautiful, everyone’s answer might be different. Because Tibetan scenery has no fixed form, with the seasons changing and mornings and evenings shifting, the same mountains and waters have completely different appearances, making it hard to fully describe the myriad views in words. 2. Cultural Scenery: Along the route are various ancient temples, historical sites, and many significant red landmarks, such as the revolutionary Jiangda and Gangtuo, the first Tibetan liberation village. 🏔️ Scenic Route Highlights (Driving from Changdu to Dege) 1. Eluo River Valley Section: Leaving the city, you first pass through a gentle river valley, with a tributary of the Lancang River extending alongside the road, and shallow green alpine meadows spreading on both banks. Early autumn colors on the mountains are soft and layered, with cattle and sheep scattered on the slopes. 2. Crossing Three Mountain Passes: Passing in order Zonglaya Mountain (4,481m), Xuejila Mountain (4,240m), and Aila Mountain (4,245m). Now the Aila Mountain Tunnel is fully open, so there is no need to detour over the dangerous old pass; the entire route is paved with asphalt, and ordinary cars can pass without difficulty. Simple viewing platforms at the passes allow short stops to gaze at the continuous Hengduan mountain range. 3. Along the Gangtuo Jinsha River: Entering the border between Sichuan and Tibet, the Jinsha River water appears muddy yellow, with steep canyon cliffs on both sides. This is the site of Tibet’s first liberation village, where magnificent canyon scenery blends with red cultural history, opening up a broad view. 💡 Experience Road Conditions: The entire route is paved with asphalt, with no large areas of bad roads or heavy rockfall sections; mountain curves are frequent, so slow down when turning. Keep distance from large trucks, and when road conditions allow, it is recommended to quickly overtake them. Altitude: The altitude ranges from 3,200 to 4,480 meters, with gentle ascents and descents; avoid intense running at high altitudes, take it easy, and slowly enjoy the beautiful scenery. The mountains and rivers are silent but can communicate with your soul. The sun and stars move, but the mountains and rivers remain. Supplies: Jiangda County is the only comprehensive supply point on the route, where you can refuel, dine, and replenish hot water; before and after the county, there are only scattered village shops. I only purchased necessary items (drinking water, food, and fuel) in the county where I stayed, ate lunch with food carried along (bread + eight-treasure porridge, etc.), and generally did not buy goods on the road. 📝 Reflections Many people travel to Dege just to check in at the Dege Printing House and Que'er Mountain, but I prefer this journey on the road. G317 is not just a road to the destination but an immersive experience of Tibetan everyday life. Unnamed yellow towers by the roadside, flowing clouds in the valleys, fluttering prayer flags in the mountains—these unknown, niche sights are far more unforgettable than popular tourist spots. Even after returning home, flipping through the photos taken then, everything reappears vividly in my mind~ The mountain does not see me, I go to see the mountain. The best scenery is always on the road.

Jiangda County, meaning "Jepu Valley Entrance" in Tibetan, is located at the junction of Sichuan and Tibet, and is the first stop on National Highway 317 entering Tibet. It was the first county liberated from Tibet, where the Hengduan Mountains and valleys blend seamlessly with the Kham culture. Its pristine scenery and rich revolutionary history coexist, making it a must-see hidden gem for self-driving tours in northern Tibet. Below, we'll guide you through its attractions, accommodations, and cuisine. · Gangtuo Folk Village (First Village Liberated in Tibet/4A): Free. Located on the banks of the Jinsha River, the first village on National Highway 317 leading into Tibet features traditional Tibetan-style buildings and includes the site and memorial hall of the 18th Army's crossing of the river, rich in revolutionary history. · Boluojirong Grand Canyon (2A): Entrance fee 40 yuan. Located 25 kilometers from the county seat, the canyon features sheer cliffs on both sides, narrowing to only 2.3 meters at its narrowest point. A winding river flows through the canyon, and numerous relics related to the Gesar epic are found. · Guopu Baizong Sacred Mountain: Free. Located 5 kilometers from the county seat, this is the site of Guru Rinpoche's meditation. The pilgrimage around the mountain takes about 3 hours, and the route includes natural and cultural attractions such as meditation caves and tiger caves. · Wala Monastery: Free. Built in 1253, it is the largest monastery in Jiangda County, one of the main monasteries of the Kagyu school, and a branch of Larung Gar Buddhist Academy. It features layered red-walled monks' quarters and precious murals. · Xueba Valley Scenic Area: Free. Located within Gangtuo Town, it stretches 13.5 kilometers at an altitude of 3700 meters. It is densely forested with streams, and its autumn foliage is stunning. 🏨Accommodation Recommendations · Budget: County town express hotels/hostels 140-240 yuan/night, convenient transportation. · Mid-range: Gangtuo village guesthouses/snow mountain view inns 280-400 yuan/night, experience Tibetan culture. · High-end: Jiangda Huisheng Hotel/Kangba Hotel 480-750 yuan/night, well-equipped facilities. 🍛Food Culture · Jiangda Yak Meat Hot Pot: Slow-cooked yak meat from the highlands, tender and flavorful, with a rich and delicious broth. 75 RMB per person, warming and helps combat altitude sickness. · Tibetan Earthen Hot Pot: Yak meat, Tibetan pork, and wild mushrooms, with plenty of vegetables. 80 RMB per person, warming and comforting. · Clear Yak Bone Broth: Simmered in a wooden barrel at an old teahouse near Gangtuo Bridge. 15 RMB per bowl, deeply warming. · Butter Tea + Tsampa: A typical Tibetan meal.
