Yurt camps (Ak-Sai and others) run June–September, ~2,500–3,500 KZT per person half-board, cash (solar power, no card). I rode in on a local horse (800 KZT/h, guide optional) at 5:30pm in August (sunset 8:15). The south shore is open steppe — no trees, just grass and 3,500m peaks behind. Sat 200m from the yurt row; the lake went from steel to rose, the grass stayed emerald then snapped to blue, and a herd of 40 horses galloped the shoreline at 7:50, black silhouettes against the gold band. A bowl of beshbarmak from the dining yurt later. Mistake: coming in October — camps close, snow on the pass, no yurts. Another: expecting hot showers to work at dusk — solar tanks are warm at 6pm, cold by 8. Rule: ask before entering other camps' yurts (each has a family); don't ride the herd horses without the herder's yes; no campfire outside the yurt stove. Opinion: Song-Kul's steppe glow is the only sunset in this set where the horizon is also a pasture — the grass and the sky agree on the color, and the yurt is the only thing not in the conversation. #summerbeachnights Song-Kul at 3,016 m is the jailoo everyone pictures: round lake, no trees, 40 km shoreline, yurts dotting the south rim. I came from Kochkor by shared taxi to the southern ascent road (1,500 KGS split), then rode up on horseback with a CBT guide—2,500 KGS/day all-in, cash in som, no card. The "cliff view" is the drop on the east side near Tash Bulak, where the pasture ends and the granite falls 200 m to a smaller tarn. Yurt stay with full board 2,000–3,000 KGS (~23–34 USD). Bring som; the camp has no power bank rental, no card. Best light is 8:30 pm—alpine dusk, sheep bells, a horse snorting, and the lake turning cobalt. Mistake: I arrived day one straight from Bishkek (800 m) to 3,016 m—light headache, ate little. Acclimatize one night in Kochkor (1,800 m) first. Kindness note: the host woman pressed a slab of kurt (salt-dried cheese) into my hand and said "lake gives milk, cliff gives wind, you take both." Should Song-Kul cap the number of yurts per km of shore to keep the jailoo a jailoo, or does every extra yurt keep a herding family solvent?

This is Song-kul lake which is located at an altitude of above 3000 meters above sea level. What an incredible place to relax and chill for 2 nights and 3 days. How to get there: we personally rented a car and drove by ourselves to Songkul lake but there are many tour operators that will take you there from Bishkek. If you ever wonder where to see all those ancient techniques of traditional Kyrgyz craftsmanship then you definitely have to visit Shyrdak show in Kochkor. It is a popular cultural interactive program and workshop introducing local residents and tourists to the ancient art of creating traditional Kyrgyz felt carpets (shyrdaks). Kochkor (Naryn Region) is recognized as the main center of this craft, and the art of shyrdak making is included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List. These women are reunited all over the country to gather and maintain this knowledge of how to make beautiful and authentic carpets and other wool products. And if you want they will definitely teach you all the techniques which are not as simple as they look. It is a real treasure to see how it’s preserved and I strongly advise you to come and see with your own eyes! I had arranged to meet a local berkutchi(eagle hunter) to learn about the ancient tradition of falconry. He arrived on horseback, a magnificent golden eagle perched on his heavy leather gauntlet. The bird was enormous, with a wingspan that seemed to swallow the sky. He invited me to hold the eagle. My heart pounded. He handed me his thick, sheepskin-lined arm guard. "Hold steady," he instructed. As I took the weight of the bird—easily 6–7 kg—the eagle shifted, its massive talons gripping the leather with a force that was both terrifying and thrilling. The hunter noticed my arm beginning to tremble under the strain. Without a word, he stepped closer and slipped his own forearm underneath mine, providing a shared shelf of muscle and bone for the eagle to stand on. This support allowed me to relax and truly feel the connection to this apex predator. He explained that the bond between hunter and bird is built on mutual respect and physical endurance. Practicalities: To reach Song-Köl, you typically drive from Kochkor or Kyzyl-Oi during the summer months (June–September). Roads are rough; a 4x4 is essential. Stay in a local yurt camp to experience nomadic hospitality—expect basic facilities but incredible starry nights. Negotiate activity prices beforehand. There is a new place for parking cars, and a new fence is going up. Inside the mosque, it's quite normal, but it's still very interesting. I really liked the top of the Mosque with its Kyrgyz culture influences. In each part of Kyrgyzstan, it feels like the architecture of the mosques is different. Like the pictures if you enjoy them! #falladventures #travel #familytravel Son Kul Lake is considered by many to be the ‘Jewel in the Kyrgyz Crown’ for natural beauty. This is a land of nomadic shepherds tending their flocks. Today, yurt camps have multiplied around the lake, but it's only in one area and spaced out, and the people who look after these camps still often tend their flocks and cattle dot the jailoo (high mountain pastures), cared for by men on horseback. The lake’s name means ‘the last lake’ at 3,016 meters. While there, we had the opportunity for a full day to relax, taking in the beauty of the landscape, going for a variety of hikes, going horseback riding, spending time with the Kyrgyz families, and getting a taste of airan (yogurt) and kumis (a natural drink made from fermented mare’s milk). The concept was to experience a bit of the nomad life as we stay in a yurt camp - with framed doors but lots of gaps and cool air able to enter. They were heated with wood wood-burning stove and coal lumps - and piles of kerosene. There are now western-style toilets and a 'shower yurt' with proper showers and wash basins. There is hot water when the generator is running (usually ( actually one morning of the 2) morning and evening), but it is not wholly reliable. Unfortunately, being mid-September, the yurt was very cold, especially the first night when the outside temperatures were -11C. That said, a lot of blankets and a sleeping bag were supplied. It’s very cold in October, so pack plenty of thermal tops and bottoms, hats and gloves. If you plan to go horse riding there, please, please do your research!! Horses are treated badly here, not fed enough, overworked, and severely lethargic. It’s a business!! Lack of respect for the horse's welfare. Some horses go up and down and go again with no rest. Weight restrictions are not a thing that they should be. Large and tall people on a very small, thin horse, so that their hindquarters (hips) are protruding. The Kyrgyz guides herd and usher their clients on horse, pressing both the rider and the horse, preventing the horse from eating and drinking along its route, which is required and needed. A part of my 2 month Solo overland trip from Singapore up North and North West… Spent 2+week in Kyrgyzstan and this particular travel diary post was my 3 day horse ride to Son-Kul Lake… Driving to Naryn, spent a night before starting my 3 day horse riding journey to Son-Kul Lake, disconnecting from the digital world for a couple of days… a different type of detox, digital detox I would like to call it. It was such a therapeutic journey… words can’t explain any bit of how I felt, what I’ve went through (the Mother Nature, the endless flips of mountains and plains and river crossing on the horse to Son-Kul Lake). It was a little tiring and freezing cold (as you approach the higher altitude) as the Lake was an altitude was around 3000+m. It was the warmth from the welcoming and gracious home stay (Yurt) owners in the nature that warms you up from the cold. Their wide spread of breads and jams, fruits and teas are always available for you. August 2025 Kyrgyzstan Trip 🇰🇬 We left our hotel in Bishkek at 7 AM. From what looked like a bus terminal, we took the marsh to Kochkor 🚍 It took about 3 hours, with a toilet break along the way ◎ *Public toilets in Kyrgyzstan generally cost a fee. 👛300 Som From there, we headed to Lake Son-Kul in a chartered car reserved by a friend ⛺ I was told it would take 2 hours, but The driver stopped at photo spots along the way, so it ended up taking over 3 hours 🚗 Finally, including lunch, it took over 8 hours from the start to our destination, Lake Son-Kul! At an altitude of over 3,000 meters, the air was incredibly thin. On the first day, it was quite a struggle to even get to the lake visible in front of the yurt, lol. And down jackets and Heattech are essential! ⚠ My gear for the day: 🧥 Heattech, a light sweater, an ultra-light down jacket, a fleece parka, Heattech leggings, and two pairs of pants (they're warm enough to adjust in the sun). The yurt only contained a bed and a wood-burning stove. They lit the stove at night, so it wasn't particularly cold. In fact, I thought I'd get cold, so I slept in my down jacket, but I woke up in the middle of the night drenched in sweat and exhausted. 💦 I'd heard the toilets in the yurt were hole-in-the-wall, but they were actually Western-style, which was great. 🚽 There was also a shower, although no one used it. I saw some guests charging their phones in the yurts where we ate, probably because they were solar-powered. 🔌 I've traveled to over 15 countries, but the view that unfolded before me at Lake Son-Kul was the most breathtaking I've ever seen. 😇 The starry sky at night was also amazing. 🌃 The next morning, I went horseback riding for the first time in my life. 🐴 (additional fee required). By the way, there was no training beforehand, and it was a relaxed style overseas, so it was at your own risk. ⚠️ If you couldn't stop the horse, they would call out to you, "HEAD UP," but I had no idea how to slow it down. Of course, if you ended up falling behind the herd, the guide was on hand to help. Completely disconnected from the world for two days, I stayed in a yurt, living like a nomad—respecting cultures and enjoying the sounds of cows, chickens, dogs, and nature. I met random people and talked about why we were there. There were lots of laughs and 🍻, I swam in a freezing cold lake, rode a horse for the first time, and went without a shower for two days. Was it worth it? Yes. Sometimes, you just have to appreciate what you have and embrace nature.

The tranquility of Songkul Lake contrasts with the majestic mountain backdrop, showcasing the unique charm of Kyrgyzstan's pristine nature. It is only open in summer. In winter, it is not suitable to visit because of the heavy snow. Although it is summer, you still need to keep warm. Because although the sun is strong, there are gusts of cold wind. You can choose to ride a horse into the lake, which takes about 6 hours. You can contact the yurt owner to take you in! The yurts are heated by firewood at night and do not have bathrooms. The hike along the coast of song kol lake is a super cool thing to do in Kyrgyzstan! It’s a high-altitude lake surrounded by mountains. Hiking along the coast and you will see that the water is a bright blue, and the views are amazing!🥾 In the summer, you’ll see local shepherds bringing their sheep and setting up yurts, which are like cozy tents. You can stay in stay for a night and experience the nomadic homestays! There are lots of fun things to do, not just hiking, but horseback riding or even fishing! If you stay overnight after the hike, at night the stars are so bright you can see tons of them🥺. Song Kul Lake is a great place to explore the nature in Kyrgyzstan 🇰🇬

At the beginning of this month, I had a chance to accompany my parents to Kyrgyzstan. Among all of the places we've been, Song-kul is probably my favourite. The road to the lake was quite bumpy, but the view along the way was so beautiful that it didn't feel like we spent 6-7 hours on the road. As we went there at the beginning of September, the grass has already turned yellow. This creates such a nice contrast of colours between the lake and the grass. If you would like to avoid large crowds and mosquito in July and August, September is a good month to visit here.
