It's completely different. It feels like walking through a quiet small town in the Middle East. Granada, which flourished under the Moorish Empire until the Christian forces took over in the late 15th century, still retains its Islamic color. It also has traditional Andalusian features such as white houses, cave houses, and flamenco, making it the perfect city to rest before heading to Madrid. A place you must visit in Granada is the Alhambra Palace. This palace, which means red castle, is so beautiful that it is called the pinnacle of Islamic architecture, and it is recommended to visit all four palaces. Of these, you must not forget to visit the Nasrid Palace, which houses the Sultan's prayer room, because the view of the Albaicín from the window is truly beautiful. When you exit the Nasrid Palace, you will see the Tower of the Ladies reflected in the water in the Partal Garden, which is also a pleasure to see during your visit to the palace. After visiting the Alhambra Palace, let's go to the Albaicín. It is a fortress city located on the hill north of the palace near the Daro River, where you can experience the life of the Moors. It was built during the last Arab dynasty, and it took about 120 years to build. If you look at the picture, it looks Arabic, and the patterns are like that. This palace was later rebuilt in part in the Italian Renaissance style. It suffered great damage from an earthquake and is still being restored. If you go there, you can see traces of the earthquake. Many visitors come to Alhambra primarily for the Nasrid Palaces 🏛, but the entire complex is vast and offers many other attractions worth exploring. A full tour typically takes 3–4 hours! (We took our time, had a snack in the garden, and spent about five hours before heading down.) 🌿 Must-See 1|Generalife Summer Palace and Gardens This was the summer palace and gardens of the sultans, and I found it to be the most relaxing spot in Alhambra. The garden features long pools, fountains, and symmetrical designs, showcasing a classic Islamic garden style. Even in winter, it’s stunning, as the entire area is filled with orange trees. The vibrant oranges hanging against white walls and garden settings create a charming Southern European vibe. 🏰 Must-See 2|Alcazaba Fortress This is the oldest military fortress in Alhambra. You can climb the towers for panoramic views of Granada city. The vantage point is excellent and a popular spot for photos. If you want to capture the cityscape with red rooftops and distant mountains, this is highly recommended. 🌳 Must-See 3|Palace of Charles V This palace stands out from the Moorish architecture with its Renaissance style. The most unique feature is its circular courtyard design, which is a favorite photo spot for many visitors. Inside, there are two museums, but if you’re short on time, simply enjoying the courtyard and architecture is worthwhile. 📍 Suggested Route (No Backtracking) 🧡 Main Entrance → Nasrid Palaces → Palace of Charles V → Alcazaba Fortress → Generalife Gardens This route follows the terrain downhill towards the gardens, ending at the Generalife exit for convenience. Sacromonte Hill The hill lined with cave houses exudes Granada's unique bohemian atmosphere. Such a lovely, peaceful location and just a few km off the main autoroute en route to south of Spain. Great views and ambiance. We stayed in this hotel for 1 night en route to the south of Spain but were pleasantly surprised. Such a peaceful setting and great atmosphere. The whole stay was very relaxing after a long drive. The restaurant Los Naranjos seems to be very popular.

For this self-guided trip to southern Spain, I chose to drive through Andalusia. During my night in Granada, I specifically stayed at Hotel Guadalupe, located right next to the entrance of the Alhambra. 📍Hotel Guadalupe Address: Paseo de la Sabica, 30, 18009 Granada, Spain This hotel is practically across from the palace, just a three-minute walk to the ticket office—its location is absolutely dreamy! The hotel itself features typical Andalusian architecture, with red and white walls, wooden windows, and balconies adorned with flags from various countries. Inside, it’s simple yet cozy, with friendly staff who are very accommodating to self-driving travelers (they provide parking information). It was the most convenient and historically atmospheric accommodation of my entire trip. 🌄 Early the next morning, I walked up the hill and encountered almost no crowds, enjoying this UNESCO World Heritage Site in the soft morning light. Stepping into the Alhambra felt like entering a rift in time, where the present and the past intertwine. 💫 In the Nasrid Palaces (Palacios Nazaríes), every inch of the walls seemed like intricately carved poetry. Sunlight filtered through the lattice windows, casting dreamlike reflections on the courtyard pools. Standing atop the ancient Alcazaba tower, I gazed out over the entire city of Granada. The red-tiled roofs and white walls of the city unfolded below, with mountains in the distance—a moment of breathtaking beauty I’ll never forget. In my mind, scenes from the Korean drama "Memories of the Alhambra" surfaced, where Hyun Bin wandered through this very palace. It was surreal to realize that the settings and storylines from the drama truly exist in this city. The generalife garden is full of every coloured flower imaginable, the wisteria and tulips were my favourite. The smell of the jasmine flowers is mesmerising and worth a visit just for that alone, the Alhambra is a beautiful building sitting above Granada. One of the most beautiful cities in Andalucía 🌸

2 nights 3 days trip from Valencia to Granada 🚌 On the second day, we went to San Miguel Observatory in the Albaicin district! After walking for about 50 minutes from the center, you will come across an observation deck with a great view. The view was beautiful as we walked through a maze-like residential area, so 50 minutes was plenty. Also, the route is not precisely set, so you can climb while seeing various historical sites and observation decks along the way! Unfortunately, it was cloudy with rain falling on and off, but I guess it was better than the heat...

Granada is an enchanted city, right? However, just an hour away from Granada, there is another charming town that stores fascinating history and culture of the caves, and that is Guadix. How to get there? Bus: 45-60mins, from Granada estación de AutoBús to Guadix. Operated by BAM, 8 coaches per day, single ticket around €6. What to see? 📍 📸 Barrio de las Cuevas: the cave district, home to over 2,000 cave dwellings that are still inhabited today. 📍📸 Mirador del Cerro de la Bala: where you can see the breathtaking panoramic views of Guadix, which includes the picturesque hills, valleys, and distinctive geological formations typical of the region. 📍 Catedral de la Encarnación de Guadix: an architectural masterpiece that blends Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. Built on the site of a former mosque, this grand cathedral is a testament to the town’s rich and diverse history. Climb the bell tower for panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the Sierra Nevada mountains in the distance. 📍 Alcazaba Citadell: a Moorish fortress offering stunning views over the town and the surrounding valleys. It is temporarily closed but it is still very nice to walk around that neighborhood. Guadix is a small city where history and tradition are etched into the landscape, offering a truly unforgettable experience for those who seek to discover the lesser-known corners of Spain. #spain

#celebrateit Torre del Cubo was part of the Granada’s ancient Nasrid walls. This semicircular tower, strategically positioned along the Alhambra’s defenses, reinforced the fortress against attacks. Its sturdy design reflects Islamic engineering, while later Christian modifications integrated Renaissance elements. Here you’d be able to access the panoramic view of the Granada city. It’s right next to Nasrid Palace within Alhambra complex. Just make sure you have enough time in Alhambra then you’d not miss out on this section of it.

#celebrateit Sierra Nevada, the mountains in the southeast of Granada city, which also host the highest mountain in peninsula Spain, Mulhacén, are well-known for their snow-capped peaks. They offer a striking backdrop to the rich culture and architecture of Granada, which is nestled at their foot. It is in fact one of the first reasons that made me wanna come to Granada. After I arrived at Granada, I showed the hotel reception a picture I saw on the internet (with huge snowy mountains at the back of Alhambra complex) and asked them where the photo point might be, they told me it must be a photoshopped. But I wasn’t fully convinced. Eventually we found out the viewpoint is around Caleta station—but one needs a camera lens with around 10x power to capture it with clarity. I only had 5x, so the image quality was compromised when I had to digitally zoom in.

The bad side of it is that trips to/fro many attractions become extra tiring than it normally does; but the good part of it, which I appreciate a lot, is the good views that come along. There are many viewpoints in the city due to the geography of the place. Some of the best ones are: 1. Mirador San Nicholas 2. Torre del Cubo (inside the Alhambra compound) 3. Mirador Ojo de Granada

Whilst in Granda I had the afternoon to explore and decided to treat myself to a sweet dessert called Piononos. It’s a typical local sweet treat and it’s a great pick me up to get you through the afternoon. They are found in local cafes near Plaza Neuva square and bakeries and from the signs you cannot miss it! #sweettoothsatisfaction

#2025 Overseas Travel Event I took the train from Granada to Ronda. The Granada train station is very small. During the summer, which is the peak season, there seems to be a long line inside the small station, but in the winter, there are few people and it is quiet. It is small, so there is not much space to rest.

Built in the Mudejar style, it has three naves with a choir at the bottom. The central nave is covered with a Mudejar coffered ceiling and the side aisles are ribbed.
