I found a travel agency on Taobao to handle the Kinmen entry permit (processing time varies, so allow at least 2 weeks). For Taiwanese travelers, there's an indescribable sense of familiarity, yet it's completely different—a unique feeling you only understand once you've been there. · -- Day 1 | Arrive in Xiamen × Huandao Road × Zengcuo'an Land in the afternoon and drop off your luggage. Head straight to Huandao Road in the evening to catch the sea breeze. This road runs along the coastline, and you can faintly see Kinmen Island on the other side. Standing here for the first time, it's a complex feeling. Even though we're separated by the strait, it's surprisingly close. In the evening, head to Zengcuo'an for the night market. Oyster omelets, satay noodles, and peanut soup—the Minnan flavors feel incredibly familiar to Taiwanese travelers, yet there's a subtle difference I can't quite put my finger on. · -- Day 2 | Jimei School Village × Gulangyu Island Spend the morning at Jimei School Village. Built by Tan Kah Kee, it features Minnan architecture mixed with Western elements. Taiwanese travelers will find this style very familiar. It's not too crowded, making it great for photos. Take the ferry to Gulangyu Island in the afternoon. Once you step onto the island, everything quiets down. No scooters, no honking—just the sea breeze and the sound of pianos drifting from the alleys. I highly recommend staying on the island that night. Once the tourists leave, the whole island is yours. It's a completely different world from the daytime. · -- Day 3 | In-depth tour of Gulangyu Island Wake up at 6:00 AM to watch the sunrise (it's worth getting up for). The entire bay is incredibly quiet. Take your time exploring during the day—the Piano Museum, Sunlight Rock, and old villas. Find a spot by the sea, sit down, and bring a book. The focus of this day isn't the attractions; it's that feeling of being "forgotten by time." Every time I bring Taiwanese friends here, they say this is their favorite day. · -- Day 4 | Yunshuiyao × Fujian Tulou Wake up early today and head into the mountains. In the afternoon, head to the Fujian Tulou. The large, circular earthen buildings are spectacular from the outside. Once you walk inside and look up at the circular skylight, the sense of awe is something photos can't capture. You have to stand there yourself to understand why it's a World Heritage site. · -- Day 5 | Sailing trip × Nanputuo × Xiamen University The last day is packed. Start the morning with a sailing trip. Catch the breeze on Xiamen Bay and look out into the distance to see Kinmen. As a Taiwanese person, this view brings up complex emotions—it's beautiful, yet a bit poignant. At noon, visit Nanputuo Temple. The Minnan-style temple architecture is bustling with incense. Taiwanese travelers will think, "This looks just like our temples." Spend the afternoon walking around and taking photos outside Xiamen University. The Republic of China-era architecture paired with palm trees looks great in photos, especially when the evening light hits. Fly back to Taiwan in the evening, leaving with a sense of wanting more. · -- Special tips for Taiwanese travelers: ✅ Minnan dialect is generally understood, so there's zero pressure in communication. ✅ The flavors are very similar to Taiwan, so you don't need to worry about not getting used to the food. ✅ You must stay on Gulangyu Island for one night; it's crowded during the day, but the night is when you see the real Gulangyu. ✅ Tulou and Yunshuiyao are far from the city center, so I recommend joining a tour or chartering a car; taking public transport on your own is very troublesome. ✅ Overall expenses are cheaper than in Taipei, so you can be a bit more relaxed with your budget.

A while ago, before the typhoon hit, I visited Chenggong Beach every morning before work. After a morning cleanse and having fun in the water, I'd head into Chen Ching-lan Western House to escape the heat! ☕️ But today, I'm not here to share about the Western House itself (I'll write a separate post on that another day). Instead, I want to talk about the Kaoliang liquor-scented "Battle Bean" coffee sold at the cafe, which started its soft opening inside the Chen Ching-lan Western House in 2020 ☕️ If you dine in at the Western House cafe, this item is only available hot, so I usually wouldn't order it right after baking in the sun at the beach. However, despite the scorching heat, just smelling the coffee beans once made my heart flutter. This Kaoliang liquor-scented coffee truly made me fall in love successfully 🩵 ☕️ The Kaoliang liquor-scented coffee (Battle Bean) is incredibly charming in both aroma and taste. From taking in the scent of the beans and brewing to sipping the very first drop, it is absolutely intoxicating. But this intoxication doesn't come from actual alcohol content; rather, it's a natural aroma that won't make you dizzy or drunk, but simply leaves you holding your coffee mug with a satisfied smile. It tastes slightly acidic but goes down very smoothly. During the purchase, the staff carefully explained the different profiles the coffee releases at varying temperatures. Just like perfume has top, middle, and base notes, it starts with an intoxicating liquor aroma followed by fragrant floral and fruity notes. It's so romantic. This also reminds us to savor the coffee slowly after brewing. Take a sip, enjoy the breeze, let it cool a bit, and take another sip—it brings out a completely different flavor. ☕️ The second floor of Chen Ching-lan Western House also sells other coffee beans and drip bag options, but the Kaoliang liquor-scented coffee appeals to me the most 🥳 Taking advantage of the sun shower today, I brewed a cup using the B&B owner's sunset coffee mug and hid out in the traditional ancient house to write my article. There are many ways to travel. To experience deep travel, I chose to work in exchange for accommodation to save on expenses. For the past 40 days, I stayed at the bookstore where I did my work exchange. Little did I know, thanks to a typhoon, I would end up stranded in Kinmen! (It seems the universe knew how much I love Kinmen and wanted me to stay a few extra days.) And because of the transition between my work exchanges, I got the chance to stay at Yongle Ancient House B&B! 🏠 Yongle Ancient House B&B is located in Jincheng Township, super close to Jincheng Old Street and Jincheng Station. Years ago, the owner used to run a noodle shop near the City God Temple before opening this B&B. This B&B perfectly preserves the rustic charm of traditional Minnan architecture. As soon as you walk in, you're greeted by a small courtyard and a shared living room. The red lanterns, antique vases, and vintage telephones inside, along with the omnipresent signs of devout faith praying for a peaceful, prosperous household and blessed descendants, make it feel just like stepping into grandma's living room and ancestral shrine. The shared space is fully equipped with a fridge, bath amenities, a water dispenser, and a microwave. The owners are incredibly friendly and offer an on-call service, which gives you great peace of mind. 🏠 This time, I stayed in a twin room by myself. The room's decor is minimalist with a touch of vintage charm. I absolutely loved the traditional "Qie-Zhi" bag used to hold the towels and the gently swaying paper lanterns. The bathroom is an outdoor shared facility. It's incredibly spacious, well-kept, and brightly lit, so you don't have to feel scared going to the restroom in the middle of the night. You do need to bring your own toothbrush and toothpaste, but body wash, shampoo, and a washing machine are all provided. I stayed for three consecutive nights, and thanks to a bunch of discount coupons on Trip, the total cost came out to around 2,800 NTD. Overall, I'd give it five stars for both value for money and satisfaction. 🏠 It happened to be lightly raining on the day I checked in. Standing on the porch and in the courtyard, feeling the cool, damp breeze brush past me, painted a whole new picture of Kinmen's summer nights in my mind. I truly cherish all the unexpected surprises this trip has brought me, and I love the version of myself that embraces all these new experiences. Waking up bright and early for another day heading to the sea🌊 By just past eight today, I was already sitting by Chenggong Beach, munching on a scallion pancake I grabbed on the way, while soaking in the pure, natural ASMR of the crashing waves and the unfiltered azure ocean view. 🌊 Chenggong Beach isn't too far from the civilian airport, so you can often spot airplanes soaring across the sky. Whether it's the sky or the sea, both are symbols of freedom to me. Sitting here quietly and entirely alone for an hour, completely emptying my mind and thinking of absolutely nothing, felt like I had replaced all my mental and physical batteries, soaking up all the positive energy. 🌊 I really love every single beach in Kinmen. If only I could pocket them and take them with me, so I could put the ocean right in front of my eyes whenever I feel down or frustrated. It reminds me of how vast the world is, that the ebb and flow of the tide are never a given, and that with a heart as wide as the mountains and seas, I shouldn't sweat the small stuff. Just when you think you've hit a dead end, you turn a corner and stumble upon a stunning historical house. Cocoa Handmade Kitchen, the spot I visited today, is one of those delightful surprises tucked away in the winding alleyways, instantly catching your eye. 🍄 From the outside, Cocoa Handmade Kitchen is clearly a historic building. Right behind it is the Chen Shi-yin Western-style House (currently under renovation). However, stepping inside gives you an adorable contrast—lush potted plants and fairy-tale-inspired decorations fill the space. Even the menus are lovingly handmade and handwritten, creating a super cozy and cute vibe. 💕 I had brunch here today and ordered: 🥟 Crispy Skirt Pan-Fried Dumplings + Pickled Radish (110 NTD) ☕️ Iced Latte (75 NTD) 🍎 Baked Apple Bowl (Takeout) (90 NTD) The pan-fried dumplings are filled with veggies and taste quite refreshing. Since I prefer lighter flavors, I didn't even need dipping sauce. The shredded radish on the side was pickled to perfection—crispy, delicious, and an absolute must-try! The latte was standard but did the trick to wake up my groggy brain. The owner was super sweet and even brought over a tiny pitcher of milk, telling me to add more if I needed it. It's been raining a lot in Kinmen lately, and with so many plants in the store and the doors constantly opening and closing, my limbs have become a mosquito buffet. I can't swat them no matter what I do, it's so frustrating! (°ཀ°) Last week I bought a mosquito repellent sachet at Fu Yuan Tang, it smells amazing, but the shopkeeper said I qualify for free shipping and they could send it home for me, so I stupidly sent it back to Taiwan (laughable and frustrating 😂). I just took it as an opportunity to go back to this great store, so I went back to Fu Yuan Tang today and bought another mosquito repellent sachet. I'm going to sleep with it tonight!!!! ✨️ Fu Yuan Tang is located next to the square in front of the Qing Dynasty Kinmen Garrison Commander's Office. One shop sells medicine, and the other displays products. This traditional Chinese medicine pharmacy has a long history, dating back to the 15th year of the Guangxu Emperor's reign (1886). Founded to address the aches and pains suffered by local residents from years of labor and the damp, cold environment, the founder, through meticulous medical research, formulated a traditional Chinese medicine formula called "Yi Tiao Gen" (一条根), which then spread widely. (***The ancestor is here***) Today, Fu Yuan Tang has been passed down through five generations. It sells not only Yi Tiao Gen and various medicinal herbs, but also a wide variety of dried fruits, spice packets, tea bags, bath packs, and more – a truly diverse product range. The owners are very friendly, and the herbal tea is delicious. Both are only a 3-5 minute walk apart, allowing you to experience Kinmen's rich history and culture in one visit. 🏛️ The Kinmen Garrison Headquarters is the best-preserved Qing Dynasty government building in Taiwan. You can visit the ancient courtroom, dungeon, and displays of torture instruments. There's also a historic old kapok tree in the backyard. Free guided tours of Houpu Town are available in the evenings, making it the perfect starting point for understanding Kinmen's history. ⛩️ The **Chiu Liang-gong Mother's Chastity Archway (Chastity Memorial Archway)** is Kinmen's only national historic site. It was drizzling in Kinmen today, so a friend visiting from Taipei and I decided to grab some tea at a tea house near the Wujiang Academy. From the outside, Cha Hovel Tea Space looks like a minimalist, hipster teaware shop, but stepping inside reveals a breathtaking tea-tasting oasis. 🫖 We chose the tatami seats right next to the little stone path. When the staff boiled water at our table and brought over the tea menu and teaware, it truly felt like stepping into the elegant world of ancient scholars. I highly recommend everyone to check it out 💕 🌺 Here, you can find cultural and creative products brimming with local Kinmen charm. The entire shop is themed around vintage majolica tiles—some symbolize abundance, beauty, peace, and smooth sailing, while others feature Western influences, giving off a whimsical, fairy-tale vibe. I picked up some indigo-dyed postcards, matte mugs, mini tile mirrors, and a "family peace" magnet set, among other things. 🌺 It's worth mentioning that the small scissors in P6 have a special meaning. In the Minnan dialect, the word for "scissors" sounds similar to "home" or "family." We also visited Lieyu (Little Kinmen) on this trip. Compared to the main island, there’s an even deeper sense of tranquility here. Tiehan Fort, in particular, still perfectly preserves its military facilities and tunnel vibes. Walking through it, you get a vivid sense of the history of this former frontline island. Finally, I have to give a shoutout to the all-taro feast at San Ceng Lou. Kinmen is already famous for its taro, but turning it into an entire table of dishes is truly something else. It's not just the desserts—even the stir-fries and main courses incorporate taro, and they pair together surprisingly well. We booked our flight and hotel package through Trip.com and chose this Chenjia Yuanli homestay in Kinmen. It didn't disappoint—what a cozy place! We were first welcomed with tea and snacks. Breakfast featured popular local Kinmen morning dishes. The room also came with incredibly delicious plum green tea. The proprietress was so welcoming. At check-out, we were gifted souvenirs: their custom-designed coasters and pot holders, complete with a tote bag. They really put so much thought into everything.
