I just returned from Daocheng Yading, and I really don't recommend going in July-August because it's just too...
My friend said, "Going to Daocheng Yading? Climbing a mountain almost killed me." 😅 I nearly canceled my flight. But I wasn't reconciled, so I dug through a week's worth of guides and discovered a secret—we've been visiting Daocheng Yading all wrong. 🤯✨
I decisively abandoned the blind rush for long routes and oxygen-depleting climbs, and instead, I stumbled into the 15℃ mountain breeze ❄️, the wild-flower-filled Luorong Pasture 🌼, the milky-blue, crystal-clear Milk Lake 💎, and the deserted golden roof of Chonggu Monastery in the early morning 🛕. It was truly amazing! 😭❤️
📋🛂 Essential preparations before departure
· Altitude sickness prevention: Take Rhodiola 1–2 weeks in advance; absolutely do not go up the mountain with a cold; upon arrival, "walk slowly, eat less, drink more water."
· Ticket benefits: All national tourists get free admission from August 1 to October 31, 2026! Current high school and college graduates get permanent free admission ⚠️ Real-name reservation + self-purchase of travel insurance required.
· Must-have list: Hard-shell jacket + light down jacket (temperature difference 20℃+), waterproof hiking shoes, thermos, oxygen tank (CNY 20/bottle in the county, CNY 60 in the scenic area), sunscreen + sunglasses.
· Cash: Some small eateries only accept cash, so it's recommended to prepare CNY 500–800.
🚗✈️ How to get there
· ✈️ Plane (fastest): Direct flight from Chengdu Shuangliu/Tianfu to Daocheng Yading Airport (elevation 4,411 meters, the highest in the world!). Direct flights from Shuangliu Airport resume on July 10, with three flights daily from Chengdu ⚠️ Direct flights carry a high risk of altitude sickness, so it's recommended to adapt in Chengdu for 1–2 days first.
· 🚗 Self-drive/chartered car (most scenic): Chengdu → Kangding → Xinduqiao → Litang → Daocheng (2 days, 800 km). The scenery along the way is divine, and the altitude gradually increases.
· 🚌 Bus (most economical): Chengdu Xinnanmen → Daocheng (approx. 16h, CNY 280). Fewer services, suitable for budget travelers.
🏔️🌿 Must-see summer highlights (15℃ natural air conditioning)
In Daocheng Yading during July-August, the rainy season has just passed, so the grass is at its greenest, flowers are in full bloom, and the water levels are highest. Daytime temperatures are 15–20℃, and nighttime temperatures are 5–8℃.
🌼 Luorong Pasture—a sea of flowers beneath the sacred mountains (starting point for hiking)
From late July to mid-August, the entire meadow is covered with small yellow, purple, and white wildflowers, with Mount Yangmaiyong directly in front.
Don't rush; sit down and enjoy the mountains, flowers, and clouds. Yaks graze leisurely by the Gongga River. Every photo you take looks like a National Geographic cover 📸.
💎 Milk Lake—"a tear from the blue planet"
It takes about 4 hours to hike there.
The last section, the "despair slope," requires a rest every 10 steps. But the moment you see Milk Lake—milky blue with emerald green, like milk poured into turquoise. Snow-capped mountains reflect on the lake, and prayer flags flutter in the wind. It's worth it.
🛕 Chonggu Monastery—golden temple roof framed by snow-capped mountains (easy short route)
The golden roof of this Tibetan Buddhist monastery sparkles in the sun, with Mount Xiannairi as its backdrop.
It's best to go in the early morning when the morning light hits the golden roof, accompanied by wisps of incense smoke.
There are also fearless blue sheep 🦌 nearby.
🏔️ Three sacred mountains in one frame: Xiannairi (Avalokiteshvara), Yangmaiyong (Manjushri), and Xianuoduoji (Vajrapani), perpetually covered in snow.
🗓️📅 4-day, 3-night tested itinerary (no overexertion, no rushing)

· Day 2️⃣: Scenic area → Zha Guan Beng → Chonggu Monastery 🛕 → Pearl Lake (short route, 3–5h easy walk) → Photograph the reflection of Mount Xiannairi 📸 → Return to town to rest.
· Day 3️⃣: Long route challenge day 💪 → Arrive at Luorong Pasture before 7:00 AM (to get a horse! CNY 300/one way, saves 3 km of energy) → Hike to Milk Lake 💎 → Five-Color Lake 🌈 → 10 km round trip, elevation 4,200–4,700m → ⚠️ The wind picks up and the weather changes after 3:00 PM, so be sure to descend before then.

🍜😋 Must-try food
· Yak hot pot: A signature must-try! The soup is milky white, warming both body and stomach with one sip. CNY 80–150 per person in Shangri-La Town, "Xueyu Zangcan" is recommended.
· Butter tea: A magical remedy for altitude sickness! CNY 10–20/bowl, drink small amounts frequently.
· Matsutake (July-August exclusive!): Fresh matsutake grilled with a pinch of salt, the aroma fills the entire room. Matsutake stewed chicken is about CNY 80–150.
· Tibetan yogurt: Fermented yak milk, served with honey, CNY 15–20/bowl.
· Tsampa + highland barley cake: CNY 15–30/serving, perfect with butter tea.
🏠🛏️ How to choose accommodation (the wrong choice can ruin your trip)
· ✅ Shangri-La Town (elevation 2,900m): First choice! Full facilities, low altitude, altitude-friendly, 10 minutes from the scenic area. Oxygen rooms are CNY 300–800/night.
· ⚠️ Yading Village (elevation 3,900m): Beautiful scenery but high risk of altitude sickness, beginners should be cautious. Staying here saves 1.5–2 hours of travel time, but don't push yourself if your body can't handle it.
· 💡 Choose a hotel with oxygen! 24-hour diffused oxygen + humidifier, a lifesaver.
💰💸 Budget calculated for you (4 days, 3 nights, excluding major transportation)
· Tickets: Free admission from August–October! Sightseeing bus CNY 120, a must-buy.
· Accommodation: Shangri-La Town oxygen room CNY 300–800/night × 3 ≈ CNY 900–2,400 🏠.
· Dining: CNY 80–150 per day 🍜.
· Transportation: Scenic area electric car round trip to Luorong Pasture CNY 80 + horseback riding CNY 300 (optional).
· Total: Approximately CNY 1,500–3,200 per person (flexible depending on spending).
⚠️🧐 Advice from an experienced traveler to avoid pitfalls
1️⃣ Altitude sickness is no joke! Take Rhodiola 1–2 weeks in advance, and don't shower! Don't ask why.
2️⃣ Free admission from August–October, but real-name reservation is required! Book in advance through official channels to avoid a wasted trip.
3️⃣ Buy oxygen tanks in the county! CNY 20/bottle, the scenic area sells them for CNY 60, which is pure rip-off.
4️⃣ For the long route, you must enter the scenic area before 7:00 AM! After 3:00 PM, the wind picks up and the weather changes on the mountain, which is extremely dangerous.
5️⃣ Wear waterproof hiking shoes + a hard-shell jacket! On the mountain, it can be sunny one minute and hailing the next.
6️⃣ Don't wear canvas shoes! Mud + gravel + snowmelt mixed together can make the soles fall off.
7️⃣ If you're not physically fit, don't force yourself on the long route! The short route (Pearl Lake) is just as breathtakingly beautiful.
8️⃣ Don't eat too much when you first arrive at high altitude! Meat is hard to digest and adds a burden to your digestive system.
You see, by decisively abandoning the blind rush for long routes and oxygen-depleting climbs, I stumbled into the 15℃ mountain breeze ❄️, the wild-flower-filled Luorong Pasture 🌼, and the milky-blue, crystal-clear Milk Lake 💎. The color of Milk Lake cannot be replicated by any filter 💙.
A 15℃ summer—this is the right way to experience "the last pure land on the blue planet" 😌💖.
