I really want to share this adventure. 🚲 Two days ago, my husband and I decided to rent bikes for two days—and it turned out to be one of the best decisions of our trip. 🤒 The rental cost 50 euros per bike for two days. 🚗 We covered about 50 km along the coast of the Bay of Kotor in one day, seeing it from a completely different perspective. ⛱ With a bike, you can stop almost anywhere: at a beach you love, a scenic viewpoint, or right in the middle of the road whenever you want to snap a photo of another breathtaking view. 📆 Our route started in Kotor and headed toward Risan—a charming little town that’s a pleasure to just cycle through. 📷 Next, we headed to Perast. I highly recommend visiting this place to anyone traveling to Montenegro. 🛥 The town itself is tiny—you can walk across it in about half an hour—but the atmosphere is absolutely incredible. From Perast, I suggest taking a boat to Our Lady of the Rocks (we went on a different day)—an artificial island with a church and museum of the same name. It’s a fascinating spot, especially if you’re looking for some history along with your photos. ✔️ After Perast, we continued along the coast, soaking in the views, stopping for lunch, and pulling over whenever we saw something beautiful. 🔗 Then we reached the Kamenari-Lepetane ferry, which is free for cyclists! ⛴️ Bikes cross for free, and during the summer, the ferry runs almost constantly, departing every 15–20 minutes. 💳 On the other side, we stopped at a small cafe called Bokeški Gušti, famous for its squid dishes, before completing our loop back to Kotor. The final tally: 50 km, the sea, the mountains, quaint towns, a delicious lunch, a ferry ride, and a million stunning views. We were exhausted. Because beauty like this doesn't need words. What you absolutely can't miss: 🏰 Kotor — a Venetian labyrinth where every stone breathes history. First mentioned in the 1st century AD as Ascrivium, this city has been ruled by Romans, Byzantines, Bulgarians, Serbs, Venetians (for nearly four centuries!), and Austro-Hungarians. Kotor is probably one of those cities where in 3 days you manage both to soak up the atmosphere and not to wear yourself out rushing around. It's compact, scenic, with mountains and clear sea in a single frame. I'm sharing a day-by-day itinerary, tested on myself, a trip that became a surprise for my wife's birthday. One important thing about the season right away: we were there in March. That means empty, without the cruise crowds, but the serpentine road where people drive is unfortunately still closed, it opens at the end of May. Keep that in mind when planning your trip. In other words, if you want quiet and relatively moderate prices, then March is a great choice; if you want attractions and warmth, better go in summer. So… 📍 Day 1. The Old Town We started with the Old Town, which is also where we booked our hotel. It's the heart of Kotor, a medieval labyrinth of stone streets under UNESCO protection. It's easy to get lost here, but also easy enough to find your way again, since the area is fairly small. What's worth seeing: · St. Tryphon's Cathedral, 12th century, the city's main church · Cosy squares with the churches of St. Luke and St. Nicholas · The cat park by the North Gate Kotor is a city of cats in general, they're everywhere here, there are even cat houses and a museum. Our child sat with them for about 30 minutes, feeding and stroking them, they're very tame here. In the evening we walked along the waterfront by the bay. It's super romantic, peaceful, and that very place where time stands still. 📍 Day 2. The climb to St. John's Fortress The main highlight of the trip. The climb up the Ladder of Kotor, around 1,350 steps, up to the San Giovanni fortress. Not easy, but the views are worth it: all of Kotor from a bird's-eye view, the bay laid out below you. We made it harder for ourselves and started the climb from the other side, up the serpentine. It turned out later that this is the free route, while the steps are the paid one. The climb took about an hour, we barely stopped, maybe a couple of times for water. Even our 10-year-old found it relatively easy. It's best to head up an hour or hour and a half before sunset, to enjoy an incredibly beautiful sundown. After coming back down, your legs may ache and tremble a bit if you're not in shape. So it's better to spend the rest of the day in cafes and wandering the streets of the old town. 📍 Day 3. Perast and Tivat We headed out beyond Kotor, and it was worth it. Perast is a tiny, toy-like little town on the shore of the bay: stone houses, bell towers, a single waterfront and complete calm. We got there by taxi in 15 minutes. A magical place, steeped in serenity and the total absence of any cares at all. Tivat and Porto Montenegro are also worth visiting, and that's also 20 minutes by taxi. A luxury marina with yachts, expensive boutiques and restaurants won't leave you indifferent. The contrast with medieval Kotor is striking. Be sure to stroll along the waterfront, it's fairly long and winding and lets you look at this beautiful place from different angles. 💰 A few words on money and logistics Montenegro is fairly expensive, not only for tourists but also for those who live there, take it from someone who lived there for almost a year. But travel is exactly what's meant to put experiences first and leave you ready to pay for them. · A taxi to neighbouring towns – 20 euros · A good-level hotel – 80-150 euros a night for two · Restaurants – 10-12 euros average bill per person If you want to save on food, there's a big mall with a supermarket nearby, where you can stock up on fruit, water, vegetables, snacks, and everything you consume daily that doesn't need cooking. ✨ To sum up 3 days in Kotor is the perfect amount of time for a trip: you manage to see the city, climb the mountain, make a little excursion out to the bay, and simply have a good wander too. Groceries in the stores are outrageously expensive, plus everything is in short supply and of dubious quality. You can only buy these cucumbers, these breads, these shrimp or squid. Two or three brands is a real choice. You can't go to the store and buy, for example, duck or rabbit meat; they simply aren't available, nor are quail eggs, any fish caviar, cod liver, and a million other items that seem normal these days. The food selection is extremely basic and repetitive. I don't eat chips, but apparently due to the lack of flavors, I wanted to buy a pack. Five or six varieties are spread out on a huge display, and they all either taste like salt (yes, salt) or hot pepper. Tea is only in bags; you can find it in packages here and there, but not in the supermarket. Prices are a whole other story. A 350-gram pack of frozen squid costs €12, a small loaf of bread costs €1.80, a dozen eggs costs €2.80. And it's the same for everything! Even figs, which grow everywhere and are lying around underfoot because for some reason they're not picked, cost €6-7 per kilogram in season. I'm not exactly poor, but in Montenegro, I started paying attention to prices in stores for the first time, because they don't match the value at all. 🧑🔧 Service. The locals live by the motto "Polako," which means tranquility. But to me, it smacks of laziness and a reluctance to move at all. For example, I'm in Vietnam now, and the people there are actually very calm and pleasant, and this doesn't stop them from working. If you don't have your own car, it will be very difficult, if not expensive. There's no public transportation, or rather, it sort of exists, but it doesn't follow a schedule and just sort of exists. You shouldn't count on it, especially if you're not staying for a year like we were, but just for a couple of weeks on vacation. Otherwise, you'll just waste a lot of time waiting. Taxi is the only option, but within the city, it's 5-10 euros per ride. For example, I paid almost 6 euros for 2.5 kilometers in May. If you want to travel around the cities: Budva, Kotor, Tivat, Podgorica... you need to budget 40-60 euros one way. 🍽️ Restaurants. Extremely bland, dishes often lack flavor. I'm so unfussy about food that I rarely go to restaurants where the food isn't tasty. It takes real effort. And I understand that Montenegrin cuisine is definitely not my thing. There are good places, for example, for Italian cuisine, but you have to search for them. The prices, of course, are also a bit unreasonable; even in cafeterias like Food Stories, you'll pay 25-30 euros for a modest lunch for three and a child. If it's something with restaurant-like appeal, the bill will be 35-40. Again, that's modest for the food, the decor, and the service! 🚬 Smoking. I can't say people smoke a lot, it's just that it happens in some really inappropriate places. For example, a doctor taking a chest x-ray of your lungs for suspected pneumonia hides a cigarette behind his back. A passenger on a train, not in the vestibule, but just in the aisle with the windows closed, looks your child in the eyes and exhales smoke in their direction. 💊 Dietary supplements. Life is generally very expensive, as is clear from the points above, but there's something completely out of place about this one. If you're used to prices like iHerb, multiply that by 3, no exaggeration. And you can't order, or rather, you can, but every package is subject to a hefty tax, and it's really not worth it. 🏡 Renting a home. Firstly, there are few long-term offers if you want a new, mold-free apartment. Secondly, the price is simply unjustified. For $1,000, you get about 70 meters of a solid mid-range property. If you're used to good conditions, closer to the sea, it's closer to $1,500-$1,700. If you're staying for a couple of weeks, the price is even higher relative to the number of days spent. Overall, people left a pleasant impression; you feel safe in this country, and the crime rate, especially theft, is very low. The nature is incredibly beautiful, with vibrant colors, and the sea is beautiful and clear. For example, Kotor captivated me with its splendor, and I might even want to return for another week. Behind the modest facade lies a magnificent marble altar crafted by Francesco Cabianca. · St. Nicholas Cathedral (1909): A monumental Neo-Byzantine temple featuring large dark domes, built on the site of a medieval cathedral that burned down. ⛓️ 3. Skurda River Canyon and Stone Dead-Ends. Make your way to the North Gate (1540) and climb the steps with green railings up to the fortress wall. From here, you'll get a rugged view of the Skurda River gorge, which once served as a natural defensive moat. Head over to Karampana Square. In its center sits a carved stone fountain from the 17th century. The scenery remains undeniable: bell towers, shuttered stone houses, mountain reflections trembling on the bay. But after several Adriatic towns — beautiful façades, polished alleys, familiar Venetian traces — a curious sense of repetition begins to emerge. One town blends into another; the visual memory stays, while the human texture risks fading. Perhaps this is the paradox of heavily photographed places. Montenegro 🇲🇪 The most underrated country in Europe has already been talked about enough. Originally, I just thought since I was here, I’d add Montenegro to the last three days of my Croatia trip. But the atmosphere of the bays and ancient towns here surprisingly rivals that of the South of France or Southern Italy. Montenegro, this treasure small country on the Adriatic coast, offers an experience far beyond expectations with its beauty of mountains, sea, and towns… Quick itinerary overview: Day 1️⃣ Dubrovnik → Kotor → Budva: Take a bus from Dubrovnik’s main bus station directly to Kotor (actual travel time is longer than official estimates due to traffic along the Montenegrin coast). Then take a taxi to the car rental point (there’s no ride-hailing app, so you need to message the taxi company via WhatsApp to call a taxi). Drive to Budva and check in. Day 2️⃣ Budva → Perast: In the morning, head to Sveti Stefan Island (navigate up the hill to the church). Return to Budva for lunch at Restoran Vista Vidikovac, whose terrace overlooks the entire old town of Budva. After lunch, walk from the hotel parking lot to the Ballet Dancer statue for photos. If time allows, explore Budva’s old town. Are you ready for the most delicious and hearty meat-lover's dinner in Montenegro? 😋 Then I'm calling all grill enthusiasts to Nadoveza. 🍽️ It’s a small and completely unassuming little cafe just outside of Tivat, but don’t be quick to judge it by its facade. Inside, you’ll find an authentic interior, massive portions, and incredibly mouthwatering ćevapi. The vibe feels a lot like an old biker buddy's country house: you're a bit surprised at first, then you settle in, and finally, you realize this is exactly how it's meant to be here. ✨ The menu isn't huge, but I highly recommend jumping straight to the main event—ćevapi. Ćevapi are small, grilled sausages made from minced or ground meat. It’s one of the most iconic dishes in the Balkans, usually served with flatbread, onions, ajvar, kajmak, or a simple side. The word itself stems from the Turkish kebap, and the dish has been a staple of Balkan cuisine since the days of Ottoman influence. 💖 While you wait for your main course, here's what your group should share: Appetizer Platter — 10/10. On the plate: artisanal cheeses with rich flavors and textures, homemade sausage, prosciutto, olives, fresh rustic tomatoes, and a slightly spicy spread for your bread. You'll want to devour the whole platter yourself, but pace yourself: the main course is still to come. Ćevapi — 10/10 Pictured here are three portions piled onto a single plate. We ordered this for a group of four and had no idea there would be so much food. We ended up taking the leftovers to go. The sausages come sizzling right off the grill: tender, juicy, and piping hot. You might think you can’t manage more than three, but they’re so outrageously good that it’s hard to stop. Fries and veggies are already included as a side with the ćevapi, so there's no need to order anything extra. Salad — 8/10 Just look at these portion sizes: flavorful, farm-fresh veggies buried under a mountain of soft, delicate cheese. Simple, satisfying, and undeniably Balkan. Our trip to Montenegro kicked off with a wonderful stay in the Old Town of Kotor — a place where history intertwines with picturesque landscapes. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Kotor will enchant you with its medieval architecture, cozy streets, and stunning views of the Bay of Kotor 🫶🫶🫶 the yachts and cruise ships are simply mesmerizing to look at 🤗 Don't spare any expense, this country will absolutely make you fall in love with it. BE SURE TO HIRE A LOCAL TAXI DRIVER AND ASK THEM TO DRIVE YOU AROUND THE MAIN SIGHTS (we went to Budva, Podgorica, the local Niagara waterfall, an observation deck overlooking a Blue Flag beach, etc.) the total cost from 9 AM to 8 PM was 120 euros for 4 people! We got a genuinely great local guy who showed us all these beautiful spots in just one day! Montenegro is a European country with gorgeous nature and architecture. I felt like I was in Italy.♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ What to see in Kotor;😁 Old Town Ancient walls, cobblestone streets, historic churches, and squares — every corner here breathes history. Wander through the maze of narrow alleyways, and check out the souvenir shops and cozy cafes. St. John's Fortress Hike up to the fortress's observation deck (about 1,350 steps) — and you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the city, the bay, and the mountains. It's best to go up early in the morning or at sunset: there's less heat, and amazing photos are guaranteed. Maritime Museum Learn about Kotor's maritime history: ship models, maps, navigational instruments, and artifacts tell the story of the city's glorious past as a major naval hub. St. Tryphon Cathedral Built in the 12th century, this cathedral is one of Kotor's main symbols. Inside, you'll find beautifully preserved ancient frescoes and relics. The Marina Take a stroll along the marina, where cruise ships from all over the world dock. Here, you can admire the yachts, snap some photos against the backdrop of the bay, and watch the busy port life. Cats Museum Kotor is famous for its cats — they are practically the official symbols of the city. At the Cats Museum, you can learn about their role in the city's history and, of course, meet some furry residents out on the streets. City Walls A section of the fortifications surrounding the Old Town is open to the public for walking. They offer excellent views of Kotor's rooftops and the bay. The best time to visit Kotor is spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October): it's warm but not sweltering, and there are fewer tourists. Wear comfortable shoes — the streets of the Old Town are cobblestone, and the climb up to the fortress is quite steep. There's very little shade at the top of the fortress — bring water and a hat, especially during the summer months. 🫰🫰🫰🫰🫰🫰🫰🫰🫰🫰🫰🫰🫰🫰🫰🫰🫰🫰 Buses run regularly; you can check the schedule at the station or at your hotel. There are lots of stairs and narrow passages in the Old Town — keep this in mind if you are traveling with a stroller or have limited mobility. Kotor is the kind of place you'll want to return to. The medieval atmosphere, the hospitality of the locals, the stunning views, and the proximity to Montenegro's other attractions make it the perfect starting point for exploring the country. Spend at least a couple of days here — and you'll take away not just photos, but unforgettable memories! I highly recommend combining this with a trip to Bosnia and Serbia!
