For decades, Ketchikan residents shopped downtown in the city’s historic shopping district. Downtown shops today cater mainly to tourists, with dozens of jewelry stores,local craftsmen and artists, candy stores, gift stores and galleries. Start off on Mission Street and browse through many of these in a few hours, pass through Creek St. where you can enjoy many more retail offerings in an environment that hasn’t changed much from the times when the pilings were first erected here over Ketchikan Creek in the late 1800s.

Ketchikan is sometimes referred to as Alaska’s first city. It is a common port for Alaskan cruises, and there are some walking trails and entertainment near the cruise ship terminal. We walked to Creek Street, which has a lot of shops and some cafes and restaurants serving local eats (e.g. crab, salmon, reindeer jerky). A popular attraction is the Alaskan Lumberjack show. 🚢 Discovery Princess: The Basics Discovery Princess is a Royal-class ship from Princess Cruises and the sixth and final vessel in this series. Officially launched in 2022, it is a relatively new and modern large cruise ship. I sailed in September 2024 on a classic 7-day Glacier Bay itinerary, roundtrip from Seattle: Seattle → Juneau → Skagway → Glacier Bay → Ketchikan → Victoria → Seattle. I was incredibly satisfied and have become a total fan of Princess Cruises. First of all, the ship is fantastic! At the time, Discovery Princess was the largest and newest cruise ship in all of Alaska. With a crew-to-guest ratio of 1:2.5, guests receive attentive and high-quality service. The service was impeccable. Rooms are cleaned twice a day, comparable to the meticulous standards of Japanese hospitality. Whether in the main dining rooms or the buffet, the staff were warm, proactive, and always eager to help, making the experience very comfortable. The food was another major highlight, with a refined style that felt more European. The duck leg and halibut I had on the second night were the best of the trip. Unfortunately, the menu changes daily, so I couldn't order them again! The activities are plentiful, the atmosphere is relaxed, and even the fellow guests were very friendly. After a full day at sea entirely off the grid, we finally reached our first Alaskan port — Ketchikan. The entire town was enveloped in mountains, forests, and mist—it was actually incredibly beautiful. Even though we ended up completely drenched and had to rush back to the ship for shelter, it officially set the stage for our very first port memories on this Alaska cruise.
