His vast knowledge about the wildlife and Tanzania itself was impressive. He patiently answered all of our questions, explained so much, and always prioritized our preferences. What stood out most was how he went beyond the typical tourist spots, offering us a unique and authentic Tanzanian experience. From the very start, it was memorable: Mathew greeted us at Kilimanjaro airport wearing traditional Maasai attire, giving us a warm and special welcome to our journey! The mid-range accommodations were excellent and thoughtfully chosen. Staying in the Serengeti was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Throughout the safari, we enjoyed incredible game drives, spotting the Big Five and many other animals up close. A standout moment was our day in the Ngorongoro Crater. Mathew showed us secluded areas and knew exactly where to find wildlife—thanks to him, we even spotted a rhino! We also had an amazing day exploring Tarangire National Park, admiring the countless elephants, giraffes, zebras, other animals, and the majestic baobab trees. One of the best aspects of the trip was Mathew’s flexibility in accommodating our personalized interests. We visited a Maasai village, interacted with the Hadzabe tribe, and explored a Datoga village. Learning about their unique lifestyles, traditions, and cultures enriched our experience and made it even more special and authentic. We went on a 6-day safari with Enock and were fortunate to see countless animals: several hundred elephants with their young, dozens of lionesses and their cubs, along with a few lions, including one majestic male who "posed" for us on a hill. We also spotted 2 leopards, 3 cheetahs, 1 serval, monkeys, hundreds of zebras, buffaloes, wildebeests, dozens of giraffes, dozens of hippos, 2 rhinos, countless antelopes, vultures, herons, and more. Enock was truly professional and patient, ensuring we found the best spots to observe wildlife. He was also kind and attentive, providing us with insightful information throughout the journey. At the end of the safari, we had the chance to visit local tribes, including the Hadzabe. This was a meaningful and authentic moment of sharing that deeply moved us. Our first family trip to Tanzania was unforgettable, as we aimed to experience it all—Kilimanjaro, the stunning wildlife, landscapes, Serengeti, amazing people, and delicious food. It couldn’t have been better. However, visiting the Hadzabe and Datoga tribes was the most moving part of our journey! We knew we wanted to visit the tribes with someone from there, and we’re so grateful we found Yusuph from Visit Hadzabe. Yusuph is well-organized, responsible, knowledgeable, patient, and fluent in the Hadzabe language. Knowing them since childhood, he made our experience special, and we shared so many laughs together. From the moment we saw him by chance in Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro, the kids adored him. We only later learned he also offers safari tours—next time, we’ll definitely choose him for that too! Meeting the Hadzabe felt unreal at first, but within minutes, we were sitting with people of all ages—children, teens, and adults—on the rocks, sharing their lives. Watching them hunt, make fire for birds, and seeing even the kids help provide food amazed us. For a side note, Baobab fruits are incredibly tasty! Back in their community, it felt so natural to sit on the rocks, and we were even invited to dance—it was an incredible experience! The visit to the Datoga tribe was equally fascinating. We observed how they craft arrowheads for the Hadzabe, build traditional houses that are cool and waterproof, and grind corn flour on stone mills. Their Ugali and beautiful jewelry impressed us deeply. We were so enthralled that we forgot to ask questions! Thanks to Yusuph, who made everything feel organic and genuine, we learned so much and felt like a part of the community. The kids were thrilled by the entire experience. The safari organized by Kilidove Tours was flawless, thanks to Luca, their professional representative in Italy, who enabled us to enjoy a unique and wonderful experience. We explored three extraordinary parks: Tarangire, the true kingdom of elephants; Serengeti, where we encountered four of the "Big Five" up close (lions, leopards, elephants, and buffalos), along with cheetahs, hippos, giraffes, zebras, hyenas, wildebeests, gazelles, eagles, and many other animals; and finally, Ngorongoro Crater, with sightings of the black rhino, vast herds of wildebeests, buffalos, and zebras, as well as numerous flamingos. The organization was impeccable. We stayed in excellent accommodations, particularly enjoying the tented camps within the parks, where we were warmly welcomed with friendliness and hospitality. The meals were also very satisfying, whether it was dinner at the camp or lunch during the safari, with food prepared for us to take in the Jeep. Besides the extraordinary nature, the trip offered exciting cultural encounters with the Maasai and the Hadzabe and Datoga tribes. To crown the experience, we enjoyed a stunning trek to Materuni Waterfalls at the base of Kilimanjaro, accompanied by a delightful visit to the local community, where we learned the entire coffee-making process and savored a delicious traditional lunch. Lake Duluti was a truly beautiful and peaceful experience! Surrounded by lush greenery, the lake offers stunning views of Mount Meru from the water. 🏔️ The calm atmosphere made it an ideal spot to relax, connect with nature, and admire the breathtaking scenery. We spent one night in the Eco Lodge, and it was absolutely delightful. From the warm welcome to the super spacious room and the fantastic dinner, everything was perfect. The hotel only opened six months ago, so everything is new and spotless. The garden and the view of the sunset from the terrace provided the perfect end to a day of safari in Manyara National Park. Big thumbs up! Our two daughters, aged five and eight, also felt very comfortable and enjoyed the stay.

Juma and Eduardo picked us up from Kilimanjaro, and that's where our adventure began. We spent 4 days exploring national parks (Tarangire, Ngorongoro, Serengeti) and visiting communities (Masai Mara, Toga, Hadzabe). We had an amazing trip with Serengetii Smiles. Our guides, Omary and Barnaba, were excellent, very knowledgeable, funny, and experts in animal behavior. We were lucky to see the Big Five and much more in Ngorongoro and Serengeti. All the hotels and lodges we stayed at were wonderful. Tembo House Hotel in Stone Town and TUI Blue Bahari in Zanzibar were fantastic. The Inoga Lodge in Karatu and Serengeti Classic View in the heart of the Serengeti were equally amazing. The staff everywhere were warm, friendly, and helpful. A special thank you to Fredrick for organizing two birthday celebrations. Planet Lodge in Arusha was also lovely, with very nice staff.

I would give five stars because the trip was AMAZING and our guide was delightful. However, the organization by the company Tanzania Specialist was quite weak and doesn’t deserve even four stars. Sara González arranged our trip and was very attentive up until we made the first payment. After that, it felt like we didn’t exist—emails went unanswered, and phone calls were ignored. Overall, it was a very expensive trip for such poor management. Fortunately, the safari itself was stunning. We went for our honeymoon, and our guide Amani was a wonderful discovery, both as a person and a guide. We managed to see all the animals—the big five, the big nine, and countless others. Amani took his time for us to take pictures and enjoy the scenery. His eyesight was excellent and doing the private safari was absolutely worth it as he continuously adapted to our schedule and needs. We saw animals up close, even more so than we had imagined. It was also crucial for us that he spoke Spanish. Most of the hotels were very impressive, although some were changed at the last minute, and the price unexpectedly increased by 4%. I highly recommend the Serengueti Sametu Camp by Karibu Camps & Lodges and the Lake Manyara Kilimamoja Lodge; they are absolute dreams! The decoration, rooms, food—everything was fantastic. In summary, the trip itself deserves a ten-out-of-ten rating. It was a unique and unforgettable experience.

#slowtraveling Empakaai is 40 km north of Ngorongoro Crater inside the NCA, reachable only by 4x4 with a licensed guide and ranger (NCAA permit $70+ per day, ranger $30, guide $40–60, cash or card at Lodoare gate but the ranger post at Nainokanoka takes cash only — TZS 50,000 small notes). I joined a 4-day walking circuit (Olmoti → Empakaai → descent) out of Karatu; the Empakaai rim hike alone is 5 km out-and-back from the eastern ranger post, 2 hrs, 295 m descent to the lake shore and back, rim altitude 3,200 m. The moss is on the rim forest — Hagenia abyssinica and fig roots dripping at 8 a.m., the soda lake 300 m below holding flamingo specks. The rim track circles 32 km if you commit, but most slow travelers do the eastern segment to the descent notch and back. I spent 90 minutes at the notch watching the lake change from emerald to steel-blue as the cloud lifted. No fencing, no rail — the rim grass is slick, one step wrong and you slide into forest. Boots mandatory, poles helpful. Armed ranger stays 10 m behind you the whole time; that is the rule, not a suggestion. Cash: TZS 100,000 in small notes for tips, water (TZS 5,000 a liter at the ranger post, no card), and the Karatu supermarket top-up before you enter (Karatu takes cards, Nainokanoka does not). Dry season June–October is best; March–May the rim is a bog. Mistake I saw: a couple from Arusha tried to self-drive to the rim and “walk alone” — NCA rangers turned them back at Lodoare, no refund. You cannot touch Empakaai without the paperwork. If Ngorongoro Crater is the stadium, is Empakaai the cathedral? The moss on the Hagenia told me which one I’d return to.

We met Sunday and Scott at a local carnival/street fair and spent quite some time chatting with them. We decided to trust their company for planning our dream trip to Africa, and they did not disappoint! Our 14-day itinerary included three relaxing days in Zanzibar. Our safari group consisted of just our guide, my spouse, and me, supplemented by some daily local guides. This arrangement meant no competing for views with others in the jeep, which truly enhanced our experience. From the airport, our guide greeted us, and we never had to worry about logistics during the trip. Sunday meticulously planned everything, leaving enough room for spontaneous stops. Our adventure kicked off with a hike to Materuni Waterfalls, followed by a local lunch and a hands-on session of coffee roasting, grinding, and tasting. Tarangire National Park gave us our first wildlife encounter—purely fascinating! During the journey, we had the unique opportunity to visit the Hadzabe tribe, bringing back souvenirs they had hand-carved. We then explored Serengeti National Park for several days, marveling at the abundance of animals freely thriving in their natural habitat—a truly incredible sight. Later, a visit to Lake Manyara National Park provided spectacular views of wildebeests, zebras, buffalo, and flamingos in overwhelming numbers. The Zanzibar leg of our trip included an eye-opening tour of a spice farm, a visit to prison island, and a day on Kwale Island with a delicious shore lunch featuring lobster and fish. Each lodging choice throughout the trip was incredible, but Wild Africa Camp stood out the most—it was absolutely breathtaking. We even participated in a few cooking classes at various locations. A memorable birthday celebration took place at Bougainvillea Safari Lodge, where the staff made the night especially festive after dinner. We are endlessly grateful to Great Pelican for organizing this extraordinary journey for us—it was truly amazing and unforgettable. Sunday and Scott are remarkable people, and the locals we met along the way were warm and welcoming. Choosing this company for our safari was undoubtedly the right decision!

We had an amazing time exploring Tarangire National Park, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater. Erick met us at our hotel in Arusha and introduced us to our guide, Laurian. On day one at Tarangire National Park, we marveled at the Baobab trees, numerous elephants, and even lions. That evening, we stayed at Escarpment Luxury Lodge, our favorite accommodation of the trip, with great food, comfort, and a gorgeous setting. Days two and three were spent in the Serengeti, where we enjoyed stunning views and, thanks to Laurian’s exceptional guiding skills, watched a cheetah hunt unfold. However, Ngorongoro Crater was unquestionably the highlight. It’s one of the most breathtaking places we’ve visited, brimming with wildlife. We counted over 20 lions and finally saw rhinos! Bird enthusiasts would also adore this site. Thank you, Erick, for organizing such a wonderful honeymoon experience. Your friendly demeanor and excellent service were much appreciated. Taken around by Pysion in a punt boat as a family of 4 adults. His extensive knowledge and keen eye for wildlife were impressive, making him engaging to listen to throughout the trip around the lake. We spotted kingfishers, egrets, an African Fish Eagle, kites, and monitor lizards. It was a fantastic way to spend over two hours in the afternoon after arriving in Tanzania earlier that same morning.

#cultureshock Stepping through the thorn-branch perimeter of a Datoga village places you inside a tightly knit, closed-off world where every movement, relationship, and daily chore is dictated by centuries-old taboos. Polygamy is not just practiced here; it forms the very architecture of their clustered huts, where multiple wives live in close quarters sharing a single central cooking fire. For an outsider, navigating their reserved demeanor and strict social codes can feel intimidating and disorienting. There are no casual greetings or superficial pleasantries—every interaction carries the weight of a proud warrior heritage that views the outside modern world with deep skepticism and quiet independence.

We enjoyed a three-day family safari covering Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara National Park, and the Ngorongoro Crater. Karim is an incredibly experienced guide who speaks excellent German, is funny, and kind with children. He has a great instinct for spotting animals and scenic views. We were extremely fortunate to see all of the Big 5, even without visiting the Serengeti. Karim assisted with every detail beyond the safari and organized everything flawlessly, from pick-up to drop-off. He is a warm, sincere, and utterly reliable guide. We’re planning to visit the Serengeti with him in the future. It was a truly wonderful experience that exceeded all of our expectations in beauty and excitement. We concluded this incredible trip in Zanzibar, blending culture, history, and relaxation. Our visit to Stone Town was deeply enriching, allowing us to delve into the island's fascinating history, architecture, and culture. We took a family safari with Herman, and the tour was entirely tailored to our preferences. Afterwards, we headed to Zanzibar. On a side note, all the accommodations were excellent. During the game drives, Herman went above and beyond to create the best experience for us. Once in the Serengeti, we even took a huge detour and were surprised by a lion family with their prey 😍. The three of us (my husband, our 16-year-old son, and I) went on an 8-day safari. Chris, our guide and driver, was excellent—very friendly, humorous, and knowledgeable. The trip was well-organized, and we always stayed on schedule, which suited us Swiss perfectly :-). Chris drove safely on the adventurous roads and had a great instinct for spotting animals (we saw the Big Five and many more). He surprised us with a visit to a Maasai village, which we loved, and a trip to the market in Karatu was another highlight. The experience was spectacular, especially having the luck to be guided by Mwin'juma, who was the highlight of the trip. He knew every corner of the parks—truly a perfect 10.
